RESUMO

UNLABELLED: Several studies involving immunohistochemical methods to assess external auditory canal epidermis have been performed with different objectives. With this method it is possible to assess the expression of various antigens such as cytokeratins, cytokines, and hyperproliferation markers among others. AIM: to revise, describe and analyze the knowledge generated by identifiable papers published on the worldwide literature about immunohistochemical hyperproliferation markers in normal external auditory canal epidermis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: systematic review of the papers published until 2009, in indexed international journals. RESULTS: Various antigens related to hyperproliferation were investigated by immunohistochemical methods among the included papers. The most studied ones were cytokeratin 16, Ki-67 and PCNA. CONCLUSIONS: most of the studies utilized external auditory canal epidermis as control sample to study external ear or middle ear cholesteatoma with immunohistochemical methods. There is a hyperproliferative antigen concentration, such as CK16, Ki-67 and PCNA, in the annulus tympanicus, adjacent meatus and tympanic regions, mainly in the lower areas.

RESUMO

Dubowitz syndrome is a rare, autosomal recessive disorder characterized by intrauterine growth retardation, short stature, microcephaly, distinct facial dysmorphism, and psychomotoric retardation. The hyper-immunoglobulin E (hyper-IgE or Job syndrome) is a primary immunodeficiency characterized by recurrent staphylococcal abscesses, recurrent cyst-forming pneumonia, and an elevated serum IgE level of >2000 IU/ml. We present the first case to our knowledge of an association between Dubowitz syndrome, hyper-IgE syndrome, and nasal polyposis (due to allergic fungal sinusitis) in a 14-year-old girl. Eosinophilic inflammatory reaction is the feature present in all three conditions. Unlike most cases of allergic fungal sinusitis, this case was not treated with an initial booster of oral steroids due to the risk of disseminated invasive fungal infection, reported in other cases of hyper-IgE syndrome. The case and its management is presented and discussed.

RESUMO

Dizziness is one of the most frequent complaints in both primary and specialized medical care facilities. Many dizzy patients, without a known organic cause, considered as having idiopathic dizziness, may have a psychiatric disorder. Besides, even organic dizziness may cause or exacerbate latent psychiatric alterations. One of the most common disorders associated with dizziness is Panic Disorder with or without Agoraphobia. The aim of this paper is to report a patients case and make a literature review on the subject.
