RESUMO

The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the effectiveness of the osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) in adults with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). A literature resview was carried out on the following databases: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, Cinahl, Scopus, PEDro and ClinicalTrials.gov. 350 articles were recovered. Eligibility criteria were evaluated by two independent reviewers, including randomized controlled trials (RCTs), quasi-RCTs, or ongoing RCTs with OMT compared to any kind of control in patients diagnosed with IBS. Six studies (five RCTs and one ongoing RCT) were considered eligible. Four RCTs were classified as some concerns and one as high risk of bias. In the meta-analysis, OMT compared to sham/no intervention showed statistically significant results for abdominal pain (effect size ES = -1.14 [-1.66, -0.62]; p < 0.0001) and constipation (ES = -0.66 [-1.12, -0.20]; p = 0.005). Instead, OMT was not superior to the control for the IBS symptoms measured with the IBS Severity Score and the Likert scale (ES = -0.34 [-0.83, 0.16]; p = 0.19), and diarrhea (ES = -1.20 [-2.84, 0.43]; p = 0.15). The quality of evidence was "low" for IBS symptoms in general for abdominal pain and constipation, while it was judged as "very low" for diarrhea. OMT turns out to be safe in the treatment of IBS without major adverse effects. OMT may be effective in IBS patients, however the results must be interpreted carefully due to the low methodological quality of the studies.

RESUMO

A novel CMOS bio-pixel array which integrates assay substrate and assay readout is demonstrated for multiplex and multireplicate detection of a triplicate of cytokines with single digit pg ml(-1) sensitivities. Uniquely designed large area bio-pixels enable individual assays to be dedicated to and addressed by single pixels. A capability to simultaneously measure a large number of targets is provided by the 128 available pixels. Chemiluminescent assays are carried out directly on the pixel surface which also detects the emitted chemiluminescent photons, facilitating a highly compact sensor and reader format. The high sensitivity of the bio-pixel array is enabled by the high refractive index of silicon based pixels. This in turn generates a strong supercritical angle luminescence response significantly increasing the efficiency of the photon collection over conventional farfield modalities.

RESUMO

We report the extension to a multi-axes exploration of the potential well reconstruction method against drag force to simultaneously characterize the potential wells of several trapping sites generated with holographic optical tweezers. The final result is a robust, fast and automatic procedure we use to characterize holographic tweezers. We mainly focus on the reliability of the method and its application to address the dependence of the diffraction efficiency with the trap position in a given holographic traps pattern.

RESUMO

Real-time dynamic holographic optical tweezers suffer from an intrinsic limitation. The diffractive optical element, which is the key to reconstruction, requires time for the calculation and physical constraints to be satisfied. In particular, when working in a volume these requirements become highly expensive. Quadrant kinoform represents an alternative to traditional 3D holograms. A spatial domain multiplexing combined with lens term phase profiles allow the independent addressing and control of different planes in the reconstruction volume. The bidimensional holograms used pose less severe physical constraints and the reduced size leads, at the cost of a lower reconstruction resolution, to a consistent speedup in the computation time thus improving real-time interactions.
