RESUMO

The triple role of 1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthalene (proton sponge) as a reductant, ligand precursor, and organic base in the palladium-catalyzed Heck-type coupling reaction of glycals with aryl iodides affords the rapid and stereoselective synthesis of 2',3'-unsaturated α-C-aryl glycosides in excellent yields. The role of the proton sponge in reducing palladium(II) to (0) has been studied using cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis, HRMS, and other spectroscopic techniques. This is the first example of a palladium proton sponge complex utilized in coupling reactions. The method is observed to be tolerant of various functional groups, as demonstrated by the huge substrate scope. Moreover, the 2',3'-unsaturated α-C-aryl glycosides were also converted to 3-keto-ß-C-glycosides under sterically hindered pyridinium salt catalysis via a ring-opening and -closing mechanism.

RESUMO

Polyamide composite (PA-TFC) membranes are the state-of-the-art ubiquitous platforms to desalinate water at scale. We have developed a novel, transformative platform where the performance of such membranes is significantly and controllably improved by depositing thin films of polymethylacrylate [PMA] grafted silica nanoparticles (PGNPs) through the venerable Langmuir-Blodgett method. Our key practically important finding is that these constructs can have unprecedented selectivity values (i.e., ∼250-3000 bar-1, >99.0% salt rejection) at reduced feed water pressure (i.e., reduced cost) while maintaining acceptable water permeance A (= 2-5 L m-2 h-1 Bar-1) with as little as 5-7 PGNP layers. We also observe that the transport of solvent and solute are governed by different mechanisms, unlike gas transport, leading to independent control of A and selectivity. Since these membranes can be formulated using simple and low cost self-assembly methods, our work opens a new direction towards development of affordable, scalable water desalination methods.

RESUMO

Food neophobia, described as a reluctance to eat and or avoid new food, is a personality trait that affects food choice. Despite its potential influence on an individual's food intake, food neophobia has been poorly investigated in Bangladesh. This cross-sectional study was designed to evaluate food neophobia and its association with sociodemographic factors and food preferences in a sample of Bangladeshi university students. Five hundred students from five public universities completed the structured surveys. Food neophobia was assessed by a 10-item validated food neophobia scale with some minor modifications based on study settings. A multiple linear regression model was used to observe the factors associated with food neophobia. The mean food neophobia score among study participants was 37.45 (SD: 13.39, Range: 13-67). According to the adjusted statistical model, being female (regression coefficient, ß = 2.73), having higher monthly family income (ß = -6.64), being underweight (ß = 4.68), being overweight (ß = -4.63), having any food allergy (ß = 9.09), and a history of sickness after eating a new food item (ß = 5.16) were significantly associated with food neophobia amongst the participants. The participants' liking of various food items such as vegetables were significantly correlated with food neophobia scores. Nutrition education policies and programs are of importance to address the students' food neophobia during their tertiary education so that they maintain lifelong healthy dietary habits and consume a variety of foods to improve their physical health and well-being.

RESUMO

SUMMARY: The present study intends to examine whether there exists any gender gap in out-of-pocket spending on hospitalization between elderly men and elderly women. Data were drawn from the NSS 75th Round Health Care Survey (2017-2018) consisting of a total number of 45,299 elderly. Bivariate analysis and t-test were used to examine the disease burden and gender gap in health spending. The burden of noncommunicable diseases such as bone disease and anemia is considerably higher among elderly women than elderly men. There is a significant, positive gender gap in inpatient health spending, especially in the rural area across various diseases. Lower level of awareness, male dominance in health-related decision-making, and financial dependence are some possible factors for the gender gap. Generating awareness among households and particularly among women regarding health-care system, chronic diseases, and sources of health financing along with formulating disease-specific policy may reduce the gender gap in health spending.

RESUMO

An incubation study was undertaken to study microbial resilience capacity of acid soil amended with farmyard manure (FYM), charcoal and lime under copper (Cu) perturbation. Copper stress significantly reduced enzymatic activities and microbial biomass carbon (MBC) in soil. Percent reduction in microbial activity of soil due to Cu stress was 74.7% in dehydrogenase activity, 59.9% in MBC, 48.2% in alkaline phosphatase activity and 15.1% in acid phosphatase activity. Soil treated with FYM + charcoal showed highest resistance index for enzymatic activities and MBC. Similarly, the highest resilience index for acid phosphatase activity was observed in soil amended with FYM (0.40), whereas FYM + charcoal-treated soil showed the highest resilience indices for alkaline, dehydrogenase activity and MBC: 0.50, 0.22 and 0.25, respectively. This investigation showed that FYM and charcoal application, either alone or in combination, proved to be better than lime with respect to microbial functional resistance and resilience of acid soil under Cu perturbation.

RESUMO

The use of computer and information technology is on an escalation. The internet, one of the key developments in this field, provides instant access to latest medical information. The present study was conducted (i) to estimate the extent and purpose of internet usage among undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) medical students, (ii) to identify factors that encourage the students to use internet for medical information, (iii) to assess the need for incorporating computer education in medical curriculum. A prospective, cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study was conducted on 150 students of Burdwan Medical College and Hospital between June 2009 and December 2009. Majority of the students accessed internet from their home PC (42% UGs and 52% PGs).Common search engines browsed commonly by both UGs and PGs include Google and yahoo. Regarding principles of telemedicine and evidence-based medicine, majority of the PGs are well versed while UGs are not (p-value 0.0001). Almost all students agreed to incorporate computer education in medical curriculum. Primary source of medical information was textbook for UGs (62%) and internet for the PGs (48%). Majority of UGs (48%) used internet as a ready source of information thus saving time while PGs (68%) primarily relied on internet for recent advances in their disciplines. The primary purposes of internet use are educational for both UGs and PGs. The data obtained indicates that majority of the medical students participating in the present study embrace and use internet to access medical information. It also justifies the need to incorporate internet and associated information technology into existing medical curriculum.
