RESUMO

The magnesium-zinc ferrites Mg1-xZnxFe2O4 (x = 0…1) were studied as magnetic sorbents for environmental applications. Low-temperature Mössbauer spectroscopy was used to determine the distribution of magnesium and ferric ions in the spinel crystal lattice. The influence of Zn content on magnetic parameters was investigated on the basis of VSM data. As the molar ratio of zinc to magnesium increases from 0 to 1, the pHPZC value decreases from 10.5 to 8.9. Langmuir and Freundlich models were used to check whether single-layer or multi-layer adsorption occurs. The adsorption of Cr(VI) and Ni(II) ions is well fitted by the Langmuir equation. To check the physical or chemical nature of the sorption process, the Dubinin-Radushkevich equation was used. It was found that the processes of adsorption of Cr(VI) and Ni(II) ions are of a chemical nature. The best Cr(VI) ion adsorption capacity was found for the Mg0·2Zn0·8Fe2O4 sample (qe = 30.49 mg/g). The percentage of heavy metal removal by the mixed ferrite samples increases with increasing zinc content. The most effective sorbent for Ni(II) removal is the Mg0·4Zn0·6Fe2O4 sample (93.2%). Modeling the antistructure provides deeper insight into the mechanism of heavy metal adsorption. The obtained magnesium-zinc ferrites are promising magnetic adsorbents for removing chromate and nickel ions from the environment.

RESUMO

We report on an extended cavity quantum cascade laser based on a cavity resonator integrated grating filter (CRIGF) that acts as both cavity end-reflector and spectral selector. Stable, mode-hop free, single-mode emission around 2150 cm-1 is obtained over large injection current ranges (more than 50 mA) with a typical threshold around 290 mA. A digital frequency tuning over more than 65 cm-1 is obtained by changing the periodicity of the CRIGF ending the extended cavity.

RESUMO

Cavity Resonator Grating Filters (CRIGFs) working in the Mid-Infrared are reported, with narrow-band resonant reflectivity peaks around 2200 cm-1 (4.6 µm). They are fabricated in the GaAs/AlGaAs material system that can potentially cover the whole [1-12] µm spectral range. TE-polarized peak reflectivity is 30% with a 4 cm-1 full width at half maximum.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the dosimetric contribution of helical tomotherapy for breast cancers compared with conformal radiotherapy in mono-isocentric technique. PATIENTS AND METHOD: For 23 patients, the dosimetric results in mono-isocentric 3D conformational radiotherapy did not satisfy the constraints either of target volumes nor organs at risk. A prospective dosimetric comparison between mono-isocentric 3D conformational radiotherapy and helical tomotherapy was therefore carried out. RESULTS: The use of helical tomotherapy showed a benefit in these 23 patients, with either an improvement in the conformity index or homogeneity, but with an increase in low doses. Of the 23 patients, two had pectus excavatum, five had past thoracic irradiation and two required bilateral irradiation. The other 14 patients had a combination of morphology and/or indication of lymph node irradiation. For these patients, helical tomotherapy was therefore preferred to mono-isocentric 3D conformational radiotherapy. CONCLUSIONS: Tomotherapy appears to provide better homogeneity and tumour coverage. This technique of irradiation may be justified in the case of morphological situations such as pectus exavatum and in complex clinical situations. In other cases, conformal radiotherapy in mono-isocentric technique remains to be favoured.

RESUMO

We present the optical optimization of an optomechanical device based on a suspended InP membrane patterned with a 2D near-wavelength grating (NWG) based on a 2D photonic-crystal geometry. We first identify by numerical simulation a set of geometrical parameters providing a reflectivity higher than 99.8% over a 50-nm span. We then study the limitations induced by the finite value of the optical waist and lateral size of the NWG pattern using different numerical approaches. The NWG grating, pierced in a suspended InP 265-nm thick membrane, is used to form a compact microcavity involving the suspended nanomembrane as an end mirror. The resulting cavity has a waist size smaller than 10 µm and a finesse in the 200 range. It is used to probe the Brownian motion of the mechanical modes of the nanomembrane.

RESUMO

This report describes the clinical features and outcome of 61 pediatric hospitalized patients with influenza-like infection. Fever, cough and respiratory distress were the most common symptoms of the infection. Fifteen patients presented positive RT-PCR results for influenza A (H1N1). The group with positive results was compared with the negative one. The main significant difference was antibiotic usage and the need of mechanical ventilation in the patients with H1N1-virus infection. Among the 11 patients who required intensive care due to respiratory failure, 3 from the positive group died and none from the negative group.

RESUMO

CD4 Th cells producing the proinflammatory cytokine IL-17 (Th17) have been implicated in a number of inflammatory arthritides including the spondyloarthritides. Th17 development is promoted by IL-23. Ankylosing spondylitis, the most common spondyloarthritis (SpA), is genetically associated with both HLA-B27 (B27) and IL-23R polymorphisms; however, the link remains unexplained. We have previously shown that B27 can form H chain dimers (termed B27(2)), which, unlike classical HLA-B27, bind the killer-cell Ig-like receptor KIR3DL2. In this article, we show that B27(2)-expressing APCs stimulate the survival, proliferation, and IL-17 production of KIR3DL2(+) CD4 T cells. KIR3DL2(+) CD4 T cells are expanded and enriched for IL-17 production in the blood and synovial fluid of patients with SpA. Despite KIR3DL2(+) cells comprising a mean of just 15% of CD4 T in the peripheral blood of SpA patients, this subset accounted for 70% of the observed increase in Th17 numbers in SpA patients compared with control subjects. TCR-stimulated peripheral blood KIR3DL2(+) CD4 T cell lines from SpA patients secreted 4-fold more IL-17 than KIR3DL2(+) lines from controls or KIR3DL2(-) CD4 T cells. Strikingly, KIR3DL2(+) CD4 T cells account for the majority of peripheral blood CD4 T cell IL-23R expression and produce more IL-17 in the presence of IL-23. Our findings link HLA-B27 with IL-17 production and suggest new therapeutic strategies in ankylosing spondylitis/SpA.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Cocaine and metabolites can be found in the amniotic fluid after maternal use, presumably as a result of fetal urination. The fetus may be repeatedly exposed to the effects of these drugs through contact with amniotic fluid that contains these substances. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the naive fetal lamb generates detectable fetal blood levels of cocaine and metabolites when cocaine is placed directly into the amniotic fluid and, if so, whether fetal swallowing accounts for these findings. STUDY DESIGN: Six pregnant ewes with singleton fetuses of 120 to 125 days' gestation were chronically catheterized for daily sampling of cocaine and metabolite levels in maternal venous plasma, fetal venous plasma, and amniotic fluid over a 7-day period. Esophageal ligation was performed in three additional animals similarly instrumented to evaluate the role of fetal swallowing in the distribution of amniotic fluid cocaine and its metabolites. In each case, at the time of surgery, an Alzet osmotic pump delivering cocaine at 0.5 mg/kg estimated fetal weight per hour into the amniotic fluid was secured to the fetal back. Cocaine and metabolites (benzoylecgonine, ecgonine methyl ester, and norcocaine) were measured daily in material and fetal plasma, amniotic fluid, and meconium by solid-phase extraction and derivatization and quantified by high-performance gas chromatographic techniques. RESULTS: The concentrations of ecgonine methyl ester were highest in the amniotic fluid followed by cocaine and benzoylecgonine. In the normal and esophagus-ligated groups, cocaine, benzoylecgonine, and norcocaine were found in fetal plasma in concentrations of approximately 3% that of amniotic fluid. Ecgonine methyl ester was not detected in fetal plasma from either group. Meconium samples from sheep with and without esophageal ligation demonstrated high levels of norcocaine. CONCLUSION: We conclude that cocaine and metabolites in amniotic fluid enter the fetal circulation to produce detectable plasma levels through routes other than swallowing. Moreover, the results of meconium analyses in the two groups of fetuses suggest that fetal swallowing is not the primary mechanism by which cocaine and metabolites enter the intestine.
