RESUMO

PURPOSE: To report the initial safety and effectiveness profile for an anterior shape-changing, modular IOL, Juvene IOL (JIOL), for the treatment of aphakia and presbyopia after removal of the natural crystalline lens due to cataract. SETTING: 2 private practices in Monterrey and Tijuana, Mexico. DESIGN: Exploratory prospective multicenter open-label noncomparative clinical trial. METHODS: A convenience sample of patients aged 50 to 80 years with planned cataract surgery was recruited to undergo unilateral or bilateral implantation with the JIOL. Patients were required to complete an informed consent and be able to dilate to at least 6.0 mm pharmacologically, be in good overall health, and have no significant eye health history to qualify. Visual acuities, defocus curves, and contrast sensitivity were measured for all patients 12 months postoperatively. RESULTS: 51 of 58 eyes completed the 12-month visit. Intraoperative complication rates were extremely low (n = 1; missed base lens tab). The most frequent adverse events (AEs) were prolonged inflammation (N = 6) and cystoid macular edema (N = 4); all AEs were resolved without sequelae by the 12-month visit. The mean monocular logMAR corrected distance visual acuity, distance-corrected intermediate visual acuity, and distance-corrected near visual acuity were 0.01, 0.08, and 0.24, respectively. Defocus testing showed visual acuity > 20/40 from approximately +1.00 through -2.00 diopters. Binocular implantation (n = 16) provided superior performance over monocular implantation. CONCLUSIONS: The JIOL offers a new solution to treat presbyopia, providing clear functional vision performance across a range of distances with an acceptable initial safety profile.

RESUMO

Lopezia racemosa Cav. (Onagraceae) has been used in Mexican traditional medicine to alleviate stomachache, biliary colic, urine retention, stomach cancer, and skin, dental, buccal, and urinary infections. The objective of this study was to determine the bioactivities of specific parts of the plant to scientifically confirm its traditional use. Aerial parts and flowers were macerated and subsequently extracted with hexane, chloroform, and methanol. This study was focused on the analysis of polar components, and thus the methanolic fractions were selected for further investigations. These fractions were evaluated for their antimicrobial activity using a panel of bacterial Gram-positive and -negative strains, as well as fungal strains, including filamentous fungi and yeasts. In addition, the cytotoxic activity of the extract was assessed by MTT using the human-derived monocytic THP-1 and the normal human fibroblast cell lines. Various fractions showed antimicrobial activity against various pathogens, although the most relevant were against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. No inhibition of yeasts was recorded. Only four fractions showed cytotoxic effects when the human-derived THP-1 and fibroblast cells were assessed. The four flavonoids isolated from the extract were luteolin, luteolin-6-C-hexoside, luteolin-8-C-hexoside, and hyperoside. The biological activities presented in this study validate some traditional uses of the plant.

RESUMO

Novel reactivity for π-conjugated triazenes is herein reported. This observed and unprecedented triazene reactivity gave access to oxidation and substitution reactions. These transformations include successful synthesis of aldehydes, ketones, ethers, and sulfides from readily available organic azides via π-conjugated triazene intermediates. Notably, the afforded adducts were obtained in good yields, at room temperature, and in the absence of added metal catalysts.

RESUMO

UNLABELLED: Chondroblastoma is a chondroid bone tumor that frequently affects long bone epiphysis, malignancy occurs infrequently. It can alter the morphology of the joint, and appears in the second decade of life before ossification of the physes. Chondroblastoma accounts for 10% of chondroid tumors, on X-rays, it appears as a small radiolucent lesion, well defined with lytic activity and in case of aggressiveness, the lesion can extend to metaphyses. According to Enneking's classification, chondroblastoma is benign injury, with capacity of physes destruction. Prognosis improves when treatment is carried out in a timely manner. It appears clinically in the shoulder, with pain, range of motion limitation, and poor answer to NSAID's and/or physical therapy. We present a 17 year old male, with a two-year history of nightly pain of the shoulder, with poor response to NSAID's therapy, and sever ROM limitation. On plain X-rays a lytic expansive lesion involving proximal humeral epiphysis was found. We performed wide curettage aided by fluoroscopy and 60 grams of lyophilized bone graft were used. RESULTS: At 2-year follow-up full integration of bone graft, complete remission of symptoms and painless ROM of the shoulder were achieved.
