RESUMO

Abstract The aim of the present study is to assess the effects of selenium nanoparticles on the growth, hematology and nutrients digestibility of Labeorohita fingerlings. Fingerlings were fed with seven isocaloric sunflower meal-based diet supplemented with different concentrations of nanoparticles naming T1 to T7 (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, and 3 mg/kg), with 5% wet body weight while chromic oxide was used as an indigestible marker. After experimentation for 90 days T3 treated group (1mg/kg -1Se-nano level) showed the best result in hematological parameters (WBCs 7.97 ×103mm-3, RBCs 2.98 ×106 mm-3 and Platelet count 67), nutrient digestibility (crude protein: 74%, ether extract: 76%, gross energy: 70%) and growth performance (weight gain 13.24 g, weight gain% 198, feed conversion ratio 1.5, survival rate 100%) as compared to the other treatment groups. Specific growth rates were found significantly higher in T5 than in other groups. The present study indicated positive effect of 1 mg/kg Se-nanoparticles on growth advancement, hematological parameters, and nutrients digestibility of L. rohita fingerlings.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: External catheters (ECs) are commonly used in children who are receiving treatment for acute leukemia. AIMS: To study the spectrum of microorganisms and to compare the rates of infection. METHODS: A total of 42 ECs were inserted, including 28 Port-A-Caths, 11 CVC lines and 3 Hickman lines. Single ECs were required for 19 patients (45.2%), whereas 2, 3 and 4 ECs were required in 8, 1 and 1 patients, respectively. RESULTS: Overall, 37 culture-documented infections were present in 18 (62%) patients who had ECs. Gram-positive microorganisms were identified in 20 cases, Gram-negative microorganisms in 14 cases and fungal infections in 3 cases. Of the 42 devices implanted, 10 out of 28 Port-A-Caths (35.7%), 2 out of 3 Hickman catheters (66.7%) and 9 out of 11 central venous catheters (81.8%) required removal due to infection. The average length of working life for the ports was 330.6 days (range: 40-1043 days). The median rate of complications due to infection was 2.84 infections per 1000 catheter days (interquartile range: -1.55 to 5.8), and the number of infections was correlated with the number of ports (Pearson's r=0.51; p<0.05).

RESUMO

A selective and sensitive ion chromatographic method has been developed for the determination of beryllium in a number of water samples at low-microg/l concentrations. The separation was performed on a 250x4.0 mm I.D. iminodiacetic acid functionalised silica gel column. Chromatographed Be(II) was detected using visible detection at 590 nm following post-column reaction with chrome azurol S (CAS). The optimum separation and derivatisation conditions were studied in detail. The optimum eluent conditions were found to be 0.4 M KNO3, adjusted to pH 2.5 using HNO3, with optimum post-column detection being achieved using a solution containing 0.26 mM CAS, 2% Triton X-100, 50 mM 2-(N-morpholino)ethanesulfonic acid, pH 6.0. Under the above conditions, the concentration detection limit for Be(II) was found to be 3 microg/l in a standard solution and 4 microg/l in a typical tap water sample, using a 250 microl injection. The method was linear over the investigated range of 10 microg/l to 10 mg/l and highly reproducible. The method was successfully applied to a number of water samples of varying matrix complexity, including simulated seawater, and also to a natural freshwater certified reference material NIST 1640.

RESUMO

The chromatographic behaviour of alkaline earth metals on iminodiacetic acid bonded silica was studied. It was found that the ionic strength of the eluent greatly affected both retention time and selectivity by controlling the extent to which either simple ion exchange or surface complexation was responsible for retention. With a 0.1 M KNO3 eluent, the retention order was Mg(II), Sr(II), Ca(II) and Ba(II), indicating a strong contribution to retention from ion exchange. However, when using a 1.5 M KNO3 eluent, Ba(II) was found to elute first, indicating complexation to be more dominant under these conditions (pH 4.2). The effect of the ionic strength of the sample was also studied and it was found that by matching the eluent cation with that of the sample matrix, efficient separations of alkaline earth metals in 1.0 M NaCl and KCl brines could be obtained without matrix system peaks. Using post-column reaction with o-cresolphthalein complexone, trace levels of Ca(II) and Mg(II) were determined in medicinal NaCl saline solution and laboratory-grade KCl.

RESUMO

An ion-interaction reversed-phase liquid chromatographic method has been developed for the determination of cadmium at low microg/l concentrations in environmental water samples. Cadmium and other matrix metals were separated through on-column complexation with 8-hydroxyquinoline sulphonate, using an octadecylsilica column and a mobile phase containing 15% acetonitrile, 10-13 mM tetrabutylammonium hydroxide, 5 mM 8-hydroxyquinoline 5-sulphonic acid and 10 mM acetic acid-acetate buffer (pH 4.8-5.4). Under the above conditions Cd(II) could be easily resolved from excess concentrations of matrix metals and could be detected at concentrations as low as 2 microg/l using fluorescence detection at 500 nm (based upon a 100-microl injection). The method showed a slightly curved detector response over the range of interest [up to 1 mg/l Cd(II)] and was successfully applied to the determination of trace Cd(II) in water samples containing large excesses of Mg(II) and Zn(II) and other matrix metals.

RESUMO

A simple and sensitive photometric method for the trace determination of 1-naphthylamine has been worked out. The method is based on the coupling reaction of the determinand in acidic medium with diazotized sulfisomidine, to form a purplish violet water-soluble mono azo dye that shows maximum absorption at 540 nm with a molar absorptivity of 4.47 x 10(4) l mol(-1) cm(-1). Beer's law is obeyed over the concentration range 5-70 mug of 1-naphthylamine in a final volume of 25 ml, i.e. 0.2-2.8 p.p.m. with a relative error of -0.7 to +1.7% and a relative standard deviation of 0.35-4.2%, depending on the concentration level. Moreover, the method does not require either temperature control or solvent extraction. Interferences due to foreign species have been examined. The developed method has been applied to the determination of 1-naphthylamine in river water and sea water.

RESUMO

A new and sensitive titrimetric method with an amplification procedure has been worked out for the determination of 10-1000 mug of phenol, resorcinol or phloroglucinol. The method is based on reaction of the phenols with an excess of bromine to form bromosubstituted aryl hypobromites. After removal of excess of bromine with formic acid, the hypobromites are treated with iodide to liberate an equivalent amount of iodine, which is extracted into chloroform, then reduced to iodide and determined by the Leipert procedure with 6-fold amplification. The coefficient of variation does not exceed 0.4% for amounts of determinand > 100 mug, but increases to 1.5% at the 10-mug level.

RESUMO

A titrimetric method with amplification has been worked out for the determination of chloramine-T and certain aldoses. It is based on Leipert determination of iodide produced in the case of chloramine-T by reduction of the determinand with excess of iodide, and extraction and subsequent reduction of the iodine liberated. In the other case, the aldoses are oxidized with iodine, the surplus oxidant is extracted, and the residual iodide is determined. The method is applicable to chloramine-T in the range 0.01-3 mg, with a relative error between -3.0 and -0.4% and a relative standard deviation of 0.6-0.8%, depending on the amount present, and to 0.05-1 mg of glucose, galactose or arabinose, or 0.1-2 mg of lactose or maltose, with a relative standard deviation of 1.4% for > 0.5 mg of aldose.

RESUMO

A new sensitive colour reaction for nitrite determination is presented. The method is based on the reaction of nitrite with p-aminobenzoic acid to form a diazonium ion, which is coupled with 8-hydroxyquinoline, in alkaline medium, to form a reddish-orange water-soluble azo dye. Diazotization and coupling are very fast and control of temperature is unnecessary. Moreover, the colour is stable and its intensity is in direct proportion to nitrite concentration over a wide range.
