RESUMO

Positive body image (PBI) has received attention in the recent research literature. Despite this, its role in daily functioning in different cultural contexts, particularly its potential relationship with academic outcomes, is still lacking. This study aimed to offer an international perspective on the association between PBI and body mass index (BMI), perceived academic achievement, and educational aspirations, as well as the mediating role of self-esteem. A cross-national study was conducted in eight European countries with a total of 2653 female university students. Participants completed an online survey measuring PBI (conceptualized as body appreciation), self-esteem, perceived academic achievement and aspirations, and body mass index (BMI). Results revealed differences in PBI between countries (low magnitude). PBI correlated negatively with BMI in all national groups (low-to-moderate magnitude). Mediation analysis showed that self-esteem mediated the association between PBI and academic variables. Findings from this study suggest that building students' self-esteem and PBI can be a suitable way to boost academic success.

BACKGROUND: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 pandemic is affecting public health systems and mental health significantly. Patients with inflammatory bowel disease are witnessing vigorous organizational changes in inflammatory bowel disease centers and experiencing all psychosocial effects of the crisis. We conducted a single-center cross-sectional study in order to assess inflammatory bowel disease patients' concerns, behavior, and satisfaction with provided healthcare during severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 pandemic. METHODS: All inflammatory bowel disease patients treated in our center from April 1 to June 1, 2020, were invited to fulfill an anonymous online questionnaire. RESULTS: A total of 132 participants have completed the questionnaire, 63.2% were female, 57.9% had Crohn's disease (CD) During the first wave of the pandemic, 74.2% of participants perceived themselves as a high-risk group for acquiring coronavirus disease 2019 only because they suffered from inflammatory bowel disease, and 66.2% thought inflammatory bowel disease medications make them more susceptible to coronavirus disease 2019. This especially concerned patients treated with biologics (B = 2.068, P < .01). Females were more stressed (B = -1.451, P < .01) and concerned (B = -1.488, P < .01) about the pandemic, and they also reported more potential benefits from professional psychological help (B = -2.664, P = .02). Six patients (5.3%) discontinued inflammatory bowel disease therapy on their own initiative. Seventy-eight (68.4%) patients were completely satisfied and 14 (12.3%) were partially satisfied with the quality of healthcare provided in our inflammatory bowel disease center. CONCLUSION: Female inflammatory bowel disease patients tend to be more emotionally vulnerable during severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 pandemic. Although psychological support should be continuously available to all inflammatory bowel disease patients, female gender may warrant special attention. Providing patients with adequate and early information during pandemic probably leads to better compliance and higher satisfaction.

The HEXACO Personality Inventory-Revised (HEXACO-PI-R) has become one of the most heavily applied measurement tools for the assessment of basic personality traits. Correspondingly, the inventory has been translated to many languages for use in cross-cultural research. However, formal tests examining whether the different language versions of the HEXACO-PI-R provide equivalent measures of the 6 personality dimensions are missing. We provide a large-scale test of measurement invariance of the 100-item version of the HEXACO-PI-R across 16 languages spoken in European and Asian countries (N = 30,484). Multigroup exploratory structural equation modeling and confirmatory factor analyses revealed consistent support for configural and metric invariance, thus implying that the factor structure of the HEXACO dimensions as well as the meaning of the latent HEXACO factors is comparable across languages. However, analyses did not show overall support for scalar invariance; that is, equivalence of facet intercepts. A complementary alignment analysis supported this pattern, but also revealed substantial heterogeneity in the level of (non)invariance across facets and factors. Overall, results imply that the HEXACO-PI-R provides largely comparable measurement of the HEXACO dimensions, although the lack of scalar invariance highlights the necessity for future research clarifying the interpretation of mean-level trait differences across countries.

BACKGROUND: Compulsory school entrance age and admission policies differ across countries and educational systems, and there is a continuing debate on the question whether and how the age at school entry affects various student outcomes. AIMS: This study explored the relation between school entrance age and school achievement among students attending fourth (ages 10-11) and eighth (ages 14-15) grade of Croatian primary schools. SAMPLE: Participants were 44,479 fourth- and 43,338 eighth-grade students from all Croatian primary schools. Students were divided into groups of younger and older school entrants based on the difference between the year of birth and the year of school entry. METHODS: Differences in school achievement between students who were younger and those who were older when they entered school in subjects covered by the curriculum for respective grades were examined among fourth- and eighth-grade students. Two achievement measures were used for each subject-objective test results obtained during a national examination and final school marks appointed by teachers. RESULTS: Among fourth-grade students, older school entrants on average performed slightly better than the younger ones in all the subjects, irrespective of the achievement measure used. However, these differences in achievement are very small, and the effect of school entrance age on achievement is very weak. In the eighth-grade sample, younger and older school entrants did not differ in their achievement in the majority of subjects. CONCLUSIONS: Students who are older when they enter school perform slightly better than their older classmates in the lower grades of primary school, but these differences in achievement are very small and are probably no longer present by the end of primary schooling.
