RESUMO

The control of thermal radiation by shaping its spatial and spectral emission characteristics plays a key role in many areas of science and engineering. Conventional approaches to tailoring thermal emission using metamaterials are hampered both by the limited spatial resolution of the required subwavelength material structures and by the materials' strong absorption in the infrared. In this work, we demonstrate an approach based on the concept of topology. By changing a single parameter of a multilayer coating, we were able to control the reflection topology of a surface, with the critical point of zero reflection being topologically protected. The boundaries between subcritical and supercritical spatial domains host topological interface states with near-unity thermal emissivity. These topological concepts enable unconventional manipulation of thermal light for applications in thermal management and thermal camouflage.

RESUMO

Using graphene as a tunable optical material enables a series of optical devices such as switchable radar absorbers, variable infrared emissivity surfaces, or visible electrochromic devices. These devices rely on controlling the charge density on graphene with electrostatic gating or intercalation. In this paper, we studied the effect of ionic liquid intercalation on the long-term performance of optoelectronic devices operating within a broad infrared wavelength range. Our spectroscopic and thermal characterization results reveal the key limiting factors for the intercalation process and the performance of the infrared devices, such as the electrolyte ion-size asymmetry and charge distribution scheme and the effects of oxygen. Our results provide insight for the limiting mechanism for graphene applications in infrared thermal management and tunable heat signature control.

RESUMO

The topological structure associated with the branch point singularity around an exceptional point (EP) can provide tools for controlling the propagation of light. Through use of graphene-based devices, we demonstrate the emergence of EPs in an electrically controlled interaction between light and a collection of organic molecules in the terahertz regime at room temperature. We show that the intensity and phase of terahertz pulses can be controlled by a gate voltage, which drives the device across the EP. Our electrically tunable system allows reconstruction of the Riemann surface associated with the complex energy landscape and provides topological control of light by tuning the loss imbalance and frequency detuning of interacting modes. Our approach provides a platform for developing topological optoelectronics and studying the manifestations of EP physics in light-matter interactions.

RESUMO

Optical materials with colour-changing abilities have been explored for display devices1, smart windows2,3, or modulation of visual appearance4-6. The efficiency of these materials, however, has strong wavelength dependence, which limits their functionality to a specific spectral range. Here, we report graphene-based electro-optical devices with unprecedented optical tunability covering the entire electromagnetic spectrum from the visible to microwave. We achieve this non-volatile and reversible tunability by electro-intercalation of lithium into graphene layers in an optically accessible device structure. This unique colour-changing capability, together with area-selective intercalation, inspires fabrication of new multispectral devices, including display devices and electro-optical camouflage coating. We anticipate that these results provide realistic approaches for programmable smart optical surfaces with a potential utility in many scientific and engineering fields such as active plasmonics and adaptive thermal management.

RESUMO

Interactive clothing requires sensing and display functionalities to be embedded on textiles. Despite the significant progress of electronic textiles, the integration of optoelectronic materials on fabrics remains as an outstanding challenge. In this Letter, using the electro-optical tunability of graphene, we report adaptive optical textiles with electrically controlled reflectivity and emissivity covering the infrared and near-infrared wavelengths. We achieve electro-optical modulation by reversible intercalation of ions into graphene layers laminated on fabrics. We demonstrate a new class of infrared textile devices including display, yarn, and stretchable devices using natural and synthetic textiles. To show the promise of our approach, we fabricated an active device directly onto a t-shirt, which enables long-wavelength infrared communication via modulation of the thermal radiation from the human body. The results presented here provide complementary technologies which could leverage the ubiquitous use of functional textiles.

RESUMO

Chalcogenide materials are promising for optical resonant mode tuning of whispering gallery mode (WGM) microresonators due to their high nonlinearity. In this study, this phenomenon was demonstrated for Ge2Sb2Te5-coated toroidal microresonators using an optical postprocess, which utilizes the intrinsically photosensitive property of the Ge2Sb2Te5 coating. A signal laser was used to illuminate the resonator for permanent tuning of the WGMs in a sensitive manner. 0.01 nm and 0.02 nm permanent tuning of the WGMs was recorded for 5 nm and 10 nm coated resonators, respectively. This technique enables resonance matching of coupled optical resonators, which could pave the way for optoelectronic circuitries employing multiple optical microresonators.

RESUMO

Continuous development of security features is mandatory for the fight against forgery of valuable documents and products, the most notable example being banknotes. Such features demonstrate specific properties under certain stimuli such as fluorescent patterns glowing under ultraviolet light. These security features should also be hard to copy by unlicensed people and be interrogated by anyone using easily accessible tools. To this end, this Letter demonstrates the development of an ideal security feature enabled by the realization of modular metamaterials based on metal-dielectric-metal cavities that consist of two separate parts: metal nanoparticles on an elastomeric substrate and a bottom mirror coated with a thin dielectric. Patterns generated by creating nanometer-thick changes in the dielectric layer are invisible (encrypted) and can only be detected (decrypted) by sticking the elastomeric patch on. The observed optical effects such as visibility and colors can only be produced with the correct combination of materials and film thicknesses, making the proposed structures a strong alternative to compromised security features.

RESUMO

π-Conjugated small molecules based on a [1]benzothieno[3,2-b]benzothiophene (BTBT) unit are of great research interest in the development of solution-processable semiconducting materials owing to their excellent charge-transport characteristics. However, the BTBT π-core has yet to be demonstrated in the form of electro-active one-dimensional (1D) nanowires that are self-assembled in aqueous media for potential use in bioelectronics and tissue engineering. Here we report the design, synthesis, and self-assembly of benzothienobenzothiophene (BTBT)-peptide conjugates, the BTBT-peptide (BTBT-C3-COHN-Ahx-VVAGKK-Am) and the C8-BTBT-peptide (C8-BTBT-C3-COHN-Ahx-VVAGKK-Am), as ß-sheet forming amphiphilic molecules, which self-assemble into highly uniform nanofibers in water with diameters of 11-13(±1) nm and micron-size lengths. Spectroscopic characterization studies demonstrate the J-type π-π interactions among the BTBT molecules within the hydrophobic core of the self-assembled nanofibers yielding an electrical conductivity as high as 6.0 × 10-6 S cm-1. The BTBT π-core is demonstrated, for the first time, in the formation of self-assembled peptide 1D nanostructures in aqueous media for potential use in tissue engineering, bioelectronics and (opto)electronics. The conductivity achieved here is one of the highest reported to date in a non-doped state.

RESUMO

Metal films covered with ultrathin lossy dielectrics can exhibit strong interference effects manifested as the broad absorption of the incident light resulting in distinct surface colors. Despite their simple bilayer structures, such surfaces have only recently been scrutinized and applied mainly to color printing. Here, we report the use of such surfaces for colorimetric detection of ultrathin dielectrics. Upon deposition of a nanometer-thick dielectric on the surface, the absorption peak red shifts, changing the surface color. The color contrast between the bare and dielectric-coated surfaces can be detected by the naked eye. The optical responses of the surfaces are characterized for nanometer-thick SiO2, Al2O3, and bovine serum albumin molecules. The results suggest that strong interference surfaces can be employed as biosensors.

RESUMO

Peripheral nerve injuries cause devastating problems for the quality of patients' lives, and regeneration following damage to the peripheral nervous system is limited depending on the degree of the damage. Use of nanobiomaterials can provide therapeutic approaches for the treatment of peripheral nerve injuries. Electroactive biomaterials, in particular, can provide a promising cure for the regeneration of nerve defects. Here, a supramolecular electroactive nanosystem with tetra(aniline) (TA)-containing peptide nanofibers was developed and utilized for nerve regeneration. Self-assembled TA-conjugated peptide nanofibers demonstrated electroactive behavior. The electroactive self-assembled peptide nanofibers formed a well-defined three-dimensional nanofiber network mimicking the extracellular matrix of the neuronal cells. Neurite outgrowth was improved on the electroactive TA nanofiber gels. The neural differentiation of PC-12 cells was more advanced on electroactive peptide nanofiber gels, and these biomaterials are promising for further use in therapeutic neural regeneration applications.

RESUMO

Fabrication of supramolecular electroactive materials at the nanoscale with well-defined size, shape, composition, and organization in aqueous medium is a current challenge. Herein we report construction of supramolecular charge-transfer complex one-dimensional (1D) nanowires consisting of highly ordered mixed-stack π-electron donor-acceptor (D-A) domains. We synthesized n-type and p-type ß-sheet forming short peptide-chromophore conjugates, which assemble separately into well-ordered nanofibers in aqueous media. These complementary p-type and n-type nanofibers coassemble via hydrogen bonding, charge-transfer complex, and electrostatic interactions to generate highly uniform supramolecular n/p-coassembled 1D nanowires. This molecular design ensures highly ordered arrangement of D-A stacks within n/p-coassembled supramolecular nanowires. The supramolecular n/p-coassembled nanowires were found to be formed by A-D-A unit cells having an association constant (KA) of 5.18 × 105 M-1. In addition, electrical measurements revealed that supramolecular n/p-coassembled nanowires are approximately 2400 and 10 times more conductive than individual n-type and p-type nanofibers, respectively. This facile strategy allows fabrication of well-defined supramolecular electroactive nanomaterials in aqueous media, which can find a variety of applications in optoelectronics, photovoltaics, organic chromophore arrays, and bioelectronics.

RESUMO

During the fast switching in Ge2Sb2Te5 phase change memory devices, both the amorphous and fcc crystalline phases remain metastable beyond the fcc and hexagonal transition temperatures respectively. In this work, the metastable electrical properties together with crystallization times and resistance drift behaviour of GST are studied using a high-speed, device-level characterization technique in the temperature range of 300 K to 675 K.

RESUMO

Multispectral metamaterial absorbers based on metal-insulator-metal nano-square patch resonators are studied here. For a geometry consisting of perfectly nano-square patches and vertical sidewalls, double resonances in the visible regime are observed due to simultaneous excitation of electric and magnetic plasmon modes. Although slightly modifying the sizes of the square patches makes the resonance wavelengths simply shift, rounding corners of the square patches results in emergence of a third resonance due to excitation of the circular cavity modes. Sidewall angle of the patches are also observed to affect the absorption spectra significantly. Peak absorption values for the triple resonance structures are strongly affected as the sidewall angle varies from 90 to 50 degrees. Rounded corners and slanted sidewalls are typical imperfections for lithographically fabricated metamaterial structures. The presented results suggest that imperfections caused during fabrication of the top nano-structures must be taken into account when designing metamaterial absorbers. Furthermore, it is shown that these fabrication imperfections can be exploited for improving resonance properties and bandwidths of metamaterials for various potential applications such as solar energy harvesting, thermal emitters, surface enhanced spectroscopies and photodetection.

RESUMO

Thermoelectric transport in semiconductors is usually considered under small thermal gradients and when it is dominated by the role of the majority carriers. Not much is known about effects that arise under the large thermal gradients that can be established in high-temperature, small-scale electronic devices. Here, we report a surprisingly large asymmetry in self-heating of symmetric highly doped silicon microwires with the hottest region shifted along the direction of minority carrier flow. We show that at sufficiently high temperatures and strong thermal gradients (~1 K/nm), energy transport by generation, transport and recombination of minority carriers along these structures becomes very significant and overcomes convective energy transport by majority carriers in the opposite direction. These results are important for high-temperature nanoelectronics such as emerging phase-change memory devices which also employ highly doped semiconducting materials and in which local temperatures reach ~1000 K and thermal gradients reach ~10-100 K/nm.
