RESUMO

This study aimed to geochemically investigate the sediments of the south Caspian Sea at different depths in summer and winter 2020. Sampling was conducted in 5 transects along the south coastline of the Caspian Sea and sediment grain size, hydrogen sulfide, Oxidation-reduction potential (Eh), total nitrogen, nitrite, nitrate, ammonium, total phosphorus, organic and inorganic phosphorous were measured. Eh values showed significant differences between seasons and between different transects (p < 0.05). Hydrogen sulfide ranged from 1.87 to 307.00 ppm. No significant difference was observed in hydrogen sulfide between seasons and among depths (p > 0.05). Total, inorganic and organic phosphorus contents were 782.96-1335.79 ppm, 639.66-1183.60 ppm, and 42.58-205.46 ppm, respectively. Total nitrogen revealed significant differences among transects (p < 0.05). Based on sediment quality guidelines, most sampling sites had alerting conditions for organic matter, and phosphorous contamination was detected at all stations. Anoxic condition was seen at most sites according to sedimentary Eh.

RESUMO

The concentrations of heavy metals (Cr, Cd, Ni, and Pb) were investigated in sediment and cyprinid fish (Capoeta razii) from Telar River, Iran in spring, summer, and autumn. Mean concentration of metals in fish and sediment over the seasonal sampling was as follows: Cr > Ni > Pb > Cd. Metal deposition in sediment was higher than their bioaccumulation in fish tissue. Unlike sedimentary metals, the tissue-content of Pb and Cr varied seasonally. Enrichment Factor (EF) values of Cr and Ni showed partial enrichment, implicating the role of anthropogenic inputs, while Pb was derived from natural weathering. When considering Pollution Load Index (PLI), an uneven temporal and spatial distribution of contamination was observed in sediment with moderate contamination level in spring and summer and no pollution in autumn. Tissue-contents of Pb, Cr, and Cd were below permissible limits while a higher risk level of Ni was noted for human consumption.

RESUMO

This investigation aimed to determine the contents of biogenic SiO2 and different phosphorus forms (P) and to evaluate phosphorus ecological risk in surface sediment of Anzali wetland. According to the results, biogenic SiO2 ranged from 0.29 to 3.04%. Also, the average biogenic SiO2 at all studied stations was 1.36 ± 0.83%. Results indicated that total P (TP) was between 493 and 771 ppm, averaged 637.20 ± 79.41 ppm. Moreover, inorganic P (INTP) ranged from 256.63 to 376.89 ppm and composed 51.46 ± 4.68% of total P. The percentage of P-forms was in descending order: residual-P > Fe-P > Ca-P > Al-P > labile-P. Phosphorus pollution index (PPI) ranged from 0.82 to 1.29, with an average of 1.06 in the sediment of the Anzali wetland. The Sediment P saturation (SPS) values varied considerably from 40.96 to 83.57, with an average SPS value of 49.1. Based on the eutrophication risk index, all stations except one had a low eutrophication risk index.

RESUMO

We investigated the bioavailability, mobility, and origin of heavy metals present in sediments from the Anzali Wetland. Chemical speciation of the metals was performed according to the Tessier method. Results indicated that Cd and As showed the highest level of bioavailability, whereas Cr showed the lowest level. Cr, Co, and V were shown to have a terrestrial origin. The metal As was mostly found in the reducible fraction (F3), whereas other metals were highest in the residual phase. The levels of Co present in the oxidizable fraction (F4); Pb and Cd present in the carbonate fraction (F2); and the other metals present in the exchangeable fraction (F1) were found to be the lowest. On the basis of the Risk Assessment Code of metals, Cd at most stations, As and Ni at some stations, and Zn at one station revealed to have a moderate risk. Co and Pb were found to have a low risk at all stations. Considering Pollution Load Index, stations 2 and 3 were classified as moderately polluted and the remaining stations were unpolluted. As suggested by enrichment factor analysis, As was moderately enriched and other metals had a deficiency to minimal enrichment at all the stations.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to quantify phosphorus bioavailability and various forms of this element in surface sediments of the southern Caspian Sea. To do, sediment samples were collected from different depths in autumn 2015 using a Van Veen Grab. Phosphorus forms were recognized by a sequential extraction procedure (SEDEX). Results revealed that the range of total phosphorus (TP) was between 431ppm and 594ppm with a mean value of 535.25±45.05ppm. Organic phosphorus (OP) ranged from 62 to 99ppm and contributed 14.85±2.21% of total phosphorus in average. The contents of loosely phosphorus, iron-bound phosphorus, authigenic phosphorus and detrital phosphorus varied 35-55ppm, 50-94ppm, 125-189ppm and 152-217ppm, respectively. Generally, inorganic phosphorus (IP) was between 365 and 522ppm which comprised 81.9-88.53% of total phosphorus. Findings showed levels of different phosphorus forms in a descending order: detrital P>Authigenic P>Organic P>Fe-P>Loosely P. Bioavailable phosphorus concentration was between 153ppm and 240ppm and consisted 37.21±3% of total phosphorus. Based on molar ratio of TOC/OP, organic matter obtained from the studied stations suggested a terrestrial origin.

RESUMO

In the present study, the concentrations and distribution of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the water and surface sediments from the Chabahar Bay, Oman Sea, were investigated in May (premonsoon) and December (postmonsoon) 2012. The concentrations of PAHs in the surface water samples ranged from 1.7 to 2.8ngl-1 and from 0.04 to 59.6ngl-1 in pre- and postmonsoon, respectively. In general, the PAH levels of the water samples from Chabahar Bay were higher in postmonsoon than in premonsoon (p<0.05). The concentrations of PAHs in the sediment samples varied from undetectable levels to 92.8ngg-1 d.w. in both seasons. The seasonal comparison of the results in sediment samples showed that the overall concentration of PAH compounds was higher in the postmonsoon season (p<0.05).

RESUMO

In the present study, the concentrations of metals in sediments along the coastline of the southern Caspian Sea were investigated. For this purpose, sediments were collected from 13 sampling sites in the southern Caspian Sea. The samples were then analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry. Results showed that compound oxides may be responsible for the distribution of metals in the sediments of the southern Caspian Sea. According to mean effects range-median quotient, 61.5% of the studied sites from the southern Caspian Sea had a 21% probability of metal toxicity. On the basis of the enrichment factor, all metals were in the category of deficiency to minimal enrichment. Pollution load index showed that the other sampling sites had no pollution.

RESUMO

Geochemical speciation of As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, V and Zn were determined in the surface sediments of the southern Caspian Sea. A five-step sequential extraction technique was used to determine the chemical forms of metals. Mean concentrations (ppm) of heavy metals were (mean±S.D.) As: 9.94±1.71, Cd: 0.87±0.23, Co: 14.85±2.80, Cr: 72.29±19.48, Cu: 18.91±4.48, Ni: 32.87±5.25, Pb: 12.48±3.22, V: 86.07±20.71 and Zn: 66.85±10.11. Among the metals, Cu, As, Pb and Zn exhibited relatively higher mobility, while Cd, Co, Cr, Ni and V were found mainly in the residual fractions. Cu and As showed the highest percentages in the exchangeable phase while Co and Cr had the lowest percentages in the phase. The Risk Assessment Code (RAC) values indicated that As, Cu and V had medium risk at some sampling sites. According to pollution load index (PLI), sediments from some sampling sites were polluted.

RESUMO

In this study, the accumulation of metals, including Al, Fe, Zn, V, Ni, Cu, Cr, Cd, Co, As, and Pb, in sediments of Anzali wetland in the southwest region of the Caspian Sea was investigated. For this purpose, the sediments were collected from 17 sampling sites in Anzali wetland, Caspian Sea. The samples were then analyzed using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Pearson correlation coefficient showed significant and positive correlation between concentration of all metals (except As and Cd). Furthermore, the results implied that Al and Fe are probably responsible for the transportation of heavy metals into the sediments of Anzali wetland. According to mean effects range-median quotient (mean ERM quotient), the sediments from Anzali wetland had a 21% probability of toxicity.

RESUMO

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined in the surface sediments and in the sea cucumbers (Holothuria leucospilota and Stichopus hermanni) from around six Islands in the northern parts of Persian Gulf. The ranges of the average concentrations of PAHs in surface sediments, H. leucospilota and S. hermanni were 10.33-186.16ngg(-1) dw, 12.49-505.44ngg(-1) dw and 8.08-389.39ngg(-1) dw, respectively. The spatial distribution of PAHs reveals that pollutant concentration is relatively higher at the western parts of Persian Gulf. International sedimentary quality guidelines (TEL-PEL) indicated a low probability of harmful effects to benthic organisms. PAH source identification showed that the PAHs in the sediments come from pyrogenic and mixed origin.

RESUMO

The concentrations of some heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd) were investigated in the sediments and in the mullet Liza klunzingeri from the northern part of the Persian Gulf. The levels of Cu, Zn and Pb in the sediment varied significantly among the sampling sites (P<0.05). Sediments from the northern part of the Persian Gulf had serious ecological risk when considering PER. The ranges of the average concentrations of Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd in the tissue of L. klunzingeri were 10.00-16.66 mg/kg, 18.75-32.50 mg/kg, 3.25-14.16 mg/kg and 0.37-3.33 mg/kg, respectively. The health risk analysis of individual heavy metals in the fish tissue indicated dangerous levels of Pb and Cd for the general population at some sampling sites.

RESUMO

This study aimed to evaluate major elements and heavy metal concentrations of Arsenic (As), Copper (Cu), Chromium (Cr), Cobalt (Co), Vanadium (V), Nickel (Ni), lead (Pb) and Zinc (Zn) in surface sediments of the southern Caspian Sea. Metal contents in the sediment were observed in the order of: V>Cr>Zn>Ni>Co>Cu>Pb>As. Correlations between elements showed that sediment TOM, grain size and chemical composition are the main factors that influence the distribution of heavy metals. According to the pollution load index (PLI), sediments from some sampling sites were polluted. Concentrations of Ni, As, Cr and Cu were higher than sediment quality guidelines at some sampling sites, implying potential adverse impacts of these metals.

RESUMO

The level and source of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were investigated in the surface sediments from the Gorgan Bay, Caspian Sea. The sum of 16 PAHs (ΣPAH16) concentrations varied from 107.87 to 516.18 ng g(-1)dry weight, with average value of 270.96 ± 150.47 ng g(-1)dry weight. Ecological risk assessment of PAHs, indicated that adverse biological effects caused by acenaphthene, naphthalene, fluoranthene and Pyrene occasionally and frequently may take place in the sediments of Gorgan Bay. PAHs source identification demonstrated that the PAHs come from mixed and pyrogenic origin.
