RESUMO

The aim of the study was to map evidence on the association between phase angle (PhA) and body composition in populations healthy and clinical populations). A systematic search for information regarding the topic was conducted in nine electronic databases (CINAHL, LILACS, PubMed, SciELO, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, Science Direct, MEDLINE and Web of Science) between October and November 2021. Studies with different designs, which allowed extracting information about the relationship between PhA and body composition (body cell mass [BCM], muscle tissue, bone mineral content, lean mass, total fat mass, visceral fat, and lean soft tissue mass [LSTM]) were included. Of the total of 11,913 initially identified studies, 59 were included after reading titles, abstracts, full texts and references. Most studies (40.67%; n = 24) presented data from Brazilian samples. With regard to the design of studies, 15 (25.42%) had longitudinal design. The age group of studies was wide, with studies involved 3-year-old children and 88-year-old adults. Body fat mass was evaluated by 31 studies (52.54%) in which 11 observed inverse relationships, nine studies showed direct relationships and 11 observed no relationship. Regarding lean mass, muscle mass, and fat-free mass components, most studies observed direct relationship with PhA (n = 37; 86.04%). It could be concluded that the phase angle was directly associated with lean mass and muscle mass in different age groups (children, adolescents, adults and older adults) and in people with different health diagnoses (HIV, cancer, hemodialysis, sarcopenia and without the diagnosis of diseases). Regarding body fat and the other investigated components, there is not enough evidence to establish the direction of associations.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Metabolic alterations and body fat redistribution are common in people living with HIV using antiretroviral therapy and increase the risk of premature cardiovascular diseases. AIM: To verify the presence of difference in the lipid and glycemic profile in relation to different total body and trunk fat phenotypes in children and adolescents diagnosed with HIV+. METHOD: This is a cross-sectional study carried out with 62 children and adolescents diagnosed with HIV+. Lipid and glycemic profiles were obtained from blood samples. Total and trunk fat mass (FM) was obtained by DXA. Analysis of covariance was used to verify if there is difference in the lipid and glycemic profile between total body and trunk fat phenotypes. RESULTS: In males, in the covariate-adjusted model, it was observed that boys with high total FM had higher triglyceride values (mean: 164.9 mg/dl-1 ±31.2) compared to those with low and adequate total FM. In females, in adjusted models, it was observed that girls with high total FM had higher total cholesterol (mean: 181.6 mg/dl-1 ±13.8) and LDL-C values (mean: 111.8 mg/dl-1 ±12.0), compared to those with low and adequate total FM. Girls with trunk FM had higher total cholesterol (mean: 181.6 mg/dl-1 ± 13.8), LDL-C (mean: 71.3 mg/dl-1 ± 9.6) and blood glucose values (91.6 mg/dl-1 ± 2.2). CONCLUSION: Boys with high total FM had higher triglyceride levels, while in females, it was observed that girls with high total FM and high trunk FM had higher total cholesterol, LDL-C and blood glucose values. High body fat in children and adolescents living with HIV is related to metabolic changes in the lipid and glycemic profile, with specificities of sex and fat location.

RESUMO

The identification of somatic growth, through reference curves, can be used to create strategies and public policies to reduce public health problems such as malnutrition and obesity and to identify underweight, overweight and obesity. The purpose of this systematic review was to identify studies providing reference growth curves for weight status in children and adolescents. A systematic search was conducted in eight databases and in gray literature (Google scholar). To assess the risk of bias/methodological quality of studies, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-sectional Studies (NHLBI) was used. Overall, 86 studies that met the inclusion criteria were included. Through the values   of reference growth curves for the identification of underweight, overweight and obesity, it was possible to verify that there is great variability among percentiles for the identification of underweight, overweight and obesity. The most prevalent percentiles for underweight were P3 and P5; for overweight, the most prevalent was P85 and the most prevalent percentiles for obesity were P95 and P97. The most prevalent anthropometric indicators were Body Mass Index (BMI), Waist Circumference (WC), Body Mass (BM) for age and height for age. Conclusion: Such data can demonstrate that the optimal growth must be reached, through the standard growth curves, but that the reference curves demonstrate a cut of the population growth, raising possible variables that can influence the optimal growth, such as an increase in the practice of physical activities and an awareness of proper nutrition.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To describe the methodological aspects and characteristics of the participants of the EPOCA survey. METHODS: The study was conducted with schoolchildren aged between seven to 14 years old from 30 schools in Florianópolis, Southern Brazil. Body mass, height, girths, and skinfold thicknesses were measured. Food consumption and physical activity from the previous day were self-reported using the validated Web-CAAFE questionnaire. Adolescents completed a specific questionnaire about physical activity, meal consumption, and weight control behaviors. Parents/guardians responded to a sociodemographic and habits questionnaire. RESULTS: A total of 1671 schoolchildren participated in the study (response rate: 27.2%). About 63% of schoolchildren were enrolled in public schools. Most studied in the morning shift (54.2%), were female (53.1%) and aged between seven and 10 years (58.1%). The prevalence of overweight was 33.7% and obesity was 11.3%. CONCLUSIONS: The data obtained will allow us to assess the trend in the prevalence of overweight and obesity and associated factors when compared to other surveys performed. Descriptions of the logistics and protocols can help in the development and improvement of similar studies. It is hoped that the results of EPOCA 2018/2019 may help in the design of obesity prevention policies and programs for this population.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: During childhood and adolescence, there are significant increases in bone mineral content (BMC) and bone mineral density (BMD). OBJECTIVE: To investigate physical growth parameters associated with BMD and BMC among children and adolescents diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional study conducted in Florianópolis, Brazil, among 63 children and adolescents (aged 8-15 years) diagnosed with HIV. METHOD: BMD, BMC and fat percentage z score were evaluated using dual X-ray absorptiometry. Age/height z score and body mass index (BMI)/age z score were obtained in accordance with international recommendations, and bone age was obtained through hand-wrist radiography. Sex, family income, information on HIV infection (T CD4+ lymphocyte count, viral load and type of antiretroviral therapy, moderate-vigorous physical activity and sedentary behavior) were used as adjustment variables in the analyses. Simple and multiple linear regression analyses were performed, with a significance level of P ≤ 0.05. RESULTS: Subtotal BMD (without the head region) was directly associated with bone age, BMI/age z score and fat percentage z score, even after adjusting for covariates. Subtotal BMC/height was directly associated with bone age, height/age z score, BMI/age z score and fat percentage z score, even after adjusting for covariates. CONCLUSION: Subtotal BMD and subtotal BMC/height were directly associated with physical growth indicators among children and adolescents diagnosed with HIV.

RESUMO

Background: HIV infection and prolonged use of antiretroviral therapy (ART) can impact the body composition and muscle strength of HIV-infected children and adolescents. Therefore, the aim was to verify the association between lean soft tissue mass (LSTM) and handgrip strength (HGS) in children and adolescents diagnosed with HIV using or not using ART (with or without protease inhibitors [PI]).Method: Cross-sectional study with 65 children and adolescents diagnosed with HIV aged 8-15 years of both sexes. LSTM was obtained through dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and HGS using hydraulic dynamometer. Information on viral load, CD4+ T lymphocytes and type of ART (with or without [PI]) were obtained from medical records. Simple and multiple linear regression (adjusted for viral load and CD4+ T lymphocytes) was used, with p < 0.05.Results: For children and adolescents diagnosed with HIV using ART without PI, the model (LSTM, viral load and CD4+ T lymphocytes) explained 68% of HGS variability. For group with ART and PI, the model explained 73%. For group that did not use ART, the model was not associated with HGS.Conclusion: The magnitude of the association between LSTM and HGS was greater than in children and adolescents using ART with PI. ImpactIt is recognized that in the long-term antiretroviral drugs can negatively impact the body composition of children and adolescents diagnosed with HIV. However, few studies have investigated the short-term impact of drug use.The use of antiretroviral therapy (ART) with protease inhibitor (PI) increased the explanatory power of lean soft tissue mass with muscle strength in children and adolescents diagnosed with HIV.These results demonstrate the importance of antiretroviral drugs in the short term. Further studies are needed to identify how and when interventions are needed to reduce the negative effects of drugs in the long term.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Studies that test associations between anthropometric indicators and insulin resistance (IR) need to provide better evidence in the context of the pediatric population (children and adolescents) with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), as anthropometric indicators present a better explanation of the distribution of body fat. OBJECTIVE: To test the associations between anthropometric indicators and insulin resistance (IR) among children and adolescents diagnosed with HIV. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional study on 65 children and adolescents (8-15 years) infected with HIV through vertical transmission conducted at the Joana de Gusmão Children's Hospital, Florianópolis, Brazil. METHODS: The anthropometric indicators measured were the abdominal (ASF), triceps (TSF), subscapular (SSF) and calf (CSF) skinfolds. The relaxed arm (RAC), waist (WC) and neck (NC) circumferences were also measured. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated from the relationship between body mass and height. IR was calculated through the Homeostasis Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR). Simple and multiple linear regression analyses were used. RESULTS: After adjustment for covariates (sex, bone age, CD4+ T lymphocytes, CD8+ T lymphocytes, viral load, and physical activity), associations between IR and models with SSF and CSF remained. Each of these explained 20% of IR variability. For females, in the adjusted analyses, direct associations between IR and models with ASF (R² = 0.26) and TSF (R² = 0.31) were observed. CONCLUSIONS: SSF and CSF in males and ASF and TSF in females were associated with IR in HIV-infected children and adolescents.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the discriminatory power of anthropometric indicators of body fat (BF) for identifying low levels of cardiorespiratory fitness, as well as the association between cutoff points and low levels of cardiorespiratory fitness in adolescents. DESIGN AND METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study involving 1132 students (age 14-19 years). The following anthropometric variables were measured according to international standards: body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), triceps skinfold thickness (TR), subscapular skinfold (SS), suprailiac skinfold (SI), sum of triceps and subscapular skinfolds (∑TR + SS), and sum of triceps, subscapular and suprailiac skinfolds (∑TR + SS + SI). The BF percentage was calculated using the equations of Lohman (1986) (%FL), Slaughter et al. (1988) (%FS), and Boileau et al. (1985) (%FB). RESULTS: Except for TR, WC, WHtR and BMI, boys with values for the other anthropometric indicators (SS, SI, ∑TR + SS, ∑TR + SS + SI, %FL, %FS, %FB) above the cutoff point were more likely to have low levels of cardiorespiratory fitness. Girls with values for TR, ∑TR + SS, %FB and %FL above the cutoff points were more likely to have low levels of cardiorespiratory fitness. CONCLUSIONS: Anthropometric indicators had discriminatory power to identify low levels of cardiorespiratory fitness. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: The reported anthropometric indicators, indexes and equations can be used by healthcare professionals in clinical practice and by school teachers as a simple, fast and inexpensive alternative to identify low levels of cardiorespiratory fitness.

RESUMO

Introduction: physical inactivity is a major public health problem. It is necessary to acquire healthy behaviors in childhood, since the habits acquired tend to last until adult life. Objective: the aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence and characteristics related to sport practice in adolescents from a city in southern Brazil. Methods: a cross-sectional, epidemiological study was carried out with 582 adolescents aged 11-17 years. Independent, dependent variables and covariates were evaluated by means of questionnaire. Body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) were measured. Multinomial logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval. Results: students from public and private schools who did not participate in any sport team were more likely of presenting abdominal obesity (OR: 2.17; 95% CI: 1.16-5.09 and OR: 2.15; 95% CI: 1.13-4.09, respectively) and not practicing sports in childhood (OR: 1.38; 95% CI: 0.98-2.45 and OR: 1.87; 95% CI: 1.98-2.80, respectively), and those who participated in one sport team were more likely of not practicing sports in childhood (OR: 2.60; 95% CI: 1.45-4.65 and OR: 1.26; 95% CI: 1.20 -1.33, respectively), when compared to those who participated in two or more sport teams. Students from public school who participated in one sport teams were more likely of having abdominal obesity (OR: 3.50; 95% CI: 1.02-12.92) when compared to adolescents who participated in two or more sport teams. Conclusions: results can help in possible school-based interventions to promote sport practice.

Introduction: Few studies have explored the outcome of hemodynamic components in cancer survivors in physical exercise programs. Objective: The main objective of this study was to verify acute and chronic changes in systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure during an exercise program for breast cancer survivors. Method: In a referral hospital, 24 surviving women participated in a physical exercise program. The BP was monitored with a digital wrist monitor, before and after the sessions. For pre and post-exercise comparison in each session, the t test for paired samples was used. For analysis of chronic effects, analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used, with repeated measures to identify possible differences in pre-exercise variables SBP and DBP throughout the 15 sessions. The level of significance was 5%. Results: It was noticed that, with the exception of the fourth and sixth sessions, the SBP levels decreased in all sessions after exercise (p≤0.05). For DBP, there was only a significant decrease after exercise in the first three sessions. For chronic effects, there was an average reduction in the values of SBP at rest throughout the sessions, with a hypotensive effect above 70% from the seventh session (p≤0.05). In DBP, differences in SBP values at rest were accentuated after the tenth session; when comparing with the values of DBP at rest, a hypotensive effect above 94% was observed. Conclusion: Survivors who adhered to the physical exercise program showed acute and chronic reduction in SBP and DBP

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Introduction: Low aerobic fitness levels are associated with excess body adiposity in adolescents. However, studies that have analyzed this association in adolescents have used different methods and measures to evaluate aerobic fitness, making it difficult to compare the results. Objective: To conduct a systematic review with meta-analysis of studies that have analyzed the association between aerobic fitness and anthropometric body adiposity indicators in adolescents aged 10-19 years. Methods: A systematic search was performed in May 2016, updated in March 2017, in the following electronic databases: LILACS (BIREME), Embase, MEDLINE (PubMed), Web of Science (Web of Knowledge), Scopus, and SPORTDiscus. Results: Twenty-three studies were selected. The meta-analysis indicated that as the aerobic fitness levels increased, the BMI, waist circumference and body fat percentage values of the adolescents decreased. Conclusion: There is a negative association between aerobic fitness (evaluated by measuring maximum oxygen uptake in the 20-meter Shuttle Run test) and the body fat percentage, BMI and waist circumference of adolescents and a negative association between aerobic fitness (assessed by measuring the number of laps in the 20-meter Shuttle Run test) and body fat percentage. However, caution is required in the interpretation of data due to the heterogeneity of the studies analyzed. Level of Evidence II; Systematic review of studies with level II of evidence.

ABSTRACT Introduction: The assessment of body composition in female athletes of different sports is important for health monitoring. Objective: To compare body composition in university athletes of different team sports (indoor soccer, flag football and volleyball). Methods: A cross-sectional study carried out with 45 female athletes, aged 18 to 35 years (22.8 ± 3.55). The dependent variables were body fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM) measured by air displacement plethysmography. Bone mineral content, adjusted for height (BMC/height) and bone mineral density (BMD), were measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. The independent variable was sport [flag football (n = 12); indoor soccer (n = 20); volleyball (n = 13)] and the covariates were age (complete years), training volume (minutes per week) and length of time playing the sport (complete years). Analysis of covariance was used. Results: Adjusting the model for covariates, volleyball athletes (19.27 kg ± 2.20) presented higher FM values compared to the flag football (16.00 kg ± 1.70) and indoor soccer players (12.20 kg ± 1.30). There was no significant difference in FFM, BMC/height and total BMD between sports, even after adjusting for covariates. Conclusion: Volleyball athletes presented higher FM compared to flag football and indoor soccer athletes. There were no differences in FFM, BMC/height and BMD among the players of the different team sports. This study can help coaches and other sports professionals to prevent injuries to athletes in sports such as higher FM (volleyball), or to prevent diseases such as menstrual irregularities, which are common in athletes who may have low levels of body fat (indoor soccer players), this being one of the risk factors for the female athlete triad (eating disorders, menstrual irregularities and low BMD). Level of evidence III; Retrospective comparative study .

PURPOSE: verify whether there is difference in body fat values assessed by different methods according to the body image perception of HIV-infected children and adolescents. DESIGN AND METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study with 65 HIV-infected children and adolescents (aged 8-15 years). Total fat mass, trunk fat mass, arm fat mass and leg fat mass were obtained through dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Anthropometric variables were measured according to international standardization. Body image was assessed using a scale of body silhouettes. Bone age covariates were assessed using carpal wrist X-rays and physical activity by accelerometers. Information regarding viral load and use of combined antiretroviral therapy was obtained from medical records. In males, no significant difference in body fat values and body image categories was observed. RESULTS: In the model with covariates, girls who desired to reduce body weight had higher BMI (18.96 kg / m2 ± 2.47, R2 adj: 0.613), total fat mass (14.25 kg ± 1.37, R2 adj: 0.589), trunk fat mass (6.50 kg ± 0.66, R2 adj: 0.611) and leg fat mass values (6.01Kg ± 0.57, R2 adj: 0.503) in comparison to girls who were satisfied and to those who desired to increase body weight. CONCLUSIONS: HIV + girls who desired to reduce body weight had greater amount of BMI, total fat mass, trunk fat mass and leg fat mass compared to those who were satisfied and those who desired to increase body weight. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: These data can be used to assist in the process of coping and accepting body image.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To examine the capacity of physiological variables and performance to predict peak oxygen consumption (peak V˙ O2) in children and adolescents living with HIV. METHOD: Sixty-five children and adolescents living with HIV (30 boys) aged 8-15 years, participated in the study. Peak V˙ O2 was measured by breath-by-breath respiratory exchange during an incremental cycle ergometer until volitional exhaustion. Information on the time to exhaustion, maximal power output (Pmax), and peak heart rate (peak HR) were also recorded. RESULTS: Predictive models were developed and all equations showed the ability of performance variables to predict peak V˙ O2. However, Model 1 was based only on Pmax by following equation: Y = 338.8302 + (Pmax [W] * 11.16435), R2 = 0.90 and standard error of estimation (SEE) = 180 ml ⋅ min-1. CONCLUSION: The V˙ O2 peak can be predicted simply by the Pmax obtained from the incremental cycle ergometer test. This protocol is a valid and useful tool for monitoring the aerobic fitness of children and adolescents living with HIV, especially in resource-limited settings.

RESUMO

Abstract The study aimed to systematically review the literature to identify the prevalence of Brazilian children and adolescents that meet health criteria for cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF). The search was performed in the electronic databases (PubMED, SciELO, LILACS, Scopus, SPORTDiscus and Web of Science) and list of references of identified articles. Inclusion criteria were: population composed of children and/or adolescents (0-19 years or average age up to 19 years); studies with Brazilian children and/or adolescents and observational studies with cross-sectional or longitudinal design. The process of analysis of studies involved reading titles, abstracts and full texts. After these phases, 60 articles were eligible. Regarding the design, two studies were longitudinal. Of the total studies included, 49 presented moderate methodological quality values and 11 presented low methodological quality values, according to National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute instrument. The prevalence of children and adolescents who met CRF health criteria varied among studies (7.5% to 70.4%), and this variation was higher in girls than in boys. Total of 49.093 individuals aged 6-19 years were surveyed to compute all of these studies, resulting in 32.2% of subjects (27.7% of boys and 28.4% of girls) with CRF levels adequate for health around Brazil. These results may help to screen the pediatric population at risk if CRF is considered as a health measure.

Abstract The aim of this study was to assess the validity of traditional anthropometric equations and to develop predictive equations of total body and trunk fat for children and adolescents living with HIV based on anthropometric measurements. Forty-eight children and adolescents of both sexes (24 boys) aged 7-17 years, living in Santa Catarina, Brazil, participated in the study. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used as the reference method to evaluate total body and trunk fat. Height, body weight, circumferences and triceps, subscapular, abdominal and calf skinfolds were measured. The traditional equations of Lohman and Slaughter were used to estimate body fat. Multiple regression models were fitted to predict total body fat (Model 1) and trunk fat (Model 2) using a backward selection procedure. Model 1 had an R2 = 0.85 and a standard error of the estimate of 1.43. Model 2 had an R2 = 0.80 and standard error of the estimate = 0.49. The traditional equations of Lohman and Slaughter showed poor performance in estimating body fat in children and adolescents living with HIV. The prediction models using anthropometry provided reliable estimates and can be used by clinicians and healthcare professionals to monitor total body and trunk fat in children and adolescents living with HIV.

RESUMO

Abstract Excess body fat is associated with chronic degenerative diseases, being a global public health problem. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of obesity with sociodemographic factors, lifestyle (physical activity, dietary habits) and sexual maturation in high school students of a city in southern Brazil. This is a cross-sectional study with 820 adolescents enrolled in public high schools of São José, Santa Catarina, Brazil, aged 14-17 years. Obesity was estimated by body fat percentage (BF%). BF% was calculated using the Lohman equation, which considers the sum of skinfolds (triceps and subscapularis). Cutoff points proposed by William et al. were used to classify individuals into normal weight or obese. Independent variables were sex, age, economic status, parental education, eating habits, physical activity and sexual maturation. The prevalence of obesity was 17.2%. Females (OR: 4.22; 95% CI: 2.72-6.54) and young people at post-pubertal stage of sexual maturation (OR: 1.95; 95% CI: 1.33-2.86) were more likely to have obesity. These results may help health authorities in the planning of public policies to prevent obesity.

INTRODUCTION: Suicide refers to the conscious desire to die, and suicidal behavior is divided into three stages (thinking, planning and attempted suicide). OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of thinking, planning and suicide attempt and identify the sociodemographic characteristics and lifestyle among adolescents in southern Brazil. METHODS: Cross-sectional study with 1,132 adolescents from public schools in São José, Santa Catarina, Brazil, aged 14-19 years. The thinking, planning and attempted suicide were evaluated by three different questions, taken from the questionnaire Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The independent variables were gender, age, skin color, economic status, sleep quality, perception of body weight, level of physical activity and alcohol consumption. RESULTS: The prevalence of thinking, planning and attempted suicide were respectively 13.8%, 10.5% and 5.5%. Neither crude nor adjusted analysis, the younger adolescents (14-16 years) had the characteristic of suicidal thinking. Teens who slept well had not characteristic they thought, planning and suicide attempt. Finally, adolescents with poor perception of body weight had the characteristic of suicidal thinking. CONCLUSION: Adolescents with suicidal thinking presented characteristic of being young and having inadequate body weight perception. One in ten teenagers thought and planned suicide. Regarding suicide attempt, the ratio was less than one. In addition, adolescents affected by thinking, planning and suicide attempt, had the characteristic not sleep well.
