RESUMO

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Complications related to silicone oil tamponade are frequent. There are reports of events related to silicone oil (SO) injection during Pars Plana Vitrectomy (PPV). This case presents the unexpected injection of SO in the suprachoroidal space. The proper management of this complication along with the preventive measures are discussed. CASE PRESENTATION: A 38-year-old male presented with a one-week history of decreased vision in his right eye (OD). His visual acuity was hand motion (HM). A late-onset retinal detachment recurrence with proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) in his OD was diagnosed. Cataract surgery and PPV were scheduled. During PPV, a choroidal detachment (CD) secondary to the suprachoroidal injection of silicone oil (SO) was noted. Suprachoroidal SO was identified timely and was managed with external drainage through a posterior sclerotomy. CLINICAL DISCUSSION: Suprachoroidal silicone oil injection is a potential complication during PPV. For the management of this complication, the drainage of the silicone oil from the suprachoroidal space through a posterior sclerotomy may be considered as an option. This complication may be avoided by periodically checking the correct position of the infusion cannula during the PPV, by injecting the SO into the vitreous cavity under direct visualization and by using automated injection systems. CONCLUSION: Suprachoroidal silicone oil injection is an intraoperative complication that might be avoided by cross-checking the correct position of the infusion cannula and by injecting SO under direct visualization.

RESUMO

Purpose: To report non-operative closure of an idiopathic full thickness macular hole (FTMH) spontaneous secondary to the development of a macular epiretinal membrane (ERM). Observations: A 68-year-old woman, with no relevant medical history, and a 6-month history of decreased visual acuity in her right eye was diagnosed to have an idiopathic FTMH. The patient refused surgery and the FTMH was followed-up for seven years. The spectral domain optical coherent tomography follow-up showed the evolution of the FTMH and its spontaneous closure after development of an ERM. In the presence of an ERM with vitreo-papillary detachment, it is possible that the centripetal forces involved helped bring together the edges of the macular hole resulting in a possible spontaneous closure. Additionally and separately, the presence of an ERM may act as scaffolding for Muller cell migration and consequent macular hole closure. Conclusions and importance: Development of an ERM was followed by non-operative FTMH closure in this specific case. It is important to note, that this is an extraordinary situation in which the patient had a favorable anatomical evolution despite having rejected conventional surgical intervention. Studies aimed at determining the mechanisms and situations in which these cases occur could provide answers that help us make more appropriate decisions. To our knowledge, the present case is the first in the literature to report a spontaneous closure of a FTMH secondary to the appearance and progression of a previously non-existent ERM.

RESUMO

Heavy metal contamination in raw materials has spread widely in the United States. The high increased number of recalls in consumer products and the lack of stricter regulations in the raw materials to be used in the jewelry industry have raised concerns among consumers. Studies in low-cost jewelry have shown the presence and high content of heavy metals; this environmental problem led to a child's death after swallowing a charm containing elevated levels of lead (Pb). Exposure to heavy metals, through inhalation, mouth, and skin contact, causes adverse health effects in children and adults. Exposure to lead affects mainly the nervous system and brain development; exposure to cadmium (Cd) causes damage to liver, kidneys, and lungs, and potentially leads to cancer; exposure to nickel (Ni) causes severe dermatitis. Thus, the importance and impact of studies of this nature cannot be overstated. As heavy metal contamination has increased in the United States, this research fills an important knowledge gap between previous studies conducted on low-cost jewelry and fine jewelry. In this study, conducted in the Paso del Norte region, one hundred and forty-three pieces of fine jewelry were evaluated for the presence of heavy metals using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy. Our study showed that 61 samples (42.7 %) exhibited the presence of Ni in the metal alloy, prevailing in jewelry pieces with lower percentage of gold. Eighteen samples showed the presence of Pb in gemstones, 11 pieces of these samples (7.7 % total) had <33.3 % gold (≤10 K); however, none of the samples showed the presence of Pb in the metal alloy. Further research is needed to evaluate the bioaccessibility of Pb in these gemstones, which may pose a potential health hazard to children and adults in the US Paso del Norte region and throughout the world.

RESUMO

Carbon black (CB) is a nanomaterial with numerous industrial applications and high potential for integration into nano-enabled water treatment devices. However, few analytical techniques are capable of measuring CB in water at environmentally relevant concentrations. Therefore, we intended to establish a quantification method for CB with lower detection limits through utilization of trace metal impurities as analytical tracers. Various metal impurities were investigated in six commercial CB materials, and the Monarch 1000 CB was chosen as a model for further testing. The La impurity was chosen as a tracer for spICP-MS analysis based on measured concentration, low detection limits, and lack of polyatomic interferences. CB stability in water and adhesion to the spICP-MS introduction system presented a challenge that was mitigated by the addition of a nonionic surfactant to the matrix. Following optimization, the limit of detection (64 µg/L) and quantification (122 µg/L) for Monarch 1000 CB demonstrated the applicability of this approach to samples expected to contain trace amounts of CB. When compared against gravimetric analysis and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, spICP-MS quantification exhibited similar sensitivity but with the ability to detect concentrations an order of magnitude lower. Method detection and sensitivity was unaffected when dissolved La was spiked into CB samples at environmentally relevant concentrations. Additionally, a more complex synthetic matrix representative of drinking water caused no appreciable impact to CB quantification. In comparison to existing quantification techniques, this method has achieved competitive sensitivity, a wide working range for quantification, and high selectivity for tracing possible release of CB materials with known metal contents.

RESUMO

Carbohydrates and phytonutrients play important roles in tomato fruit's nutritional quality. In the current study, Fe3O4, MnFe2O4, ZnFe2O4, Zn0.5Mn0.5Fe2O4, Mn3O4, and ZnO nanomaterials (NMs) were synthesized, characterized, and applied at 250 mg/L to tomato plants via foliar application to investigate their effects on the nutritional quality of tomato fruits. The plant growth cycle was conducted for a total of 135 days in a greenhouse and the tomato fruits were harvested as they ripened. The lycopene content was initially reduced at 0 stored days by MnFe2O4, ZnFe2O4, and Zn0.5Mn0.5Fe2O4; however, after a 15-day storage, there was no statistical difference between the treatments and the control. Moreover, the ß-carotene content was also reduced by Zn0.5Mn0.5Fe2O4, Mn3O4, and ZnO. The effects of the Mn3O4 and ZnO carried over and inhibited the ß-carotene after the fruit was stored. However, the total phenolic compounds were increased by ZnFe2O4, Zn0.5Mn0.5Fe2O4, and ZnO after 15 days of storage. Additionally, the sugar content in the fruit was enhanced by 118% and 111% when plants were exposed to Mn3O4 and ZnO, respectively. This study demonstrates both beneficial and detrimental effects of various NMs on tomato fruit quality and highlights the need for caution in such nanoscale applications during crop growth.

RESUMO

The objective of the current study is to evaluate both the positive and negative effects of manganese-doped graphene quantum dots (GQD-Mn) on Capsicum annuum L. grown under salt stress. GQD-Mn was synthesized, characterized, and foliar-applied (250 mg/L, 120 mg/L, 60 mg/L) to C. annuum L. before and after the flowering stage, during which 100 mM of NaCl solution was introduced into the soil as salt stress. Controls were designed as absolute control (no nanomaterials or salt) and negative control (no nanomaterials only salt). Herein, we report that GQD-Mn offset the reduction of fruit production in salt-stressed C. annuum L. by around 40 %. However, based on a comprehensive analysis of normal alkanes (n-alkane) using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), we also observed that the leaf epicuticular wax profile was disturbed by GQD-Mn, as the concentration of long-chain n-alkanes was increased. Meanwhile, the content of magnesium (Mg) and zinc (Zn) indicated a potential promoted photosynthesis activity in C. annuum L leaves. We hypothesize that the optical properties of GQD-Mn allow leaves to utilize light more efficiently, thus improving photosynthetic activities in plants to acclimate salt stress. But the increased light usage also induced heat stress on the leaf surfaces, which caused n-alkanes changes. Our results provided a unique perspective on nano-plant interaction that value both beneficial and toxic effects of nanomaterials, especially when evaluating the safety of nano-enabled agriculture in areas facing harsh environmental conditions such as salinity.

RESUMO

In this study, we investigated the effects of citric acid (CA) coated copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) and their application method (foliar or soil exposure) on the growth and physiology of soybean (Glycine max). After nanomaterials exposure via foliar or soil application, Cu concentration was elevated in the roots, leaves, stem, pod, and seeds; distribution varied by plant organ and surface coating. Foliar application of CuO NPs at 300 mg/L and CuO-CA NPs at 75 mg/L increased soybean yield by 169.5% and 170.1%, respectively. In contrast, foliar and soil exposure to ionic Cu with all treatments (75 and 300 mg/L) had no impact on yield. Additionally, CuO-CA NPs at 300 mg/L significantly decreased Cu concentration in seeds by 46.7%, compared to control, and by 44.7%, compared to equivalent concentration of CuO NPs. Based on the total Cu concentration, CuO NPs appeared to be more accessible for plant uptake, compared to CuO-CA NPs, inducing a decrease in protein content by 56.3% and inhibiting plant height by 27.9% at 300 mg/kg under soil exposure. The translocation of Cu from leaf to root and from the root to leaf through the xylem was imaged by two-photon microscopy. The findings indicate that citric acid coating reduced CuO NPs toxicity in soybean, demonstrating that surface modification may change the toxic properties of NPs. This research provides direct evidence for the positive effects of CuO-CA NPs on soybean, including accumulation and in planta transfer of the particles, and provides important information when assessing the risk and the benefits of NP use in food safety and security.

RESUMO

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide. Multiple treatment options have been used over time to attempt to modify the natural progression of the disease in both proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) and diabetic macular edema (DME). These two retinal complications are the result of microvascular occlusions and vascular hyperpermeability and are considered one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness in patients of working age. It is now well demonstrated that PDR and DME are associated with increased levels of inflammatory and pro-angiogenic factors in the ocular compartment. To date, laser photocoagulation, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitors, and corticosteroids have demonstrated efficacy in their treatment in large randomized controlled trials and in real-life observational studies. This manuscript aims to provide a comprehensive review of current treatments, including the main drugs used in diabetic pathologic manifestations, as well as new therapeutic alternatives, such as extended-release intraocular devices.

RESUMO

Micronutrient deficiencies in global food chains are a significant cause of ill health around the world, particularly in developing countries. Agriculture is the primary source of nutrients required for sound health, and as the population has continued to grow, the agricultural sector has come under pressure to improve crop production, in terms of both quantity and quality, to meet the global demands for food security. The use of engineered nanomaterial (ENM) has emerged as a promising technology to sustainably improve the efficiency of current agricultural practices as well as overall crop productivity. One promising approach that has begun to receive attention is to use ENM as seed treatments to biofortify agricultural crop production and quality. This review highlights the current state of the science for this approach as well as critical knowledge gaps and research needs that must be overcome to optimize the sustainable application of nano-enabled seed fortification approaches.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic macular holes (IMH) are common and affect central vision. We demonstrate the effectiveness of 0.2 ml intravitreal perfluoropropane (C3F8) in Stage-2 IMH. CASE: A 61-year-old woman presented with blurred vision OD. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 20/125 OD and 20/20 OS. Biomicroscopy of OD evidenced a Stage-2 IMH. Intravitreal C3F8 was injected and postural measures prescribed. Optical coherence tomography 1 week after revealed posterior vitreous detachment and vitreomacular traction resolution. Full anatomical and functional recovery was achieved at week 4 and remained stable during a 6-month follow-up (BCVA 20/20 OD). CONCLUSION: Intravitreal C3F8 as initial therapy for Stage 2 IMH represents a good alternative to vitrectomy for patients with IMH.

Circumscribed choroidal hemangiomas (CCHs) are relatively rare. We report the response of a symptomatic CCH to photodynamic therapy (PDT). A 70-year-old male presented with blurred vision of the left eye (OS). Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 20/60 right eye and 20/160 OS. Biomicroscopy revealed bilateral cataracts. Diagnosis of CCH was made fundoscopically for OS and confirmed with optical coherence tomography (OCT). One session of PDT with individualized parameters was administered. After 2 months, anatomical improvement was evidenced with OCT and BCVA was 20/60. After cataract surgery, his BCVA was of 20/25 and remained stable. PDT showed excellent anatomic and visual results after a 2-year follow-up.

In the present study, titanium (IV) sulfide (TiS2) was synthesized and investigated for the removal of Cu2+ and Pb2+ ions from aqueous solutions. TiS2 nanoparticles synthesized through a solvothermal synthesis were characterized using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The average particle size for the TiS2 material was determined to be 8.03 ± 0.98 nm from the diffraction pattern. Studies were performed to examine the effects of pH, temperature, time, and interfering ions on the binding of Cu2+ and Pb2+ to the TiS2. As well isotherm studies were performed to determine the binding capacity of TiS2 for both Cu2+ and Pb2+ ions. The pH profile studies showed optimal binding occurred at pH 2 for the sorption of both Cu2+ and Pb2+ to the TiS2. The isotherm studies showed the adsorption capacities at temperatures of 4, 22, and 45°C for Cu2+ were 243, 222, and 153 mg/g, respectively. An opposite trend in the adsorption was observed for Pb2+ binding to the TiS2. The observed binding capacities for Pb2+ were 32, 166, and 357 mg/g, at temperatures of 4, 22, and 45°C, respectively. The thermodynamic parameters for binding showed a non-spontaneous process for the sorption of Cu2+ whereas a spontaneous binding process was observed for the sorption of Pb2+. Additionally, the binding of Cu2+ on TiS2 in the presence of interfering ions (Na+, K+, Mg2+, and/or Ca2+) was observed to decrease at high concentrations; however, the binding of Pb2+ was unaffected by the presence of the same cations.

RESUMO

In the present study, pyrrhotite (Fe7S8) was investigated for the removal of Pb2+ and Cu2+ ions from aqueous solution. The Fe7S8 material was prepared through a solvothermal method and was characterized using XRD. The average particle size for the nanomaterial was determined to be 29.86 ± 0.87 nm using XRD analysis and Scherrer's equation. Batch studies were performed to investigate the effects of pH, time, temperature, interfering ions, and the binding capacity of Pb2+ and Cu2+ ions to the Fe7S8 nanomaterial. During the pH profile studies, the optimum pH for the binding of Pb2+ and Cu2+ was determined to be pH 5 for both cations. Isotherm studies were conducted from which the thermodynamics and binding capacities for both Cu2+ and Pb2+ were determined. The binding capacity for Pb2+ and Cu2+ binding to the Fe7S8 were determined to be 0.039 and 0.102 mmol/g, respectively at 25°C. The thermodynamic parameters indicated a ΔG for the sorption of Pb2+ ranged from 5.07 kJ/mol to -2.45 kJ/mol indicating a non-spontaneous process was occurring. Whereas, the ΔG for Cu2+ ion binding ranged from 9.78 kJ/mol to -11.23 kJ/mol indicating a spontaneous process at higher temperatures. The enthalpy indicated an endothermic reaction was occurring for the binding of Pb2+ and Cu2+ to the Fe7S8 nanomaterial with ΔH values of 55.8 kJ/mol and 153.5 kJ/mol, respectively. Furthermore, the ΔS values for the reactions were positive indicating an increase in the entropy of the system after metal ion binding. Activation energy studies indicated the binding for both Pb2+ and Cu2+ occurred through chemisorption.

RESUMO

This is a prospective clinical assay that included six patients who were diagnosed with penetrating corneal injury, traumatic cataract, and posterior segment intraocular foreign body (IOFB). Following anterior segment repair and extraction of traumatic cataract by clear cornea phacoemulsification, a standard 25-gauge transconjunctival pars plana vitrectomy was performed to find and release the IOFB. With active suction using a 25-gauge silicone tipped cannula, the foreign body was retrieved and safely placed in the anterior chamber. After stabilization of the anterior chamber with viscoelastic injection, IOFB extraction through the main phaco incision was easily performed, followed by placement of an intraocular lens. Of the six patients, 66.6% showed a significant improvement of visual acuity. No complications associated directly with the surgical procedure occurred. Our surgical technique is a safe alternative for handling and removing a posterior IOFB. There was no need for a scleral incision.

Introduction. Lactose intolerance is a common disease in pediatrics, and its wrong diagnosis will lead to morbidity. The primary objective of this study was to assess the usefulness of an increased waist circumference during the hydrogen breath test as a predictor of lactose intolerance. The secondary objective was to analyze the impact of body mass index, waist circumference measurement, and age on the abdominal distension of patients with lactose intolerance. Population and methods. A total of 138 subjects aged 3 to 15 years were included. They underwent serial measurements of the waist circumference and hydrogen levels in the breath every 30 minutes over 3 hours during the hydrogen breath test. Results. Out of the entire sample, 35 (25.4%) patients had lactose intolerance. An increase of 0.85 cm in waist circumference compared to the baseline waist circumference results in a sensitivity of 88% and a specificity of 85% to predict lactose intolerance (odds ratio: 42.14, 95% confidence interval: 13.08-135.75, p < 0.001). The body mass index and waist circumference measurement did not affect abdominal distension (p= not significant); however, age modified the time of distension. Conclusions. A 0.85 cm increase in waist circumference compared to the baseline waist circumference during the hydrogen breath test is a useful parameter for the diagnosis of lactose intolerance in pediatrics. Variations in relation to body mass index and waist circumference did not affect the usefulness of an increased waist circumference, unlike age.

RESUMO

In the present study, pyrrhotite was used to remove arsenite and arsenate from aqueous solutions. The Fe7S8 was synthesized using a solvothermal synthetic method and it was characterized using XRD and SEM micrographs. Furthermore, the particle size for the nanomaterial Fe7S8 was determined to be 29.86 ± 0.87 nm using Scherer's equation. During the pH profile studies, the optimum pH for the binding of As (III) and As (V) was determined to be pH 4. Batch isotherm studies were performed to determine the binding capacity of As(III) and As(V), which was determined to be 14.3 mg/g and 31.3 mg/g respectively for 25°C. The thermodynamic studies indicated that the ΔG for the sorption of As(III) and As(V) ranged from -115.5 to -0.96 kJ/mol, indicating a spontaneous process was occurring. The enthalpy indicated that an exothermic reaction was occurring during the adsorption in which the ΔH was -53.69 kJ/mol and -32.51 kJ/mol for As(III) and As(V) respectively. In addition, ΔS values for the reaction had negative values of -160.46 J/K and -99.77 J/K for the adsorption of As(III) and As(V) respectively which indicated that the reaction was spontaneous at low temperatures.
