RESUMO

Body composition assessment is often used in clinical practice to assess and monitor nutritional status. For example, body fat mass is a predictor of metabolic diseases, and for an athlete it is a criterion of performance. "Gold standard" - the method of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry - in contrast to bioelectrical impedance analysis, is difficult to apply in everyday clinical practice. Therefore, it becomes relevant to compare the consistency of measured body fat mass using densitometry and bioimpedanceometry. The aim of the study was to perform a comparative analysis of body fat mass estimated by bioimpedanceometry (two bioelectric impedance devices and three household scales with a function of determining body composition) and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Material and methods. Sixteen healthy, physically active adults aged 25 [23; 26] years, male (n=7) and female (n=9), participated in the cross-sectional study. Body composition was assessed under standard conditions in the morning, after a 12-hour fast, using densitometry (Stratos Dr X-ray densitometer) and bioimpedanceometry [bioelectric impedance devices: Medass ABC-01, Diamant AIST (with manufacturer's predictive equations); household scales with a function of determining body composition: Tanita BC-718, Picooc Mini, Scarlett SC-216]. Statistical analysis was performed using Statistica 10 package (StatSoft, USA), and included Friedman's chi-criterion, Lin's correlation concordance coefficient, Bland-Altman method, Spearman's correlation coefficient, and Wilcoxon's criterion with Bonferroni correction for multiple studies. Results. None of the bioimpedanceometry devices studied showed a relationship (Bland- Altman coefficient >0.2) or consistency (Lin's correlation concordance coefficient <0.9) when compared to densitometry, although Spearman correlation was moderate for Tanita BC-718 (r=0.603, p<0.05), Diamant AIST (r=0.641, p<0.01) and Scarlett SC-216 (r=0.609, p<0.05), and notable for Medass ABC-01 (r=0.841, p<0.01) and Picooc Mini (r=0.718, p<0.01). Conclusion. This study found that no bioelectrical impedance device has consistency with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry in assessing body fat mass. Since the accuracy of body fat mass measurement is critical in body composition diagnosis, the assessment results obtained by bioimpedanceometry should be interpreted with caution.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: In recent years there has been an increasing interest in the drug treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) to improve the patients quality of life without surgical treatment. In this connection, phytotherapeutic drugs and biologically active dietary supplements (BADS), consisting of a combination of microelements, vitamins and plant extracts, have been increasingly used in addition to synthetic preparations. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical effectiveness of dietary supplement ProstaDoz in the treatment of BPH with coexistent high-grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study group comprised 30 men with BPH and high-grade PIN who were diagnosed with primary biopsy and received ProstaDoz for three months. The control group included 18 patients with the same diagnosis who were treated with Tamsulosin. RESULTS: After a 3-month intake of the ProstaDoz, a statistically significant reduction was observed in symptom scores for BPH and the quality of life index by 18% (p<0.001) and 16.7% (p<0.001), respectively. The residual urine volume and total serum PSA decreased by 28.3% (p<0.001) and 46.8% (p<0.001), respectively. Unlike the control group, the rate of prostate cancer detection was 6.25 times lower in patients taking ProstaDoz, and 16% of them had lower grade PIN compared with baseline or no PIN at all. CONCLUSION: The findings suggest that using ProstaDoz in patients with BPH and high-grade PIN contributes to improving the quality of life (QoL) of patients and the regression of dysplasia.

RESUMO

We performed a comparative morphometric and immunohistochemical studies of the placentas collected in preterm labor after 27-33-week gestation. Predominating branched angiogenesis processes and more pronounced vascularization of the placental villi were found in the group of newborns with hemorrhagic complications. These changes were paralleled by high expression of VEGF in all villous structures.

RESUMO

Effects of low doses of ethanol on indices of spatial organization of cortical potentials (spatial synchronization, coherence, spectral power and information-power index) under the closed- and open-eyes conditions and during performance of divergent and convergent non-verbal and verbal tasks. Ethanol effect was shown to be more expressed under the open eyes-conditions as compared to that with the closed eyes. This finding may be associated with the greater effect of the stream of afferent information in the former case. Changes in topographical characteristics of the spatial synchronization of cortical potentials were more clearly localized and "specific" during divergent thinking as compared to the convergent type. Changes in the spectral power and information-power index testify to greater sensitivity to ethanol of divergent type of thinking as compared to convergent type. Psychological testing of stress resistance and impulsivity also showed a greater effect of ethanol on divergent thinking.

RESUMO

Features of neurophysiological organization of two main thinking types playing different roles in creative processes, i.e., divergent and convergent were studied with participation of 30 right-handed male subjects at the age from 30 to 50 years. Two tests were presented: (1) creation of many visual images on the basis of two simple geometrical figures (the model of divergent thinking) and (2) classification of a figure element with one of the offered standard samples (convergent thinking). The number of created images or correctly classified elements for five minutes served a criterion of performance productivity. It was found that performance of the divergent test with high productivity (as compared to low productivity) was characterized by a greater increase in non-linear interactions between the cortical potentials, especially in the axis right frontal--left occipital areas. At the same time, under conditions of high productivity, the number of active narrow-frequency spectral-coherent EEG bands increased. The data confirm the notion of neurophysiological organization of creative processes, according to which creative processes require the intensification of retrieval operations (both conscious and unconscious), based on extensive interhemispheric interaction and involvement of a system of EEG coherent structures oscillating with different frequencies.

RESUMO

The authors evaluate working clothes protecting against electromagnetic waves and chemical pollution to exemplify that the clothes use in heating surroundings deteriorates human heat state due to disordered heat-mass exchange with environment and higher physical exertion caused by the clothes weight. The article demonstrates necessity to correct requirements to microclimate parameters, if using working clothes deteriorating heat-mass exchange with environment in heating microclimate. For adequate evaluation of work conditions, the materials include temperature modification values in accordance with some working clothes types.

RESUMO

Fifty-eight neonatal infants with hyaline membrane disease (HMD) and congenital pneumonia were examined in the critical status. In 32 of them, high-frequency oscillatory lung ventilation (HFOLV) was employed. The use of HFOLV was found to reduce the length of stay in neonates on toxic oxygen concentrations by more than 2 times and to accelerate the normalization of ventilation-perfusion relationships by more than 3 times. A study of the basic parameters of central and regional hemodynamics showed that HFOLV failed to affect the patients' hemodynamic status. The efficiency of correction of severe respiratory disorders in neonatal infants with HMD was ascertained to increase with the combined use of the Russian surfactant and HFOLV. A formula was developed to calculate the starting amplitude of oscillations when HFOLV was employed. The maximum allowable values of mean airway pressure at which HFOLV could be discontinued were determined, which prevented the regimens from toughening when HFOLV was changed to the routine artificial ventilation. The use of HFOLV was established to reduce the risk of severe cerebral structural and vascular lesions and mortality rates.

RESUMO

Influence of anxiety (tested by Luscher) on the spatial organization of brain electrical activity was studied using multichannel EEG recording. In subjects with a high-level of anxiety, the level of coherence and spectral power of some high-frequency EEG components was higher in the parieto-temporal regions of both hemispheres than that in the opposite group. Solving the inverse problem (classification of individuals with one of the groups) made it possible to work out the criteria of automated evaluation of the anxiety level at the preclinic state of neuropsychic disorders. The EEG signs of the influence of increased anxiety on psychophysiological and cognitive processes and autonomic functions were analyzed. The EEG signs of increased anxiety in animals (rats) and humans were compared and some similarity of the spatial-frequency organization was revealed. The main difference consists in a greater activation of the left parieto-temporal area in humans, which is interpreted as a morphofunctional basis of verbalization of anxiogenic stimuli.

RESUMO

Cytological and pH-metrical investigations of the tracheobronchial aspirate were performed in 43 children with a respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) on artificial pulmonary ventilation. The content over 40% in the cytogram of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PNL) indicated infectious genesis and below 10%--noninfectious genesis of RDS. The content of PNL in the range of 11-39% requires additional clinical data which would help to establish RDS cause.

RESUMO

A rational nutrition is an important constituent of the management of preterm infants with severe cerebral conditions. The paper reviews indications for introducing total or partial parenteral nutrition (PN). Hyperalimentation is an appropriate choice within 10-12 postnatal days which should be later replaced by the "Scandinavian" regimen. The rate and duration of a daily PN regimen should be oriented to the time of glucose infusion. A protocol of partial and total PN is recommended for practical adoption.

RESUMO

Kidney function and some mechanisms of its regulation were studied in 161 premature babies. The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system was found to play a certain role in controlling the water-electrolyte balance in premature infants. The incidence of pronounced and latent renal failure in infants with posthypoxia lesions of the central nervous system (CNS) of varying degrees was demonstrated. The informative value of calculation parameters of partial kidney functions as the early diagnostic criteria in pronounced and latent renal failure is confirmed. A role that the revealed posthypoxia hypermyoglobinemia might possibly play in the pathogenesis of acute renal failure in premature infants is discussed.

RESUMO

The concentrations of aldosterone, vasopressin and plasma renin activity were measured in cord blood and on days 1, 3 and 5 of life in 71 newborn infants from the risk group at the development of critical conditions. Vasopressin was discovered to play a substantial role in the development of critical conditions. The lack of a considerable vasopressin ejection in response to a delivery trouble and the growth of its concentration by day 5 of life are prognostically unfavourable. Hyperactivity of the renin-aldosterone system determines the newborns' proneness to liquid and sodium retention.
