RESUMO

The (over)consumption of alcohol and other addictive substances is often conceptualized as a problem of low self-control (i.e., people's inability to inhibit unwanted impulses). According to that view, people drink because they cannot resist. In the present studies, we approached this from a different perspective and tested whether alcohol consumption might also be a problem of low hedonic capacity (i.e., people's inability to experience pleasure and relaxation, often due to intrusive thoughts). According to that view, people drink because it helps them enjoy or cope with negative thoughts or emotions. In two studies among individuals at low risk of harmful alcohol use (e.g., AUDIT < 7) we consistently found that trait hedonic capacity was unrelated to alcohol consumption but negatively related to coping motivation (drinking alcohol to cope with negative thoughts and feelings; Study 1: N = 348; Study 2: N = 302, preregistered). Exploratory analyses in study 2 (conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic) also showed that people with low, but not high, trait hedonic capacity drank more alcohol in response to stress. Our findings are in line with the notion that people's drinking motivation and behavior might not only be a problem of poor self-control but also of low trait hedonic capacity. They align with a new direction in addiction prevention and treatment research, which explores ways to help people to seek out and savor hedonic experiences from non-drug related reinforcers (e.g., engaging in leisure activities).

RESUMO

In this commentary we challenge Fitouchi et al.'s puritanical morality account by presenting evidence showing (1) that pursuing harmless pleasures can actually support self-regulation, and (2) that sharing pleasurable experiences can foster cooperation. We conclude that puritanical morality is not as adaptive as presented, and may even suppress the potential benefits pleasure can have for the individual and society.

RESUMO

This paper examines the role of hedonic goal pursuit in self-control and self-regulation. We argue that not all pursuit of immediate pleasure is problematic and that successful hedonic goal pursuit can be beneficial for long-term goal pursuit and for achieving positive self-regulatory outcomes, such as health and well-being. The following two key questions for future research are discussed: How can people's positive affective experiences during hedonic goal pursuit be enhanced, and how exactly do those affective experiences contribute to self-regulatory outcomes? We also call for an intercultural perspective linking hedonic goal pursuit to self-regulatory outcomes at different levels. We suggest that understanding the cognitive, motivational, and affective mechanisms at play can help individuals reap the benefits of successful hedonic goal pursuit. Considering those potential benefits, hedonic goal pursuit should be studied more systematically. To achieve this, we argue for a stronger integration of affective science and self-control research.

Research suggests that people's capacity to successfully pursue hedonic goals is at least as important for well-being as trait self-control. Extending this research, we tested whether trait hedonic capacity is related to more time spent with hedonic goal pursuit (i.e., hedonic quantity) and whether this explains its positive relationship with well-being. Second, we explored whether this may come at a cost for people's performance. Results show that people with higher trait hedonic capacity do spend more time with hedonic goal pursuit (Study 1 and 2). However, hedonic quality not hedonic quantity accounts for its positive relationship with well-being. Further, people higher vs. lower in trait hedonic capacity perform equally well in their studies (Study 2) and their jobs (Study 3 and 4). Thus, trait hedonic capacity seems to allow people to invest more time into their hedonic goals in a way that does not jeopardize their academic and job performance.

Brewer's spent grain (BSG) is a major by-product of the brewing industry which is generated in high amounts. In recent years, sustainable food production has become more and more important. BSG mainly used as cattle feed has gained high interest due to not only its valuable ingredients such as fiber and proteins but also secondary metabolites remaining in BSG after the brewing process and known for many biological effects. In the present study, various methods were applied, such as acetone extraction (A), alkaline hydrolysis followed by ethyl acetate extraction (HE), and acetone extraction of alkaline hydrolysis residue (HA). Compounds present in the respective bioactive extracts were characterized by mass spectrometry to identify the active compounds. Various hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives as well as oxylipins and some dicarboxylic acids, such as azelaic acid, were present in HE and HA extracts. In contrast, some catechins and phenolamides, such as numerous hordatines, as well as oxylipins and phospholipids were detected in A extracts. Quantification using HPLC-DAD revealed hordatine contents up to 172.2 ± 2.1 µg p-coumaric acid equivalents/mg extract. Hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives content accounted for up to 48% of the total extract (HE extracts) but only around 3% of the total HA extracts. In summary, all extracts contained secondary plant metabolites belonging to different classes, ranging from hydroxycinnamic acids to phenolamides, such as not only hordatines but also oxylipins, which were identified for the first time in BSG.

PURPOSE: Fiber tracking (FT) is used in neurosurgical planning for the resection of lesions in proximity to fiber pathways, as it contributes to a substantial amelioration of postoperative neurological impairments. Currently, diffusion-tensor imaging (DTI)-based FT is the most frequently used technique; however, sophisticated techniques such as Q-ball (QBI) for high-resolution FT (HRFT) have suggested favorable results. Little is known about the reproducibility of both techniques in the clinical setting. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the intra- and interrater agreement for the depiction of white matter pathways such as the corticospinal tract (CST) and the optic radiation (OR). METHODS: Nineteen patients with eloquent lesions in the proximity of the OR or CST were prospectively enrolled. Two different raters independently reconstructed the fiber bundles by applying probabilistic DTI- and QBI-FT. Interrater agreement was evaluated from the comparison between results obtained by the two raters on the same data set acquired in two independent iterations at different timepoints using the Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) and the Jaccard Coefficient (JC). Likewise, intrarater agreement was determined for each rater comparing individual results. RESULTS: DSC values showed substantial intrarater agreement based on DTI-FT (rater 1: mean 0.77 (0.68-0.85); rater 2: mean 0.75 (0.64-0.81); p = 0.673); while an excellent agreement was observed after the deployment of QBI-based FT (rater 1: mean 0.86 (0.78-0.98); rater 2: mean 0.80 (0.72-0.91); p = 0.693). In contrast, fair agreement was observed between both measures for the repeatability of the OR of each rater based on DTI-FT (rater 1: mean 0.36 (0.26-0.77); rater 2: mean 0.40 (0.27-0.79), p = 0.546). A substantial agreement between the measures was noted by applying QBI-FT (rater 1: mean 0.67 (0.44-0.78); rater 2: mean 0.62 (0.32-0.70), 0.665). The interrater agreement was moderate for the reproducibility of the CST and OR for both DSC and JC based on DTI-FT (DSC and JC ≥ 0.40); while a substantial interrater agreement was noted for DSC after applying QBI-based FT for the delineation of both fiber tracts (DSC > 0.6). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that QBI-based FT might be a more robust tool for the visualization of the OR and CST adjacent to intracerebral lesions compared with the common standard DTI-FT. For neurosurgical planning during the daily workflow, QBI appears to be feasible and less operator-dependent.

Analyzing microbial communities using metagenomes is a powerful approach to understand compositional structures and functional connections in anaerobic digestion (AD) microbiomes. Whereas short-read sequencing approaches based on the Illumina platform result in highly fragmented metagenomes, long-read sequencing leads to more contiguous assemblies. To evaluate the performance of a hybrid approach of these two sequencing approaches we compared the metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) resulting from five AD microbiome samples. The samples were taken from reactors fed with short-chain fatty acids at different feeding regimes (continuous and discontinuous) and organic loading rates (OLR). Methanothrix showed a high relative abundance at all feeding regimes but was strongly reduced in abundance at higher OLR, when Methanosarcina took over. The bacterial community composition differed strongly between reactors of different feeding regimes and OLRs. However, the functional potential was similar regardless of feeding regime and OLR. The hybrid sequencing approach using Nanopore long-reads and Illumina MiSeq reads improved assembly statistics, including an increase of the N50 value (on average from 32 to 1740 kbp) and an increased length of the longest contig (on average from 94 to 1898 kbp). The hybrid approach also led to a higher share of high-quality MAGs and generated five potentially circular genomes while none were generated using MiSeq-based contigs only. Finally, 27 hybrid MAGs were reconstructed of which 18 represent potentially new species-15 of them bacterial species. During pathway analysis, selected MAGs revealed similar gene patterns of butyrate degradation and might represent new butyrate-degrading bacteria. The demonstrated advantages of adding long reads to metagenomic analyses make the hybrid approach the preferable option when dealing with complex microbiomes.

This series sought to evaluate the role of intraoperative MRI (iMRI) for resection of functional pituitary adenomas (FPAs). We retrospectively reviewed clinical data of 114 consecutive FPAs with excessive hormone secretion treated with transsphenoidal surgery and iMRI during 01/2010-12/2017. We focused on iMRI findings, extend of resection and postoperative hormonal remission. Variables of incomplete resections and persistent hormone excess were evaluated by binary regression. Patients with FPAs presented with hypercortisolism (n = 23, 20%), acromegaly (n = 56, 49%), and as prolactinomas (n = 35, 31%) resistant to medical treatment. Preoperative MRI showed 81 macroadenomas (71%) and optic system involvement in 41 cases (36%). IMRI was suggestive for residual tumor in 51 cases (45%). Re-inspection of the cavity cleared equivocal findings in 16 cases (14%). Additional tumor was removed in 22 cases (19%). Complete resection was achieved in 95 cases (83%). Postoperative morbidity was low (1.7% revision surgeries, 0.8% permanent diabetes insipidus). Overall hormonal remission-rate was 59% (hypercortisolism 78%, acromegaly 52%, prolactinoma 57%). Supra- and parasellar invasion and preoperative visual impairment were significant predictors for incomplete resections despite use of iMRI. Risk for persistent hormone excess was increased sevenfold after incomplete resections. IMRI enabled reliable identification of tumor remnants during surgery and triggered further resection in a considerable proportion of cases. Nevertheless, tumor size and invasiveness set persistent boundaries to the completeness of resections. The low rate of surgical complications could point at a less invasive iMRI-guided surgical approach while achieving a complete tumor resection was a crucial determinant for hormonal outcome.

OBJECTIVE: Fiber tractography (FT) has become an important noninvasive tool to ensure maximal safe tumor resection in eloquent glioma surgery. Intraoperatively applied FT is still predominantly based on diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). However, reconstruction schemes of high angular resolution diffusion imaging data for high-resolution FT (HRFT) are gaining increasing attention. The aim of this prospective study was to compare the accuracy of sophisticated HRFT models compared with DTI-FT. METHODS: Ten patients with eloquent gliomas underwent surgery under awake craniotomy conditions. The localization of acquisition points, representing deteriorations during intraoperative electrostimulation (IOM) and neuropsychological mapping, were documented. The offsets of acquisition points to the respective fiber bundle were calculated. Probabilistic Q-ball imaging (QBI) and constrained spherical deconvolution (CSD)-FT were compared with DTI-FT for the major language-associated fiber bundles (superior longitudinal fasciculus [SLF] II-IV, inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus, and inferior longitudinal fasciculus/medial longitudinal fasciculus). RESULTS: Among 186 offset values, 46% were located closer than 10 mm to the estimated fiber bundle (CSD, 36%; DTI, 40% and QBI, 60%). Moreover, only 10 offsets were further away than 30 mm (5%). Lowest mean minimum offsets (SLF, 7.7 ± 7.9 mm; inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus, 12.7 ± 8.3 mm; inferior longitudinal fasciculus/medial longitudinal fasciculus, 17.7 ± 6.7 mm) were found for QBI, indicating a significant advantage compared with CSD or DTI (P < 0.001), respectively. No significant differences were found between CSD-FT and DTI-FT offsets (P = 0.105), albeit for the compound SLF exclusively (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Comparing HRFT techniques QBI and CSD with DTI, QBI delivered significantly better results with lowest offsets and good correlation to IOM results. Besides, QBI-FT was feasible for neurosurgical preoperative and intraoperative applications. Our findings suggest that a combined approach of QBI-FT and IOM under awake craniotomy is considerable for best preservation of neurological function in the presented setting. Overall, the implementation of selected HRFT models into neuronavigation systems seems to be a promising tool in glioma surgery.

With a yearly production of about 39 million tons, brewer's spent grain (BSG) is the most abundant brewing industry byproduct. Because it is rich in fiber and protein, it is commonly used as cattle feed but could also be used within the human diet. Additionally, it contains many bioactive substances such as hydroxycinnamic acids that are known to be antioxidants and potent inhibitors of enzymes of glucose metabolism. Therefore, our study aim was to prepare different extracts-A1-A7 (solid-liquid extraction with 60% acetone); HE1-HE6 (alkaline hydrolysis followed by ethyl acetate extraction) and HA1-HA3 (60% acetone extraction of alkaline residue)-from various BSGs which were characterized for their total phenolic (TPC) and total flavonoid (TFC) contents, before conducting in vitro studies on their effects on the glucose metabolism enzymes α-amylase, α-glucosidase, dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP IV), and glycogen phosphorylase α (GPα). Depending on the extraction procedures, TPCs ranged from 20-350 µg gallic acid equivalents/mg extract and TFCs were as high as 94 µg catechin equivalents/mg extract. Strong inhibition of glucose metabolism enzymes was also observed: the IC50 values for α-glucosidase inhibition ranged from 67.4 ± 8.1 µg/mL to 268.1 ± 29.4 µg/mL, for DPP IV inhibition they ranged from 290.6 ± 97.4 to 778.4 ± 95.5 µg/mL and for GPα enzyme inhibition from 12.6 ± 1.1 to 261 ± 6 µg/mL. However, the extracts did not strongly inhibit α-amylase. In general, the A extracts from solid-liquid extraction with 60% acetone showed stronger inhibitory potential towards a-glucosidase and GPα than other extracts whereby no correlation with TPC or TFC were observed. Additionally, DPP IV was mainly inhibited by HE extracts but the effect was not of biological relevance. Our results show that BSG is a potent source of α-glucosidase and GPα inhibitors, but further research is needed to identify these bioactive compounds within BSG extracts focusing on extracts from solid-liquid extraction with 60% acetone.

Behavior toward appetitive stimuli can be changed by motor response training procedures in which participants approach or respond to some stimuli and avoid or inhibit behavior to other stimuli. There is discussion in the literature whether effects are different when participants approach versus avoid stimuli during approach-avoidance training compared to when they respond versus not respond to stimuli during go/no-go training. Here, we directly compared effects of approach-avoidance training and go/no-go training on food choice within the same rigorous experimental protocol. Results showed that both training procedures influence food choice such that participants preferred Approach over Avoidance food items, and Go over NoGo food items, and these training effects were not statistically different. The present work suggests any inconsistencies in the literature on possible differences in effectiveness of these training procedures may be explained by differences in methods employed. The present work also raises new theoretical and applied questions about motor response training as a means to change behavior.

Self-control helps to align behavior with long-term goals (e.g., exercising to stay fit) and shield it from conflicting hedonic goals (e.g., relaxing). Decades of research have shown that self-control is associated with numerous positive outcomes, such as well-being. In the present article, we argue that hedonic goal pursuit is equally important for well-being, and that conflicting long-term goals can undermine it in the form of intrusive thoughts. In Study 1, we developed a measure of trait hedonic capacity, which captures people's success in hedonic goal pursuit and the occurrence of intrusive thoughts. In Studies 2A and 2B, people's trait hedonic capacity relates positively to well-being. Study 3 confirms intrusive thoughts as major impeding mechanism of hedonic success. Studies 4 and 5 demonstrate that trait hedonic capacity predicts successful hedonic goal pursuit in everyday life. We conclude that hedonic goal pursuit represents a largely neglected but adaptive aspect of self-regulation.

Metagenomics analysis revealing the composition and functional repertoire of complex microbial communities typically relies on large amounts of sequence data. Numerous analysis strategies and computational tools are available for their analysis. Fully integrated automated analysis pipelines such as MG-RAST or MEGAN6 are user-friendly but not designed for integrating specific knowledge on the biological system under study. In order to facilitate the consideration of such knowledge, we introduce a modular, adaptable analysis pipeline combining existing tools. We applied the novel pipeline to simulated mock data sets focusing on anaerobic digestion microbiomes and compare results to those obtained with established automated analysis pipelines. We find that the analysis strategy and choice of tools and parameters have a strong effect on the inferred taxonomic community composition, but not on the inferred functional profile. By including prior knowledge, computational costs can be decreased while improving result accuracy. While automated off-the-shelf analysis pipelines are easy to apply and require no knowledge on the microbial system under study, custom-made pipelines require more preparation time and bioinformatics expertise. This extra effort is minimized by our modular, flexible, custom-made pipeline, which can be adapted to different scenarios and can take available knowledge on the microbial system under study into account.

OBJECTIVE: As a result of the resolution of intravoxel fiber crossing, high-resolution fiber tractography (HRFT) provides advantages over conventional diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) for fiber tractography (FT). Nevertheless, neurosurgically applied FT is still predominantly based on DTI. Although the application of HRFT is evolving, there is still a lack of data about which method should be preferred. With this prospectively designed study, we present our initial experience comparing an analytical Q-ball imaging (QBI) approach with constrained spherical deconvolution (CSD) and conventional DTI-FT considering a particularly neurosurgical perspective. METHODS: For 18 patients with eloquent gliomas in the dominant hemisphere, probabilistic FT based on QBI, CSD, and DTI was performed for the major components of the language-associated pathways using a routine diffusion-weighted sequence. Quantitative analysis evaluated tract density, tract volume (TV), tract length (TL), number of fibers, and tract surface (TS) of the fiber object. RESULTS: Both HRFT models showed a significantly larger mean TV, TL, and TS compared with DTI (for QBI vs. DTI: TV (P = 0.0000), TL (P = 0.0048), and TS (P = 0.0129); for CSD vs. DTI: TV (P = 0.0000), TL (P = 0.0008), and TS (P = 0.0010)). However, results of QBI versus CSD did not differ significantly for these variables: TV (P = 0.1415), TL (P = 0.2837), and TS (P = 0.3692). Bland-Altman analysis supports these findings, suggesting systematically higher values for TV, TL, and TS with HRFT but no relevant differences of either QBI or CSD. Neither tumor volume nor peritumoral edema influenced FT results. CONCLUSIONS: Our quantitative analysis showed no significant differences regarding TV, TL, and TS for the HRFT methods; however, it suggested advantages over DTI-FT in terms of the display of marginal and terminal fibers. In our recently established setting, QBI-FT shows greater potential for integration into the clinical workflow.

BACKGROUND: To date, fiber tractography (FT) is predominantly based on Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI). High angular resolution diffusion imaging (HARDI)-based reconstructions have become a focus of interest, enabling the resolution of intravoxel fiber crossing. However, experience with high resolution tractography (HRFT) for neurosurgical applications is still limited to a few reports. This prospectively designed feasibility study shares our initial experience using an analytical q-ball approach (QBI) for FT of language-associated pathways in comparison with DTI-FT, focussing on a quantitative analysis and evaluation of its applicability in clinical routine. METHODS: Probabilistic QBI-, and DTI-FT were performed for the major components of the language-associated fiber bundles (superior longitudinal fasciculus, inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus, medial/inferior longitudinal faciculus) in 11 patients with eloquent gliomas. The data was derived from a routine DWI sequence (b=1000s/mm2, 64 gradient directions). Quantitative analysis evaluated tract volume (TV), tract length (TL) and tract density (TD). Results were correlated to tumor and edema size. RESULTS: Quantitative analysis showed larger TV and TL of the overall fiber object using QBI-FT compared with DTI-FT (TV: 16.45 ± 1.85 vs. 10.07 ± 1.15cm3; p<0.0001; TL:81.95 ± 6.14 vs. 72.06 ± 6.92 mm; p=0.0011). Regarding overall TD, DTI delivered significantly higher values (40.57 ± 6.59 vs. 60.98 ± 15.94 points/voxel; p=0.0118). Bland-Altman analysis illustrated a systematic advantage to yield lager TV and TL via QBI compared with DTI for all reconstructed pathways. The results were independent of tumor or edema volume. CONCLUSIONS: QBI proved to be suitable for an application in the neurosurgical setting without additional expense for the patient. Quantitative analysis of FT reveals larger overall TV, longer TL with lower TD using QBI compared with DTI, suggesting the better depiction of marginal and terminal fibers according to neuroanatomical knowledge. This emphasizes the known limitation of DTI to underestimate the dimensions of a pathway. Rather than relying on DTI, sophisticated HRFT techniques should be considered for preoperative planning and intraoperative guidance in selected cases of eloquent glioma surgery.

For biogas-producing continuous stirred tank reactors, an increase in dilution rate increases the methane production rate as long as substrate input can be converted fully. However, higher dilution rates necessitate higher specific microbial growth rates, which are assumed to have a strong impact on the apparent microbial biomass yield due to cellular maintenance. To test this, we operated two reactors at 37°C in parallel at dilution rates of 0.18 and 0.07 days-1 (hydraulic retention times of 5.5 and 14 days, doubling times of 3.9 and 9.9 days in steady state) with identical inoculum and a mixture of volatile fatty acids as sole carbon sources. We evaluated the performance of the Anaerobic Digestion Model No. 1 (ADM1), a thermodynamic black box approach (TBA), and dynamic flux balance analysis (dFBA), to describe the experimental observations. All models overestimated the impact of dilution rate on the apparent microbial biomass yield when using default parameter values. Based on our analysis, a maintenance coefficient value below 0.2 kJ per carbon mole of microbial biomass per hour should be used for the TBA, corresponding to 0.12 mmol ATP per gram dry weight per hour for dFBA, which strongly deviates from the value of 9.8 kJ Cmol h-1 that has been suggested to apply to all anaerobic microorganisms at 37°C. We hypothesized that a decrease in dilution rate might select taxa with minimized maintenance expenditure. However, no major differences in the dominating taxa between the reactors were observed based on amplicon sequencing of 16S rRNA genes and terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of mcrA genes. Surprisingly, Methanosaeta dominated over Methanosarcina even at a dilution rate of 0.18 days-1, which contradicts previous model expectations. Furthermore, only 23-49% of the bacterial reads could be assigned to known syntrophic fatty acid oxidizers, indicating that unknown members of this functional group remain to be discovered. In conclusion, microbial maintenance was found to be much lower for acetogenesis and methanogenesis than previously assumed, likely due to the exceptionally low growth rates in anaerobic digestion. This finding might also be relevant for other microbial systems operating at similarly low growth rates.

The living conditions of the prison population favors the spread of often asymptomatic infectious diseases which can be taken to the community. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of syphilis, HIV, hepatitis B and C, as well as possible co-infections among prison inmates in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul. We conducted a cross-sectional study of records of serological analyses of the Regional Prison of Santa Cruz do Sul, state of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) performed between January 2016 and June 2017. Data were obtained from files of the 13th Regional Laboratory of Santa Cruz do Sul. We included in the study all serological records obtained regarding the following diseases: syphilis, HIV, and hepatitis B and C. We analyzed data from 349 convicts with the mean age of 31 (± 8.56) years, ranging from 18 to 59 years, with the predominance of males 86%. Positive results: 6% for syphilis, 4.9% for HIV, and 8.3% for hepatitis C. Regarding hepatitis B the data obtained were 86% of subjects were susceptible to the virus, 1.1% were in the acute phase, 1.4% in chronic phase, 5.7% with past infection and 2.2% in immunological window period. Co-infections detected were: 0.3% (n = 1) syphilis/hepatitis C, 0.6% (n = 2) HIV/ hepatitis B, and 0.9% (n = 3) HIV/hepatitis C and HIV/syphilis. The prison environment provides data from a population at high risk for spread of infectious diseases and we found a high prevalence in this study. Combative measures such as information, identification and treatment are urgent to prevent the spread of these diseases


As condições de vida da população prisional favorecem a disseminação de doenças infecciosas muitas vezes assintomáticas que podem ser disseminadas à comunidade. O objetivo desse trabalho foi estimar a prevalência de sífilis, HIV, hepatite B e C, bem como possíveis co-infecções em população prisional de presídio na região central do Rio Grande do Sul. Trata-se de um estudo descritivo transversal dos registros de análises sorológicas de apenados do Presídio Regional de Santa Cruz do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, realizadas entre janeiro de 2016 e junho de 2017. Os dados foram obtidos dos registros do 13º Laboratório Regional de Santa Cruz do Sul. No estudo foram incluídos todos os registros sorológicos obtidos referentes às seguintes doenças: sífilis, HIV e hepatites B e C. Foram analisados dados de 349 apenados com idade média de 31 (± 8,56) anos, variando de 18 a 59 anos, com predomínio do sexo masculino 86%. Resultados positivos: 6% para sífilis, 4,9% para HIV e 8,3% para hepatite C. Com relação a hepatite B obteve-se 86% dos indivíduos suscetíveis ao vírus, 1,1% em fase aguda, 1,4% em fase crônica, 5,7% como infecção passada e 2,2% na fase de janela imunológica. As co-infecções diagnosticadas foram: sífilis/hepatite C, 0,3% (n = 1); HIV/hepatite B, 0,6% (n = 2) e HIV/hepatite C e sífilis/HIV ambas com prevalência de 0,9% (n = 3). O ambiente prisional fornece dados de uma população de alto risco para disseminação de doenças infecciosas e encontramos alta prevalência neste estudo. Medidas de combate como informação, identificação e tratamento são urgentes para evitar a disseminação destas doenças

Solving a conflict between two response options in an interference task has been found to increase control in a subsequent conflict situation. The present research examined whether such conflict adaptation persists in the presence of distractors that have motivational relevance and are therefore competing for attentional resources (i.e. they signal opportunities for monetary gains or losses contingent on overall task performance). In an adjusted flanker task, motivational (versus neutral versus no) distractors were presented together with the current trial while the previous trial never included any distractor. Accumulated evidence across three studies showed that motivational distractors reduced the conflict adaptation effect. This was found irrespective of the location at which the distractor occurred (Study 1), and independent of its valence (i.e. reward or loss, Study 2). Study 3 and a merged data analysis ruled out low-level alternative explanations. In line with a dual competition account (Pessoa, L. (2009). How do emotion and motivation direct executive control? We discuss whether this should be interpreted as a limitation, or as reflecting the flexibility of the control system in dealing with motivationally relevant information.

People often experience self-control conflicts (i.e., feel tempted to indulge while motivated to resist). But, how do people feel after making such conflicted self-control choices? Whereas previous research has focused almost exclusively on the influence of choice outcomes (healthy vs. unhealthy) on emotional reactions (e.g., pride vs. guilt), we propose that the experience of conflict during decision making could have a unique influence, possibly fueling negative emotions (i.e., regret) regardless of people's choice outcomes. To test this, we studied immediate consequences of people's experience of conflict during self-control decision making (healthy vs. unhealthy food choice) on self-conscious emotions (i.e., guilt, regret, or pride), choice satisfaction and future behavior. Across 5 studies (vignette, field, and experience sampling), we found a link between self-control conflict and negativity: the more difficulty (proxy of conflict, Studies 1 and 2) or conflict (Studies 3 and 5) participants experienced during self-control decision making, the more negative they felt about their choice afterward. This was the case for unhealthy as well as healthy choices. Specifically, self-control conflict strength was associated with increased levels of guilt and regret (but not pride), with lower satisfaction and with lowered odds of making a similar choice in the future (Studies 1 to 3). Studies 4 and 5 suggested that conflict strength can boost pride after healthy choices, but only if participants first appraised their choice as acts of self-control. Our findings, therefore, highlight the costs as well as the potential benefits of experiencing conflict during self-control decision making. Generating chemical energy carriers and bulk chemicals from solar energy by microbial metabolic capacities is a promising technology. In this long-term study of over 500 days, methane was produced by a microbial community that was fed by the mono-substrate glycolate, which was derived from engineered algae. The microbial community structure was measured on the single cell level using flow cytometry. Abiotic and operational reactor parameters were analyzed in parallel. The R-based tool flowCyBar facilitated visualization of community dynamics and indicated sub-communities involved in glycolate fermentation and methanogenesis. Cell sorting and amplicon sequencing of 16S rRNA and mcrA genes were used to identify the key organisms involved in the anaerobic conversion process. The microbial community allowed a constant fermentation, although it was sensitive to high glycolate concentrations in the feed. A linear correlation between glycolate loading rate and biogas amount was observed (R² = 0.99) for glycolate loading rates up to 1.81 g L-1 day-1 with a maximum in biogas amount of 3635 mL day-1 encompassing 45% methane. The cytometric diversity remained high during the whole cultivation period. The dominating bacterial genera were Syntrophobotulus, Clostridia genus B55_F, Aminobacterium, and Petrimonas. Methanogenesis was almost exclusively performed by the hydrogenotrophic genus Methanobacterium.
