RESUMO

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a severe demyelinating disease of the central nervous system caused by reactivation of the polyomavirus JC (JCV). Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is one of the leading causes of PML which has high morbidity and mortality due to the lack of a proven standard treatment. We found clinical and radiological improvement with the combination of high-dose methylprednisolone, mirtazapine, mefloquine, and IVIG in our patient who presented with neurological symptoms and had diagnosed concurrent acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and PML. To our knowledge, our case is the first HIV-associated PML which responded to this combination therapy.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Useless Hand Syndrome (UHS) is a rare clinical manifestation of an upper cervical cord lesion, which is most commonly associated with multiple sclerosis (MS). The pathophysiological mechanism underlying UHS remains unclear. CASE: We report a 25-year-old woman, who described numbness in her left upper extremity. Cervical magnetic resonance imaging revealed a posterior upper cervical cord lesion. There was no cortical lesion that could explain the clinical findings. We measured (1) short-latency afferent inhibition (SAI) by obtaining motor evoked potentials as an indicator of sensorimotor integration and (2) somatosensorial temporal discrimination threshold (STDT) to display central somatosensory pathway function. In the right cerebral hemisphere, we found an excessive increase in STDT and no inhibition in the SAI paradigm. CONCLUSIONS: These findings indicate that impairment of sensorimotor integration and central processing of sensory stimuli cause useless hand syndrome.

RESUMO

We studied the effect of di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) on rat hair deposition of Iron (Fe), Copper (Cu), Manganese (Mn), and Zinc (Zn). Four groups, each of eight of female Wistar rats weighing 250-300 g, were randomly distributed to (1) control (corn oil-based diet), (2) DEHP 20 (20 mg DEHP per kg body weight (bw), (3) DEHP 100 (100mg DEHP kg/bw, and (4) DEHP 500 (500 mg DEHP kg/bw). The diets were fed daily for 14 days by gastric gavage before the rats were sacrificed. Hair content of Fe, Cu, Mn, and Zn was analyzed with atomic absorption spectrophotometry. There were no significant effect of DEHP on hair Fe content. However, hair Cu, Mn, and Zn were increased after DEHP 20 exposure (p<0.001). After administering DEHP 100 and DEHP 500, both Mn and Zn were decreased (p<0.001), respectively. Hair deposition of Cu, Mn, and Zn was affected by DEHP.

RESUMO

Na-ion batteries represent a promising complementary alternative to Li-ion batteries due to their high energy density and natural abundancy of Na. However, these batteries have short cycle life and extensive research activities on these batteries are required to understand the mechanism of such drawbacks. In this report, we investigate the capacity fading mechanism of Na0.44MnO2via ex situ X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and magnetization measurements. Our results show that the unit cell volume, the effective mass of Mn-O bonds, the number of Mn4+ ions and the effective magnetic moment decrease upon repeated cycling. We propose that some Mn4+ ions in the octahedral environment become Mn3+ ions in a square pyramidal environment, causing oxygen release upon cycling. Any free oxygen in the battery is expected to react with the electrolyte and cause capacity fade.
