The proliferation of Raphidiopsis raciborskii blooms has sparked concerns regarding potential human exposure to heightened saxitoxins (STXs) levels. Thus, comprehending how environmental elements drive the proliferation of this STXs-producing species can aid in predicting human exposure risks. This study aimed to explore the link between cyanobacteria R. raciborskii, STXs cyanotoxins, and environmental factors in 37 public supply reservoirs in the tropical region and assess potential health hazards these toxins pose in the reservoir waters. A Structural Equation Model was used to assess the impact of environmental factors (water volume and physical and chemical variables) on R. raciborskii biomass and STXs levels. Furthermore, the potential risk of STXs exposure from consuming untreated reservoir water was evaluated. Lastly, the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of STXs across the reservoirs was computed. Our findings revealed a correlation between R. raciborskii biomass and STXs concentrations. Total phosphorus emerged as a critical environmental factor positively influencing species biomass and indirectly affecting STXs levels. pH significantly influenced STXs concentrations, indicating different factors influencing R. raciborskii biomass and STXs. Significantly, for the first time, the risk of STXs exposure was gauged using the risk quotient (HQ) for untreated water consumption from public supply reservoirs in Brazil's semi-arid region. Although the exposure risks were generally low to moderate, the CDF underscored the risk of chronic exposure due to low toxin concentrations in over 90% of samples. These outcomes emphasize the potential expansion of R. raciborskii in tropical settings due to increased phosphorus, amplifying waterborne STXs levels and associated intoxication risks. Thus, this study reinforces the importance of nutrient control, particularly phosphorus regulation, as a mitigation strategy against R. raciborskii blooms and reducing STXs intoxication hazards.

Anthropogenic activities have led to excessive loading of phosphorus and nitrogen into water bodies, leading to eutrophication and promoting the growth of cyanobacteria, posing a threat to the health of humans and aquatic animals. Techniques such as Floc & Lock have been developed to mitigate eutrophication by reducing phosphorus concentrations in water and preventing algal blooms. However, little attention has been given to the impact of phosphorus resuspension by sediment-associated organisms such as benthic macroinvertebrates, on the effectiveness of this technique. Here, we experimentally evaluated whether the presence of snails Melanoides tuberculata (Müller, 1774) and larvae of Chironomus sancticaroli (Strixino and Strixino, 1981) affects the efficiency of the Floc & Lock technique. Snails and chironomid larvae are benthic macroinvertebrates commonly found in high abundance in eutrophic reservoirs. Specifically, we tested the hypotheses that (i) the presence of benthic macroinvertebrates reduces the efficiency of coagulants and clays in removing phosphorus and algal biomass from the water column, and (ii) this effect is species-dependent, as some organisms such as the snails, revolve the substrate and resuspend sedimented particles, while other ones, such as chironomid larvae, aid in the removal of phosphorus from the water column by depositing them in the sediment. Our findings revealed that the impact of benthic macroinvertebrates on the effectiveness of the Floc & Lock technique is species-dependent. Chironomid larvae positively influenced the efficiency of the technique by aiding in the removal of total phosphorus, soluble reactive phosphorus, and algal biomass from the water column, depositing them in the sediment. In contrast, the presence of snails had the opposite effect, resulting in increased phosphorus concentration and algal biomass in the water. Surprisingly, the snails consumed the flocs formed by the coagulant and clay within a short time interval of 72 h, raising concerns due to the presence of toxic cyanobacterial biomass in these flocs. Our study emphasizes the importance of considering benthic macroinvertebrates and their impact on the effectiveness of eutrophication management techniques.

The Floc and Sink technique promotes, through the application of coagulants and clays, the removal of phosphorus and algal biomass from the water column by flocculation and sedimentation. Although it is a promising technique for mitigating harmful cyanobacterial blooms, little is known about the impacts on other phytoplankton species as well as it is not known how species with mechanisms of resistance to sedimentation respond to the application of these products. In this study, a laboratory experiment was carried out with water from a eutrophic reservoir to assess the impact of applying aluminum-based coagulants, aluminum sulfate and polyaluminium chloride, and chitosan, alone and combined with lanthanum modified bentonite and natural bentonite on the phytoplankton community, in a functional approach based on morphology (Morphology-Based Functional Groups - MBFG, Kruk et al., 2010 and Reynolds et al., 2014), with an emphasis on the characteristics that provide resistance to sedimentation. We tested two hypotheses: phytoplankton species with adaptive mechanisms that provide buoyancy to cells are more resistant to the removal from the water column by coagulants and clays; and coagulants based on metals and modified clays are more efficient in sedimentation of microalgal cells compared to natural products, regardless of the presence of an adaptive mechanism of resistance to sedimentation. Our results showed that aluminum sulfate and polyaluminium chloride alone or combined with lanthanum modified bentonite and natural bentonite effectively sedimented the cells, regardless of the presence of buoyancy mechanisms. In contrast, the natural coagulant chitosan alone or combined with lanthanum modified bentonite and natural bentonite removed only those species that were small-celled or small colonial without specialized structures or with the presence of spines, arms and siliceous exoskeleton. In the case of species with aerotopes and flagella, the removal was not effective and still caused an increase in algal biomass due to the formation of suspended cell aggregates on the surface of the water column of the experimental units. Therefore, we concluded that the Floc and Sink technique has an impact on the phytoplankton community because it removes from the water column species that are not the target of coagulants and clays, but that are considered important sources of energy in freshwater trophic webs. This result differs according to the type of product used as well as it is related to the morphological adaptations that favor the buoyancy of cells in the water column. Species with aerotopes and flagella are more resistant to sedimentation and may make the use of products applied in the Floc and Sink technique unfeasible. Nevertheless, these results represent only an immediate effect of the technique on the phytoplankton community, thus requiring a longer time scale evaluation to determine the algae that can effectively recover water column. Therefore, we also emphasize that algae of nutritional value can recover over time and make the long-term application of the technique acceptable.

Evaluating the conservation of aquatic ecosystems, especially those which serve to supply, has been carried out using a variety of tools. However, the perception of water quality by the local community which lives in direct contact with water resources has not been considered with enough importance. This study analysed the relationship between the conservation status of reservoirs as perceived by the local community and their conservation status according to physical, chemical, and biological indicators. To do so, we calculated the Trophic State Index (TSI) of the reservoirs, the diversity and richness of benthic macroinvertebrate and we analysed the human influence in the riparian zone. Thus, we created the Community Conservation Perception Index (CCPI) to quantitatively associate the perception of the local community with environmental quality indicators (TSI, diversity, richness and anthropogenic influences in the riparian zone). We found that interviewee perception of reservoir conservation (using the CCPI) was related to trophic state, richness and diversity of benthic macroinvertebrate, and the presence of residences and agriculture in the riparian zone. It is necessary to consider the environmental perception of the local community as a relevant factor in management programmes and the conservation of ecosystems, even if artificial, as is the case with reservoirs. These communities can significantly contribute to maintaining the environmental quality through their performance in participatory management in projects such as: participating in the investigation of pollution in reservoirs, collecting parameters related to water quality, and community action in designing conservation strategies.

Predictions of more frequent and intense toxic cyanobacterial blooms in the future arise due to the synergistic effects of eutrophication combined with climate change. Thus, the intensification of dry conditions in arid and semiarid areas promotes a reduction in the water level of aquatic ecosystems and favors the growth of cyanobacteria. Among these conditions, there is a lack of consensus on the role of nitrogen (N) or phosphorus (P) limitation, particularly when cyanobacterial communities are dominated by N-fixing taxa. The present study evaluated the effects of water volume reduction on cyanobacterial abundance and heterocyst production in semiarid tropical reservoirs during a period of prolonged drought. Physicochemical variables and the phytoplankton community were analyzed, and a structural equation model was built to identify the variables that explain the heterocystous cyanobacteria and heterocysts. The reduction in water volume increased the cyanobacterial biomass due to the increase in the biomass of heterocystous filamentous cyanobacteria associated with higher production of heterocysts. Heterocysts were correlated with an increase in the trophic status, low light availability and high salinity maintained under the lower volume conditions. In addition, contrary to expectations, heterocysts were not correlated with the N:P ratio, which suggests that in the tropics, N fixation does not necessarily occur when the N:P ratio is low, and N is limiting. These results indicate the potential for dominance of heterocystous filamentous cyanobacteria in future climate change scenarios, and therefore, we recommend that bloom mitigation strategies prioritize the reduction of N and P associated with the control of variables that favor heterocystous filamentous (i.e., light and salinity). We also recommend including cyanotoxin analysis in the relationship with lowering the water level to determine whether cell-bound toxin production and the associated risk to aquatic biota and humans are increased in the dry period.

Abstract For mitigation of environmental problems generated by bad water resource management, the first step is to develop methods for effective diagnosis. The potential bioindicator, mainly in the benthic community, in the evaluation of water quality is the structure of the community, associated with magnitude of environmental impact. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of abundance biomass curves (ABC) as tools to estimate ecological quality in reservoirs in the Brazilian semi-arid region. Two reservoirs, Epitácio Pessoa and Argemiro de Figueiredo were selected. These reservoirs are located in the watershed of the Paraíba River, in Northeast Brazil. Sampling was done at 40 sites in the littoral region of each reservoir, during the periods of higher and lower water volume in the reservoirs. ABC for semi-arid region reservoirs showed disparate results for biological and environmental indicators, because they had a better relationship with momentary variables (physical and chemical parameters). This may be related to the high occurrence of exotic species, principally Corbicula largillierti, which has a high biomass, in association with a severe drought period. ABC must thus be used with parsimony and combined with other indicators, for an accurate and coherent characterization.


Resumo Para mitigação de problemas ambientais gerados pela má gestão de recursos hídricos, o primeiro passo é o desenvolvimento metodologias de diagnósticos eficientes. O potencial bioindicador, principalmente da comunidade bentônica, na avaliação da qualidade da água deve-se aos aspectos estruturais dessa comunidade, associado com a magnitude de impactos ambientais. O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a eficiência das curvas de biomassa e abundância (ABC) como ferramentas para estimar a qualidade ecológica em reservatórios na região do semi-árido brasileiro. Dois reservatórios, Epitácio Pessoa e Argemiro de Figueiredo foram selecionados. Estes reservatórios estão localizados na bacia do rio Paraíba, no nordeste do Brasil. As coletas foram realizadas em 40 locais na região litorânea de cada reservatório, durante os períodos de maior e menor volume de hídrico. As curvas ABC, quando plotadas em reservatórios do semiárido, apresentaram resultados diferentes aos indicadores biológicos e ambientais, tendo uma relação melhor com as variáveis ​​momentâneas (parâmetros físicos e químicos). Isso pode estar relacionado à alta ocorrência de espécies exóticas, principalmente Corbicula largillierti, o que reflete uma elevada biomassa, combinada com um período severo de seca. O método ABC devem ser utilizadas com parcimônia e associada a outros indicadores, para uma caraterização coerente e precisa.

Abstract Atypical drought events have increasingly occurred in Brazil over the last years due to global climate changes. However, their consequences on aquatic biota in reservoirs are poorly known. We tested the hypothesis that macroinvertebrate communities are negatively affected by atypical drought events, given the sensitivity of many taxa to environmental changes. We predicted that: (a) there would be changes in limnological and sediment parameters between a regular year and an atypical year, (b) abundance and richness of the genera of Chironomidae and of exotic species would be higher due to the enhanced ability of these organisms to adapt to changes in the physical environment, and (c) community structure metrics (i. richness; ii. % richness; iii. abundance; iv. % abundance) would be affected by disturbance indices (i. Buffer Disturbance Index-BDI; ii. Local Disturbance Index-LDI; iii. Integrated Disturbance Index-IDI) in both years. The study was carried out in the reservoir of the Nova Ponte Hydroelectric Power Plant, state of Minas Gerais, comparing two sampling periods: a regular climatological year (2010) and an atypical drought year (2014). A total of 40 sampling sites were defined along the shore of the reservoir, and types of land use in the surrounding area of each site were measured, as well as physical habitat conditions, sediments, and benthic macroinvertebrate communities. Sampling was performed at these sites in the end of the rainy season in both years. The intensity of anthropogenic modifications was assessed at local scale and in the areas (buffers) surrounding the sampling sites using quantitative disturbance indices. There were striking differences in limnological parameters and sediment characteristics between sampling periods. Taxonomic richness was significantly lower in the drought year. As opposed to our predictions, richness and abundance of Chironomidae and exotic species did not increase with the atypical drought event. Besides, most community structure metrics showed a significant relationship with disturbance indices only during the regular climatological year, thus indicating that the large-scale effects of water stress may override the conditions of local habitats and the surrounding landscape. Therefore, in addition to a correct political-environmental management of water resources at local-scale, which includes maintaining the water quality and the riparian and landscape integrity, addressing large-scale climate issues is required for the maintenance of the ecological integrity of tropical reservoirs.


Resumo A ocorrência de episódios atípicos de seca vem crescendo nos últimos anos no Brasil em decorrência de mudanças globais no clima. Entretanto, as consequências disso para a biota aquática são ainda pouco conhecidas. Testamos a hipótese de que comunidades de macroinvertebrados são negativamente afetadas por eventos de seca atípica, dada a sensibilidade de muitos taxa às alterações ambientais. Nossas predições foram que (a) parâmetros limnológicos e características de sedimento seriam alterados em um ano de seca atípica, (b) encontraríamos maior abundância e riqueza de gêneros de Chironomidae e de espécies exóticas dada à alta capacidade destes organismos de adaptarem-se às mudanças no ambiente, (c) métricas de estrutura de comunidade (i. riqueza; ii. % riqueza; iii. abundância e iv. % abundância) seriam afetadas por índices de distúrbio (i. Índice de Distúrbio no Buffer-IDB; ii. Índice de Distúrbio Local-IDL e iii. Índice de Distúrbio Integrado-IDI) em ambos os anos. O estudo foi realizado no reservatório da Usina Hidrelétrica de Nova Ponte, Minas Gerais, comparando dois períodos amostrais: um ano climatológico normal (2010) e um ano de seca atípica (2014). Foram definidos 40 sítios amostrais na região litorânea do reservatório onde foram mensurados os tipos de usos do solo no entorno, condições de habitats físicos, características limnológicas na coluna d'água, sedimento e comunidades de macroinvertebrados bentônicos. A intensidade de alterações antrópicas foi avaliada em escala local e no entorno dos pontos amostrais (buffers) por meio de índices de distúrbio. Observamos diferenças expressivas nos parâmetros limnológicos e nas características dos sedimentos entre os dois períodos amostrais. A riqueza taxonômica foi significativamente menor no ano de seca. Ao contrário do esperado, os valores de riqueza e abundância de Chironomidae e de espécies exóticas não aumentaram com o evento extremo de seca. Paralelamente, a maioria das métricas de estrutura de comunidade apresentou relação significativa com os índices de distúrbio somente durante o ano climatológico normal, indicando que os efeitos de estresse hídrico em larga escala podem se sobrepor às condições locais de habitat e de paisagem circundante. Portanto, deve ser considerada não só a correta gestão político-ambiental de recursos hídricos em escala local, que inclui a manutenção da qualidade da água e da integridade da região ripária e uso do solo da região de entorno, mas também abordar questões climáticas em larga escala faz-se necessário para a manutenção da integridade ecológica em reservatórios tropicais.

Abstract The scale of impact that the São Francisco River transposition project will have on the drainage basins ichthyofauna is still unclear, however, changes in the fish community diversity and abundance is probable. Surveys and registries of the fish fauna within key systems of the catchment basins are priority actions for the conservation of the aquatic diversity. This study conducted a taxonomic survey of the Epitácio Pessoa (Boqueirão municipality) and Argemiro de Figueiredo (Itatuba municipality), reservoirs ichthyofauna, both belonging to the Paraíba do Norte River basin, important socioeconomic and environmental systems for the transposition project. Monthly sampling was carried out between October/2014 to September/2015 in the upstream and downstream zones of the reservoirs. The specimens were collected using dip nets, drag nets, and sieves, and placed on ice in the field. Later in the laboratory, they were transferred to 10% formaldehyde and then preserved in 70% alcohol. A total of 2,328 specimens were collected representing five orders, 14 families, and 31 species in both systems. At the upstream zones 2057 specimens were collected representing 17 species, and at the downstream zones 271 specimens were collected representing 24 species. Of the 31 species recorded, 13 species are endemic to watersheds that drain rivers from the Brazilian semi-arid region, and seven species (Apareiodon davisi, Characidium bimaculatum, Hypostomus pusarum, Parotocinclus jumbo, P. spilosoma, Pimelodella enochi, and Prochilodus brevis) are endemic to the Mid-Northeastern Caatinga Ecoregion (MNCE). Among the latter, Parotocinclus spilosoma and Pimelodella enochi are endemic to the Paraíba do Norte River. Apareiodon davisi is classified as Endangered according to the current published Brazil's official list of endangered species of fish and aquatic invertebrates. This pre-transposition ichthyofaunistic survey will serve as a basis for future post-transposition analyzes, considering this action will change the scope of the ecosystems diversity.


Resumo A dimensão do impacto que a transposição do rio São Francisco provocará na ictiofauna das bacias receptoras ainda é imprecisa, entretanto, é provável que haja alterações na riqueza e abundância da comunidade de peixes. Levantamentos e registros prévios da fauna íctica em sistemas chaves das bacias receptoras são ações prioritárias para a conservação da diversidade aquática. Este estudo realizou o levantamento taxonômico da ictiofauna dos reservatórios Epitácio Pessoa (município de Boqueirão), e Argemiro de Figueiredo (município Itatuba), ambos pertencentes a bacia hidrográfica do rio Paraíba do Norte, estado da Paraíba, importantes sistemas sócioeconômicos e ambientais para o projeto da transposição. Assim, foram realizadas amostragens mensais de Outubro/2014 a Setembro/2015 nas zonas lacustres e a jusante dos reservatórios. Os espécimes foram coletados com redes de espera, tarrafa, arrasto, peneiras e puçás, em seguida acondicionados em gelo no campo, posteriormente no laboratório, transferidos para o formol a 10% e conservados em álcool 70%. Foram coletados um total de 2328 espécimes distribuídas em 31 espécies, 14 famílias e cinco ordens nos dois sistemas. Nas zonas lacustres foram coletados 2057 espécimes distribuídos em 17 espécies e nas áreas a jusantes foram coletados 271 indivíduos, distribuídos em 24 espécies. Das 31 espécies registradas, 13 são endêmicas das bacias hidrográficas que drenam rios do semiárido brasileiro, destas, sete (Apareiodon davisi, Characidium bimaculatum, Hypostomus pusarum, Parotocinclus jumbo, P. spilosoma, Pimelodella enochi e Prochilodus brevis) são endêmicas do Nordeste Médio Oriental. Dentre estas últimas, P. spilosoma e Pimelodella enochi são endêmicas do rio Paraíba do Norte. Apareiodon davisi é classificada como Em Perigo de acordo com a atual lista oficial de espécies ameaçadas de peixes e invertebrados aquáticos no Brasil. Este levantamento ictiofaunístico pré-transposição servirá de base para análises futuras pós-transposição, considerando que esta ação acarretará mudanças no âmbito de diversidade dos ecossistemas em questão.

The introduction of exotic mollusk species has resulted in loss of biodiversity in semi-arid neotropical aquatic ecosystems. This study aims to relate the presence and density of Corbicula largillierti species to human disturbance, providing data for the conservation and management of aquatic ecosystems. Specimens were collected at Epitácio Pessoa reservoir in December 2011 and June 2012, presenting densities of 20.96 and 62.89 individuals per square meter, respectively. Anthropic disturbance metrics were calculated considering the presence, type and intensity of disturbance in littoral, riparian and flood zones. The occurrence of C. largillierti was mainly associated to the variables total phosphorus (261.05 ± 342.22 µg/L) and total nitrogen (440.79 ± 103.77 µg/L), near to tributaries. The occurrence of exotic mollusk species is evidence of the need for freshwater ecosystem conservation and management, particularly in reservoirs used for water supply.


A introdução de espécies exóticas de moluscos resulta em perda de biodiversidade em ecossistemas aquáticos semiáridos neotropicais. Este estudo tem o objetivo de relacionar a presença e densidade da espécie Corbicula largillierti ao distúrbio humano, fornecendo dados para a conservação e manejo de ecossistemas aquáticos. Os espécimes foram coletados no reservatório Epitácio Pessoa em dezembro de 2011 e junho de 2012, com densidades de 20,96 e 62,89 indivíduos por metro quadrado, respectivamente. Métricas de perturbação antrópica foram calculadas considerando a presença, tipo e intensidade de perturbação nas zonas litorânea, ribeirinha e de inundação. A ocorrência de C. largillerti esteve associada ès variáveis fósforo total (261,05 ± 342,22 μg/L) e nitrogênio total (440,79 ± 103,77 μg/L), em locais próximos aos afluentes. A ocorrência de espécies exóticas de moluscos evidencia a necessidade de conservação e manejo de ecossistemas de água doce, principalmente em reservatórios utilizados para abastecimento de água.

Corbicula largillierti is a native mollusk from China. In Brazil, this species was first recorded in the Pantanal of Mato Grosso. This short communication reports the occurrence of C. largillierti for the first time in the Paraíba river basin (Brazilian semi-arid), and also considers the risk of introduction of other molluscs invaders in this basin due to the diversion of water from the São Francisco River. Densities of individuals ranged from 33 to 65 ind.m-2 (maximum values of 484 ind.m-2) in coarse sediment (gravel, 2-4 mm). The diversion of waters from the São Francisco river can lead to the introduction of new species, enhancing ecological problems in the Paraiba river basin.


Corbicula largillierti é um molusco nativo da China. No Brasil esta espécie foi registrada primeiramente no Pantanal do Mato Grosso. Esta nota registra a primeira ocorrência de C. largillierti na bacia do Rio Paraíba (semiárido brasileiro). Considera também os riscos potenciais de introdução de outros moluscos invasores nesta bacia devido è transposição das águas do Rio São Francisco. As densidades do molusco variaram de 33 a 65 ind.m-2 (atingindo valor máximo de 484 ind.m-2) em sedimentos grossos (cascalho, 2-4 mm). The present study evaluated the predation effects of the gastropod Melanoides tuberculatus on the taxa richness and density of the periphyton community. A laboratory experiment was conducted with two treatments: control (without M. tuberculatus) and with M. tuberculatus, each treatment being replicated four times. For periphyton colonization, glass slides were placed in 3.5 L of water from the environment of the gastropods. The analysis of species richness and density of the periphyton community on these artificial substrates showed significant differences (p <0.05) between treatments. In the treatment with M. tuberculatus, taxa richness and density were lower, with a predominance of Chantrasia macrospora in the last days of the experiment. It follows that predation by M. tuberculatus destabilizes the course of periphyton colonization, suggesting the possibility of disruption of natural food chains, however, more studies are needed in this perspectives.


O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar os efeitos da predação de Melanoides tuberculatus sobre a riqueza de táxons e densidade da comunidade perifítica. Foi realizado experimento em laboratório, com dois tratamentos: controle (ausência de M. tuberculatus) e com M. tuberculatus, sendo cada tratamento replicado quatro vezes. Para a colonização da comunidade perifítica foram colocados 3,5 L de água do ambiente de origem dos gastrópodes, em cada tratamento e 49 cm2 de substrato previamente colonizado e 20 lâminas como substratos artificiais, durante 24 dias. A análise da riqueza de táxons e densidades da comunidade perifítica nos substratos artificiais mostrou diferença (p<0,05) entre os tratamentos. Os tratamentos com M. tuberculatus apresentaram menor riqueza e densidade, com predominância da Chantrasia macrospora nos últimos dias do experimento. Conclui-se que a predação do M. tuberculatus desestabiliza o curso da colonização do perifiton e consequentemente pode causar a ruptura das cadeias naturais, contudo mais estudos nessa perspectiva são necessários.

The present work presents an inventory of the traditional medicinal uses of animals in the municipality of Bom Sucesso in Paraíba State (PB) in the semiarid northeastern region of Brazil. Information was obtained through the use of semi-structured interviews with 50 people who use zootherapeutic products. A total of 25 animal species used for medicinal purposes were identified (18 vertebrates and seven invertebrates) distributed among five taxonomic categories; the groups with the largest numbers of citations were: mammals (8 citations), insects (7), and reptiles (5). The most cited animal species were: Tubinambis merianae "teju" lizards (44 citations); Apis mellifera Italian honeybees (318 citations); Gallus gallus chickens (31 citations); Ovis aries sheep (31 citations); Crotalus durissus rattlesnakes (14 citations); Boa constrictor (12 citations); and Bos taurus cattle (12 citations). A significant number of illnesses and conditions treated with animal-based medicines were cited, and the category with the greatest number of citations was "problems affecting the respiratory system". Our results suggest that the use of zootherapeutics in the region is persistent, and that knowledge about these curative practices is an integral part of the regional culture. As such, studies concerning the uses of zootherapeutics are important windows to understanding human/environmental/cultural interactions and a pathway to conciliating regional cultures with efforts to conserve the native fauna.
