RESUMO

This paper explores the feasibility of functionalizing mango stones with iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (MS-Fe3O4) by coprecipitation in batch adsorption processes. The synthesized material was characterized and applied in chloroquine (CQN) and sertraline hydrochloride (SER) removal from contaminated waters. The biosorbent was subjected to a regenerative study and treatment using a synthetic mixture of contaminants to evaluate its applicability in real effluents. The biosorbent was analyzed by transmission electron microscopy images, scanning electron microscopy, dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectra, and zeta potential to characterize its chemical and morphology properties. The techniques applied showed the effectiveness of the proposed modification. In the adsorption experiments, the optimal adsorbent dosage was 0.01 g for both contaminants. The pH strongly influenced the adsorption of the drugs on MS-Fe3O4, and the best results were obtained in the pH range of 5-6. Kinetic data showed a better fit to the pseudo-second-order model, and the equilibrium time was achieved in 16 h for CQN and 4 h for SER. Isotherm studies revealed maximum adsorptive capacities of 49.42 and 64.79 mg g-1, respectively, for CQN and SER, at 318 K, demonstrating that the increase in temperature is a favorable factor, and the Sips model better describes the process. The thermodynamic parameters indicate an endothermic (ΔH° >0), spontaneous (ΔG° <0), and reversible (ΔS° >0) nature of the adsorption. This process is essentially governed by physical forces, such as hydrogen and π-π bonds. However, it is also valid to consider the presence of electrostatic forces due to the ionizing nature of CQN and SER. The MS-Fe3O4 biosorbent showed good performance when evaluated in a synthetic mixture of four contaminants, with an overall removal efficiency of approximately 86% and the regenerative capacity of three reusing cycles.

RESUMO

The presence of sertraline hydrochloride (SER) has been detected in water bodies and wastewater, which encourages the search for alternative treatments for its control and removal. Agro-industrial residues are considered efficient adsorbents and functionalization with magnetic nanoparticles improve the adsorptive properties of these materials, in addition to facilitating their separation from a fluid by an external magnetic field. Thus, this study developed and characterized a new material via the functionalization of the banana peel with iron oxide nanoparticles (BANFunc) for the adsorption of SER in batch experiments. Physicochemical and spectroscopic techniques indicated that the BANFunc functionalization method was effective and improved the adsorption capacity (0.68 and 39.96 mg g-1 for BANPure and BANFunc, respectively). The adsorption studies revealed a maximum adsorptive capacity of 142.85 mg g-1 at 240 min and 318 K. Furthermore, the process presented spontaneous and endothermic behaviour, with a better fit to the pseudo-first-order and Langmuir models for the kinetic and isothermal, respectively. The reuse of the biosorbent was effective for five cycles, and even in the 3rd cycle, the adsorbent showed more than 80% SER removal. The adsorption process can be explained by hydrogen bonds and π-interactions. In the synthetic mixture treatment, the biosorbent demonstrated a satisfactory removal rate, of 86.91%, and individual removals of 83.23%, 89.36% and 88.15% for SER, safranine orange and chloroquine, respectively. Therefore, BANFunc is a promising material for large-scale applications, considering its sustainable character and high treatment efficiency.

RESUMO

The present research aimed to evaluate the photocatalytic activity of manganese ferrite (M) and reduced graphene oxide (G) supported on pulverized activated carbon from cow bone waste (PAC-MG). PAC-MG was characterized by different instrumental techniques. The efficiency of PAC-MG was evaluated using solar irradiation under different conditions of photocatalyst concentration, H2O2 concentration, and pH ranges for the discoloration of methylene blue dye (MB). The synergy between the nanomaterials potentiated the photocatalytic activity, reaching 85.5% of MB discoloration when using 0.25 g L-1 of catalyst at neutral pH with no oxidant needed. Furthermore, PAC-MG demonstrated excellent stability in 6 consecutive cycles. Finally, it is expected that the present study can add value to industrial waste and contribute to the development of novel water and wastewater treatment methods, ensuring water quality for human consumption and the environment.

RESUMO

Cyanobacteria are aquatic microorganisms of high interest for research due to the production of secondary metabolites, among which the most popular are cyanotoxins, responsible for causing severe poisoning in humans and animals through ingestion or contact with contaminated water bodies. Monitoring the number of cyanobacteria in water and concentrations of secreted cyanotoxins with the aid of sensitive and reliable methods is considered the primary action for evaluating potentially toxic blooms. There is a great diversity of methods to detect and identify these types of micro contaminants in water, differing by the degree of sophistication and information provided. Mass Spectrometry stands out for its accuracy and sensitivity in identifying toxins, making it possible to identify and characterize toxins produced by individual species of cyanobacteria, in low quantities. In this review, we seek to update some information about cyanobacterial peptides, their effects on biological systems, and the importance of the main Mass Spectrometry methods used for detection, extraction, identification and monitoring of cyanotoxins.

RESUMO

Aerogels are highly porous and ultralight three-dimensional materials with great potential for various applications. To obtain highly porous and structurally stable aerogels, a carefully designed synthesis process is required. These materials offer flexibility in manipulating their properties, allowing the incorporation of modifying agents according to specific needs. In this study, compounds were synthesized using graphene oxide (GO) and nanocellulose fibers (NFC) through the hydrothermal reduction methodology. Two drying techniques were employed: lyophilization and oven evaporation, resulting in materials called cryogel and xerogel, respectively. Various parameters that can interfere with the properties of these nanomaterials were evaluated. The results indicated that the cryogel dried by lyophilization provided the best applicability due to its structural flexibility after compressions, whereas the xerogel obtained through the oven evaporation process resulted in a compound with high rigidity and disintegration. Structural characterizations demonstrated the successful development of the precursors and promising characteristics in the synthesized nanomaterials. With its flexibility, approximately 98% porosity, low shrinkage rate, light weight, and electrical conductivity, the developed cryogel showed high potential in various applications, such as pressure sensors, electromagnetic shielding, and other research and development fields.

RESUMO

Ionized water has been reported to contribute to the tissue repair process and wound healing. Water purifiers can generate ionized water by means of activated charcoal with silver and minerals, the main purpose of which are to reduce microbiological and physicochemical contaminants. Moreover, when water is subjected to a magnetic field an organization of water molecules occurs due to the presence of mineral salts. The resulting water is thus more alkaline, which has been shown to be non-toxic to mice and can actually prolong survival. Cutaneous leishmaniasis is a neglected tropical disease, caused by obligate uni- and intracellular protozoa belonging to the genus Leishmania, that can manifest in the form of skin lesions. Thus, the objective of this study was to compare the evolution of disease in L. amazonensis-infected BALB/c mice that received tap water (TW) or ionized alkaline water (IAW). As a control, additional groups of mice receiving TW or IAW were also treated with the antileishmanial miltefosine. All mouse groups received either TW or IAW as drinking water 30 days prior to infection and the groups continued to receive the respective drinking water for 4 weeks, after which the blood and plasma were collected. Biochemical assays of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, gamma-glutamyl transferase, creatinine, urea, glucose, triglycerides, and cholesterol were performed, in addition to hematology tests. There was a significant decrease in the volume of the lesion for groups that received IAW, in which the ingestion of ionized alkaline water favored the non-evolution of the lesion in the footpads of the animals. The results of the blood count and leukogram tests were within the normal values for BALB/c mice demonstrating that ionized water has no toxic effects on blood factors.

RESUMO

Carbonaceous materials have been widely applied as adsorbents, but there are some factors that affect their efficiency. In this context, advances in nanotechnology provide new and more efficient methodologies for water treatment. This study evaluated the efficiency of a novel carbon-based adsorbent developed from Brazilian polyacrylonitrile textile fiber and functionalized with iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles for the removal of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) from the aqueous medium. The synthesized adsorbent (ACF-Fe3O4) was characterized by FTIR, XRD, VSM, Zeta potential, SEM, EDX, and TEM. The characterization techniques showed that the adsorbent has peaks characteristic of its precursors and superparamagnetic characteristics, confirming the efficiency of the synthesis method. The adsorption tests evaluated the influence of adsorbent dosage, pH of the contaminant solution, contact time and temperature on the removal of 2,4-D. The experimental data were better adjusted by the pseudo-second order kinetic model and by the Langmuir isothermal model. The thermodynamic parameters revealed that the process is exothermic, spontaneous and thermodynamically favorable. Under the best experimental conditions, the maximum adsorption capacity obtained was 51.10 mg g-1 with an adsorbent concentration of 0.33 g L-1, natural pH of the solution, temperature of 288 K at the equilibrium time of six hours. Adsorbent reusage was studied in four desorption cycles. The adsorption mechanism can be explained through π-π bonds, hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions. The prepared material presented high-efficiency adsorption capacity of 2,4-D compared to other carbonaceous materials present in the literature, demonstrating its viability for the removal of this contaminant from the aqueous medium.

RESUMO

In this work, Chloroquine diphosphate, and the cationic dye Safranin-O were selectively removed from water using the agar-graphene oxide (A-GO) hydrogel, produced via simple one-step jellification process. The morphology of the A-GO biocomposite was characterized and batch experiments were performed, with adsorption isotherms satisfactorily fitting (R2 > 0.98) Sips (Safranin-O) and Freundlich (Chloroquine) isotherms. Driving force models and Fick's diffusion equation were applied to the modeling of kinetic data, and a satisfactory fit was obtained. Selective adsorption carried out in batch indicated that competitive adsorption occurs when both components are mixed in water solution - the adsorptive capacities dropped ∼10 mg g-1 for each component, remaining 41 mg g-1 for safranin-O and 31 mg g-1 for chloroquine. Fixed-bed breakthrough curves obtained in an adsorption column showed adsorption capacities over 63 mg g-1 and 100 mg g-1 for chloroquine and safranin-O, respectively, also exhibiting outstanding regenerative potentials. Overall, the biocomposite produced using graphene oxide proved to be a viable and eco-friendly alternative to continuously remove both contaminants from water.

RESUMO

Staphylococcus aureus is often associated worldwide with foodborne illnesses, and the elimination of biofilms formed by this bacterium from industrial surfaces is very challenging. To date, there have been few attempts to investigate plant oils obtained by recent green technologies, applied against biofilms on usual surfaces of the food industry and bacteria isolated from such environment. Therefore, this study evaluated the activity of Moringa oleifera seed oil (MOSO), extracted with pressurized n-propane, against standard and environmental S. aureus biofilms. Additionally, a genotypic and phenotypic study of the environmental S. aureus was proposed. It was found that this bacterium was a MSSA (methicillin-sensitive S. aureus), a carrier of icaA and icaD genes that has strong adhesion (OD550=1.86 ± 0.19) during biofilm formation. The use of pressurized n-propane as a solvent was efficient in obtaining MOSO, achieving a yield of 60.9%. Gas chromatography analyses revealed the presence of a rich source of fatty acids in MOSO, mainly oleic acid (62.47%), behenic acid (10.5%) and palmitic acid (7.32%). On polystyrene surface, MOSO at 0.5% and 1% showed inhibitory and bactericidal activity, respectively, against S. aureus biofilms. MOSO at 1% allowed a maximum reduction of 2.38 log UFC/cm² of S. aureus biofilms formed on PVC (polyvinyl chloride) surface. Scanning electron microscopy showed disturbances on the surface of S. aureus after exposure to MOSO. These unprecedented findings suggest that MOSO extracted with pressurized n-propane is potentially capable of inhibiting biofilms of different S. aureus strains, thus, contributing to microbiological safety during food processing.

RESUMO

Eutrophicating compounds promote the growth of cyanobacteria, which has the potential of releasing toxic compounds. Alternative raw materials, such as residues, have been used in efficient adsorption systems in water treatment. The aim of the present study was to apply the residue Okara in its original form and modified by hydrolysis with immobilization of magnetic nanoparticles as an adsorbent. For the removal, the cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa was chosen, as well as its secondary metabolites, L-amino acids leucine and arginine (MC-LR microcystin), from aqueous solutions. The adsorbents presented a negative surface charge, and the x-ray diffraction (DRX) outcomes successfully demonstrated the immobilization of iron oxide nanoparticles on the adsorbents. The adsorbent with the best result was the Okara hydrolyzed and functionalized with iron oxide, which showed a 47% (qe = 804.166 cel/g) and 85% (qe = 116.94 µg/L) removal for the cyanobacteria cells and chlorophyll-a, respectively. The kinetics study demonstrated a pseudo-first-order adsorption with maximal adsorption in 480 minutes, removing 761 µg/L of chlorophyll-a. In this trial, a low organic material removal has occurred, with a removal rate of 5% (qe = 0.024 mg/g) in the analysis of compounds in absorbance by ultraviolet light (UV) monitored by optical density determination in 254 nm (OD254). Nevertheless, the reaction system with the presence of organic material removed 53,28% of the MC-LR toxin, with adsorption capacities of 2.84 µg/L in a preliminary trial conducted for two hours, arising as a potential and alternative adsorbent with a capacity of removing cyanobacteria and cyanotoxin cells simultaneously.

RESUMO

The clinoptilolite natural zeolites (NZs) posses low herbicide adsorption capacity demanding acid-, alkali-, or salt chemical modifications that enhance its adsorption. However, this may affect the material structure and charge distribution. Alternatively, zeolites may be synthesized at a high cost and time-consuming process. Consequently, new methods, such as the hydrothermal method, for NZ modification needs to be studied. In this sense, a novel surface-modified zeolite (SMZ), using hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), in acid media was produced by the hydrothermal method and applied for the adsorption of Atrazine (ATZ), Diuron (DIU) and 2,4-D. Commercial NZ and SMZ were characterized by SEM, XRD, TGA, FT-IR, AA spectroscopy, pHPZC, Zeta potential and N2-physisorption. The SMZ chosen for the adsorption experiments was the one with the highest modification yield and adsorption capacity obtained from a complete design of experiments (CTAB=0.74 ; D=12 Mesh; HCl=0.1 M; t=6 h and T=205 ºC). The adsorption experiments revealed that the SMZ adsorption capacity for the herbicide 2,4-D (qmax=9.02 mg/g) was greater than that obtained for ATZ (qmax=2.11 mg/g) and DIU (qmax=1.85 mg/g), which was explained by the presence of the hydroxyl group and by geometric characteristics of the 2,4-D. Adsorption models' fitting showed that the adsorption of 2,4-D onto SMZ were best described by pseudo-second order kinetic (k2=0.005-0.006 g/mg.min; qe,exp=7.122-8.614 mg/g) and Langmuir isothermal model (KL=0.283-0.499 L/mg; qm=7.167-7.995 mg/g). These results indicate that the hydrothermal method is a viable alternative to enable the use of NZs for the adsorption of emerging contaminants from wastewater.

RESUMO

The presence of micropollutants, such as caffeine (CAF), has been detected throughout the world, since conventional treatment plants are not able to properly degrade them. CAF is a widely consumed stimulant, and has been demanding the development of efficient methodologies for its removal. Aiming at the agriculture waste valorization, a new hydrochar was developed based on chemical and thermal modification of peach stones (mod-PS) for CAF removal from water and from a synthetic mixture. The morphology, functional groups and surface electrical charge of the adsorbent were characterized by SEM, FTIR and zeta potential, respectively. Regarding CAF adsorption performance, the equilibrium time was reached at 480 min and the pseudo-second-order model presented the best fit for the experimental data. The maximum adsorption capacity was 68.39 mg g-1 (298 K) and the Langmuir model exhibited a better fit for the isothermal data. The thermodynamic properties confirmed that the process was exothermic, spontaneous and reversible. The main adsorption mechanisms were hydrogen bonds and π-interactions. The global removal efficiency was satisfactory in the synthetic mixture simulating real wastewater (67%). Therefore, the proposed new hydrochar has potential application as a low-cost adsorbent for CAF removal.

RESUMO

Cachaça is a typical Brazilian distilled beverage made from fermented sugarcane juice. The copper levels in alembic cachaça are of great concern among producers, and the removal of this contaminant is important for the quality of the product. The present study aimed to remove copper ions from alembic cachaça by adsorption. Sugarcane bagasse, okara, Moringa oleifera Lam., three different types of zeolites, and two types of commercial charcoal were tested as biosorbents. The heat-treated sugarcane bagasse removed 100% of the copper present in a cachaça sample, while other low-cost natural adsorbents had close to 50% removal as was observed for M. oleifera seeds and okara. All adsorbents had porous and fibrous structures, favorable to adsorption. A kinetic study showed that a pseudo-second-order model was appropriate, with equilibrium times of 15 h for heat-treated sugarcane bagasse, okara, and M. oleifera seeds used as adsorbents. The Langmuir model better fitted the experimental data, indicating monolayer adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity was 17.00, 0.77, and 5.33 mg of Cu g-1 for the heat-treated sugarcane bagasse, M. oleifera seeds, and okara, respectively. The results presented here are promising indicating three agro-industrial residues were favorable to the adsorption of copper ions from alembic cachaça.

RESUMO

Triclosan (TCS) is widely used in the production of antibacterial products, being often found in wastewater. Therefore, this study developed new materials via soybean hulls (SBHF) and açaí seeds (AÇSF) functionalization with iron oxide nanoparticles to be applied in the TCS adsorption. The characterization confirmed the functionalization of the materials. The adsorption results indicated that the equilibrium of the process occurred after 480 and 960 min for SBHF and AÇSF, respectively. The maximum adsorptive capacity values were 158.35 and 155.09 mg g-1 for SBHF and AÇSF, respectively, at 318 K. The kinetic and isothermal data better fitted to the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models. Thermodynamics indicated that the processes had an endothermic, spontaneous, and reversible character. The main adsorption mechanisms were H-bond and π-interactions. The pH and ionic strength studies indicated that the adsorption efficiency has not been reduced pronouncedly. The biosorbents reuse was effective for five cycles. In the synthetic mixture, the removal rate was satisfactory (92.53% and 57.02%, respectively for SBHF and AÇSF). These results demonstrate the biosorbents high potential for large-scale application.

RESUMO

The occurrence of acetaminophen in surface water has been reported worldwide, indicating the need of alternative wastewater treatments. Activated hydrochar (AHC) is efficient for pharmaceuticals removal. Powdered AHC presents challenges that hamper its expansion. However, these issues can be overcome by adding polymers, such as alginate, in composite beads. Therefore, the present study aimed to develop and characterize alginate/brewer's spent grain AHC beads, applying them to acetaminophen adsorption in batch and fixed-bed experiments. The adsorbent presented a high surface area (533.42 m2 g-1) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) showed that alginate assigned new functional groups to the composite. Batch studies revealed an endothermic behavior and maximum adsorption capacity of 165.94 mg g-1, with an equilibrium time of 240 min. The fixed-bed maximum adsorption capacity was 127.01 mg g-1, with a mass transfer zone of 5.89 cm. The importance of alginate for the adsorbent development has been successfully proven.

RESUMO

A new adsorbent material based on graphene oxide (GO) functionalized with magnetic cobalt ferrite nanoparticles (γCoFe2O4) was synthesized via ultrasonication to remove the endocrine-disrupting-chemical bisphenol A (BPA) from aqueous solutions. The synthesized material (GO-γCoFe2O4) was characterized by TEM, SEM, DRX and FTIR analysis. Magnetization measures proved that the adsorbent had superparamagnetic characteristics that facilitated its separation from the aqueous solution. The maximum adsorption capacity obtained was 30 mg g-1 with adsorbent concentration of 1 g L-1, temperature of 55°C and natural pH of the solution. The experimental data were better adjusted to the kinetic models of pseudo-second-order and Langmuir isotherm. The thermodynamic parameters showed that the BPA adsorption on GO-γCoFe2O4 was spontaneous, exothermic and thermodynamically favourable. Desorption kinetics was performed using 50% ethanol as solvent, resulting in an equilibrium time of 4 h with better adjustment to the pseudo-second order kinetic model. The adsorbent showed a high regeneration capacity maintaining adsorptive capacity above 75% after 6 cycles of reuse.

RESUMO

The development of new technologies for water and wastewater treatment is a growing need due to the occurrence of micropollutants, such as dyes, in water resources. In this sense, green-synthesized nanoparticles are being extensively studied, due to their low cost, non-toxicity, and high efficiency in adsorption processes. Thus, the present study reports the green synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NP), obtained from pomegranate (Punica granatum) leaf extract, employed for the removal of Safranin-O (SO) dye. CuO-NP was characterized by physicochemical analysis. These analyzes suggested that the redox process occurred efficiently. Also, the material presented interesting elements for the removal of cationic dyes such as negative surface charge, high specific surface area, and predominance of mesopores. The kinetic data fitted the pseudo-second-order model, reaching equilibrium in 480 min. The equilibrium study resulted in a maximum adsorption capacity of 189.54 mg g-1 at 298 K and the experimental data best fitted the Langmuir model. The effect of pH and ionic strength did not present significant changes, which demonstrates an advantage of this adsorbent over other materials. The regeneration study allowed to verify the possibility of reuse CuO-NP, since after 4 cycles the adsorption capacity was 44% of the initial value. Considering the results found, CuO-NP has a high potential for applicability in the treatment of water contaminated by dyes.

RESUMO

Safranin orange (SO) is a cationic dye widely used in industrial sectors. It becomes a threat to the aquatic ecosystem once it reaches water resources, directly affecting photosynthetic activity and dissolved oxygen rate. In view of this scenario and considering the large production of agro-industrial waste, which provides significant disposal costs and environmental impacts, the agricultural by-products such as mandarin peels (MP) are being used as biosorbent materials. Thus, this work proposed the use of MP for SO adsorption. The material was characterized by SEM, zeta potential, and FTIR analysis, in which it was possible to verify heterogeneous porous morphology, predominantly negative surface, and organic functional groups that facilitate adsorption. The results were promising, wherein the maximum adsorption capacity was 464 mg g-1 (318 K), 0.4 g L-1 adsorbent concentration, 120 min equilibrium time and removal percentage of 84.75%. The experimental data showed a better fit to the Langmuir and pseudo-second order mathematical models. The thermodynamic analysis inferred spontaneous, endothermic, and reversible character for SO adsorption onto MP. The main proposed adsorptive mechanisms were hydrogen bonds, π-interactions, and electrostatic interactions. In addition, the reuse of MP showed good efficiency since the adsorption capacity was maintained above 50% after four cycles (from 77.90 to 41.55 mg g-1). Moreover, when evaluating the effect of pH and ionic strength, it verified that the adsorption efficiency was not reduced. Therefore, when compared with other materials, the versatility and potential applicability of MP as a low-cost adsorbent for wastewater treatment is notable.

RESUMO

This work aims to integrate several hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) activation mechanisms, photolysis (UVC irradiation), chemical electron transfer (TiO2-P25 photocatalysis), and reaction with TiO2-P25 in dark conditions, for reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation towards the removal of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), in a single unit operated in continuous-flow mode. An H2O2 stock solution is fed by the lumen side of a tubular ceramic membrane, delivering the oxidant to the (i) catalyst immobilized in the membrane shell-side and (ii) annular reaction zone (ARZ, space between membrane shell-side and outer quartz tube) where CECs contaminated water flows with a helix trajectory, being activated by UV light provided by four lamps placed symmetrically around the reactor. First, the effect of several parameters in the removal of a CEC target molecule, amoxicillin (AMX), was evaluated using a synthetic solution ([AMX]inlet = 2.0 mg L-1): (i) light source (UVA or UVC radiation), (ii) H2O2 dose, (iii) H2O2 injection method (radial permeation vs. upstream injection), and (iv) number of TiO2-P25 layers deposited on the membrane. The UVC/H2O2/TiO2 system with radial addition of H2O2 (20 mg L-1) and 9-TiO2-P25 layers provided the highest AMX removal efficiency (72.2 ± 0.5%) with a UV fluence of 45 mJ cm-2 (residence time of 4.6 s), due to the synergic effect of four mechanisms: (i) AMX photolysis, (ii) H2O2 photocleavage, (iii) TiO2-P25 photoactivation, and (iv) chemical reactions between H2O2 and TiO2-P25. The urban wastewater matrix showed a negative effect on AMX removal (~44%) due to the presence of ROS scavengers and light-filtering species.

RESUMO

ABSTRACTThe combined approach of specific surface area (SSA), porosity, microprobe analysis (EMPA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with EDX and infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) provided the mica mineral physico-chemical and morphological characterisation. The electrostatic surface properties were assessed through the determination of the Point of Zero Charge (pHPZC) by the drift method and the electrokinetic mica mineral features represented by the Isoelectric Point (pHIEP) which was carried out through zeta potential measurements. Adsorption tests were performed to correlate the surface charge behaviour of the mica mineral and its influence on the adsorption efficiency of two different dyes, namely: Safranin Orange (SO), as a cationic dye and Reactive Black 5 (RB5), as an anionic dye. The higher adsorption capacity SO dye was observed at pH 9 and achieved almost 83% of removal, while RB5 dye adsorption on mica surface had the highest result, about 45% of removal efficiency, on pH of 3. In both cases, the main mechanism identified that drove this results is the electrostatic force of attraction between the adsorbent edge surface charge (pH-dependent) and the ionic nature (anionic or cationic) of the pollutant dyes particles. The preliminary adsorption experiments demonstrated that the raw grounded mica mineral has a greater potential associated with its application on cationic dye removal in wastewater. The present study aimed to detail the main characteristics of the mica mineral in order to evaluate the potential use of such mineral residues in the removal efficiency of contaminated wastewater.
