RESUMO

This study examined the ability of the green microalgae Chlorella vulgaris to remove arsenic from aqueous solutions. A series of studies was conducted to determine the optimal conditions for biological arsenic elimination, including biomass amount, incubation time, initial arsenic level, and pH values. At 76 min, pH 6, 50 mgL-1 metal concentration, and 1 gL-1 bio-adsorbent dosage, the maximum removal of arsenic from an aqueous solution was 93%. The uptake of As (III) ions by C. vulgaris reached an equilibrium at 76 min of bio-adsorption. The maximum adsorptive rate of arsenic (III) by C. vulgaris was 55 mg/gm. The Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich equations were used to fit the experimental data. The best theoretical isotherm of Langmuir, Freundlich, or/and Dubinin-Radushkevich for arsenic bio-adsorption by Chlorella vulgaris was determined. To choose the best theoretical isotherm, the coefficient of correlation was used. The data on absorption appeared to be linearly consistent with the Langmuir (qmax = 45 mgg-1; R2 = 0.9894), Freundlich (kf = 1.44; R2 = 0.7227), and Dubinin-Radushkevich (qD-R = 8.7 mg/g; R2 = 0.951) isotherms. The Langmuir and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms were both good two-parameter isotherms. In general, Langmuir was demonstrated to be the most accurate model for As (III) bio-adsorption on the bio-adsorbent. Maximum bio-adsorption values and a good correlation coefficient were observed for the first-order kinetic model, indicating that it was the best fitting model and significant in describing the arsenic (III) adsorption process. SEM micrographs of treated and untreated algal cells revealed that ions adsorbed on the algal cell's surface. A Fourier-transform infrared spectrophotometer (FTIR) was used to analyze the functional groups in algal cells, such as the carboxyl group, hydroxyl, amines, and amides, which aided in the bio-adsorption process. Thus, C. vulgaris has great potential and can be found in eco-friendly biomaterials capable of adsorbing arsenic contaminants from water sources.

RESUMO

Notably, solitary waves that emerge from the nonlinear properties of plasmas are the main focus of many current studies of localized disturbances in both laboratory and astrophysical plasmas. By applying the reductive perturbation method, we derive the nonlinear homogeneous quantum Zakharov-Kuznetsov (QZK) equation in three-component collisionless quantum plasma consisting of electrons, positrons, and ions in the presence of an external static magnetic field. The solitary wave structures are dependent on the Bohm potential, magnetic field, obliqueness, species Fermi temperatures, and densities. The soliton's electric field and energy are also derived and investigated, which were found to be reduced as the magnetic field increases. The instability growth rate is also derived by using the small-k perturbation expansion method. The previous parameters affect the instability growth rate as well. A comparison of the energy and instability growth rate behaviour against system parameters is carried out. Large energy and large instability growth rate occur at large values of positron density or lower values of ion density. At zero or small rotation angle, both decrease as the magnetic field increases. Our findings could help us understand the dynamics of magnetic white dwarfs, pulsar magnetospheres, semiconductor plasma, and high-intensity laser-solid matter interaction experiments where e-p-i plasma exists.

RESUMO

This study is intended to evaluate the cytotoxicity of native and dual-modified black rice flour against the colon cancer cell line (HCT116) and mouse embryo cell line (3T3-L1) by using the MTT assay. The modification techniques applied to prepare rice flour samples were enzymatic modification and heat moisture treatment. In this study, the IC50 of native black rice flour and modified black rice flour was 255.78 µg/mL and 340.85 µg/mL, respectively. The result confirms that the native black rice flour has significant cytotoxic and anticancer potential against human colon cancer cells. In addition, the IC50 of native black rice flour and modified black rice flour on the 3T3-L1 cell line was found to be 345.96 µg/mL and 1106.94 µg/mL, respectively. The results showed that the native black rice flour had weak cytotoxicity, and modified black rice flour was nontoxic in both the cell lines. The active component of phytochemicals present in black rice flour has a potential role in preventing colon cancer.

RESUMO

The present study aimed to descry the effectiveness of dried microalga Chlamydomonas sp. for disposing of arsenic from aqueous solution. The study included examining the impact of some factors on algae's adsorption capacity (optimization study), such as initial concentrations of heavy metal, biosorbent doses, pH and contact time. All trials have been performed at constant temperature 25 °C and shaking speed of 300 rpm. The optimization studying indicated the pH 4, contact time at 60 min, temperature 25 °C and biomass concentration of 0.6 g/l were the best optimum conditions for the bioremediation activity with maximum removal percentage 95.2% and biosorption capacity 53.8 mg/g. Attesting of biosorption by applying FTIR (Fourier transfigure infrared), XRD (X-ray diffraction), SEM-EDX (Scanning Electron Microscope - Energy Dispersive X-ray), DLS (Dynamic light scarring) and ZP (Zeta Potential) was conducted. Also, Kinetics, isotherm equilibrium and thermodynamics were carried out to explain the plausible maximum biosorption capacity and biosorption rate of biosorbent q maximum.

RESUMO

Microalgae sorbents are microalgae that have the potential to passively bind heavy metals/contaminants to their cellular structures in a process called biosorption. This study investigates the use of two species of microalgae to remove the toxic heavy metal cobalt from aqueous solution. Two microalgae isolates, Phormidium tenue and Chlorella vulgaris, were collected from the Wadi Hanifah Stream in Riyadh, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. We determined the capacity of both isolates to bioremove Co+2 ions and the optimum conditions under which this occurs. The two isolates were additionally characterized by microscopic and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). In the current investigation, Phormidium tenue removed 94% of Co+2 under ideal conditions of pH 6, contact duration (30 min), starting concentration (50 mgL-1) and biosorbent dose (1gL-1); while Chlorella vulgaris removed 87% of Co+2 under the same parameters except pH 5.5 and contact duration (60 min). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirms the binding of Co+2 to the biomass, which comprises many of the functional groups. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed some alterations to the shape of algal cells and cellular components for both microalgae studied. In addition, equilibrium study by both Langmuir and Freundlich models was performed to detect the effect of certain equilibrium factors on the capacity of the biosorption mechanism. Finally, Phormidium tenue and Chlorella vulgaris were discovered to be promising microalgae for effective cobalt biosorption in aquatic conditions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Celastrol, a triterpene from plants, has been used in traditional oriental medicine to treat various diseases. Here, we investigated the cardioprotective effects of celastrol against ischaemia. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Protective pathways induced by celastrol were investigated in hypoxic cultures of H9c2 rat cardiomyoblasts and in a rat model of myocardial infarction, assessed with echocardiographic and histological analysis. KEY RESULTS: In H9c2 cells, celastrol triggered reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation within minutes, induced nuclear translocation of the transcription factor heat shock factor 1 (HSF1) resulting in a heat shock response (HSR) leading to increased expression of heat shock proteins (HSPs). ROS scavenger N-acetylcysteine reduced expression of HSP70 and HSP32 (haeme oxygenase-1, HO-1). Celastrol improved H9c2 survival under hypoxic stress, and functional analysis revealed HSF1 and HO-1 as key effectors of the HSR, induced by celastrol, in promoting cytoprotection. In the rat ischaemic myocardium, celastrol treatment improved cardiac function and reduced adverse left ventricular remodelling at 14 days. Celastrol triggered expression of cardioprotective HO-1 and inhibited fibrosis and infarct size. In the peri-infarct area, celastrol reduced myofibroblast and macrophage infiltration, while attenuating up-regulation of TGF-ß and collagen genes. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: Celastrol treatment induced an HSR through activation of HSF1 with up-regulation of HO-1 as the key effector, promoting cardiomyocyte survival, reduction of injury and adverse remodelling with preservation of cardiac function. Celastrol may represent a novel potent pharmacological cardioprotective agent mimicking ischaemic conditioning that could have a valuable impact in the treatment of myocardial infarction.

RESUMO

Neurologic disorders represent the most severe complications of acute intermittent porphyria (AIP). Cognitive disturbances, bulbar and spinal weakness appear as the most critical neurological complications as they may lead to death or definitive motor weakness. A 38-year-old woman was admitted for an acute and painful tetra paresis occurring after a laparoscopy for an ovarian cyst. She also complained of abdominal pain treated with noramidopyrine, tachycardia, hypertension and hyponatremia. The electrophysiological examination showed a motor axonal neuropathy. The increase of Urine ALA at 268 micromol/l (N<38) and of at 235 micromol/l (N<5) strongly suggested AIP that was further confirmed by PBG desaminase deficiency in red cells. Thanks to the prescription of heme arginate (HA) at the dose of 3 mg/kg/day for 4 days, pain resolved immediately and motor function began to improve since the second day of treatment concurrently to a dramatic decrease of both urine ALA and PBG concentrations. Motor recovery was complete after 12 months of evolution. This case illustrates the potential severity of acute porphyric neuropathy when precipitating factors (noramidopyrine, surgery) are present in previously undiagnosed AIP. Moreover, motor neuronal function improved while HA therapy was initiated 22 days after the clinical onset of weakness. This tempts us to propose HA therapy at any stage of acute porphyric neuropathy.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Cat-Scratch Disease (CSD) is a well-recognized benign cause of localized lymphadenopathy, which often recovers spontaneously. However systemic clinical presentations are described in immunodeficient adults (bacillary angiomatosis, bacillary splenitis) and are less common in immunocompetent ones. EXEGESIS: We report two cases of disseminated CSD in immunocompetent patients, presenting hepatosplenic nodules, associated in the second case with an endocarditis. CONCLUSION: Bartonella serology must be achieved in case of hepatosplenic nodules with fever. Treatment of disseminated CSD in immunocompetent adults is still empirical and recovery can occur without antibiotherapy when endocarditis is not associated.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Adhesive capsulitis is a clinical entity characterized by a loss of motion and a decrease of the joint volume capacity. Results of clinical trials have shown that distensions can help to decrease pain and increase the range of motion. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to measure the effect of repeated distension arthrography combined with an intensive program of rehabilitation on pain, range of motion, and occupational outcome in patients with adhesive capsulitis. DESIGN: 39 cases of idiopathic capsulitis (7 cases) or secondary capsulitis (19 post-traumatic, 13 post-surgery of the rotator cuff) were included in the study. Intervention consisted of an intensive program of passive and active physiotherapy during one? Week and then distension arthrography, performed 3 times at 1- week intervals, with steroid injections in the glenohumeral joint and 1 in the subacromial space. RESULTS: Lateral elevation improved substantially after the first week of physiotherapy and medial rotation after the first distension. Pain intensity decreased after the first distension. After the third distension, very small changes were noted. Results did not differ by etiology of capsulitis. At the end of the program, 9 of 17 patients could return to their previous job. CONCLUSIONS: Two repeated arthrographic distensions with steroid injection and an intensive program of physiotherapy improves the range of motion and the painful condition associated with capsulitis and allows for a rapid return to employment. A third distension does not seem to provide a further benefit, as has been found by other studies.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To document incidence of poststroke urinary incontinence and retention and to determine its effect on 3 months outcome. METHODS: Prospective cohort study. One hundred fifty-five cases of first hemispherical stroke were classified by continence status, retention or incontinence, at D2 after stroke. Age, sex, stroke location and aetiology, hypertension, diabetes were noted. Outcome data collected at D15 and D90 included impairments, disabilities, quality of life and case fatality rates. Disabilities were measured with Barthel Index (BI), Franchay Arm Test (FAT), New Functional Ambulation Classification (NFAC) and quality of life with EuroQol. RESULTS: Of the 155 patients, 62 had initial urinary disorders. The incidence was 40% at D2, 32% at D15 and 19% at D90. Retention represented 36% of urinary disorders at D2 and D15 and only 19% at D90. Urinary disorders were associated with motor weakness, lower Barthel Index, dysphasia, aphasia, apraxia and unilateral neglect. There was no relation with sex, age, stroke aetiology and diabetes. At D90, patients with initial urinary disorders had higher case fatality rates 22% versus 16% (P < 0.0001) and greater disabilities: BI of 60 versus 90 (P < 0.0001), NFAC of five versus seven (P < 0.0001), FAT of four versus six (P = 0.0019). CONCLUSION: Poststroke urinary disorders were associated with stroke gravity and adversely affected D90 stroke survival rates and functional outcome. Retention was strongly associated with D90 survival rates.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency and the functional consequences of varus equinus in stabilized vascular hemiplegia. METHODS: Prospective cohort study of 86 hemiplegic patients. All patients consecutively admitted for a first hemispheral stroke between July 2001 and January 2002 were included. The evaluation consisted in a clinical examination and a descriptive study of gait. The functional capacity of patients with and without varus equinus were compared using the Barthel index, the New Functional Ambulation Classification (NFAC), the confortable ten meters gait speed and gait perimeter. RESULTS: The incidence of varus equinus was 18%. There was no difference in gait speed (0.8 m/s), NFAC or Barthel index between patients with or without varus equinus. Patients with varus equinus had had more specialized, intensive and prolonged rehabilitation. The only prognostic factor that could be identified was the motor impairment and the existence of spasticity. DISCUSSION: The mechanism of varus equinus is thought to be mainly the over-activity of gastrocnemius and solaris compared to that of the tibialis anterior, associated to the weakness of fibular muscles. The role of tibialis posterior is thought to be less important. The frequency of varus equinus after a first hemispheral stroke was low and the consequences were limited. This could be in part explained by the access of these patients to early, specialized and prolonged rehabilitation care.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study explores whether shoulder subluxation after stroke is related to age, hemiplegic side motor impairment, spasticity, sensory deficit, depression, unilateral neglect and length of stay in acute ward. METHOD: This prospective study included 57 patients with hemiplegia. The shoulder subluxation was systematically detected by radiography and quantified according to de Bats score. The complete clinical assessment of the upper limb on day 15 analyzed motricity (motricity index), spasticity of shoulder adductors and biceps (Ashworth), sensory deficit, unilateral neglect and depression (MADRS). Age, side of hemiplegia and the aetiology were also noted. We researched relations between shoulder subluxation and these clinical factors. Means were compared using Mann Whitney and chi(2) tests. Coefficients of correlation were estimated between two quantitative variables. A multiple regression analysis was also conducted including all significant parameters, the dependent variable being the shoulder subluxation. RESULTS: Shoulder subluxation was observed in 32% of hemiplegic patients. After multiple regression analysis, the main clinical factors related to subluxation were motor (p < 0.0001), spasticity of shoulder adductors (p = 0.028) and age (p = 0.036). Statistically, the risk of subluxation was divided by 1.62 (1.07, 2.43) for every five years age growth and by two (1.33, 2.94) when the motricity index went up by ten points. CONCLUSION: This study shows that the age could play an independent part. The loss of elasticity of the periarticular tissues when ageing could have a protective role.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Several reports suggest the usefulness of transcutaneous oxygen tension (TcPO(2)) in assessing the shoulder hand syndrome in stroke patients. But the literature presents a number of conflicting views on the variation of TcPO(2) values in this case. We found no report demonstrating the reliability of TcPO(2) measurements in the upper limb. The aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability of TcPO(2) measurements and investigate whether TcPO(2) can be used to evaluate the shoulder hand syndrome after stroke. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The TcPO(2) values were obtained on two separate occasions at one-day interval on 18 normal volunteers. Basal TcPO(2), local vasomotor reflex and reaction to ischemia were assessed. RESULTS: Thirty-six upper limbs were tested. The reliability was bad. We found that measurements of TcPO(2) varied by an average of 7.89 +/- 7.6 mmHg for a coefficient of variation of 96%. CONCLUSION: The reliability of TcPO(2) measurement was not sufficient to recommend this method in this indication.

RESUMO

The authors describe a patient thought to have pulmonary embolism. Results of a perfusion scan were normal, but Tc-99m DTPA aerosol ventilation lung scan showed, in successive views, decreased activity of the deposited aerosol. The lung Tc-99m DTPA clearance was measured and was markedly increased. This suggested possible hypersensitivity pneumonitis, which was later confirmed as pigeon breeder's disease. The decreased activity observed on the DTPA ventilation scan must be directed toward increased lung clearance and its measurement.
