RESUMO

Permafrost and methane hydrates are large, climate-sensitive old carbon reservoirs that have the potential to emit large quantities of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, as the Earth continues to warm. We present ice core isotopic measurements of methane (Δ14C, δ13C, and δD) from the last deglaciation, which is a partial analog for modern warming. Our results show that methane emissions from old carbon reservoirs in response to deglacial warming were small (<19 teragrams of methane per year, 95% confidence interval) and argue against similar methane emissions in response to future warming. Our results also indicate that methane emissions from biomass burning in the pre-Industrial Holocene were 22 to 56 teragrams of methane per year (95% confidence interval), which is comparable to today.

AIMS: The aim of this study was to compare the performance of three commonly used screening tests for Cryptosporidium oocysts in fresh and frozen cattle faeces. METHODS AND RESULTS: Twenty-nine freshly voided faecal samples were collected from calves from three farms in the northwest of England. Three diagnostic tests for Cryptosporidium were carried out on each sample both before and after freezing - the modified Ziehl-Neelsen (MZN) and auramine phenol (APh) stains and a commercial enzyme immunoassay (EIA) kit, the ProSpecT Cryptosporidium Microplate assay (Remel, Lenexa, KS). Twelve samples were deemed positive by the reference standard (polymerase chain reaction, PCR). There were some discrepancies between the results of the screening tests and the levels of agreement were quantified. The sensitivity and specificity of each method was determined, with PCR as the gold standard. Sensitivity and specificity of the MZN stain was optimized when samples with fewer than two oocyst-like bodies were classified as negative. CONCLUSIONS: All three screening methods used were effective in detecting Cryptosporidium infection in both fresh and frozen calf faeces. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study has highlighted the value of determining characteristics of tests used for diagnosis and epidemiological studies.

The Scandinavian Ice Sheet (SIS) was an important component of the global ice sheet system during the last glaciation, but the timing of its growth to or retreat from its maximum extent remains poorly known. We used 115 cosmogenic beryllium-10 ages and 70 radiocarbon ages to constrain the timing of three substantial ice-margin fluctuations of the SIS between 25,000 and 12,000 years before the present. The age of initial deglaciation indicates that the SIS may have contributed to an abrupt rise in global sea level. Subsequent ice-margin fluctuations identify opposite mass-balance responses to North Atlantic climate change, indicating differing ice-sheet sensitivities to mean climate state.

A precise relative chronology for Greenland and West Antarctic paleotemperature is extended to 90,000 years ago, based on correlation of atmospheric methane records from the Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2 and Byrd ice cores. Over this period, the onset of seven major millennial-scale warmings in Antarctica preceded the onset of Greenland warmings by 1500 to 3000 years. In general, Antarctic temperatures increased gradually while Greenland temperatures were decreasing or constant, and the termination of Antarctic warming was apparently coincident with the onset of rapid warming in Greenland. This pattern provides further evidence for the operation of a "bipolar see-saw" in air temperatures and an oceanic teleconnection between the hemispheres on millennial time scales.
