RESUMO

During the period January 2002-December 2004, we assessed 30 sickle-cell anaemia patients admitted to hospital in Al Khobar with vaso-occlusive crisis for levels of antithrombin (AT) III, protein C (PC) and protein S (PS). We also did platelet aggregation studies. Steady state levels were assessed during follow-up and compared with 36 adult controls. Levels of PC, PS and AT III in the control group were significantly higher than in those in vaso-occlusive crisis and those in steady state (P < 0.001). There was a statistically significant difference between controls and patients for all platelet aggregation factors except adrenaline. There was no significant difference between the levels of PC, PS, AT III and platelet aggregation variables in patients in the steady state and in vaso-occlusive crisis.

RESUMO

This study in King Fahd Hospital of the University, Saudi Arabia, assessed the frequency of alloimmunization to red cell antigens in sickle-cell anaemia patients over 1996-2004 in order to evaluate the risk of alloimmunization and identify the most common alloantibodies. A retrospective analysis of the transfusion history and medical records of 350 patients aged 2 to 75 years who had received at least 1 transfusion found that 48 patients had developed alloantibodies (13.7%). The most common alloantibodies detected were: anti-E alone (18.8%), nonspecific (12.5%), inconclusive (12.5%), anti-K (10.4%) and anti-c 3 (6.3%). Some patients had 1 alloantibody, while others more than 1 and even multiple antibodies. Nine patients had a persistent positive direct antiglobulin test.

RESUMO

The prevalence of serological markers of HBV and HCV were determined for blood donors in eastern Saudi Arabia. Between 1998 and 2001, 13,443 donors (10,778 Saudi and 2665 non-Saudi), were screened for HBsAg, anti-HBc Ab, and anti-HCV Ab using commercial kits. There was a steady decrease in the HBsAg (2.58 and 1.67%), anti-HBc rates (15.32 and 9.15%), and anti-HCV (1.04 and 0.59%) rates between 1998 and 2001, respectively. However, there was a marked difference between Saudi and non-Saudi donors with regard to anti-HBc (P < 0.001) and anti-HCV (P < 0.01), but not HBsAg prevalence rates in the same time period.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To study the reported practices of knowledge about and attitude towards smoking among nursing and medical laboratory technology (MLT) students, College of Medicine, King Faisal University at Dammam and Al-Khobar. SETTING: College of Medicine, Dammam and King Fahd Hospital of the University, Al-Khobar, Saudi Arabia METHODS: A cross-sectional approach involving a sample of 266 students and interns (152 nursing and 114 MLT), which included all enrolled students in the academic year (1998/1999). A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data covering knowledge, practice and attitude to smoking. SPSS was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: The overall smoking prevalence was low (5.6%), slightly higher among nursing (6.6%) versus MLT (4.4%) students. Knowledge of and attitude towards smoking was generally satisfactory in both groups, although deficient in some key areas, such as the addictive nature of smoking, some of its consequences on health, and difficulty of quitting. CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The prevalence of smoking among nursing and MLT students is generally low but their knowledge and attitude need improvement. Health education on facts, dangers and consequences of smoking should start as early as the primary school, and should continue throughout the education of future health professionals (role models for the community).
