BACKGROUND: The extent to which educational attainment (EA) influences the risk of varicose veins (VVs), venous thromboembolism (VTE), and phlebitis occurrence, whether this pathway is mediated by obesity-related traits, and the proportion of their mediation is unknown. METHODS: A Mendelian randomization (MR) design was used to genetically investigate the causal effects of EA on the risk of VV, VTE, and phlebitis and to assess the mediating effect of obesity-related traits. Causal effects were estimated using primarily the multiplicative random-effects inverse variance-weighted method. This was supplemented by Cochran's Q-statistic, MR-Egger regression, MR funnel plots, and leave-one-out test to evaluate the reliability of the results. For the individual mediation effect, the coefficient product method was mainly utilized to estimate. RESULTS: An increase in genetically predicted EA was associated with a lower risk of VV, VTE, and phlebitis, as well as lower body mass index, basal metabolic rate, hip circumference, and waist circumference. As genetically predicted body mass index, basal metabolic rate, hip circumference, and waist circumference increased, the risk of developing VV, VTE, and phlebitis increased, respectively. Body mass index, basal metabolic rate, hip circumference, and waist circumference were identified as mediators of the protective effects of EA on VV, VTE, and phlebitis. CONCLUSION: The findings support a causal relationship between higher EA and lower risk of VV, VTE, and phlebitis. Obesity-related traits play a significant mediating role in these pathways, and there are interactions between them, with hip circumference mediating these pathways relatively independently from the other three.

Autotrophic denitrification utilizing iron sulfides as electron donors has been well studied, but the occurrence and mechanism of abiotic nitrate (NO3-) chemodenitrification by iron sulfides have not yet been thoroughly investigated. In this study, NO3- chemodenitrification by three types of iron sulfides (FeS, FeS2, and pyrrhotite) at pH 6.37 and ambient temperature of 30 °C was investigated. FeS chemically reduced NO3- to ammonium (NH4+), with a high reduction efficiency of 97.5% and NH4+ formation selectivity of 82.6%, but FeS2 and pyrrhotite did not reduce NO3- abiotically. Electrochemical Tafel characterization confirmed that the electron release rate from FeS was higher than that from FeS2 and pyrrhotite. Quenching experiments and density functional theory calculations further elucidated the heterogeneous chemodenitrification mechanism of NO3- by FeS. Fe(II) on the FeS surface was the primary site for NO3- reduction. FeS possessing sulfur vacancies can selectively adsorb oxygen atoms from NO3- and water molecules and promote water dissociation to form adsorbed hydrogen, thereby forming NH4+. Collectively, these findings suggest that the NO3- chemodenitrification by iron sulfides cannot be ignored, which has great implications for the nitrogen, sulfur, and iron cycles in soil and water ecosystems.

Background: The FXYD domain-containing ion transport regulator 5 (FXYD5) gene is a cancer promoter. However, evidence for an association between FXYD5 and various types of cancer is still lacking. Using multi-omics bioinformatics, our study aimed to reveal the expression distribution, prognostic value, immune infiltration correlation, and molecular functions of FXYD5. Methods: Using pan-cancer multi-omics data (including The Cancer Genome Atlas, PrognoScan, Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis, cBioPortal, Gene Expression Omnibus, TIMER and scTIME Portal), we assessed the differences in the expression and prognostic value of FXYD5 in malignant tumors. Furthermore, at the single-cell level, we analyze the expression distribution of FXYD5 across different cell types within the tumor microenvironment, and its relationship with the immune microenvironment. Finally, focusing on ovarian cancer, we conducted preliminary validation of the above findings using cell and molecular biology techniques. Results: Our results indicated that FXYD5 was up-regulated in various tumor types and was positively associated with tumor progression. We also revealed that FXYD5 was ubiquitously expressed in microenvironmental cells at the single-cell level, and its upregulation was associated with enhanced immune infiltration, cancer-associated fibroblast infiltration, and dysfunction of tumor-infiltrating cytotoxic T lymphocyte. Additionally, its expression was positively correlated with immune checkpoint genes, DNA mismatch repair genes, MSI (microsatellite instability) and TMB (tumor mutational burden) across various cancers. Its higher expression in cytotoxic T lymphocytes attenuated its ability to predict patient survival with PD-L1 (programmed death-ligand 1) blockade therapy, and FXYD5 was found to be a potential regulator of tumor immune escape and resistance to cancer immunotherapies. Based on GSEA (gene set enrichment analysis) and experimental verification, FXYD5 activated TGF-ß/SMAD signaling and drove EMT (epithelial-mesenchymal transition) to promote ovarian cancer progression. Conclusion: In summary, our study revealed that FXYD5-TGFß axis may coregulate the interaction between tumors, CAFs (carcinoma-associated fibroblasts) and immune cells to reshape the tumor immune microenvironment and promote tumorigenesis and tumor progression. Thus, FXYD5 could be used as an immune-related biomarker for diagnosing and predicting the prognosis of multiple cancer types. Therefore, our findings suggest that targeting FXYD5 in TME (tumor microenvironment) may be a promising therapeutic strategy.

Bone cancer pain (BCP), due to cancer bone metastasis and bone destruction, is a common symptom of tumors, including breast, prostate, and lung tumors. Patients often experience severe pain without effective treatment. Here, using a mouse model of bone cancer, we report that MOTS-c, a novel mitochondrial-derived peptide, confers remarkable protection against cancer pain and bone destruction. Briefly, we find that the plasma level of endogenous MOTS-c is significantly lower in the BCP group than in the sham group. Accordingly, intraperitoneal administration of MOTS-c robustly attenuates bone cancer-induced pain. These effects are blocked by compound C, an AMPK inhibitor. Furthermore, MOTS-c treatment significantly enhances AMPKα 1/2 phosphorylation. Interestingly, mechanical studies indicate that at the spinal cord level, MOTS-c relieves pain by restoring mitochondrial biogenesis, suppressing microglial activation, and decreasing the production of inflammatory factors, which directly contribute to neuronal modulation. However, in the periphery, MOTS-c protects against local bone destruction by modulating osteoclast and immune cell function in the tumor microenvironment, providing long-term relief from cancer pain. Additionally, we find that chronic administration of MOTS-c has little effect on liver, renal, lipid or cardiac function in mice. In conclusion, MOTS-c improves BCP through peripheral and central synergistic effects on nociceptors, immune cells, and osteoclasts, providing a pharmacological and biological rationale for the development of mitochondrial peptide-based therapeutic agents for cancer-induced pain.

Tracking carboxylesterases (CESs) through noninvasive and dynamic imaging is of great significance for diagnosing and treating CES-related metabolic diseases. Herein, three BODIPY-based fluorescent probes with a pyridine unit quaternarized via an acetoxybenzyl group were designed and synthesized to detect CESs based on the photoinduced electron transfer process. Notably, among these probes, BDPN2-CES exhibited a remarkable 182-fold fluorescence enhancement for CESs within 10 min. Moreover, BDPN2-CES successfully enabled real-time imaging of endogenous CES variations in living cells. Using BDPN2-CES, a visual high-throughput screening method for CES inhibitors was established, culminating in the discovery of an efficient inhibitor, WZU-13, sourced from a chemical library. These findings suggest that BDPN2-CES could provide a new avenue for diagnosing CES-related diseases, and WZU-13 emerges as a promising therapeutic candidate for CES-overexpression pathological processes.

Prunus zhengheensis, an extremely rare population of apricots, originated in warm South-East China and is an excellent material for genetic breeding. However, most apricots and two related species (P. sibirica, P. mandshurica) are found in the cold northern regions in China and the mechanism of their distribution is still unclear. In addition, the classification status of P. zhengheensis is controversial. Thus, we generated a high-quality haplotype-resolved genome for P. zhengheensis, exploring key genetic variations in its adaptation and the causes of phylogenetic incongruence. We found extensive phylogenetic discordances between the nuclear and organelle phylogenies of P. zhengheensis, which could be explained by incomplete lineage sorting. A 242.22-Mb pan-genome of the Armeniaca section was developed with 13 chromosomal genomes. Importantly, we identified a 566-bp insertion in the promoter of the HSFA1d gene in apricot and showed that the activity of the HSFA1d promoter increased under low temperatures. In addition, HSFA1d overexpression in Arabidopsis thaliana indicated that HSFA1d positively regulated plant growth under chilling. Therefore, we hypothesized that the insertion in the promoter of HSFA1d in apricot improved its low-temperature adaptation, allowing it to thrive in relatively cold locations. The findings help explain the weather adaptability of Armeniaca plants.

Objective: To explore the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) toward glioma of patients with neurological symptoms or diseases. Methods: This web-based cross-sectional study was conducted at two medical centers in Henan Province between January 2023 and April 2023 and enrolled patients with neurological symptoms or diseases. The demographic characteristics of the participants and their KAP toward glioma were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. A structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to examine the relationship among KAP dimensions. Results: The study included 442 valid questionnaires. The mean knowledge, attitude, and practice scores were 7.65 ± 1.62 (possible range: 0-9), 37.98 ± 3.17 (possible range: 9-45), and 40.16 ± 4.17 (possible range: 10-50), indicating good knowledge, favorable attitude, and active practice. The SEM analysis showed that knowledge directly affected attitudes (ß = 0.89, 95%CI: 0.73-1.06, P < 0.001) but not practice (ß = -0.08, 95%CI: -0.32-0.14, P = 0.487), while attitudes directly affected practice (ß = 0.35, 95%CI: 0.21-0.48, P < 0.001). Conclusion: Patients with neurological symptoms/diseases who had heard of gliomas had good knowledge, favorable attitudes, and active practice toward glioma. Specific knowledge items that would warrant improvements were identified in the specific population of patients with neurological symptoms/diseases who had heard of glioma. Future studies should also examine the general population.

Background: Hyperuricemia (HUA) is a prevalent metabolic disorder whose development is associated with intestinal microbiota. Therefore, probiotics have emerged as a potential and safe approach for lowering uric acid (UA) levels. However, the underlying mechanisms of many effective probiotic strains remain unknown. Methods and results: C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into two groups: control and model groups. The model group received 12 weeks of potassium oxonate. Through 16s sequencing we found that HUA resulted in a significant decrease in the total diversity of all intestinal segments. When each intestinal segment was analyzed individually, the reduction in diversity was only significant in the cecum and colon sections. RDA analysis showed that lactobacilli in the rat colon exhibited a strong correlation with model group, suggesting that Lactobacillus may play an important role in HUA. Consequently, the preventive effects of Lactobacillus johnsonii YH1136 against HUA were investigated. C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into three groups: control, model and YH1136 groups. The results showed that administering Lactobacillus johnsonii YH1136 effectively reduced serum UA levels in vivo by inhibiting hepatic xanthine oxidase (XOD) activity and promoting renal ABCG2 transporter expression. Moreover, supplementation with Lactobacillus johnsonii YH1136 significantly ameliorated pathological damage in the kidney and liver, thereby reducing UA accumulation. Conclusion: Hyperuricemia is accompanied by an altered composition of multiple gut bacteria, of which Lactobacillus is a key genus. Lactobacillus johnsonii YH1136 may ameliorate renal involvement in HUA via the gut-kidney axis.

Despite rapid advancements in the photovoltaic efficiencies of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), their operational stability remains a significant challenge for commercialization. This instability mainly arises from light-induced halide ion migration and subsequent oxidation into iodine (I2). The situation is exacerbated when considering the heat effects at elevated temperatures, leading to the volatilization of I2 and resulting in irreversible device degradation. Mercaptoethylammonium iodide (ESAI) is thus incorporated into perovskite as an additive to inhibit the oxidation of iodide anion (I-) and  the light-induced degradation pathway of FAPbI3→FAI+PbI2. Additionally, the formation of a thiol-disulfide/I--I2 redox pair within the perovskite film provides a dynamic mechanism for the continuous reduction of I2 under light and thermal stresses, facilitating the healing of iodine-induced degradations. This approach significantly enhances the operational stability of PSCs. Under the ISOS-L-3 testing protocol (maximum power point (MPP) tracking in an environment with relative humidity of ≈50% at ≈65 °C), the treated PSCs maintain 97% of their original power conversion efficieney (PCE) after 300 h of aging. In contrast, control devices exhibit almost complete degradation, primarily due to rapid thermal-induced I2 volatilization. These results demonstrate a promising strategy to overcome critical stability challenges in PSCs, particularly in scenarios involving thermal effects.

Objectives: Neuroinflammation is considered an important step in the progression of secondary brain injury (SBI) induced by cerebral hemorrhage (ICH). The nucleotide-binding and oligomerization structural domain-like receptor family of pyridine structural domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasomes play an important role in the immune pathophysiology of SBI. Febuxostat (Feb) is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor that is approved for the treatment of gout and has been found to have potent anti-inflammatory effects. However, it has been less studied after ICH and we aimed to explore its protective role in ICH. Materials and Methods: We established an autologous blood-brain hemorrhage model in C57BL/6 mice. Functions of co-expressed genes were analyzed by trend analysis and bioinformatics analysis. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay were used to assess the inflammatory factor levels. Fluoro-Jade B histochemistry and TUNEL staining were used to detect neuronal apoptosis. Immunofluorescence staining and western blotting were used to detect the expression of NLRP3 inflammasomes. Results: Pretreatment with Feb reduced neuronal cell death and degeneration and alleviated neurobehavioral disorders in vivo. Feb was found to modulate inflammation-related pathways by trend analysis and bioinformatics analysis. In addition, Feb inhibited microglia activation and elevated cytokine levels after ICH. Furthermore, double immunofluorescence staining showed that co-localization of NLRP3 with Iba1 positive cells was reduced after treatment with Feb. Finally, we found that Feb inhibited the activation of the NLRP3/ASC/caspase-1 pathway after ICH. Conclusion: By inhibiting the NLRP3 inflammasome, preconditioning Feb attenuates inflammatory injury after ICH. Our findings may provide new insights into the role of Feb in neuroprotection.

BACKGROUND: Non-invasive brain stimulation is considered as a promising technology for treating patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC). Various approaches and protocols have been proposed; however, few of them have shown potential effects on patients with vegetative state (VS). This study aimed to explore the neuro-modulation effects of intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) on the brains of patients with VS and to provide a pilot investigation into its possible role in treating such patients. METHODS: We conducted a sham-controlled crossover study, a real and a sham session of iTBS were delivered over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex of such patients. A measurement of an electroencephalography (EEG) and a behavioral assessment of the Coma Recovery Scale-Revised (CRS-R) were applied to evaluate the modulation effects of iTBS before and after stimulation. RESULTS: No meaningful changes of CRS-R were found. The iTBS altered the spectrum, complexity and functional connectivity of the patients. The real stimulation induced a trend of decreasing of delta power at T1 and T2 in the frontal region, significant increasing of permutation entropy at the T2 in the left frontal region. In addition, brain functional connectivity, particularly inter-hemispheric connectivity, was strengthened between the electrodes of the frontal region. The sham stimulation, however, did not induce any significant changes of the brain activity. CONCLUSIONS: One session of iTBS significantly altered the oscillation power, complexity and functional connectivity of brain activity of VS patients. It may be a valuable tool on modulating the brain activities of patients with VS.

The rapid urbanization are serious threats to global sustainable development, making the green transformation of socio-economy and industry a must for global efforts. The theory of ecological and economic harmonization in ecological economics has gained attention. However the Two Mountains concept, i.e., "Lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets", has been mostly neglected as a practical demonstration of the theory. In this study an equal weights method is used to construct an index system for testing the effectiveness of the ongoing practices and demonstrations of the Two Mountains concept, and whether it can achieve the expected green transformation objectives. A total of 421 pilot cases and 208 surrounding non-pilot cases in China from 2010 to 2020 are selected for analysis. The results indicate that: (1) From 2010 to 2020, overall 98.33% of pilots show positive improvement in comprehensive effectiveness; (2) Strong evidence indicate that the positive externality of the demonstrations extends to their surrounding region, mainly manifested in the impact of industrial structure change, inspiring collaboration between cities; (3) Such ambitious green transformation has a significant impact on landscape characteristics, which emphasizes the role of landscape management and monitoring. Therefore, this study proposes an industrial integration framework to enhance the transformation of ecosystem service values, to facilitate transition to a green economy in various regions globally. It provides significant managerial insights and practical expertise. The demonstration of China's Two Mountains concept can offer reliable empirical cases to enrich the theory of ecological economics and global sustainable development.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Aging poses a significant challenge worldwide, with China's aging status becoming particularly severe. What is the impact of Internet use on the health of the elderly? Existing studies have drawn conflicting conclusions that Internet use improves or harms health. The purpose of this study was to explore how Internet use affects the health of older adults, and the mechanisms and heterogeneity of these effects. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Based on Grossman's theory, this paper constructs a health production function model. Using the data of China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) from 2014 to 2020, we investigated the impact of Internet use on the health of older adults using fixed effect model and instrumental variable method. We also examined the mediating role of health information acquisition, lifestyle, and social interaction in these associations. RESULTS: Internet use is positively associated with self-rated health and negatively associated with psychological sub-health level. Internet use promotes the health of older adults by facilitating access to health information, healthy lifestyles, and enhancing social interaction. And the impacts are heterogeneous at the individual and regional levels. DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATIONS: We should progressively enhance the level of internet accessibility for older adults, while concurrently addressing and narrowing the 'digital divide'. By generating an abundance of superior health-related information, we can significantly improve health education tailored for the elderly. Additionally, it is crucial to offer extensive training opportunities designed to equip older adults with the necessary skills to proficiently navigate the internet.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and its resulting complications pose a major challenge to global public health, resulting in increased rates of disability and mortality. Cerebrovascular dysfunction is nearly universal in TBI cases and is closely associated with secondary injury after TBI. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) shows great potential in the treatment of TBI; however, the exact mechanism remains elusive. In this study, we performed in vivo and in vitro experiments to explore the effects and mechanisms of tDCS in a controlled cortical impact (CCI) rat model simulating TBI. In vivo experiments show that tDCS can effectively reduce brain tissue damage, cerebral edema and neurological deficits. The potential mechanism may be that tDCS improves the neurological function of rats by increasing orexin A (OXA) secretion, upregulating the TF-AKT/ERK signaling pathway, and promoting angiogenesis at the injury site. Cellular experiments showed that OXA promoted HUVEC migration and angiogenesis, and these effects were counteracted by the ERK1/2 inhibitor LY3214996. The results of Matrigel experiment in vivo showed that TNF-a significantly reduced the ability of HUVEC to form blood vessels, but OXA could rescue the effect of TNF-a on the ability of HUVEC to form blood vessels. However, LY3214996 could inhibit the therapeutic effect of OXA. In summary, our preliminary study demonstrates that tDCS can induce angiogenesis through the OXA-TF-AKT/ERK signaling pathway, thereby improving neurological function in rats with TBI.

Enzyme-based biosensors commonly utilize the drop-casting method for their surface modification. However, the drawbacks of this technique, such as low reproducibility, coffee ring effects, and challenges in mass production, hinder its application. To overcome these limitations, we propose a novel surface functionalization strategy of enzyme crosslinking via inkjet printing for reagentless enzyme-based biosensors. This method includes printing three functional layers onto a screen-printed electrode: the enzyme layer, crosslinking layer, and protective layer. Nanomaterials and substrates are preloaded together during our inkjet printing. Inkjet-printed electrodes feature a uniform enzyme deposition, ensuring high reproducibility and superior electrochemical performance compared to traditional drop-casted ones. The resultant biosensors display high sensitivity, as well as a broad linear response in the physiological range of the serum phosphate. This enzyme crosslinking method has the potential to extend into various enzyme-based biosensors through altering functional layer components.

The sudden outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in early 2020 posed a massive threat to human life and caused an economic upheaval worldwide. Kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) became susceptible to infection during the COVID-19 pandemic owing to their use of immunosuppressants, resulting in increased hospitalization and mortality rates. Although the current epidemic situation is alleviated, the long-term existence of COVID-19 still seriously threatens the life and health of KTRs with low immunity. The Omicron variant, a highly infectious but less-pathogenic strain of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has raised concerns among transplant physicians regarding managing KTRs diagnosed with this variant. However, currently, there are no clear and unified guidelines for caring for KTRs infected with this variant. Therefore, we aimed to summarize the ongoing research on drugs that can treat Omicron variant infections in KTRs and explore the potential of adjusting immunotherapy strategies to enhance their responsiveness to vaccines. Herein, we discuss the situation of KTRs since the emergence of COVID-19 and focus on various prevention and treatment strategies for KTRs since the Omicron variant outbreak. We hope to assist physicians in managing KTRs in the presence of long-term COVID-19 variants.

BACKGROUND: The complexity of the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying human consciousness is widely acknowledged, with information processing and flow originating in cortex conceived as a core mechanism of consciousness emergence. Combination of transcranial magnetic stimulation and electroencephalography (TMS-EEG) is considered as a promising technique to understand the effective information flow associated with consciousness. OBJECTIVES: To investigate information flow with TMS-EEG and its relationship to different consciousness states. METHODS: We applied an effective information flow analysis by combining time-varying multivariate adaptive autoregressive model and adaptive directed transfer function on TMS-EEG data of frontal, motor and parietal cortex in patients with disorder of consciousness (DOC), including 14 vegetative state/unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (VS/UWS) patients, 21 minimally conscious state (MCS) patients, and 22 healthy subjects. RESULTS: TMS in DOC patients, particularly VS/UWS, induced a significantly weaker effective information flow compared to healthy subjects. The bidirectional directed information flow was lost in DOC patients with TMS of frontal, motor and parietal cortex. The interactive ROI rate of the information flow network induced by TMS of frontal and parietal cortex was significantly lower in VS/UWS than in MCS. The interactive ROI rate correlated with DOC clinical scales. CONCLUSIONS: TMS-EEG revealed a physiologically relevant correlation between TMS-induced information flow and levels of consciousness. This suggests that breakdown of effective cortical information flow serves as a viable marker of human consciousness. SIGNIFICANCE: Findings offer a unique perspective on the relevance of information flow in DOC, thus providing a novel way of understanding the physiological basis of human consciousness.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the microcirculatory characteristics of the dome-shaped macula (DSM), its complications in highly myopic eyes and to explore the factors associated with a DSM. METHODS: This cross-sectional case-control study included a total of 98 subjects (98 eyes): 49 eyes with DSM and 49 eyes without DSM. The axial length (AL) of the myopic eyes was matched 1:1 to eliminate the effect of AL differences on the results. Choroidal (CT) and scleral thickness (ST) and other structural parameters were assessed by swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). OCT angiography was used to measure microcirculatory parameters in highly myopic eyes. RESULTS: Subjects with DSM had thinner subfoveal choroidal thickness (46.01 ± 13.25 vs. 81.62 ± 48.26 µm; p < 0.001), thicker subfoveal scleral thickness (SFST; 331.93 ± 79.87 vs. 238.74 ± 70.96 µm; p < 0.001) and thinner foveal CT (66.86 ± 24.65 vs. 107.85 ± 52.65 µm; p < 0.001) compared to subjects without DSM. The foveal choroidal perfusion area (0.72 ± 0.04 vs. 0.76 ± 0.04 mm2; p < 0.001) and foveal choroidal vascularity index (0.15 ± 0.04 vs. 0.33 ± 0.14; p < 0.001) were significantly lower in eyes with DSM. Retinoschisis (81.6% vs. 38.8%; p < 0.001) was more common in eyes with DSM. Eyes with horizontal DSM had worse best-corrected logMAR visual acuity than eyes with round DSM (0.34 ± 0.22 vs. 0.23 ± 0.22; p = 0.03). DSM height (98.95 ± 65.17 vs. 104.63 ± 44.62 µm; p = 0.05) was lower in the horizontal DSM. SFST (OR = 1.06, p = 0.04) and foveal choroidal vascularity index (OR = 0.711, p = 0.02) were significantly associated with DSM. DSM width (p < 0.001), foveal choroidal perfusion area (p = 0.01), foveal choriocapillaris perfusion area (p = 0.02) and parafoveal choroidal vascularity index (p = 0.03) were the most significantly associated factors with DSM height. CONCLUSIONS: The microcirculatory characteristics of eyes with DSM differed from those without DSM. Microcirculatory abnormalities were significantly associated with a DSM. The height of the DSM was associated with decreased blood perfusion.

Mitochondria are important organelles that provide energy for cellular physiological activities. Changes in their structures may indicate the occurrence of diseases, and the super-resolution imaging of mitochondria is of great significance. However, developing fluorescent probes for mitochondrial super-resolution visualization still remains challenging due to insufficient fluorescence brightness and poor stability. Herein, we rationally synthesized an ultrabright xanthene fluorescence probe Me-hNR for mitochondria-specific super-resolution imaging using structured illumination microscopy (SIM). The rigid structure of Me-hNR provided its ultrahigh fluorescence quantum yield of up to 0.92 and ultrahigh brightness of up to 16,000. Occupying the para-position of the O atom in the xanthene skeleton by utilizing the smallest methyl group ensured its excellent stability. The study of the photophysical process indicated that Me-hNR mainly emitted fluorescence via radiative decay, and nonradiative decay and inter-system crossing were rare due to the slow nonradiative decay rate and large energy gap (ΔEst = 0.55 eV). Owing to these excellent merits, Me-hNR can specifically light up mitochondria at ultralow concentrations down to 5 nM. The unprecedented spatial resolution for mitochondria with an fwhm of 174 nm was also achieved. Therefore, this ultrabright xanthene fluorescence probe has great potential in visualizing the structural changes of mitochondria and revealing the pathogenesis of related diseases using SIM.

Oral lichen planus (OLP), a T-lymphocyte-mediated disease of the oral mucosa, has a complex pathogenesis that involves a number of factors. The disease is characterized by recurrent episodes and requires continuous follow up, and there is no curative treatment available. Erosive lichen planus, among others, has a risk of malignant transformation and requires standardized treatment to control its progression. Different clinical subtypes of oral lichen planus require appropriate treatment. Pharmacological treatments are the most widely available and have the greatest variety of options and a number of novel pharmacological treatments are presented as highlights, including JAK enzyme inhibitors. The second is photodynamic therapy, which is the leading physiological treatment. In addition, periodontal treatment and psychological treatment should not be neglected. In this review, we briefly discuss the most recent developments in therapies for oral lichen planus after summarizing the most widely used clinical treatments, aiming to provide different proposals for future clinical treatment.
