Oyster mushroom stem residue, a by-product with medicinal and nutritive values, might be a prospective feed supplement in poultry nutrition. The study focused on evaluating the impact of oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) stem residue (OMSR) powder supplementation on growth performance, carcass traits, meat quality, blood characteristics, and the cecal bacterial count in Arbor Acres broilers raised 35 d. A total of 144 day-old chicks, with an average weight of 40.27± 2.45 g, were divided into 3 groups: control (received a standard basal diet), antibiotic (basal diet + 75 mg/kg chlortetracycline), and OMSR (fed a basal diet with 300 mg/kg OMSR), where each group comprises 8 replications of 6 chicks. Supplementation of 300 mg/kg of OMSR powder in the broiler diet significantly (P < 0.05) enhanced the average daily gain (ADG) and final body weight as opposed to the control and antibiotic treatments, though the average daily feed intake was not influenced by OMSR supplementation during the whole experimental period. However, in comparison to the control and antibiotic groups, OMSR significantly reduced the postmortem breast meat drip loss percentage (P < 0.05) at 24 hours and on the seventh d. Furthermore, the OMSR group reported significantly elevated levels of Hb and RBC counts (P < 0.05), and decreased levels of serum triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol (TC) concentrations (P < 0.05) on d 35 in comparison to broilers in the control and antibiotic groups. Additionally, the OMSR group exhibited an improved Heterophil/Lymphocytes (H/L) ratio (P < 0.05) relative to the broilers of the control and antibiotic groups. In contrast, the inclusion of OMSR in the broiler diet did not significantly (P > 0.05) influence other serum biochemical and hematological values tested. Broilers in OMSR group had reduced number (P < 0.05) of E. coli and Salmonella spp., but higher presence of Lactobacillus spp. (P < 0.05) in contrast to the control broilers. To summarize, the study's findings revealed that 300 mg of OMSR powder supplementation per kg of basal diet could be act as a natural growth promoter, and confer favorable effects on health and meat quality of broilers.

Background Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal chronic disorder associated with symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, and constipation. One of the factors that could affect the pathogenesis of IBS is depression, a common psychological disorder that causes social and physical disability and affects productivity. A number of Saudi teachers were found to have depression, which was linked with multiple risk factors including chronic illnesses. However, there is limited data that exhibits the association between IBS and depression, specifically. Therefore, our study aims to determine the impact of depression on IBS-associated gastrointestinal symptoms in Makkah City schools, Saudi Arabia. Methods In this cross-sectional study, we used two validated scales and translated them into Arabic and then we distributed them to our targeted population. Our sample size was determined to be 383 but we succeeded in recruiting 477 participants in our study. Data were statistically analyzed using the statistical software Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), version 23.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). Results Generally, participants who demonstrated mild levels of Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) depression scale corresponded significantly with minimal/mild and moderate levels of Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale-IBS (GSRS-IBS) scores (n = 85 and 76, respectively; p ˂ 0.001), while participants who scored moderately on the PHQ-9 depression scale corresponded significantly with a severe level of GSRS-IBS scores (n = 29; p ˂ 0.001). Conclusion Our study found a significant association between different levels of depression and IBS among participants with a positive history of IBS. Further studies about the prevalence of IBS, depression, and the nature of their relationship are strongly recommended, in addition to the necessity of a suicide risk assessment for those with severe depression.

Background SARS­CoV­2 (COVID-19) causes olfactory dysfunction which is characterized by anosmia or hyposmia. Characterization of olfactory dysfunction has added value to the diagnosis and prognosis of the disease. Nevertheless, scarce information exists about COVID-19 patients suffering from olfactory dysfunction in Iraq. This study aimed to identify olfactory dysfunction (anosmia or hyposmia) in Iraqi COVID-19 patients and examine their response to smell exercise at Baghdad Medical City Complex, Baghdad, Iraq. Methodology This case series prospective study involving 300 patients (160 males and 140 females) with COVID-19 infection was conducted from June 1, 2020, to October 1, 2021. We recorded signs and symptoms of COVID-19 among patients by examining olfactory dysfunction, n-butanol olfaction test, and smell test exercise. Results Anosmia and hyposmia were found in 69.3% and 30.7% of the patients, respectively; of these, 65.7% were of sudden onset. The association between olfactory dysfunction and smoking was not significant. The most frequent signs and symptoms of COVID-19 were fatigue, fever, loss of taste, myalgia, headache, sore throat, cough, depressed appetite, dyspnea, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. The highest frequencies of occurrence of anosmia (30.7%) and hyposmia (13.3%) were in the age group of 31-40 years. The majority (47.7%) of patients with olfactory dysfunction recovered within one month of COVID-19 onset. The rest of the patients recovered within one month to 16 months. The most commonly encountered ear, nose, and throat symptoms were nasal obstruction, rhinorrhea, and facial/ear pain. The percentages of patients with anosmia and hyposmia recovering with smell exercise were significant at 64.7% and 25.3%, respectively. Conclusions The prognosis of olfactory dysfunction in COVID-19 patients was good as most cases recovered within a short period with concomitant smell exercise. Olfactory dysfunction in the majority of COVID-19 patients was self-limiting in young age groups, albeit in association with the non-severity of the disease. Being an important public health issue, examining olfactory dysfunction aspects should be considered in the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment protocols of COVID-19 patients. In-depth exploration is needed to examine olfactory and gustatory dysfunction in patients suffering from severe COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: HPVs are considered to have high-oncogenic risk. These genotypes have been proven to have a causal link to cancers, in pediatric and youth patients, with high rates of HPV presence in the tonsillar tissues. OBJECTIVE: A prospective case-control research for determining HPV 6/11 genotypes in tonsillar specimens of children who underwent operations in the otolaryngology departments of the Medical City Complex, Baghdad, Iraq, for their non-oncologic palatine and pharyngeal tonsillar hypertrophies. METHODS: This study enrolled 102 tonsillar tissues, 82 from pediatric patients aged from 4 to 12 years and who underwent tonsillectomies for non-oncologic palatine and pharyngeal tonsillar hypertrophies; 38 specimens were from single operations while 22 were multiple specimens from the same pediatric patients, represented as a total of 44 tissues). In addition, trimmed nasal tissues from 20 patients, with unremarkable pathological changes, were included as the control group. For HPV 6/11 DNA detection, specific DNA probes were used for the chromogenic in situ hybridization (CISH) technique. RESULTS: In the palatine tonsillar hypertrophied tissue group, 26.2% of the tissues revealed positive CISH signals for HPV 6/11 DNA. Regarding the pharyngeal tonsillar hypertrophied tissues, 22.5% of the specimens expressed positive CISH reactions. Among the 22 pediatric patients who had combined pharyngeal and palatine tonsillectomies, in 22.7% both sites expressed positive signals. No positive-CISH reactions were documented in the control nasal tissues. Statistically a significant difference was seen when compared to the control group. CONCLUSIONS: Significant rates of HPV were observed which pointed to the spread of HPV, among other STIs, and in mothers of at least this studied pediatric group. Also, this represented a critical mark as reservoir tissue sites, allowing transmission to other mucosal tissue localizations, playing part in their pathogenesis.

The preparation of poly (vinyl alcohol)/chitosan/ZnO (PVA/Cs/ZnO) nanocomposite films as bioactive nanocomposites was implemented through an environmentally friendly approach that included mixing, solution pouring, and solvent evaporation. The nanocomposite films were characterized using various techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The XRD study revealed the encapsulation of nanoparticles by the PVA/Cs blend matrix. The DSC results showed that the addition of ZnO NPs increased glass transition and melting temperature values of the PVA/Cs blend. ATR-FTIR spectra detected an irregular shift (either red or blue) in some of the characteristic bands of the PVA/Cs nanocomposite, indicating the existence of intra/intermolecular hydrogen bonding creating an interaction between the OH groups of PVA/Cs and ZnO nanoparticles. A thermogravimetric (TGA) analysis demonstrated that the nanocomposites achieved better thermal resistance than a pure PVA/Cs blend and its thermal stability was enhanced with increasing concentration of ZnO nanoparticles. UV analysis showed that with an increase in the content of ZnO NPs, the optical bandgap of PVA/Cs was decreased from 4.43 eV to 3.55 eV and linear and nonlinear parameters were enhanced. Our optical results suggest the use of PVA/Cs/ZnO nanocomposite films for various optoelectronics applications. PVA/Cs/ZnO nanocomposites exhibited significant antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It was found that nanocomposite samples were more effective against Gram-positive compared to Gram-negative bacteria.

Optimal dietary non-phytate phosphorus (NPP) is essential in poultry to maximise productive and reproductive performance, along with indices of egg and bone quality. This study aimed to establish the NPP requirements of egg-type duck breeders aged from 54 to 80 weeks on the following traits: egg production, egg incubation, egg quality, tibial characteristics, reproductive organ, plasma indices, and the expression of genes related to phosphorus absorption. Longyan duck breeders aged 54 weeks (n = 300) were randomly allotted to five treatments, each containing six replicates of 10 individually caged birds. Birds were fed corn-soybean meal-based diets containing 0.18, 0.25, 0.32, 0.38, and 0.45% NPP/kg for 27 weeks. The tested dietary NPP levels did not affect egg production or egg quality indices. The hatchling weight of ducklings increased (quadratic, P < 0.01) as dietary NPP level increased, and the highest value occurred with 0.25% NPP. The number of large yellow follicles (LYF), and the relative weights of LYF and ovary showed linear and quadratic responses to dietary NPP levels; the lowest number and relative weight of LYF occurred with 0.38% NPP, and the lowest ovarian weight was obtained with 0.25% NPP. There were no differences in tibial length, breaking strength, and mineral density in response to dietary NPP levels. In contrast, tibial content of Ca increased (linear, P < 0.01) with dietary NPP levels increasing from 0.18 to 0.45%, and the tibial content of P increased at 0.32% NPP and the higher dietary NPP levels. Plasma concentration of P showed a quadratic (P < 0.05) response to the dietary NPP levels, where the highest value was seen at 0.38% NPP. In conclusion, dietary NPP levels from 0.18 to 0.45% had no effects on egg production, and egg and tibial quality of duck breeders. The duck breeders fed a diet with 0.25% NPP showed the highest hatchling weight of their offspring, while those fed 0.38% NPP had the lowest number and relative weight of LYF. These results indicated that the diet with 0.25% NPP can be used in egg-type duck breeders to improve the hatchling weight of their offspring, without adverse effects on their productivity. The regression model indicated that the maximal hatchling weight of ducklings was obtained from duck breeders fed the diet with 0.30% NPP.

BACKGROUND: Hospital outbreaks caused by Burkholderia spp. have been linked to contamination of several medical solutions and products and are frequently associated with delayed detection and high mortality. AIM: To describe the management of two consecutive Burkholderia contaminans outbreaks caused by contaminated mouthwash of different brands during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of all patients involved in two outbreaks caused by B. contaminans detected in 2021 and 2022. The investigation was initiated after a cluster of positive respiratory specimens, followed by retrospective and prospective case-finding. FINDINGS: A total of 69 patients were affected, 47 in 2021 and 22 in 2022. The majority of affected patients had positive respiratory specimens (85.5%); 55.1% of cases had COVID-19, and 72.5% had multidrug-resistant organisms. Almost all (97.1%) patients required ventilation and 42.0% died. Seventeen percent of cases in the first outbreak were deemed to have been acquired by patient-to-patient transmission, whereas all of the cases in the second outbreak were infected directly from using mouthwash. The experience gained from the first outbreak and the formation of a multidisciplinary Infection Control Rapid Response Team resulted in more rapid recognition and control of the second outbreak. Multivariate analysis showed that older age, intensive care unit admission, and COVID-19 infection were independent predictors of mortality. CONCLUSION: Burkholderia outbreaks at the time of COVID-19 were associated with high mortality. Rapid detection and response by a dedicated experienced team (as in the second outbreak) can reduce mortality and prevent superimposed cross-transmission between patients.

PURPOSE: Small bowel obstruction (SBO) is a common surgical emergency. Previous studies have shown the value computed tomography (CT) scanning in both confirming this diagnosis and identifying indications for urgent surgical intervention, such as strangulated bowel or closed loop obstructions. However, most of the literature is based on retrospective expert review of previous imaging and little data regarding the real-time accuracy of CT reporting is available. Here, we investigated the real-world accuracy of CT reporting in patients admitted with SBO. METHODS: This was a multicentre prospective study including consecutive patients admitted with SBO. The primary outcomes were the sensitivity and specificity of CT scanning for bowel obstruction with ischaemia and closed loop obstruction. Data were retrieved from the original CT reports written by on-call radiologists and compared with operative findings. RESULTS: One hundred seventy-six patients were included, all of whom underwent CT scanning with intravenous contrast followed by operative management of SBO. Bowel obstruction with ischaemia was noted in 20 patients, with a sensitivity and specificity of CT scanning of 40.0% and 85.5%, respectively. Closed loop obstructions were noted in 26 patients, with a sensitivity and specificity of CT scanning of 23.1% and 98.0%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The real-world accuracy of CT scanning appears to be lower than previously reported in the literature. Strategies to address this could include the development of standardised reporting schemas and to increase the surgeon's own familiarity with relevant CT features in patients admitted with SBO.

With increasing reports of resistance to traditional insecticides, there is a need for innovative ways for mosquito control. RNAi is a sequence-specific molecular biology technique for gene silencing through degradation of mRNA and prevention of protein translation. Some genes are essential for insect life and their silencing can lead to insect morbidity and/or mortality. Searching for lethal genes in Culex quinquefasciatus, we found dynamin, ROP, HMGR and JHAMT to be lethal targets for RNAi in initial screening through larval soaking in dsRNA solution. Two delivery methods, chitosan nanoparticles and genetically modified yeast cells, were used in this study and proved effective in inducing high larval mortality and low adult emergence. Adult emergence after chitosan nanoparticles/dsRNA treatment was 12.67% ± 1.76 (HMGR), 17.33% ± 1.76 (dynamin), 18.67% ± 0.67 (ROP), and 35.33% ± 0.67 (JHAMT). Genetically modified yeast increased mortalities as adult emergence was 8.33% ± 1.67 (HMGR), 13.33% ± 3.33 (dynamin), and 10% ± 2.89 (JHAMT and ROP). Chitosan nanoparticles retained 75% of its biological activity whereas yeast cells retained >95% of their activities after 7 days of incubation in water. In conclusion, our results showed that these four genes are good targets for C. quinquefasciatus control using RNAi packaged in either chitosan nanoparticles or genetically modified yeast cells.

AIMS: The optimal management of small bowel obstruction (SBO) remains a matter of debate and treatment varies internationally. In Denmark, a more surgically aggressive strategy has traditionally been used, but to what extent patient outcomes differ from international reports is unknown. This study aimed to describe the current management and outcomes of patients admitted with SBO in Denmark. METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study conducted at six acute hospitals in Denmark over a 4-month period. Patients aged ≥ 18 years with a clinical or radiological diagnosis of SBO were eligible. Primary outcomes were 30 day morbidity and mortality rates. RESULTS: 316 patients were included during the study period. The median age was 72 years and 56% were female. Diagnosis was made by computed tomography (CT) in 313 patients (99.1%), with the remaining three diagnosed clinically. Non-operative management was the initial strategy in 152 patients (48.1%) and successful in 119 (78.3%). Urgent surgery was performed in the remaining 164 (51.9%), with a laparoscopic approach used in 84 patients (51.2%). The entire cohort had a 30 day mortality rate of 7.3% and a 30 day morbidity rate of 17.1%. CONCLUSIONS: The management of SBO in Denmark differs markedly to previous international reports, with an almost ubiquitous use of CT for diagnosis and a high proportion of patients undergoing urgent surgery. Despite higher rates of surgery, patient outcomes are broadly similar to reports of more conservative strategies, perhaps due to a reduction in delayed operations. Background Hip fracture is a major medical and surgical topic and is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Older women, especially those with osteoporosis, are at an increased risk for hip fractures. Multiple studies have shown the effect of osteoporosis on the refracture rate among the elderly population. Therefore, selecting a targeted population for screening and treating osteoporosis has an essential role in decreasing the hip fracture rate. This study aimed to determine the association between osteoporosis treatment and refracture rate among patients with hip fractures at King Abdulaziz Medical City, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Methods Collected data included patient demographics (men: ≥55 years old; women: ≥50 years old), the used osteoporosis investigation method, osteoporosis treatment history, presence of comorbidities, and refracture as a primary outcome. The refracture rate among patients with hip fracture was calculated and used to determine the association between hip refracture and osteoporosis. Results Our study included a total of 292 patients who presented to our hospital due to hip fractures. The patients were divided into two groups, the osteoporotic and non-osteoporotic groups. These groups were then compared. There was no statistical significance between osteoporosis and hip refracture (p = 0.721), and there was no association between the treatment of osteoporosis and hip refracture (p = 0.493). Statistical difference was found between patients who had undergone dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scan and were not treated for osteoporosis (p = 0.00). Lastly, the mortality of the refracture group was 10%, while it was 11% in the no-refracture group (p = 1.00). Conclusion Morbidity and mortality rates are higher among patients with hip fractures. Our study showed that there was no association between hip refracture rate and osteoporosis whether the patient is treated for osteoporosis or not. We recommend a systematic review that can include more studies in this field to acquire more definitive results regarding this topic.

Exposure to heat stress (HS) is one of the challenges facing the broiler industry worldwide. Various nutritional strategies have been suggested, such as altering dietary concentrations of some nutrients. Thus, we evaluated feeding different amino acid (AA) densities on live performance, Pectoralis (P.) muscles, and expression of selected AA transporters, water channels, and stress-related transcripts in a fast-growing broiler strain. Ross 308 chicks (n = 576) were randomly assigned to 4 dietary treatments (24 reps, 6 chicks per rep), differing in AA density (110, 100, 90, and 80% of a breeder's AA specifications). During 24 to 36 days of age, half of the birds were kept at a thermoneutral (TN) temperature of 20°C, whereas the other half were subjected to HS at 32° C for 8 h daily, making the treatment design a 4 × 2. The results revealed no interaction between housing temperature and AA density on growth performance or P. muscles weights. Feeding 80% AAs depressed BWG, FCR, and P. muscles at 36 d (P < 0.001). There was an interaction (P < 0.001) between AA density and temperature on the expression of all examined genes. Reducing the AA density beyond 100% upregulated the expression of AA transporter (CAT1, B0AT, b0,+AT, SNAT1, LAT1), HSP70, HSP90, glucocorticoid receptor (GR), and AQP3 in the TN birds' jejunum. Whereas in the HS birds, inconsistent expressions were observed in the jejunum, of which CAT1, B0AT, and LAT1 were markedly downregulated as AA density was reduced. In P. major of TN birds, reducing AA density resulted in upregulating the expression of all AA transporters, HSP70, GR, and AQP1, while downregulating HSP90 and AQP9. In contrast, AA reduction markedly downregulated CAT1, B0AT, and LAT1 in the P. major of HS birds. These findings indicate that the dietary AA level alters the expression of various genes involved in AA uptake, protein folding, and water transport. The magnitude of alteration is also dependent on the housing temperature. Furthermore, the results highlight the importance of adequate AA nutrition for fast-growing chickens under HS.

Culex quinquefasciatus, a member of the Culex pipiens complex, is widespread in Saudi Arabia and other parts of the world. It is a vector for lymphatic filariasis, Rift Valley fever, and West Nile virus. Studies have shown the deleterious effect of RNA interference (RNAi)-mediated knockdown of various lethal genes in model and agricultural pest insects. RNAi was proposed as a tool for mosquito control with a focus on Aedes aegypti and Anopheles gambiae. In this study, we examined the effect of RNAi of selected target genes on both larval mortality and adult emergence of Cx. quinquefasciatus through two delivery methods: soaking and nanoparticles. Ten candidate genes were selected for RNAi based on their known lethal effect in other insects. Disruption of three genes, chitin synthase-1, inhibitor of apoptosis 1, and vacuolar adenosine triphosphatase, resulted in the highest mortality among the selected genes using the two treatment methods. Silencing the other seven genes resulted in a medium to low mortality in both assays. These three genes are also active against a wide range of insects and could be used for RNAi-based mosquito control in the future.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, inflammatory, recurrent and debilitating skin disease of the hair follicle unit that typically develops after puberty. The disorder is characterized by comedones, painful inflammatory nodules, abscesses, dermal tunnels and scarring, with a predilection for intertriginous areas of the body (axillae, inguinal and anogenital regions). Recruitment of neutrophils to HS lesion sites may play an essential role in the development of the painful inflammatory nodules and abscesses that characterize the disease. This is a review of the major mediators involved in the recruitment of neutrophils to sites of active inflammation, including bacterial components (endotoxins, exotoxins, capsule fragments, etc.), the complement pathway anaphylatoxins C3a and C5a, tumour necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin (IL)-17, IL-8 (CXCL8), IL-36, IL-1, lipocalin-2, leukotriene B4, platelet-activating factor, kallikreins, matrix metalloproteinases, and myeloperoxidase inhibitors. Pharmacological manipulation of the various pathways involved in the process of neutrophil recruitment and activation could allow for successful control and stabilization of HS lesions and the remission of active, severe flares.

Mosquito-transmitted diseases pose a threat for a great portion of the world population. Chemical insecticides are the main tool for mosquito control. Heavy dependence on chemicals created several problems such as resistance development in many mosquito species, environmental effects, and human health issues. Other tools for mosquito control were developed and used in some parts of the world. Ribonucleic acid interference (RNAi) is a reverse genetic mechanism that was recently introduced as a new tool for pest control. Regarding mosquito, RNAi was used to study gene function and to discover genes that can be used as targets for control purposes. Several delivery methods are used to induce RNAi in mosquito larvae. Some methods such as injection and soaking are used routinely in RNAi research but have no application in the field. Other methods such as nanoparticles and microbes have some characteristics that make them good candidates for field application. In this report, we will focus on delivery methods for RNAi in mosquito larvae and will give examples for each method.

BACKGROUND: Mosquito-borne pathogens are important causes of diseases in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Knowledge of the mosquito fauna is needed for the appropriate control of the vectors that transmit the pathogens and prevent the diseases they cause. An important first step is to have an up-to-date list of the species known to be present in the country. Original occurrence records were obtained from published literature and critically scrutinized to compile a list of the mosquito species that occur within the borders of the Kingdom. RESULTS: Fifty-one species have been recorded in the Kingdom; however, the occurrence of two of these species is unlikely. Thus, the mosquito fauna of the Kingdom comprises 49 species that include 18 anophelines and 31 culicines. Published records are provided for each species. Problematic records based on misidentifications and inappropriate sources are discussed and annotated for clarity. CONCLUSION: Integrated morphological and molecular methods of identification are needed to refine the list of species and accurately document their distributions in the Kingdom.

Optimizing the dietary calcium (Ca) level is essential to maximize the eggshell quality, egg production and bone formation in poultry. This study aimed to establish the Ca requirements of egg-type duck breeders from 23 to 57 weeks of age on egg production, eggshell, incubation, tibial, plasma and ovary-related indices, as well as the expression of matrix protein-related genes. Totally, 450 Longyan duck breeders aged 21 weeks of age were allotted randomly into five treatments, each with six replicates of 15 individually caged birds. The data collection started from 23 weeks of age and continued over the following 35 weeks. The five groups corresponded to five dietary treatments containing either 2.8%, 3.2%, 3.6%, 4.0% or 4.4% Ca. The tested dietary Ca levels increased (linear, P <0.01) egg production and egg mass, and linearly improved (P <0.01) the feed conversion ratio (FCR). Increasing the dietary Ca levels from 2.8% to 4.4% increased (P <0.01) the eggshell thickness and eggshell content. The tested Ca levels showed a quadratic effect on eggshell thickness and ovarian weight (P <0.01); the highest values were obtained with the Ca levels 4.0% and 3.6%, respectively. Dietary Ca levels affected the small yellow follicles (SYF) number and SYF weight/ovarian weight, and the linear response (P <0.01) was significant vis-à-vis SYF number. In addition, dietary Ca levels increased (P <0.05) the tibial dry weight, breaking strength, mineral density and ash content. Plasma and tibial phosphorus concentration exhibited a quadratic (P <0.01) response to dietary Ca levels. Plasma calcitonin concentration linearly (P <0.01) increased as dietary Ca levels increased. The relative expression of carbonic anhydrase 2 in the uterus rose (P <0.01) with the increment of dietary Ca levels, and the highest value was obtained with 3.2% Ca. In conclusion, Longyan duck breeders fed a diet with 4.0% Ca had superior eggshell and tibial quality, while those fed a diet with 3.6% Ca had the heaviest ovarian weights. The regression model indicated that the dietary Ca levels 3.86%, 3.48% and 4.00% are optimal levels to obtain maximum eggshell thickness, ovarian weight and tibial mineral density, respectively.

Sodium and chloride are the key factors maintaining normal osmotic pressure (OSM) and volume of the extracellular fluid, and influencing the acid-base balance of body fluids. The experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary Na+ and Cl- level on growth performance, excreta moisture, blood biochemical parameters, intestinal Na+-glucose transporter 1 (SGLT1) messenger RNA (mRNA), and Na+-H+ exchanger 2 (NHE2) mRNA, and to estimate the optimal dietary sodium and chlorine level for yellow-feathered chickens from 22 to 42days. A total of 900 22-day-old Lingnan yellow-feathered male chickens were randomly allotted to five treatments, each of which included six replicates of 30 chickens per floor pen. The basal control diet was based on corn and soybean meal (without added NaCl and NaHCO3). Treatments 2 to 5 consisted of the basal diet supplemented with equal weights of Na+ and Cl-, constituting 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3% and 0.4% of the diets. Supplemental dietary Na+ and Cl- improved the growth performance (P<0.05). Average daily gain (ADG) showed a quadratic broken-line regression to increasing dietary Na+ and Cl- (R2=0.979, P<0.001), and reached a plateau at 0.1%. Supplemental Na+ and Cl- increased (P<0.05) serum Na+ and OSM in serum and showed a quadratic broken-line regression (R2=0.997, P=0.004) at 0.11%. However, supplemental Na+ and Cl- decreased (P<0.05) serum levels of K+, glucose (GLU) and triglyceride. Higher levels of Na+and Cl- decreased duodenal NHE2 transcripts (P<0.05), but had no effect on ileal SGLT1 transcripts. The activity of Na+ /K+-ATPase in the duodenum decreased (P<0.05) with higher levels of dietary Na+ and Cl-. In conclusion, the optimal dietary Na+ and Cl- requirements for yellow-feathered chickens in the grower phase, from 22 to 42 days of age, to optimize ADG, serum Na+, OSM, K+ and GLU were 0.10%, 0.11%, 0.11%,0.17% and 0.16%, respectively, by regression analysis.

This study evaluated the optimal concentrations of dietary ME and CP for the productivity, reproductive performance, and fat deposition in laying duck breeders aged from 29 to 45 wk. Using a 3 × 3 factorial arrangement of treatments, 648 Longyan laying duck breeders with similar BW were randomly assigned to experimental diets of 2,600 (HME = high ME), 2,500 (MME = medium ME), or 2,400 (LME = low ME) kcal of ME/kg, each containing 19% (HCP = high CP), 18% (MCP = medium CP), or 17% (LCP = low CP) CP. Each dietary treatment contained 6 replicates of 12 birds each. Compared with birds fed the LCP diet, the egg production and egg mass were higher in birds fed HCP and MCP (P < 0.01), with better feed conversion (P < 0.01). Interactions were detected between ME and CP levels in egg production, egg mass, and feed conversion ratio as the LMEMCP diet was the best (P < 0.05). The birds fed MME (P < 0.05) had the lowest abdominal fat. The percentage of healthy ducklings was affected by maternal dietary CP (P < 0.05) with the HCP being the highest. The weight of large yellow follicles/ovarian weight was higher in birds fed HCP and MCP (P < 0.05), whereas the weight of small yellow follicles/ovarian weight was higher in birds fed HCP and LCP (P < 0.05). The hepatic transcript abundances of genes for very low density apolipoprotein-II and carnitine palmitoyltransferase-1A (CPT-1A) were lowest in birds fed MCP, whereas the highest abundance of CPT-1A transcripts was found in birds fed MME. These results revealed that the diets containing ME of 12.9 kcal/g protein optimized both egg production and egg mass, while the feed conversion was optimized at 12.8 kcal ME/g protein. Using ME to CP ratio of 12.9 kcal/g protein, i.e., 2,451 kcal ME/kg at 19% CP, maximized the reproductive performance and hatchling outcome of Longyan laying duck breeders.

The effects of supplemental dietary threonine (Thr) on laying performance, expression of intestinal mucin 2 (MUC2) and secretory IgA (sIgA), and intestinal microbiota of laying hens fed a low CP diet were investigated. A total of 240 Lohmann Brown laying hens, 28 wk of age, was allocated to 3 dietary treatments, each of which included 5 replicates of 16 hens. Hens were fed a control diet (16% CP), a low CP diet (14% CP), or a low CP diet supplemented with 0.3% L-Thr for 12 weeks. Chemical analyses of the diets for Thr are 0.49, 0.45, and 0.69%, respectively. Lowering dietary CP impaired egg production and egg mass of laying hens. Dietary Thr supplementation to the low CP diet increased (P < 0.05) egg production and egg mass. In addition, ileal sIgA contents and MUC2 and sIgA mRNA expression were increased (P < 0.05) by dietary Thr addition. Dietary CP reduction reduced (P < 0.05) intestinal bacterial diversity, whereas dietary Thr supplementation to the low CP diet recovered the bacteria diversity and significantly increased the abundance of potential beneficial bacteria. In conclusion, dietary Thr supplementation to a low CP diet could affect intestinal health and hence productivity via regulating intestinal mucin and sIgA expression, and microbial population of laying hens.
