RESUMO

Introduction: Increased triglycerides (TGs) are a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, hypertriglyceridemia is commonly associated with a reduction of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and an increase in atherogenic small-dense low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C) levels. Studies provide support that polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids (ω3-LCPUFAs) are cardioprotective and have antithrombotic and anti-inflammatory effects. The potential effects of ω3-LCPUFAs on cardiometabolic factors and anti-inflammatory actions in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) are limited. This is a secondary analysis of a previous clinical trial registered at clinical trials.gov (# NCT01051154) that was conducted to analyze the effect of ω3-LCPUFAs in pediatric patients with ALL who were receiving treatment. Objective: To examine the effect of supplementation with ω3-LCPUFAs on cardiometabolic factors in children with ALL undergoing treatment. Methods: Thirty-four children (placebo group: 20 patients; ω3-LCPUFAs group: 14 patients) aged 6.7 ± 2.7 years who were newly diagnosed with ALL were evaluated. Children were randomized to receive either ω3-LCPUFAs or placebo capsules (sunflower oil). ω3-LCPUFAs were administered in the form of 500-mg soft capsules. The ω3-LCPUFA capsules contained 225 mg of DHA, 45 mg of EPA, and 20 mg of another ω3-LCPUFAs. The omega-3 dose was administered at a rate of 0.100 g/kg of body weight/day for three months. Main outcomes: Fasting cholesterol, HDL-C, very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL-C), TGs, atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), android/gynoid ratio (A/GR), IL-6, TNF-α, and percentage of fat mass (DXA) were measured in all patients. Fatty acid analyses in red blood cells were performed with gas chromatography. Results: We found significantly lower levels of TGs (p=0.043), VLDL-C (p=0.039), IL-6 (p=0.025), and AIP (p=0.042) in the ω3-LCPUFAs group than in the placebo group at three months. In contrast, the total cholesterol concentration was higher at 3 months in the ω3-LCPUFAs group than in the placebo group (155 mg/dl vs. 129 mg/dl, p=0.009). The number of children with hypertriglyceridemia (85% vs. 50%; p=0.054) tended to be lower between the time of diagnosis and after 3 months of supplementation with ω3-LCPUFAs. Conclusion: These findings support the use of ω3-LCPUFAs to reduce some adverse cardiometabolic and inflammatory risk factors in children with ALL. Clinical trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov, identifier NCT01051154.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The unexpected Xylella fastidiosa (Xf) outbreak in Europe has led to aggressive management of the disease in recent years. As there is no cure for infected plants, management of vector populations is mandatory to contain the spread of Xf in infected areas. We aimed to assess the suitability of plant species commonly used as cover crops for the population growth of Philaenus spumarius L. (Aphrophoridae). Thus, we conducted a series of no-choice and multiple-choice assays to assess the oviposition preference of P. spumarius adults as well as the development and mortality rate of nymphs on 10 candidate plant species under laboratory and semi-field conditions. Our results will help to design ecological infrastructures, including a pull-push strategy for effective management of Xf vectors in olive groves. RESULTS: Results showed that Anthriscus cerefolium is a suitable plant to enhance oviposition but has a lethal effect on the first nymphal instars of P. spumarius. Moreover, Diplotaxis tenuifolia is not suitable for oviposition or nymphal development. Sinapis alba does not enhance oviposition but is suitable for nymphal development with a medium-high cumulative mortality of the nymphs. Conversely, adults and nymphs had a high preference and low mortality on Taraxacum officinale, and nymphs showed a medium-high preference on Lavandula angustifolia, suggesting that these two species should be avoided as ground cover plants on Xf-susceptible crops. CONCLUSION: The results obtained in our study open new ways to manage the vectors of Xf by using specific plant species as ground cover, which in turn will reduce the spread and prevalence of Xf. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

The coupling reactions of polyethylene glycol (PEG) with two different nano-carbonaceous materials, graphene oxide (GO) and expanded graphene oxide (EGO), were achieved by amide bond formations. These reactions yielded PEGylated graphene oxides, GO-PEG and EGO-PEG. Whilst presence of the newly formed amide links (NH-CO) were confirmed by FTIR stretches observed at 1732 cm-1 and 1712 cm-1, the associated Raman D- and G-bands resonated at 1311/1318 cm-1 and 1584/1595 cm-1 had shown the carbonaceous structures in both PEGylated products remain unchanged. Whilst SEM images revealed the nano-sheet structures in all the GO derivatives (GO/EGO and GO-PEG/EGO-PEG), TEM images clearly showed the nano-structures of both GO-PEG and EGO-PEG had undergone significant morphological changes from their starting materials after the PEGylated processes. The successful PEGylations were also indicated by the change of pH values measured in the starting GO/EGO (pH 2.6-3.3) and the PEGylated GO-PEG/EGO-PEG (pH 6.6-6.9) products. Initial antifungal activities of selective metallic nanomaterials (ZnO and Cu) and the four GO derivatives were screened against Candida albicans using the in vitro cut-well method. Whilst the haemocytometer count indicated GO-PEG and copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) exhibited the best antifungal effects, the corresponding SEM images showed C. albicans had, respectively, undergone extensive shrinkage and porosity deformations. Synergistic antifungal effects all GO derivatives in various ratio of CuNPs combinations were determined by assessing C. albicans viabilities using broth dilution assays. The best synergistic effects were observed when a 30:70 ratio of GO/GO-PEG combined with CuNPs, where MIC50 185-225 µm/mL were recorded. Moreover, the decreased antifungal activities observed in EGO and EGO-PEG may be explained by their poor colloidal stability with increasing nanoparticle concentrations.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: To report the spectrum and frequency of conjunctiva tumours in an ocular oncology unit analysing the clinical profile of benign, precancerous and malignant conjunctival lesions. METHODS: A retrospective case series of 462 consecutive patients diagnosed at the Ocular Oncology Unit of the University Hospital of Valladolid from 1992 to 2017. RESULTS: Among 462 consecutive patients, the tumour was classified as melanocytic in 252 (54.5%) and non-melanocytic in 210 (45.5). Two hundred forty-eight males (mean age 51.63 (SD = 23.20)) and 214 females (mean age 48.27 (SD = 21.77)) were included. Mean patient age at diagnosis was 50.07 years (range = 1-92 years). The majority of tumours were benign (n = 307 (66.5%)) followed by precancerous (n = 103 (22.3%)) and finally by malignant ones (n = 52 (11.3%)). Benign lesions were predominantly found in younger individuals rather than premalignant (p < 0.05) and malignant ones (p < 0.05). Most of the melanocytic lesions were benign (88.5%), most epithelial ones were precancerous (61.4%) and most lymphoid lesions were malignant (56.3%). Tumours involving one or four quadrants of the ocular surface usually were benign, unlike tumours involving three quadrants that were malignant (16 (48.5%) p < 0.05). The majority of benign lesions were detected on females (n = 163 (53.1%)) by routine examination (n = 178 (86.4%)). However, main complaint in malignant tumours was the growth of the lesion (n = 39 (76.5%)). CONCLUSION: Most of the conjunctival tumours were melanocytic, mostly benign, closely followed by those of epithelial origin, with a predominance of precancerous lesions. Melanocytic, epithelial and lymphoid tumours accounted for over 90% of cases. A trend was identified with benign lesions being found in younger female patients on routine examination.

RESUMO

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is the most common type of childhood cancer worldwide. Mexico City has one of the highest incidences and mortality rates of this cancer. It has previously been recognized that chromosomal translocations are important in cancer etiology. Specific fusion genes have been considered as important treatment targets in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The present research aimed at the identification and characterization of novel fusion genes with potential clinical implications in Mexican children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The RNA-sequencing approach was used. Four fusion genes not previously reported were identified: CREBBP-SRGAP2B, DNAH14-IKZF1, ETV6-SNUPN, ETV6-NUFIP1. Although a fusion gene is not sufficient to cause leukemia, it could be involved in the pathogenesis of the disease. Notably, these new translocations were found in genes encoding for hematopoietic transcription factors which are known to play an important role in leukemogenesis and disease prognosis such as IKZF1, CREBBP, and ETV6. In addition, they may have an impact on the prognosis of Mexican pediatric patients with ALL, with the potential to be included in the current risk stratification schemes or used as therapeutic targets.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To compare and evaluate the agreement between the measurements obtained with a swept-source optical coherence tomography (OCT)-based biometer, the IOLMaster® 700 (IOLM), and those obtained by an optical biometer based on optical low-coherence interferometry (OLCI), the Aladdin (ALD); To evaluate the ability to perform biometric measurements in those eyes with transparency alterations. METHODS: Fifty-five eyes of 55 subjects were included in this study. Axial length (AL), corneal power (K, in diopters) and its astigmatism, anterior chamber depth (ACD), central corneal thickness (CCT), and lens thickness (LT) measures were obtained within both biometers, Zeiss IOLMaster 700 and Topcon Aladdin. Results were analyzed and compared using the Student's paired samples t-test, Bland-Altman analysis and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). RESULTS: Mean age was 73.12 ± 2.63 (62-89 years). The IOLM mean AL, K, and LT values did not show a statistically significant difference from ALD values and showed excellent agreement and correlation (ICC = 1.000, 0.970, 0.952). IOLM measured a lower mean ACD (-0.036 mm) and higher CCT measurements (9.296 µm). Those results were statistically different (p < 0.001 in both cases) but showed an excellent correlation coefficients (ICC = 0.994, 0.938). IOLM was able to obtain measures from all the eyes examined, while ALD did not measure in two cases with dense nuclear cataract. ALD showed spherical K measures in 7.27% of cases. CONCLUSION: Overall a quite good agreement between IOLM and ALD was found. ALD showed spherical keratometry measures in 7.27% of cases. IOLMaster 700 was more effective in obtaining AL measurements in eyes with dense cataracts.

RESUMO

The amount of data available in the sports field is difficult for coaches, analysts, and players to comprehend using classic analytics methods. Thus, new methods are necessary to help users break down that information and analyze it at a deeper level. The BKViz visual analytics system focuses on individual basketball games using classic and novel methods to reveal how players perform together and as individuals. The information is presented in interactive visualizations that allow immediate user feedback.
