RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: University creates unique social environments for many young people that can result in behaviour changes that can impact sexual health-related risks and facilitate transmission of HIV. Little is known about HIV knowledge, risk, and awareness of pre-exposure prophylaxis/post-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP/PEP) among Australian university students. METHODS: A 2019 online survey distributed through Queensland universities, using active recruitment/snowball sampling. Descriptive and logistical regression analysis investigated HIV knowledge/risk and PrEP/PEP awareness. RESULTS: Of the 4,291 responses, 60.4% were 20-29 years old, 57.0% identified as heterosexual, and 31.8% were born-overseas. Mean HIV knowledge score was 9.8/12. HIV risk scores were higher among men-who-have-sex-with-men (MSM) (mean=5.2/40) compared to all other sexual behaviours (mean=3.1/40). Logistic regression indicated PrEP and PEP awareness was associated with older age (p<0.05), being non-binary/gender-diverse (p<0.05), and MSM (p<0.05). Lower odds of PrEP awareness were associated with international student status (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: This study highlights the need for future health promotion targeting younger Australians at risk of HIV to increase uptake of PrEP/PEP, particularly among overseas-born young people and those ineligible for appropriate health care in Australia. IMPLICATIONS FOR PUBLIC HEALTH: Addressing these gaps will improve sexual health outcomes for young Australians at risk of HIV and work towards virtual elimination of HIV transmission in Australia.

OBJECTIVES: Sexual health knowledge among international students in Australia is lower than domestic students, however, little is known about what factors affect the uptake of STI testing, nor if there are differences for overseas-born domestic students. METHODS: We included sexually active respondents from a survey of university students in Australia (N = 3,075). Multivariate regression and mediation analyses investigated associations of STI and HIV testing with STI and HIV knowledge respectively, sexual risk behaviour and demographics, including comparisons among: domestic Australian-born, domestic overseas-born, and international students. RESULTS: STI and HIV knowledge was positively associated with STI and HIV testing respectively (STI OR = 1.13, 95% CI: 1.09, 1.16; HIV OR = 1.37, 95% CI: 1.27, 1.48). STI knowledge was significantly lower for international than domestic Australian-born students (10.8 vs. 12.2 out of 16), as was STI testing (32% vs. 38%); the difference in knowledge accounted for half the difference in STI testing rates between these two groups. International students from Southern Asia, and Eastern Asia reported the lowest STI testing rates. HIV testing was highest amongst international students from Africa and North America. Higher sexual risk behaviour, younger age, and identifying as gay or bisexual were positively associated with higher STI and HIV testing rates. CONCLUSIONS: Our study supports greater investment and commitment by universities for the provision of sexual health education that can promote access to testing to improve the health of their students.

RESUMO

University students usually consist of young people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and a group recognised as being at increased risk of STI. This study found lower levels of STI knowledge and STI testing among international students and to a lesser extent, domestic overseas-born students, compared with domestic Australian-born students. International students exhibited lower risk sexual behaviour but were more likely to have had a HIV test than domestic students. This diversity in sexual health knowledge, sexual health services utilisation and sexual experience indicates the need for a variety of public health approaches to improve sexual health.

This study aims to evaluate the impact on the implementation of multiple strategies to improve medical student's pathology learning experience. In two consecutive years, medical students after a whole year of enrolling in pathology teaching, were invited to complete questionnaires rating and commenting on the personal learning experience of multiple teaching resources delivered in pathology. In both years, the overall score was high (mean score = 4.57 ± 0.63 /5) for the newly introduced sessions, namely histology lectures, clinical integrations and virtual microscopy pre-practical sessions. However, this was only marginally different from that of traditional practical (mean = 4.37 ± 0.68/5) and pathology lecture sessions (mean = 4.42 ± 0.61 /5). In addition, 53% positive correlation was noted for the overall responses between virtual microscopy guided pathology modules and practical sessions indicating the benefit of virtual microscopy in better preparing students for these sessions (P < 0.001). Qualitative comments suggested that the virtual microscopy sessions along with clinical scenario based learning were extremely useful for students' learning in pathology. To conclude, a multidisciplinary approach by clinical integration and flexibility in the mode of delivery by the use of virtual microscopy has the potential to better engage students to the learning of pathology.

The current study aims to evaluate for the first time the inhibitory roles of miR-205 in the pathogenesis of anaplastic thyroid carcinoma. In addition, we investigated the mechanisms by which miR-205 regulates angiogenesis and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in cancer. Two anaplastic thyroid carcinoma cell lines were transfected with the expression vector pCMV-MIR-205 Selected markers of angiogenesis and EMT including vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) and zinc finger E-box-binding homeobox 1 (ZEB1) were investigated by Western blot. The interaction of miR-205 expression with EMT and angiogenesis were also investigated by assessment of matrix metalloproteinases 2 and 9 (MMP2 and MMP 9), SNAI1 (Snai1 family zinc finger 1), vimentin, E-cadherin and N-cadherin. The function of miR-205 was further tested with VEGF enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), wound healing, invasion and tube formation assays. Using an animal model, we studied the association of miR-205 with angiogenesis, proliferation and invasion. The following results were obtained. Permanent overexpression of miR-205 significantly suppressed angiogenesis and EMT by simultaneously targeting VEGF-A, ZEB1 and downstream products. Ectopic expression of miR-205 in cancer cells led to decreased migration, invasion and tube formation of endothelial cells. In addition, inhibition of tumour growth, vascularisation and invasion were noted in the mouse tumour xenografts. Our findings provide insights into simultaneous regulatory role of miR-205 in the pathogenesis of anaplastic thyroid carcinoma by suppressing both angiogenesis and EMT. This may open avenues to exploit miR-205 as an alternative cancer therapeutic strategy in the future.

PURPOSE: This study aims to determine the expression of miR-34b-5p in thyroid carcinomas and to investigate the role of miR34b-5p in the modulation of proteins involved in angiogenesis of thyroid carcinoma cells. METHODS: The expressions of miR-34b-5p levels in five cell lines and 65 tissue samples from thyroid carcinomas were examined by real-time polymerase chain reaction. An exogenous miR-34b-5p (mimic) transiently overexpress miR-34b-5p in theses thyroid carcinoma cells. The effects of miR-34b-5p overexpression on the proteins involved in angiogenesis and cell cycle regulations (VEGF-A, Bcl-2 and Notch1) were investigated by Western blot, immunofluorescence, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay followed by cell cycle analysis and apoptosis assays. RESULTS: miR-34b-5p is markedly downregulated in all thyroid carcinoma cell lines and tissues samples when compared with non-neoplastic immortalised thyroid cell line and non-neoplastic thyroid tissues, respectively. The expression levels of miR-34b were significantly associated with T-stages of thyroid carcinomas (p = 0.042). Downregulation of VEGF-A, Bcl-2 and Notch1 proteins in thyroid carcinoma cells were noted in cells that transiently transfected with miR-34b-5p mimic. In addition, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay confirmed the decreased expression of VEGF in thyroid carcinoma cells after transfection with miR-34b-5p mimic. Furthermore, miR-34b-5p mimic transfection induces significant accumulation of cells in G0-G1 of the cell cycle by blocking of their entry into the S transitional phase as well as increasing the total apoptosis. CONCLUSIONS: miR-34b-5p functions as a potent regulator of angiogenesis, apoptosis and cell proliferation via modulation of VEGF-A, Bcl-2 and Notch1 proteins. It could be a target for developing treatment strategies of thyroid carcinoma with aggressive clinical behaviour.

Dental students require a basic ability to explain and apply general principles of pathology to systemic, dental, and oral pathology. Although there have been recent advances in electronic and online resources, the academic effectiveness of using self-directed e-learning tools in pathology courses for dental students is unclear. The aim of this study was to determine if blended learning combining e-learning with traditional learning methods of lectures and tutorials would improve students' scores and satisfaction over those who experienced traditional learning alone. Two consecutive cohorts of Bachelor of Dentistry and Oral Health students taking the general pathology course at Griffith University in Australia were compared. The control cohort experienced traditional methods only, while members of the study cohort were also offered self-directed learning materials including online resources and online microscopy classes. Final assessments for the course were used to compare the differences in effectiveness of the intervention, and students' satisfaction with the teaching format was evaluated using questionnaires. On the final course assessments, students in the study cohort had significantly higher scores than students in the control cohort (p<0.01). Analysis of questionnaire results showed improved student satisfaction with the course in the study cohort. These findings suggest that the use of e-learning tools such as virtual microscopy and interactive online resources for delivering pathology instruction can be an effective supplement for developing dental students' competence, confidence, and satisfaction.
