RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Exclusive breastfeeding is influenced by several things, including the mother's motivation and supporting factors such as husband' support. Exclusive breastfeeding and duration of breastfeeding may relate to nutritional status of infants considering the effects that malnutrition may have. The purpose of this study is to identify the effects the duration of breastfeeding and partner support for breastfeeding mothers on the nutritional status of infants aged 0-6 months in the village of Tanjung Pauh, West Sumatera, Indonesia. DESIGN AND METHODS: This study used a quantitative study in which a cross-sectional method. Data collection was carried out using an online questionnaire distributed to the 76 breastfeeding mothers were conducted by consecutive sampling at Tanjung Pauh. Chi-square test analysis was used to determine the association between the duration of breastfeeding and partner support with the nutritional status of infants. RESULTS: There was not a significant relationship found between the duration of breastfeeding p=0.216, =0.05, p>α), and partner support for breastfeeding mothers with the nutritional status of infants aged 0-6 months in the village of Tanjung Pauh, West Sumatera (p=0.100, α 0.05, p>α). CONCLUSIONS: In Tanjung Pauh, partner support is not a factor that affects the nutritional status of infants aged 0-6 months, which may be due to the positive attitude of breastfeeding mothers toward fulfilling their babies' nutritional requirements so as to achieve a normal nutritional status.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The success of breastfeeding among post-cesarean-section mothers requires strong willingness and commitment, self-confidence, support from various professionals, and internal support (especially from their husband) and the belief and value of their family. Exclusive breastfeeding remains low in some cities such as in West Java, especially in post-cesarean-section mothers, who are influenced by certain factors. The purpose of this study is to identify husbands' role and their support for post-cesarean-section mothers in exclusive breastfeeding. DESIGN AND METHODS: This study used a qualitative phenomenological approach. with a combination of different data collection techniques: focus group discussion and in-depth interviews. Twelve husbands of post-cesarean-section mothers participated in this study. Data were analyzed by thematic content analysis. RESULTS: Four themes were identified namely knowledge about exclusive breastfeeding, the role of the father during breastfeeding, the experience of the husband and the family in supporting breastfeeding, and Women's lack of knowledge, inconvenience due to pain as the most impending factors of exclusive breastfeeding. CONCLUSION: Most fathers seem eager to be involved and assist their partners to give breastfeeding to their baby.  Furthermore, adequate support from family members, health care professionals, and employers can enable fathers to encourage and help their partners initiate and maintain exclusive breastfeeding. Fathers' emotional, practical, and physical supports are also important factors that promote successful breastfeeding and enrich the experience of mothers.

RESUMO

To identify a correlation between childbirth self efficacy and childbirth expectation of adolescent mothers in Indonesia, this cross-sectional study applied consecutive sampling. The sample was 135 adolescent mothers. Instruments utilized were structured questionnaire, including a demographic questionnaire, Child Birth Self-Efficacy Inventory (CBSEI), Childbirth Expectation Questionnaire (CEQ), Marital Adjustment Test (MAT), and London Measure of Unplanned Pregnancy (LMUP). All questionnaires were in Indonesian versions. The correlation of childbirth self-efficacy and childbirth expectation was analyzed using chi-square. Most adolescent mothers had low childbirth self-effication (63.7%). The results showed a significant correlation between childbirth self-efficacy and childbirth expectation of adolescent mothers (p = 0.003, OR 2.8, 95% CI 1.126 to 8.544). These results show that special assistance for adolescent mothers in facing childbirth is necessary to improve self-efficacy.

RESUMO

Weight gain in low birth weight infants can be improved by Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC). The sustainability of KMC implementation can be improved by increasing maternal confidence. Therefore, an appropriate method is needed in KMC education so that maternal confidence, KMC implementation, and weight gain in low birth weight infants can be increased. This study aimed to determine the effect of peer support on maternal self-confidence, KMC implementation, and infant's weight gain in four hospitals: one hospital in Jakarta, Bogor, Tangerang, and Bekasi. The study design was a randomized controlled trial with pre-post test equivalent group which involved 24 participants in both intervention and control group, respectively, based on selected criteria. The intervention provided was three sessions of education on KMC based on individual approach provided by peers. The KMC implementation and infant's weight gain were observed for five days. This study employed a maternal self-confidence questionnaire and KMC observation and weight gain form. The result showed significant differences in mother's confidence, KMC implementation, and infant's weight gain between the control group and intervention group (p = 0.001; 0.001; 0.032; 0.030). There was a significant correlation between infant's birth weight, maternal self-confidence and infant's weight gain, as well as between comorbidities and weight gain in infants. So, peer support effectively improved maternal self-confidence, KMC implementation, and weight gain in infants in hospital. Therefore, the implementation may be extended throughout home visits.

RESUMO

Premature infants tend to lose heat quickly. This loss can be aggravated when they have received an invasive procedure involving a venous puncture. This research uses crossover design by conducting 2 intervention tests to compare 2 different treatments on the same sample. This research involved 2 groups with 18 premature infants in each. The process of data analysis used a statistical independent t test. Interventions conducted in an open incubator showed a p value of .001 which statistically related to heat loss in premature infants. In contrast, the radiant warmer p value of .001 statistically referred to a different range of heat gain before and after the venous puncture was given. The radiant warmer saved the premature infant from hypothermia during the invasive procedure. However, it is inadvisable for routine care of newborn infants since it can increase insensible water loss.

RESUMO

The lack of readiness in assuming the role of a mother causes many adolescent mothers to decide not to breastfeed their babies. This study was conducted to assess the effect of the SETIA health education set on adolescent mothers' knowledge, attitude, and parenting self-efficacy score. This quasi-experimental pre-test-post-test with control group study was conducted on 66 adolescent mothers, 33 participants in each group. Data collecting used knowledge and attitude questionnaires and the Parenting Self-Efficacy Scale (PSES). This study revealed that there was a significant difference before and after intervention in knowledge, attitude, and PSE score on postpartum adolescent mothers (p = .045; p = .013; p = .001 respectively). There was an increase in knowledge ≥ 20%, attitude ≥10%, parental self-efficacy ≥ 10%, and a difference between control and intervention group (p = .001 with 95% CI: 3.587-44.876, p = .001 with 95% CI: 4.954-56.397, p = .001 respectively). Logistic regression analysis found that postpartum adolescent mothers who receive SETIA are 12.687 times more likely to have better knowledge after being controlled for mother's age and education and 0.248 times more likely to have a higher PSES score after being controlled for mother's age, education, and husband's work status than their counterpart. This study recommends the use of the SETIA health education set to provide postpartum education to adolescent mothers.
