RESUMO

The purpose of the current study is to understand how the early portion of COVID-19 pandemic impacted the health behaviors of rural families participating in a healthy lifestyles intervention. Caregivers of rural children participating in a healthy lifestyles intervention were invited to participate in a structured interview regarding how the COVID-19 pandemic affected their family and family health behaviors. Interviews were transcribed and the research team conducted a rigorous inductive thematic analysis. Structured qualitative interviews with caregivers (n=30) resulted in 5 saturated themes: (a) caregivers reported new or exacerbated mental health concerns and stress among family members, largely due to social isolation and external stressors, (b) caregivers reported feeling out of control of positive health behaviors for themselves and their children, (c) families reported variability in how they handled reductions in schedule demands, ranging from filling time with positive activities to negative behaviors such as snacking, (d) families continuously re-adjusted their approach to parenting, routines, and health behaviors due to internal and external factors, (e) families ate foods that were accessible and convenient, which impacted the health of the family diet. Despite being asked primarily about lifestyle behavior changes, families reported concerns around mental health. Implications are that professionals working with rural children and families, even those without mental health training, may be called upon to help address these concerns especially in these underserved, rural families.

RESUMO

To examine the early impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on rural parental stress and family behaviors, parents who participated in a 2nd-4th grade pediatric obesity intervention completed a survey in May 2020. Parents (N=77) experienced 7.8±2.7 events on the COVID-19 Exposure and Family Impact Scales (CEFIS) with an average impact of 2.5±0.5, with many parents reporting moderate stress (73%). Parental stress was predictive of personal well-being getting 'worse' while loss of income events were predictive of family routines getting 'better.' Professionals working with rural families may want to assess for these factors when promoting positive changes in family health behaviors.

RESUMO

Silicon-Few Layer Graphene (Si-FLG) composite electrodes are investigated using a scalable electrode manufacturing method. A comprehensive study on the electrochemical performance and the impedance response is measured using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The study demonstrates that the incorporation of few-layer graphene (FLG) results in significant improvement in terms of cyclability, electrode resistance and diffusion properties. Additionally, the diffusion impedance responses that occur during the phase changes in silicon is elucidated through Staircase Potentio Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (SPEIS): a more comprehensive and straightforward approach than previous state-of-charge based diffusion studies.

RESUMO

Hybrid anode materials consisting of micro-sized silicon (Si) particles interconnected with few-layer graphene (FLG) nanoplatelets and sodium-neutralized poly(acrylic acid) as a binder were evaluated for Li-ion batteries. The hybrid film has demonstrated a reversible discharge capacity of ∼1800 mA h g-1 with a capacity retention of 97% after 200 cycles. The superior electrochemical properties of the hybrid anodes are attributed to a durable, hierarchical conductive network formed between Si particles and the multi-scale carbon additives, with enhanced cohesion by the functional polymer binder. Furthermore, improved solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) stability is achieved from the electrolyte additives, due to the formation of a kinetically stable film on the surface of the Si.

RESUMO

A series of LiMn1-x-yFexVyPO4 (LMFVP) nanomaterials have been synthesized using a pilot-scale continuous hydrothermal synthesis process (CHFS) and evaluated as high voltage cathodes in Li-ion batteries at a production rate of 0.25 kg h-1. The rapid synthesis and screening approach has allowed the specific capacity of the high Mn content olivines to be optimized, particularly at high discharge rates. Consistent and gradual changes in the structure and performance are observed across the compositional region under investigation; the doping of Fe at 20 at% (with respect to Mn) into lithium manganese phosphate, rather than V or indeed codoping of Fe and V, gives the best balance of high capacity and high rate performance.

RESUMO

Long cycle performance is a crucial requirement in energy storage devices. New formulations and/or improvement of "conventional" materials have been investigated in order to achieve this target. Here we explore the performance of a novel type of carbon nanospheres (CNSs) with three heteroatom co-doped (nitrogen, phosphorous and sulfur) and high specific surface area as anode materials for lithium ion batteries. The CNSs were obtained from carbonization of highly-crosslinked organo (phosphazene) nanospheres (OPZs) of 300 nm diameter. The OPZs were synthesized via a single and facile step of polycondensation reaction between hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP) and 4,4'-sulphonyldiphenol (BPS). The X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed a high heteroatom-doping content in the structure of CNSs while the textural evaluation from the N2 sorption isotherms revealed the presence of micro- and mesopores and a high specific surface area of 875 m²/g. The CNSs anode showed remarkable stability and coulombic efficiency in a long charge-discharge cycling up to 1000 cycles at 1C rate, delivering about 130 mA·h·g-1. This study represents a step toward smart engineering of inexpensive materials with practical applications for energy devices.
