RESUMO

The pinnacle of all the efforts of nutrient removal is practically put-down the moment biological cells are lysed, hydrolyzed or digested causing subsequent reappearance of assimilated nitrogen and phosphorus in any biological process. While sludge reduction requires high SRT, the enhanced phosphorus assimilative uptake demands low SRT. A novel reactor configuration for enhanced sludge and phosphorus removal was put to test by incorporating a side stream anaerobic reactor to an Anaerobic-Anoxic-Aerobic (A2O) SBR with a pre-anoxic chamber and an influent receiving inlet anaerobic reactor. The reactor was operated at the average and lowest range of prevailing carbon/phosphorus (C/P) ratio of 50 and 15 in the sewage. The phosphorus enrichment was 0.0469-0.135 mgTP/mgVSS resulting in 1.76-5.05-fold increase from cellular content by virtue of maintaining sludge recycle from SBR aeration tank to side stream anaerobic reactor from 3.78 to 9.78 (average 4.4-8.2) gVSS/gVSS present in the reactor. However, the sludge was also reduced from 3% to 51% on an average basis during the same recirculation regime. This novel configuration consists of an inlet anaerobic reactor, one pre-anoxic chamber and one intermittent oxic anoxic reaction SBR and a side stream anaerobic reactor. The first anaerobic reactor at inlet followed by pre-anoxic chamber was provided for increased ortho-p released and nitrification respectively and a side stream anaerobic reactor for sludge reduction through sludge fasting mechanism. The EBPR and lesser sludge growth were two conflicting parameters reconciled to the extent that if sludge recycled up to 6.41 gVSS/gVSS the sludge growth would be reduced by 25% and phosphorus enrichment could be attained up to 3.46 times the stoichiometric value. Any further recirculation would reduce the sludge further but at the expense of enhanced phosphorus uptake as released phosphorus from side stream anaerobic reactor also recycled back to main SBR causing looping and at more than 6.41gVSSrecycled/gVSS it nullified the enhanced effect.

A new optimized ultraviolet (UV) technique induced a photooxidation surface modification on thin-film composite (TFC) polyamide (PA) brackish water reverse osmosis (BWRO) membranes that improved membrane performance (i.e., permeability and organic fouling propensity). Commercial PA membranes were irradiated with UV-B light (285 nm), and the changes in the membrane performance were assessed through dead-end and cross-flow tests. UV-B irradiation at 12 J·cm-2 enhanced the pure water permeability by 34% in the dead-end tests without decreasing the mono- or divalent ion rejections, as compared with the pristine PA membrane, and led to less fouling by natural organic matter in the cross-flow tests. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed that UV-B irradiation opened the pore structure and created carboxylic and amine groups on the PA surface, leading to increased membrane surface charge and hydrophilicity. Thus, an optimal UV-B dose appears to modify only a thin layer of the PA membrane surface, which favorably enhances the membrane performance. UV-B did not alter the structure, flux, or salt rejection for cellulose triacetate (CTA)-based membranes. While other membrane surface modifications include oxidants, strong acids, and bases, the UV-B facile treatment is chemical-free, thus reducing chemical wastes, and easy to apply in roll-to-roll fabrication processes of PA membranes. The results also showed that a low UV irradiation dose could be applied to PA or CTA membranes for disinfection or photocatalytic oxidation.

The main objective of this study was to investigate the relationships between the use of smart technology (mobile phones) and the implicit (tacit) and explicit safety knowledge of employees and their propensity to follow safe practices at work. A survey was performed with seven constructs: (a) use of mobile technology; (b) tacit safety knowledge; (c) explicit safety knowledge of unsafe behaviors; (d) attitudes toward safety: emotional aspects; (e) safety culture: behavioral and psychological aspects of work; (f) safety culture: aspects of work; (g) safety culture: regulations at work. Workers from three manufacturing companies located in southeastern Poland completed a paper-based survey. The results revealed that using mobile technology positively influenced the explicit safety knowledge of employees, as well as their assessed safety culture, in terms of behavioral aspects and their attitudes toward safety expressed through the psychological aspects of safety culture.

Maximizing water recovery and minimizing the volume of RO concentrate (i.e., brine) produced is a growing challenge, especially for inland communities that lack ocean disposal options. In such regions, transitioning towards zero liquid discharge (ZLD) can avoid detrimental impacts associated with salt disposal via regional sewer discharge or deep-well injection. On-site ZLD energy requirements are proportional to the RO brine flowrate. Thus, system-level strategies that reduce RO brine flows will lower ZLD costs while simultaneously increasing the overall water recovery for beneficial reuse in reclamation facilities. We investigated a membrane distillation (MD) system operating using co-located, cooler source water to treat warmer wastewater RO brine. Using experimentally-quantified MD fluxes based on observed monthly water temperatures of co-located water and RO brine at a facility in central Arizona, and based on the previously reported performance of large-scale MD systems, energy consumption and operating cost were estimated to evaluate the potential capabilities of MD to treat RO brine at full scale facilities. When the RO unit was combined with MD brine treatment, net water recovery at the full-scale facility can increase from 85% to up to 91% while brine flow can be reduced by 26%. A 25% lower thermal energy was required to achieve RO net water recovery of 95% when using co-located water, compared against conventional MD without using co-located water. Overall, this work demonstrates the potential to use local thermal gradients to reduce RO brine volumes, thereby reducing ZLD costs.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge management is a central resource in achieving the goals of occupational safety efforts. OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this study was to investigate the relationships between the implicit (tacit) and explicit (formal) safety knowledge of employees and their effects on employee propensity to follow safe practices at work. METHODS: A survey with seven safety constructs: 1) tacit safety knowledge, 2) explicit safety knowledge, 3) attitudes toward safety: psychological aspects, 4) attitudes toward safety: emotional aspects, 5) safety culture: behavioral aspects, 6) safety culture: psychological aspects, and 7) propensity to follow safety regulations and safe work practices (safety at work), was designed and used for data collection. A total of 468 production workers from three manufacturing companies located in southeastern Poland provided valid responses to the self-administered survey. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the collected data. RESULTS: The results support the hypothesized relationships among tacit and explicit knowledge of safety requirements, procedures, and practices, and the propensity of employees to follow work practices at work through the mediating variables of safety culture (with behavioral and psychological factors) and attitudes toward safety (with psychological, emotional, and behavioral factors). CONCLUSIONS: While both tacit and explicit safety knowledge affect safe practices, tacit knowledge has an important influence on the use of explicit safety knowledge at work.

RESUMO

This study assessed the perceived safety culture among five petrochemical production companies in Japan. Current effects of the perceived safety culture on employee safety motivation and performance were also examined. A total of 883 workers from the five petrochemical companies, which were located in the Chugoku region of Japan, provided valid responses to the survey distributed by email. Structural equation modeling was used to evaluate the personnel safety culture in these industries. The endogenous variables considered in this study included petrochemical safety culture, personnel error behavior and personnel attitudes toward violation behaviors. Petrochemical personnel safety motivation was a mediating variable. This study's findings highlight the importance of the perceived safety culture as a significant component of the organizational culture that influences employee behaviors and safety attitudes. This study further verifies the significant impact of the perceived safety culture in this industry sector on improving petrochemical personnel safety motivation and performance. Future research should explore the differences between the subcultures that have formed under larger safety cultures within similar high-risk industries, such as construction, aviation, manufacturing and mining.
