RESUMO

This study analyzed 271 actual police cases in order to address several prevalent issues in the eyewitness literature. Suspect identification (SI) rates were obtained for 289 photographic lineups, 258 field showups, 58 live lineups, and 66 lineup identifications preceded by earlier identifications. SI rates were assessed for 3 levels of extrinsic evidence: no extrinsic evidence, evidence of minimal probative value, and evidence of substantial probative value. The SI rates for the photographic lineups were assessed as a function of delay, same vs. cross-race conditions, witness type, and weapon presence. SI rates declined significantly over time; SI rates were significantly greater for the same-race condition. SI rates were much greater for field showups than photographic lineups, 76% vs. 48%. The SI rates for the field showups did not vary as a function of eyewitness conditions. The relation between confidence and suspect/foil identifications for the live lineups was significant and moderately high. The utility of archival identification studies for eyewitness testimony research is discussed.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: A photochemical treatment process has been developed for the inactivation of viruses and bacteria in platelet concentrates. This process is based on the photochemical reaction of a novel psoralen, S-59, with nucleic acids upon illumination with long-wavelength ultraviolet light (UVA, 320-400 nm). STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: High levels of pathogens were added to single-donor platelet concentrates containing 3 to 5 x 10(11) platelets in 300 mL of 35-percent autologous plasma and 65-percent platelet additive solution. After treatment with S-59 (150 microM) and UVA (0-3 J/cm2), the infectivity of each pathogen was measured with established biologic assays. In vitro platelet function after photochemical treatment was evaluated during 7 days of storage by using a panel of 14 assays. The in vivo recovery and life span of photochemically treated platelets were evaluated after 24 hours of storage in a primate transfusion model. RESULTS: The following levels of pathogen inactivation were achieved: >10(6.7) plaque-forming units (PFU) per mL of cell-free human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), >10(6.6) PFU per mL of cell-associated HIV, >10(6.8) infectious dose (ID50) per mL of duck hepatitis B virus (a model for hepatitis B virus), >10(6.5) PFU per mL of bovine viral diarrhea virus (a model for hepatitis C virus), >10(6.6) colony-forming units of Staphylococcus epidermidis, and >10(5.6) colony-forming units of Klebsiella pneumoniae. Expression of integrated HIV was inhibited by 0.1 microM S-59 and 1 J per cm2 of UVA. In vitro and in vivo platelet function were adequately maintained after antiviral and antibacterial treatment. CONCLUSION: Photochemical treatment of platelet concentrates offers the potential for reducing transfusion-related viral and bacterial diseases.

RESUMO

This study evaluated the age-related and ambulation-related incidence of scoliosis among boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and the relationship between wheelchair dependency and scoliosis. Charts of 88 DMD boys were reviewed retrospectively. The relationships between age and both wheelchair dependency and scoliosis were graphed as cumulative distributions with increasing patient age. The relationship between ambulation status and scoliosis was analyzed with a stepwise series of chi square analyses, assuming increasing time intervals between wheelchair dependency and scoliosis. Wheelchair dependency and scoliosis were both age-related phenomena. The relationship between ambulation status and scoliosis became significant only after 3.5 years of wheelchair dependency. It should be noted that 24% of boys with scoliosis developed their curves before cessation of ambulation. While development of scoliosis among DMD boys is clearly an age-related phenomenon, its previously assumed relationship to ambulation requires reevaluation.

RESUMO

This study examined the social and academic implications of mainstream, mainstream and special (combined) or special-class education for 31 adolescents with spina bifida, and for their primary caretakers. The Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test and the UCLA Loneliness Scale (adolescents) and the Personality Inventory for Children (caretakers) were administered. Adolescents in mainstream classes had the most normal scores for academic and social skills, those in combined classes had intermediate scores and those in special classes had the lowest scores. Paradoxically, adolescents in combined classes reported the least loneliness. This study suggests that even among students with relatively good social skills, mainstream placement is associated with greater subjective experience of loneliness than is combined placement.
