BACKGROUND: Growing evidence demonstrates the importance of high- and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in certain immune and allergy-mediated diseases. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate levels of high- and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and apolipoproteins A1 and B in sera from a cohort of patients presenting with hypersensitivity reactions. We further assessed the function of high-density lipoprotein particles as well as their involvement in the molecular mechanisms of anaphylaxis. METHODS: Lipid profile determination was performed in paired (acute and baseline) serum samples from 153 patients. Thirty-eight experienced a non-anaphylactic reaction and 115 had an anaphylactic reaction (88 moderate and 27 severe). Lecithin cholesterol acyl transferase activity was assessed in patient sera, and we also evaluated macrophage cholesterol efflux in response to the serum samples. Last, the effect of anaphylactic-derived high-density lipoprotein (HDL) particles on the endothelial barrier was studied. Detailed methods are provided in the Methods section in this article's Online Repository available at www.jacionline.org. RESULTS: Serum samples from severe anaphylactic reactions show statistically significant low levels of HDL cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and apolipoproteins A1 and B, which points to their possible role as biomarkers. Specifically, HDL particles play a protective role in cardiovascular diseases. Using functional human serum cell assays, we observed impaired capacity of apolipoprotein B-depleted serum to induce macrophage cholesterol efflux in severe anaphylactic reactions. In addition, purified HDL particles from human anaphylactic sera failed to stabilize and maintain the endothelial barrier. CONCLUSION: These results encourage further research on HDL functions in severe anaphylaxis, which may lead to new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.

Introduction: Anaphylaxis is the most severe manifestation of allergic disorders. Currently, an increasing number of cells, pathways and molecules involved in the etiopathogenesis of anaphylaxis are being discovered. However, there are no conclusive biomarkers to confirm its diagnosis. Small non-coding RNAs (sncRNAs) are 18-200 nucleotide molecules that can be divided into: microRNAs (miRNAs), Piwi-interacting RNAs (piRNAs), small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNAs), small nuclear RNAs (snRNAs), transference RNA derived fragments (tRFs) and YRNA derived fragments (YRFs). These molecules participate in cell-cell communication modulating various physiological processes and have been postulated as non-invasive biomarkers of several pathologies. Therefore, in this study we characterized the serum circulating profile of other sncRNA beyond miRNAs in two populations of 5 adults and 5 children with drug- and food-mediated anaphylaxis, respectively. Methods: Samples were obtained from each patient under two different conditions: during anaphylaxis and 14 days after the reaction (control). The sncRNA analysis was carried out by Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). Results: A total of 671 sncRNAs (3 piRNAs, 74 snoRNAs, 54 snRNAs, 348 tRFs and 192 YRFs) were identified in adults with drug-induced anaphylaxis, while 612 sncRNAs (2 piRNAs, 73 snoRNAs, 52 snRNAs, 321 tRFs and 164 YRFs) were characterized in children with food-mediated anaphylaxis. However, only 33 (1 piRNA, 4 snoRNAs, 1 snRNAs, 7 tRFs and 20 YRFs) and 80 (4 snoRNAs, 6 snRNAs, 54 tRFs and 16 YRFs) of them were statistically different between both conditions, respectively. Among them, only three (Y_RNA.394, Y_RNA.781 and SCARNA2) were common to both adults and children analysis. Discussion: This study provides a differential profile of circulating serum sncRNAs beyond miRNAs in patients with anaphylaxis, postulating them as candidate biomarkers for this pathological event and as novel mediators of the reaction.

Introduction: Anaphylaxis is among the most severe manifestations of allergic disorders, but its molecular basis remains largely unknown and reliable diagnostic markers are not currently available. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) regulate several pathophysiological processes and have been proposed as non-invasive biomarkers. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate their involvement in anaphylactic reaction and their value as biomarkers. Methods: Acute (anaphylaxis) and baseline (control) serum samples from 67 patients with anaphylaxis were studied. Among them, 35 were adults with drug-induced anaphylaxis, 13 adults with food-induced anaphylaxis and 19 children with food-induced anaphylaxis. The circulating serum miRNAs profile was characterized by next-generation sequencing (NGS). For this purpose, acute and baseline samples from 5 adults with drug-induced anaphylaxis were used. RNA was extracted, retrotranscribed, sequenced and the readings obtained were mapped to the human database miRBase_20. In addition, a system biology analysis (SBA) was performed with its target genes and revealed pathways related to anaphylactic mediators signaling. Moreover, functional and molecular endothelial permeability assays were conducted with miR-375-3p-transfected cells in response to cAMP. Results: A total of 334 miRNAs were identified, of which 21 were significant differentially expressed between both phases. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) were characterized by Western blot, electron microscopy and NanoSight. A decrease of miR-375-3p levels was determined by qPCR in both serum and EVs of patients with anaphylaxis (****p<.0001). Precisely, the decrease of miR-375-3p correlated with the increase of two inflammatory cytokines: monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) and granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF). On the other hand, functional and molecular data obtained showed that miR-375-3p partially blocked the endothelial barrier maintenance and stabilization by disassembly of cell-cell junctions exhibiting low Rac1-Cdc42 levels. Discussion: These findings demonstrate a differential serum profile of circulating miRNAs in patients with anaphylaxis and exhibit the miR-375-3p modulation in serum and EVs during drug- and food-mediated anaphylactic reactions. Furthermore, the in silico and in vitro studies show a negative role for miR-375-3p/Rac1-Cdc42 in the endothelial barrier stability.

Introduction: The Unfolded Protein Response, a mechanism triggered by the cell in response to Endoplasmic reticulum stress, is linked to inflammatory responses. Our aim was to identify novel Unfolded Protein Response-mechanisms that might be involved in triggering or perpetuating the inflammatory response carried out by the Intestinal Epithelial Cells in the context of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Methods: We analyzed the transcriptional profile of human Intestinal Epithelial Cell lines treated with an Endoplasmic Reticulum stress inducer (thapsigargin) and/or proinflammatory stimuli. Several genes were further analyzed in colonic biopsies from Ulcerative Colitis patients and healthy controls. Lastly, we generated Caco-2 cells lacking HMGCS2 by CRISPR Cas-9 and analyzed the functional implications of its absence in Intestinal Epithelial Cells. Results: Exposure to a TLR ligand after thapsigargin treatment resulted in a powerful synergistic modulation of gene expression, which led us to identify new genes and pathways that could be involved in inflammatory responses linked to the Unfolded Protein Response. Key differentially expressed genes in the array also exhibited transcriptional alterations in colonic biopsies from active Ulcerative Colitis patients, including NKG2D ligands and the enzyme HMGCS2. Moreover, functional studies showed altered metabolic responses and epithelial barrier integrity in HMGCS2 deficient cell lines. Conclusion: We have identified new genes and pathways that are regulated by the Unfolded Protein Response in the context of Inflammatory Bowel Disease including HMGCS2, a gene involved in the metabolism of Short Chain Fatty Acids that may have an important role in intestinal inflammation linked to Endoplasmic Reticulum stress and the resolution of the epithelial damage.

Hybrid products could help bridge the gap as new alternative diets emerge in response to the demand for less animal protein, while recent studies suggest that the Western population is not yet ready to fully embrace an alternative protein-based diet. This study used a desirability-based mixture design to model hybrid spreadable cheese analogues (SCAs). The design combined milk protein concentrate (MPC), Tenebrio molitor (IF) and faba bean (FBP) flours, representing 7.1% of the formula. Nine SCAs with different MPC/FBP/IF ratios were formulated. Incorporating the IF negatively impacted the desirable texture properties. The FBP flour improved the texture (increasing firmness and stickiness and decreasing spreadability), but only when combined with MPC. Sensory analysis showed that hybrid SCAs (≤50% MPC) C2, C7 and C9 had a more characteristic cheesy flavour than the commercial plant-based reference, and sample C2 had a texture profile similar to the dairy reference. Samples containing IF (C7 and C9) showed a better flavour profile than that without IF (C2). The SCAs had higher protein and lower saturated fat, starch and sugar content than commercial analogues. The study suggests that incorporating alternative proteins in hybrid products can be an effective approach to reduce animal protein content, specifically dairy, in food formulations.

BACKGROUND: Anaphylaxis is the most acute and life-threatening manifestation of allergic disorders. Currently, there is a need to improve its medical management and increase the understanding of its molecular mechanisms. This study aimed to quantify the extravasation underlying human anaphylactic reactions and propose new theragnostic approaches. METHODS: Molecular determinations were performed in paired serum samples obtained during the acute phase and at baseline from patients presenting with hypersensitivity reactions. These were classified according to their severity as Grades 1, 2 and 3, the two latter being considered anaphylaxis. Tryptase levels were measured by ImmunoCAP, and serum protein concentration was quantified by Bradford assay. Human serum albumin (HSA) and haemoglobin beta subunit (HBB) levels were determined by Western blot and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, respectively. RESULTS: A total of 150 patients were included in the study. Of them, 112 had experienced anaphylaxis (83 and 29 with Grade 2 and 3 reactions, respectively). Tryptase diagnostic efficiency substantially improved when considering patients' baseline values (33%-54%) instead of the acute value threshold (21%). Serum protein concentration and HSA significantly decreased in anaphylaxis (p < .0001). HSA levels dropped with the severity of the reaction (6% and 15% for Grade 2 and 3 reactions, respectively). Furthermore, HBB levels increased during the acute phase of all hypersensitivity reactions (p < .0001). CONCLUSIONS: For the first time, the extravasation underlying human anaphylaxis has been evaluated based on the severity of the reaction using HSA and protein concentration measurements. Additionally, our findings propose new diagnostic and potential therapeutic approaches for this pathological event.

Introducción: lograr la interacción entre los equipos de salud y la educación, es fundamental para generar futuras generaciones con conocimientos y destrezas que les permitan cuidar su salud, la de sus familias y comunidades. Durante la edad escolar se desarrollan gran parte de las preferencias, costumbres y estilos personales. Objetivo: conocer los hábitos, conductas y prácticas de las niñas, niños y adolescentes de quinto y sexto año de tres instituciones educativas públicas y tres privadas de Montevideo para realizar un diagnóstico de situación que permita planificar una intervención posterior. Material y método: estudio descriptivo, observacional y transversal entre octubre y diciembre 2017. Se aplicó una encuesta anónima a escolares de quinto y sexto año de tres instituciones públicas y tres privadas de los barrios Paso de la Arena, Prado y Colón. Se solicitó consentimiento informado y autorización al comité de investigación institucional. Se utilizaron frecuencias absolutas y porcentajes. Resultados: participaron 331 escolares, 73,1% del sector público y el 26,9% del privado. En la merienda escolar, 46% consume merienda casera y 75% comprada. El 53% no consume alimentos UP en el recreo. En el hogar un 50% come frutas y un 35% come verduras todos los días, un 64,3% consume carne UP hasta 3 veces por semana. Si bien un 48,3% refiere correr todos los días, casi cuatro de cada diez nunca bailan, patinan o andan en bicicleta y dos de cada diez nunca practican deportes. El 65% destina más de 2 horas a las pantallas, 2 de cada 10 duermen menos de 6 horas y más del 50% usan el celular o miran televisión antes de dormir. Se encontraron diferencias entre el sector público y privado en la merienda casera, consumo de UP, carne y agua. Conclusiones: se realizó un diagnóstico de los hábitos, conductas y prácticas de los escolares de esas 3 zonas que permitió elegir los temas prioritarios de salud para trabajar con esas escuelas. La situación es inquietante y debe trabajarse con celeridad a nivel interinstitucional generando cambios en los hábitos de vida de los escolares, sus familias y la comunidad. Se determinó un punto de partida para poder evaluar y medir el impacto de las acciones.


Introduction: promoting interaction between health and educational teams is essential to build the necessary skills and knowledge in future generations that would enable them to take care of their health, their families' and their communities'. Most preferences, habits and personal styles are developed at school age. Objective: to get to know the habits, behaviors and practices of children and adolescents of fifth and sixth grade attending three public and three private educational institutions in Montevideo and make a diagnosis of the situation to able to plan a subsequent intervention. Material and Methods: descriptive, observational and crosssectional study between October and December 2017. An anonymous survey was applied to fifth and sixth grade students from three public and three private institutions in the Paso de la Arena, Prado and Colón neighborhoods. Informed consent and authorization were obtained from the institutional research committee. Absolute frequencies and percentages were used. Results: 331 school children participated, 73.1% from the public sector and 26.9% from the private sector. Regarding school snacks, 46% of them consume homemade snacks and 75% consume processed snacks. 53% do not consume food during recess. At home 50% eat fruits and 35% eat vegetables every day, 64.3% consume UP meat up to 3 times a week. While 48.3% report running every day, almost four out of ten have never danced, skated or ridden a bike and two out of ten have never played sports. 65% spend more than 2 hours watching screens, 2 out of 10 sleep less than 6 hours and more than 50% use the cell phone or watch television before bed. We found significant differences between the public and private sectors regarding homemade snacking, meat and water consumption. Conclusions: we carried out a diagnosis of the habits, behaviors and practices of schoolchildren in these 3 areas, which enabled us to choose priority health topics to work with these schools. The situation is disturbing and it must be addressed quickly at interinstitutional level in order to generate changes in the schoolchildren habits, their families and their communities. We have set up a starting point in order be able to evaluate and measure the impact of actions taken.

Conclusões: um diagnóstico dos hábitos, comportamentos e práticas dos escolares das 3 zonas que permitiram escolher os temas prioritários de saúde para trabalhar com estas escolas. A situação é preocupante e deve ser trabalhada rapidamente no nível interinstitucional, com o fim de gerar mudanças nos hábitos de vida dos escolares, de suas famílias e da comunidade. Determinouse um ponto de partida para poder avaliar e mensurar o impacto das ações realizadas.

The mold Alternaria alternata is one of the main sources of asthma exacerbation, being its major allergen, Alt a 1, indispensable for its development. The main objective of this work was to answer two main questions: 1) can Alt a 1 by itself (without any other context) induce an asthmatic profile in vivo?; and 2) Which molecular mechanisms take place during this phenomenon? To answer both questions, we have developed a mouse model of allergic asthma using only Alt a 1 for mice sensitization. We also made use of in-vitro cellular models and computational studies to support some aspects of our hypothesis. Our results showed that Alt a 1 can induce an asthmatic phenotype, promoting tissue remodeling and infiltration of CD45+ cells, especially eosinophils and macrophages (Siglec F+ and F4/80+). Also, we have found that Alt a 1 sensitization is mediated by the TLR4-macrophage axis.

RESUMO

The electronic structure of monolayer pentagonal palladium diselenide (PdSe2) is analyzed from the topological band theory perspective. Employing first-principles calculations, effective models and symmetry indicators, we find that the low-lying conduction bands are topologically nontrivial, protected by time reversal and crystalline symmetries. Numerical evidence supporting the nontrivial character of the bands is presented. Furthermore, we obtain a relevant physical response from the topological viewpoint, such as the spin Hall conductivity.

Anaphylaxis is a systemic hypersensitivity reaction that can be life threatening. Mechanistically, it results from the immune activation and release of a variety of mediators that give rise to the signs and symptoms of this pathological event. For years, most of the research in anaphylaxis has focused on the contribution of the immune component. However, approaches that shed light on the participation of other cellular and molecular agents are necessary. Among them, the vascular niche receives the various signals (e.g., histamine) that elicit the range of anaphylactic events. Cardiovascular manifestations such as increased vascular permeability, vasodilation, hypotension, vasoconstriction, and cardiac alterations are crucial in the pathophysiology of anaphylaxis and are highly involved to the development of the most severe cases. Specifically, the endothelium, vascular smooth muscle cells, and their molecular signaling outcomes play an essential role downstream of the immune reaction. Therefore, in this review, we synthesized the vascular changes observed during anaphylaxis as well as its cellular and molecular components. As the risk of anaphylaxis exists both in clinical procedures and in routine life, increasing our knowledge of the vascular physiology and their molecular mechanism will enable us to improve the clinical management and how to treat or prevent anaphylaxis. Key Message: Anaphylaxis, the most severe allergic reaction, involves a variety of immune and non-immune molecular signals that give rise to its pathophysiological manifestations. Importantly, the vascular system is engaged in processes relevant to anaphylactic events such as increased vascular permeability, vasodilation, hypotension, vasoconstriction, and decreased cardiac output. The novelty of this review focuses on the fact that new studies will greatly improve the understanding of anaphylaxis when viewed from a vascular molecular angle and specifically from the endothelium. This knowledge will improve therapeutic options to treat or prevent anaphylaxis.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal pain has been underdiagnosed due to several false beliefs. AIM: To determine the status of neonatal pain in newborns who are admitted to intensive care units. METHODS: Different databases were searched. Literature reviews and research reports conducted in newborns that were written in English, Spanish, or Portuguese, published between 2010 and 2020, and having free access to the full text were selected. A total of 135 articles were found, and 18 articles were finally reviewed. RESULTS: Newborns are exposed to numerous painful procedures. In order to assess their pain levels, several scales have been used, although they are sometimes not correctly interpreted. In terms of pain management, the nursing team plays a very important role based mainly on both pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches. CONCLUSION: Nursing staff members must be well trained in order to identify pain and to interpret the scales correctly. Besides, they have an important role in performing non-pharmacological procedures for pain management.

Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening systemic hypersensitivity reaction. During anaphylaxis, mediator release by effector cells causes endothelial barrier breakdown, increasing vascular permeability and leakage of fluids, which may lead to tissue edema. Although endothelial cells (ECs) are key players in this context, scant attention has been paid to the molecular analysis of the vascular system, and further analyses of this cell type are necessary, especially in humans. The protein expression pattern of human microvascular ECs was analyzed in response to sera from anaphylactic patients (EC-anaphylaxis) and sera from non-allergic subjects (EC-control) after 2 hours of contact. Firstly, a differential quantitative proteomic analysis of the protein extracts was performed by mass spectrometry using an isobaric labeling method. Second, the coordinated behavior of the identified proteins was analyzed using systems biology analysis (SBA). The proteome of the EC-anaphylaxis system showed 7,707 proteins, of which 1,069 were found to be significantly altered between the EC-control and EC-anaphylaxis groups (p-value < 0.05). Among them, a subproteome of 47 proteins presented a high rate of change (|ΔZq| ≥ 3). This panel offers an endothelial snapshot of the anaphylactic reaction. Those proteins with the highest individual changes in abundance were hemoglobin subunits and structural support proteins. The interacting network analysis of this altered subproteome revealed that the coagulation and complement systems are the main biological processes altered in the EC-anaphylactic system. The comprehensive SBA resulted in 5,512 functional subcategories (biological processes), 57 of which were significantly altered between EC-control and EC-anaphylaxis. The complement system, once again, was observed as the main process altered in the EC system created with serum from anaphylactic patients. Findings of the current study further our understanding of the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms operating in anaphylactic reactions. New target proteins and relevant signaling pathways operating in the in vitro endothelial-serum system have been identified. Interestingly, our results offer a protein overview of the micro-EC-anaphylaxis environment. The relevance of the coagulation, fibrinolytic, contact and complement systems in human anaphylaxis is described. Additionally, the untargeted high-throughput analysis used here is a novel approach that reveals new pathways in the study of the endothelial niche in anaphylaxis.

INTRODUCTION: Allergy to nonspecific lipid transfer protein (nsLTP) is the main cause of plant-food allergy in Spain. nsLTPs are widely distributed in the plant kingdom and have high cross-reactivity but extremely variable clinical expression. Little is known about the natural evolution of this allergy, which complicates management. The objective of this study was to assess the development of allergy to new plant foods in nsLTP-sensitized patients 10 years after diagnosis. METHODS: One hundred fifty-one patients showing specific IgE to nsLTP determined by ISAC (Thermofisher) were included. After clinical workup (i.e., anamnesis, skin test, and challenge when needed), these patients were divided into two groups: 113 patients allergic to one or more plant food (74.5%) and 38 patients not allergic to any plant food (25.1%). Ten years later, a telephone interview was conducted to check whether patients had developed additional allergic reactions to plant foods. RESULTS: Ten years after diagnosis, 35 of the 113 (31%) plant-food-allergic patients sensitized to nsLTP reported reactions to new, previously tolerated plant foods, mainly Rosaceae/Prunoideae fruits and nuts followed by vegetables, Rosacea/Pomoideae fruits, legumes, and cereals. Five out of 38 (13.2%) patients previously sensitized to nsLTP but without allergy to any plant food had experienced allergic reactions to some plant food: two to Rosaceae/Prunoideae fruits, two to Rosaceae/Prunoideae fruit and nuts, and one to legumes. CONCLUSION: Patients sensitized to nsLTP developed allergic reactions to other plant foods, mainly Rosaceae-Prunoideae fruits and nuts. This was more frequent among plant-food-allergic patients than among those who had never had plant-food allergy.

Two-dimensional pentagonal structures based on the Cairo tiling are the basis of a family of layered materials with appealing physical properties. In this work we present a theoretical study of the symmetry-based electronic and optical properties of these pentagonal materials. We provide a complete classification of the space groups that support pentagonal structures for binary and ternary systems. By means of first-principles calculations, the electronic band structures and the local spin textures in momentum space are analyzed for four examples of these materials, namely, PdSeTe, PdSeS, InP5 and GeBi2, all of which are dynamically stable. Our results show that pentagonal structures can be realized in chiral and achiral lattices with Weyl nodes pinned at high-symmetry points and nodal lines along the Brillouin zone boundary; these degeneracies are protected by the combined action of crystalline and time-reversal symmetries. Additionally, we computed the linear and nonlinear optical features of the proposed pentagonal materials and discuss some particular features such as the shift current, which shows an enhancement due to the presence of nodal lines and points, and their possible applications.

BACKGROUND: Anaphylaxis is the most severe manifestation of allergic disorders. The poor knowledge of its molecular mechanisms often leads to under-diagnosis. MicroRNAs (miRNA) regulate physiologic and pathologic processes, and they have been postulated as promising diagnostic markers. The main objectives of this study were to characterize the human miRNA profile during anaphylaxis and to assess their capacity as diagnostic markers and determine their participation in the molecular mechanisms of this event. METHODS: The miRNA serum profiles from the acute and baseline phase of 5 oral food-challenged anaphylactic children (<18 years old) were obtained by next-generation sequencing (NGS). From the panel of statistically significant miRNAs obtained, several candidates were selected and analyzed in 19 anaphylactic children by qPCR. We performed system biology analysis (SBA) on their target genes to identify main functions and canonical pathways. A functional in vitro assay was carried out incubating endothelial cells (ECs) in anaphylactic conditions. RESULTS: The NGS identified 389 miRNAs among which 41 were significantly different between acute and baseline samples. The high levels of miR-21-3p (fold change = 2.28, P = .006) and miR-487b-3p (fold change = 1.04, P = .039) observed by NGS in acute serum samples were confirmed in a larger group of 19 patients. The SBA revealed molecular pathways related to the inflammation and immune system regulation. miR-21-3p increased intracellularly and in acute phase serum after EC stimulation. CONCLUSIONS: These findings provide, for the first time, some insights into the anaphylactic miRNA serum profile in children and point to miR-21-3p and miR-487b-3p as candidate biomarkers. Furthermore, the SBA revealed a possible implication of these molecules in the underlying molecular mechanisms. Moreover, ECs increased miR-21-3p intracellularly and released it to the environment in response to anaphylaxis.

We analyze the symmetry and topological features of a family of materials closely related to penta-graphene, derived from it by adsorption or substitution of different atoms. Our description is based on a novel approach, called topological quantum chemistry, that allows to characterize the topology of the electronic bands, based on the mapping between real and reciprocal space. In particular, by adsorption of alkaline (Li or Na) atoms we obtain a nodal line metal at room temperature, with a continuum of Dirac points around the perimeter of the Brillouin zone. This behavior is also observed in some substitutional derivatives of penta-graphene, such as penta-PC2. Breaking of time-reversal symmetry can be achieved by the use of magnetic atoms; we study penta-MnC2, which also presents spin-orbit coupling and reveals a Chern insulator phase. We find that for this family of materials, symmetry is the source of protection for metallic and nontrivial topological phases that can be associated to the presence of fractional band filling, spin-orbit coupling and time-reversal symmetry breaking.

We present a tight-binding parametrization for penta-graphene that correctly describes its electronic band structure and linear optical response. The set of parameters is validated by comparing to ab-initio density functional theory calculations for single-layer penta-graphene, showing a very good global agreement. We apply this parameterization to penta-graphene nanoribbons, achieving an adequate description of quantum-size effects. Additionally, a symmetry-based analysis of the energy band structure and the optical transitions involved in the absorption spectra is introduced, allowing for the interpretation of the optoelectronic features of these systems.

Tomatoes provide an optimal mix of dietary antioxidants that may be responsible for the reported health benefits of tomato consumption. However, technological processing, packaging materials, and storage conditions have an impact on the nutritional quality of tomato products by affecting the stability of antioxidant nutrients to different extents. In this study, we evaluated the stability of the antioxidant compounds (lycopene, ascorbic acid, total phenols, and total flavonoids) present in commercially available tomato juices during storage extended for 12 months at three different temperatures (8, 22, and 37 degrees C). To further characterize the impact of storage conditions, two commonly used packaging materials (Tetra pack and glass bottles) were used to determine whether packaging materials affect antioxidant stability. Overall, the total lycopene, total phenolic compounds, and total flavonoids remained almost stable during storage for 12 months, regardless of the packaging material used, indicating that tomato juices maintain their nutritional value in terms of antioxidant composition during their shelf life. However, ascorbic acid was the most labile antioxidant and was markedly affected by storage conditions. The hydrophilic total antioxidant activity (TAA) paralleled the losses in ascorbic acid content, whereas the lipophilic TAA remained substantially stable throughout the storage trial.
