RESUMO

Laboratory experiments were conducted with Daphnia magna and Hyalella sp. grown on a single food source of known isotopic composition at a range of temperatures spanning the physiological optima for each species. Daphnia raised at 26.5 degrees C were enriched in delta(13)C and delta(15)N by 3.1 and 2.8 per thousand, respectively, relative to diet. Daphnia raised at 12.8 degrees C were enriched 1.7 and 5.0 per thousand in delta(13)C and delta(15)N, respectively. Results imply a significant negative relationship between the delta(13)C and delta(15)N of primary consumers when a temperature gradient exists. Similar responses were observed for Hyalella. Results indicate a general increase in delta(13)C enrichment and decrease in delta(15)N enrichment as temperature rises. Deviations from the commonly applied isotopic enrichment values used in aquatic ecology were attributed to changes in temperature-mediated physiological rates. Field data from a variety of sources also showed a general trend toward delta(13)C enrichment with increasing temperature in marine and lacustrine zooplankton. Multivariate regression models demonstrated that, in oligotrophic and mesotrophic lakes, zooplankton delta(13)C was related to lake-specific POM delta(13)C, lake surface temperature and latitude. Temperature-dependent isotopic separation (enrichment) between predator and prey should be taken into consideration when interpreting the significance of isotopic differences within and among aquatic organisms and ecosystems, and when assigning organisms to food-web positions on the basis of observed isotope values.

In this study, we assessed the acute and chronic toxicity of sediments contaminated by bleached kraft pulp mill effluent (BKME). Sediments were collected in August 1991 and 1992, and May 1993 from eight stations exposed directly to the effluent and from four reference sites.Acute toxicity was determined for five macroinvertebrates (Hyalella azteca, Daphnia magna, Chironomus riparius, Hexagenia spp., and Tubifex tubifex) using pore water, elutriate, and bulk sediment exposures. Chronic toxicity was assessed using C. tentans and H. azteca (growth and survival) and D. magna and T. tubifex (reproduction) in bulk sediment exposures. Mortality declined with decreasing proximity to the outfall; acute toxicity (>20% mortality after 48 h)was observed at the two stations closest to the outfall (300 and 400 m). At 300 m, pore water was consistently more toxic than elutriate or bulk sediment phases, resulting in 100% mortality for all invertebrates except T. tubifex (23%). Elutriate exposures were toxic to C. riparius (88%), D. magna (54%), and Hexagenia (47%), but not H. azteca. Bulk sediments were toxic to Hexagenia (100%) and D. magna(88%), but not to C. riparius or H. azteca. In chronic tests, mortality in H. azteca and T. tubifex was highest at 300 and 400 m, indicating that toxicity observed in the short-term aqueous exposures adequately predicted long-term toxicity in bulk sediments. In both acute and chronic tests, mortality was significantly correlated with the concentration of extractable organic chlorines (EOCl) in the sediment, with LC50 values ranging from 4500 to 5500 mg EOCl/kg organic carbon. Growth of C. tentans larvae was depressed at 300 and 400 m in August 91 but enhanced in May 93 relative to the reference sites. Growth of H.azteca also declined near the outfall in August 91 sediments and was approximately one half that observed in 92/93 sediments; however, growth did not differ among stations in 92 or 93. Reproductive output in D. magna (neonates) and T. tubifex (cocoons) was highest at 300 and 400 m. In T. tubifex, the number of hatched young was lowest at these stations. This study provides evidence that toxicity may occur in sediments exposed to BKME, and emphasizes the need to incorporate sediment toxicity bioassessment as part of efforts directed toward remedial action in the pulp and paper industry.

Samples of benthic invertebrates from four pairs of streams in southwestern Ontario collected monthly from May through August 1991, and once during the subsequent autumn and winter, demonstrated that conservation tillage practices have a remedial effect on the water quality of adjacent streams as indicated by biotic, rather than physical or chemical, parameters. One stream of each pair drained a basin under conventional tillage (CONV, mainly mouldboard ploughing), the other primarily under conservation tillage (CONS). The paired drainage basins were otherwise similar to one another in type of crops grown, as well as size, topography, soils and hydrology. CONS streams yielded a greater variety of Insecta but fewer taxa of Mollusca, Annelida and Crustacea than did samples from CONV streams. Both kick-net and Surber samples from CONS streams yielded significantly more taxa, more kinds of Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera, and lower Hilsenhoff Biotic Index scores than did samples from CONV streams. Kick samples from CONS streams were significantly more similar to expected reference communities in overall taxonomic composition. Surber samples from CONS streams contained significantly larger numbers of invertebrates. The relatively greater abundances of infaunal species, especially Tubificidae and Chironomini, in CONV streams suggest greater accumulation of fine sediment particles. Conditions during low flow appear to have the greatest influence on the composition of benthic invertebrate communities. The results of the study indicate that conservation tillage practices have a beneficial effect on the quality of surface waters.

The Yamaska River drainage basin in Quebec, Canada, is intensively farmed and heavily polluted with poorly treated domestic and industrial wastes. We investigated the responses of the resident and colonizing components of the benthic macroinvertebrate community to municipal/industrial versus agricultural pollution in the basin, and evaluated the performances of seven diversity and biotic indices for assessing water quality. Samples of riffle-dwelling, infaunal and colonizing invertebrates were collected from 13 stations representing a wide range of types and degrees of pollution using Surber, scoop and artificial substrate samplers. The data were summarized using the indices S (number of taxa), N (number of individuals), H' (Shannon-Wiener's diversity index), D (Simpson's diversity index), BBI (Belgian Biotic Index), TBI (a modification of Hilsenhoff's Biotic Index), % CHIR (percentage of arthropods consisting of Chironomidae) and %OLIGO (percentage of total organisms consisting of Oligochaeta). Different components of the community generated somewhat different assessments and were, therefore, complementary. Community composition, expressed as the percentage of individuals contributed by major taxonomic groups, reflected the kinds of stresses at a station more consistently than did any of the indices. S and TBI came closest to ranking control, agricultural and municipal/industrial sites in accordance with our a priori classification, both between months and among sampling methods. %OLIGO usually separated municipal/industrial sites from control sites. Other indices were found to be less sensitive, accurate or temporally stable, or were otherwise inappropriate for use with certain sampling methods or for certain types of pollution. With most of our samples, all of the summary indices suggested that the impact of agricultural practices on stream ecosystems may be as severe as the impacts of municipal and industrial wastes.

RESUMO

White sucker (Catostomus commersoni) collected from the Manitouwadge chain of lakes show a lower growth rate and fecundity in lakes contaminated with copper and zinc from a mixed metal mine. This study evaluated whether the changes in performance of the fish were related to direct impacts of the metals or indirect impacts associated with changes in food availability. Concentrations of metals in the water and sediment of lakes in the Manitouwadge chain were elevated, relative to reference sites. The concentrations of Cu and Zn in the digesta of white sucker were significantly higher, as were the levels of both Cu and Zn in liver, kidney, and gill tissue. Muscle and spleen levels of Cu and Zn were significantly lower or not different from controls. Tissue levels were within the homeostatic range for Cu and Zn. However, the total density of invertebrates varied from greater than 25,000 m-2 at control sites to less than 13,000 m-2 at contaminated sites, and the number of genera recorded was more than 50% lower in shallow water samples. There was almost a complete absence of several invertebrate taxa at contaminated sites, including Plecoptera, Ephemeroptera, Odonata, Trichoptera, Amphipoda, and Unionidae. Diptera accounted for 78 to 96% of the total numbers of individuals at metal-contaminated sites as compared with 40 to 75% at the control sites. An analysis of white sucker stomach contents showed that the contents closely reflected the benthic composition observed in the natural substrate. Changes in food availability and feeding activity were correlated with previous changes documented in the growth, fecundity, and lipid levels of white sucker.
