AIMS: Within the One Health paradigm, infectious disease surveillance have been developed for domestic and wild animals, leaving the role of captive non-domestic populations, especially felids in zoos and circuses, less explored. This study addresses the proximity of these captive animals to urban areas, necessitating focused monitoring for potential zoonotic enteropathogens. The present work aimed to investigate the presence of such zoonotic enteropathogens in faecal samples from captive large felid populations. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 108 faecal samples were collected in three circuses, five zoos and one rescue centre across Italy. Salmonella spp. isolation, serotyping and antimicrobial susceptibility testing were conducted on all samples. Additionally, 60 samples were also examined for gastrointestinal parasites using standard coprological techniques. Giardia spp. detection employed direct immunofluorescent staining and specific PCR, while Toxoplasma gondii was detected using PCR targeting B1 gene. A total of 51 Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica were isolated, with predominant serovariants including Infantis (43.1%), Coeln (11.8%) and Newport (11.8%). The captive felids likely act as asymptomatic carriers of foodborne Salmonella, with notable resistance ampicillin and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, no resistance to enrofloxacin was noted. Microscopic analysis revealed Toxascaris leonina eggs in 11 faecal samples (18.3%) and Giardia duodenalis cysts in one animal (1.7%). CONCLUSIONS: Captive animals in public settings may act as sources of Salmonella infection and enteroparasitosis for both occupational and general exposure. The study emphasizes the role of captive animals in antimicrobial resistance dynamics, highlighting the need for routine pathogen screening in the management practices of zoological structures.

Ring-tailed Lemur (Lemur catta) is the only surviving semi-terrestrial diurnal lemur in Madagascar. Despite being the most intensively studied of lemur taxa, only a few helminths have been described in this species. In this study we describe a persistent infection due to Trichostrongylus colubriformis in a captive population of L. catta hosted in a zoological park of northern Italy. In the context of a parasitological survey on zoo animals, we investigated parasites in a captive colony of ring-tailed lemurs within a zoological park. Parasitological analysis included necropsy of a deceased lemur in 2019, subsequent fecal sample collections in 2021-2022, followed by coprological examination and coprocolture. Morphological and molecular analyses were conducted on adult helminths, larvae and eggs, involving microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and sequencing of the ITS rDNA region. Trichostrongylidae parasites were primarily found after necropsy in the intestine of the lemur. Morphological and molecular investigations on adults and eggs/larvae recovered from feces collected at different times from lemurs of the same captive population, allowed to properly identify the parasite as T. colubriformis. To the best of our knowledge this is the first description of T. colubriformis in L. catta. Although its presence in wild populations is not necessarily implied by our finding, this parasitosis represent a cause of concern in captive lemurs, considering the possibility of interspecies transmission and the zoonotic implications.

A 5-year-old intact male Saint Bernard was presented for paraparesis following a fall down the stairs. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a chronic fragmentation of the dorsocaudal aspect of the second lumbar vertebral body (L2). Material migrated from the L2 to L3 intervertebral space through the fractured caudal vertebral endplate into the vertebral body and reached the vertebral canal, resulting in a severe extradural compressive myelopathy. Computed tomography confirmed the vertebral fragmentation. Histology of surgically removed compressive material revealed fibrocartilaginous material. The uncommon route of the extruded disc material through a fractured vertebral body makes this case of traumatic disc extrusion unusual.

The aim of this study was to assess the single and synergistic effects of fenbendazole (Fenb) and metronidazole (Metro) for the treatment of Giardia duodenalis infection in different species of non-human primates (NHPs) housed in a zoological garden of southern Italy. Moreover, the study also aimed to better define the circulation of G. duodenalis zoonotic assemblages in NHP and the potential occurrence of zoonotic transmission between the staff from the zoo and NHP. Briefly, six species that belonged to four families (Lemuridae, Cercopithecidae, Atelidae, and Hylobatidae) of NHP and housed in six cages (CG) were identified as Giardia positive and divided into two groups. Group F (N = 16 animals) was treated with Fenb (50 mg/kg, every 24 h for 5 consecutive days) and Group M (N = 7 animals) was treated with Metro (25 mg/kg, two times a day for 5 consecutive days). After the first round of therapy, all the animals were retreated for 5 days by inverting the drugs in each group. On each sampling day [study days (SDs) 3-24], the samples were tested for the presence of Giardia cysts using the FLOTAC technique. Multiple fecal tests for the antigen detection of Giardia, such as rapid ELISA and direct immunofluorescence (IFA), were performed at each sampling point only on samples that resulted in positive for Giardia cysts with FLOTAC. The efficacy of Fenb ranged from 30 to 67% and for Metro ranged from 82 to 96%. The results showed the synergistic effects of Metro and Fenb (98-100%) over the combination of Fenb and Metro (52-90%) against the infection by Giardia in NHPs. The overall k agreement between FLOTAC and IFA was reached 0.858 (p = 0.0001). In contrast, all the samples had a negative antigen result when using ELISA. At molecular analysis, six samples were confirmed positive for Giardia by nested PCR. Only two positive samples were successfully sequenced that showed 100% of identity with assemblage B. All the samples from the humans included in the study resulted in negative for Giardia cysts. Overall, the study emphasizes the need for regular monitoring of Giardia infections in NHP housed in zoos by traditional diagnostic tools combined with molecular characterization of the parasite.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of neoplasms in captive wild felids in Southern Italy zoos over a 13-year period (2008-2021) and to investigate macroscopic and histologic tumor findings in these animals. A total of 24 cases were necropsied, 9 males and 15 females, with age ranging from 6 to 19 years, including 12 tigers (Panthera tigris), 7 leopards (Panthera pardus), 4 lions (Panthera leo), and 1 black jaguar (Panthera onca). Diagnosis of neoplasm was made in 14/24 cases (58.3%). Tumors diagnosed were two cholangiocarcinomas, two hemangiosarcomas of the liver, two uterine leiomyomas, a renal adenocarcinoma, an adrenal gland adenoma, a thyroid carcinoma, an oral squamous cell carcinoma, an osteoma, a meningioma, a mesothelioma, an esophageal leiomyosarcoma, a muscoloskeletal leiomyosarcoma and a thyroid adenoma. The malignant and benign tumors were 62.5 and 37.5%, respectively. Among malignant tumors, no metastasis was observed in 50% of cases; in 10% of cases metastasis involved only regional lymph nodes; and distant metastases were found in 40% of cases. Based on our findings, the liver was the most frequent primary tumor site (25%). The high rates of malignant and widely metastatic neoplasms suggest the importance of active monitoring and management of neoplasia in these threatened and endangered species.

Aortic stenosis is the most common primary valve lesion requiring surgery or, especially for older patients, transcatheter intervention (TAVI). We showcase a successful transfemoral TAVI procedure in a very high-risk patient and an extremely tortuous S-shaped descending aorta, characterized by heavy calcifications and multiple strong resistance points. We demonstrated that transfemoral TAVI using the "buddy stiff guidewire" technique could be a feasible, simple, quick, and easy procedure able to straighten an extremely abdominal aorta tortuosity. With all techniques available and careful pre-procedural planning, and thanks to the flexibility of new generation TAVI delivery systems, it is possible to safely perform the procedure even in the most challenging patients.

Human-primate interfaces are expanding and, despite recent studies on primates from peri-urban environments, little research exists on the impact of agriculture and/or pasture areas on primate social behavior and health. We assessed how crop/pasture areas potentially alter social behavior and health of wild geladas (Theropithecus gelada) frequenting the unprotected area of Kundi (Ethiopia). We predicted that compared to pasture areas, crop areas (i) would be more challenging for geladas (prediction 1) and (ii) would have a greater impact on both aggressive and affiliative behavior, by reducing grooming time and enhancing competition (prediction 2). During January-May 2019 and December 2019-February 2020, we collected data (via scan, focal animal sampling, and video analyses) on direct human disturbance, external signs of pathologies and social behavior of 140 individuals from 14 one-male units and two all-male units. Animals experienced the highest level of human disturbance in crop areas (in line with prediction 1). Individuals from the groups preferentially frequenting crop areas showed the highest prevalence of external signs of pathologies consistent with chemical and biological contamination (alopecia/abnormally swollen parts). We collected 48 fecal samples. Samples from frequent crop users contained the highest rates of parasitic elements/gram (egg/larva/oocyst/cyst) from Entamoeba histolytica/dispar, a parasite common in human settlements of the Amhara region. In crop areas, subjects spent less time grooming but engaged in lower rates of intense aggression (in partial agreement with prediction 2). We speculate that the reduction in social behavior may be a tactic adopted by geladas to minimize the likelihood of detection and maximize food intake while foraging in crops.

BACKGROUND: The study determines the pharmacokinetic profiles of dexmedetomidine (DEX), ketamine (KET) and its active metabolite, norketamine (NORKET), after simultaneous administration. Moreover, the study evaluates the sedative effects of this protocol, its influence on the main physiological variables and the occurrence of adverse effects. METHODS: Eighteen captive tigers were initially administered with a mixture of DEX (10 µg/kg) and KET (2 mg/kg) by remote intramuscular injection. In case of individual and specific needs, the protocol was modified and tigers could receive general anaesthesia, propofol or additional doses of DEX and KET. RESULTS: Based on the immobilisation protocol, nine animals were assigned to the standard protocol group and the other nine to the non-standard protocol group. Higher area under the first moment curve (AUMC0-last) and longer mean residence time (MRT0-last) (P<0.05) were observed in the non-standard protocol group for DEX, KET and NORKET, and higher area under the concentration-time curve from administration to the last measurable concentration (AUC0-last) only for KET. The KET metabolisation rate was similar (P=0.296) between groups. No differences between groups were detected in terms of stages of sedation and recoveries. All physiological variables remained within normality ranges during the whole observation period. During the hospitalisation period, no severe adverse reactions and signs of resedation were observed. CONCLUSION: The simultaneous administration of 10 µg/kg of DEX and 2 mg/kg of KET can be considered an effective protocol for chemical immobilisation of captive tigers, along with dosage adjusments or when other drugs are needed.

Abstract Animals reared in restricted environments are highly susceptible to gastrointestinal infection by helminths and protozoa and therefore zoos are characterized as being parasite-rich environments. Successful implementation of control programs of these parasites in zoo environment depends upon precise and rapid diagnosing of gastrointestinal infections. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the role of the Mini-FLOTAC technique in combination with Fill-FLOTAC for rapidly diagnosing parasitic infections in zoo mammals. Fecal samples were collected from 70 animals in four different zoos located in central and southern Italy. All the samples were analyzed using Mini-FLOTAC in combination with Fill-FLOTAC. Out of the 70 pooled samples examined, 80% (24/30) were positive for at least one parasite. Among the gastrointestinal nematodes, Strongyles were the most frequent (40%), followed by Trichuris spp. (23.3%), Parascaris spp. (13.3%) and Capillaria spp. (3.3%). Among the protozoa, Blastocystis spp., Giardia spp. and Eimeria spp. were detected in 6.6%, 3.3% and 3.3%, respectively. These results show that Mini-FLOTAC in combination with Fill-FLOTAC can be used, not only for rapidly diagnosing parasitic infections in zoo mammals, but also for monitoring control programs in which large numbers of fecal samples need to be examined rapidly and reliably.


Resumo Animais criados em ambiente restritos são altamente suscetíveis a infecção gastrointestinal por helmintos e protozoários, constituindo os zoológicos em ambientes com alta contaminação por parasitos. O sucesso da implementação de programas de controle contra estes parasitos em zoológicos depende do rápido diagnóstico das infecções por parasitas gastrointestinais. O objetivo deste estudo foi demonstrar o papel da técnica do Mini-FLOTAC em combinação com o Fill-FLOTAC no diagnóstico rápido das infecções parasitárias em mamíferos em zoológicos. Amostras de fezes foram coletadas de 70 animais de quatro diferentes zoológicos no centro e sudoeste da Itália. Todas as amostras foram analisadas pela técnica do Mini-FLOTAC em combinação com o Fill-FLOTAC. Do total de 70 pools de fezes examinadas, 80% (24/30) foram positivas para pelo menos um parasito. Entre os nematoides gastrointestinais a maior frequência foi observada para estrongilídeos (40%), seguida por Trichuris spp. (23,3%), Parascaris spp. (13,3%) e Capillaria spp. (3,3%). Entre os protozoários Blastocystis spp., Giardia spp. e Eimeria spp. foram detectados em 6,6%, 3,3% e 3,3%, respectivamente. Estes resultados demonstram que a técnica do Mini-FLOTAC em combinação com o Fill-FLOTAC pode ser utilizada não somente para o diagnóstico rápido das infecções parasitárias em mamíferos em zoológicos, mas também no monitoramento de programas de controle onde grande número de amostras fecais devem ser examinadas de forma rápida e confiável.

An 18-month-old intact female lioness (Panthera leo) was referred to the Clinica Veterinaria Roma Sud for evaluation of bilateral cataracts. Phacoemulsification and implantation of +30 diopter intraocular lens (IOL) were performed bilaterally. Seven years after surgery, the IOL remained centrally positioned and the patient had normal activity.


Phaco-émulsification bilatérale et implantation d'une lentille intra-oculaire chez une jeune lionne africaine (Panthera leo) . Une lionne entière âgée de 18 mois (Panthera leo) a été dirigée à la Clinica Veterinaria Roma Sud pour l'évaluation de cataractes bilatérales. La phaco-émulsification et l'implantation de lentilles intraoculaires dioptriques +30 (LID) ont été réalisées bilatéralement. Sept années après la chirurgie, les LID sont demeurées en position centrale et la patiente s'adonnait à des activités normales.(Traduit par Isabelle Vallières).

OBJECTIVE To investigate the performance of a portable blood glucose meter (PBGM) designed for use in humans (hPBGM) and a PBGM designed for use in dogs and cats (vPBGM) when measuring blood glucose (BG) concentration in tigers (Panthera tigris) and lions (Panthera leo). DESIGN Method comparison and diagnostic accuracy study. SAMPLES 53 blood samples from tigers (n = 27) and lions (26). PROCEDURES BG concentration was measured with 2 identical hPBGMs, 2 identical vPBGMs, and a reference laboratory analyzer. Bland-Altman bias plots and Passing-Bablok regression analysis were used to assess agreement. Sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values with corresponding 95% confidence intervals were calculated for use in assessing diagnostic accuracy of the investigated PBGMs. RESULTS Bias (95% limits of agreement) was -4.3 mg/dL (-46.3 to 37.6 mg/dL) for the hPBGM, -9.3 mg/dL (-64.6 to 46.0 mg/dL) for the vPBGM on canine setting, and 2.3 mg/dL (-47.9 to 52.6 mg/dL) for the vPBGM on feline setting. The hPBGM had better overall repeatability (coefficient of variation, 3.73%) than the vPBGM on canine (9.29%) or feline (9.44%) setting. Total error for the hPBGM, vPBGM on canine setting, and vPBGM on feline setting was 11.8%, 27.7%, and 20.9%, respectively. None of the PBGMs complied with the maximum allowable total error suggested by current guidelines when measuring BG in tigers and lions with hypo-, normo-, or hyperglycemia. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Results indicated that the PBGMs evaluated were inadequate for measuring BG concentration in tigers and lions.

BACKGROUND: New epidemiological data on bacterial and parasitic infections in 24 Italian wall lizards, namely Podarcis sicula (mainland population) and P. sicula klemmerii (insular population) in southern Italy were provided. To achieve this goal, samples were collected from individuals belonging to the two populations and analysed by microbiological and parasitological methods. RESULTS: A wide range of bacteria (e.g. Pantoea spp., Citrobacter spp., Morganella spp., Pseudomonas, Enterobacter spp., Staphylococcus spp. and Escherichia coli) and parasites (e.g. Ophionyssus natricis, coccidia, Dicrocoelidae) were detected in both P. sicula and P. sicula klemmerii individuals. Insular population presented similar bacterial and parasitic diversity to its mainland counterpart. Ampicillin was the antimicrobial with the highest resistance rate. CONCLUSION: This study highlighted various bacteria and parasites, some of them potentially zoonotic. Further studies are needed to better understand the epidemiology and transmission routes of these pathogens along with their impact on the welfare and behaviour of Italian wall lizards.

BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis (AR) and allergic asthma are caused by an IgE-mediated inflammatory reaction. Probiotics may exert anti-inflammatory and immune-modulatory activity. Thus, this study aimed at investigating whether a Bifidobacteria mixture could be able to relieve nasal symptoms, and affect quality of life (QoL) in children with AR and intermittent asthma due to Parietaria allergy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study was conducted as placebo-controlled, double-blinded, and randomized. Globally, 40 children (18 males; mean age 9 ± 2.2 years) were enrolled. They were treated with probiotics or placebo: 1 sachet/day for 4 weeks. AR symptoms, and QoL were assessed at baseline and after treatment. Use of rescue medications, such as cetirizine syrup and salbutamol spray, was also permitted and recorded. RESULTS: Children treated with probiotic mixture achieved a significant improvement of symptoms (p < 0.005), and QoL ((p < 0.001). Placebo group had worsening of symptoms (p < 0.005) and QoL (p < 0.001). The use of rescue medications was overlapping in the two groups. The intergroup analysis showed that probiotic mixture was significantly superior than placebo for all parameters. CONCLUSIONS: The current study demonstrated that a Bifidobacteria mixture was able of significantly improving AR symptoms and QoL in children with pollen-induced AR and intermittent asthma. BACKGROUND: Several concerns have emerged about the higher risk of very late stent thrombosis (ST) with first generation drug-eluting stent (DES), especially in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). New generation DES have demonstrated reduction in ST at mid-term follow-up, however no data are available on long-term follow-up. Therefore, the aim of this study was to report long-term results of the RACES-MI trial conducted to compare Everolimus-Eluting Stent (EES) vs Sirolimus-Eluting Stent (SES) in patients undergoing primary PCI. METHODS: The RACES-MI trial enrolled consecutive STEMI patients admitted within 12h of symptom onset, undergoing primary PCI with stent implantation at a tertiary center with 24-hour primary PCI capability, who were randomly assigned to SES or EES. Primary endpoint of this analysis is major adverse cardiac events (MACE) at long-term follow-up. Secondary endpoints are 1) death; 2) reinfarction; 3) definite or probable ST; 4) target-vessel revascularization (TVR) at long-term follow-up. RESULTS: From April 2007 to May 2009 500 patients with STEMI were randomized to EES (n=250) or SES (n=250). No difference was observed between the groups either in baseline clinical characteristics, in the number of implanted stent or total stent length per patient. However, a larger reference diameter was observed with SES (3.35±0.51 mm vs 3.25±0.51 mm, p=0.001), whereas patients randomized to EES received Gp IIb-IIIa inhibitors more often (54.4% vs 42.4%, p=0.006). At long-term follow-up (2132±528 days), EES was associated with a significant reduction in MACE (23.8 vs 34.1%, adjusted p=0.028), ST (2.5% vs 7.7%, adjusted p=0.009), without any difference in death (8.7% vs 11.4%, adjusted p=0.47), reMI (9.3% vs 13.1%; adjusted p=0.18) and TVR (8.6% vs 12.3%, adjusted p=0.31). CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that among STEMI patients undergoing primary PCI EES, as compared to SES, is associated with significant reduction in MACE and ST at long-term follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Drug-eluting stent has been shown to reduce the risk of repeated revascularization. However, as shown for first-generation drug-eluting stent, they may be counterbalanced by a potential higher risk of stent thrombosis, especially among ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction patients. In addition, diabetes has been shown to be an independent predictor of poor survival and repeated target vessel revascularization. No data have been reported so far on the long-term benefits and safety of new-generation drug-eluting stent in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction according to diabetes. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate whether diabetes may impact on the benefits from everolimus-eluting stent versus first-generation drug-eluting stent in patients undergoing primary angioplasty. METHODS: We combined data from two randomized trials (PaclitAxel or Sirolimus-Eluting Stent vs Bare-Metal Stent in Primary Angioplasty and randomized comparison of everolimus-eluting stents and sirolimus-eluting stents in patients with ST elevation myocardial infarction) including consecutive ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction patients admitted within 12 h of symptom onset undergoing primary angioplasty and stent implantation at a tertiary centre with 24-h primary percutaneous coronary intervention capability. Primary endpoint of this study was major adverse cardiac events at 3-year follow-up. Secondary endpoints were as follows: (1) death, (2) reinfarction, (3) definite or probable ST and (4) target vessel revascularization at 3-year follow-up. No patient was lost to follow-up. RESULTS: Our population is represented by 680 ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction patients treated with drug-eluting stent (180 enrolled in the PaclitAxel or Sirolimus-Eluting Stent vs Bare-Metal Stent in Primary Angioplasty trial, treated with first-generation drug-eluting stent, and 500 patients in the randomized comparison of everolimus-eluting stents and sirolimus-eluting stents in patients with ST elevation myocardial infarction, randomized to everolimus-eluting stent or sirolimus-eluting stent). Diabetes was observed in a total of 178 patients (26.1%) and associated with higher major adverse cardiac events, mortality, reinfarction, stent thrombosis and target vessel revascularization. Similar outcome was observed in terms of overall major adverse cardiac events, mortality, recurrent myocardial infarction, target vessel revascularization, with everolimus-eluting stent as compared to first-generation drug-eluting stent in both diabetic and non-diabetic patients, whereas everolimus-eluting stent was associated with a significantly lower rate of stent thrombosis only in diabetic patients (1.6% vs 9.6%, hazard ratio (95% confidence interval) = 0.15 (0.02-0.98), p = 0.04) whereas no difference was observed in non-diabetic patients. CONCLUSION: This study shows that among ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction patients undergoing primary angioplasty, diabetes is associated with a significantly worse outcome at 3-year follow-up. A similar outcome was observed between everolimus-eluting stent and first-generation drug-eluting stent in non-diabetic patients, whereas among diabetic patients everolimus-eluting stent was associated with a significant reduction in stent thrombosis.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent respiratory infections (RRI), such as the presence of at least one of the following criteria: i) >6 RI per year; ii) >1 RI per month involving upper airways from September to April; iii) >3 RI involving lower airways, constitute a social problem for both their pharmaco-economic impact and the burden for the family. However, several treatment have been proposed with controversial results. OBJECTIVE: As resveratrol plus carboxymethyl-ß-glucan is presently available as solution for aerosol, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of this compound, compared to saline solution, whether it is able to prevent RRI in children. DESIGN: The study was designed as real-life, randomized. Globally, 82 children (49 males, mean age 8.1 ± 2.6 years) with acute rhinopharyngitis and RRI were enrolled. Resveratrol plus carboxymethyl-ß-glucan or saline isotonic solution was randomly (ratio 1:1) administered immediately after an anti-infective and anti-inflammatory 10-day treatment (tiamphenicol associated with acetylcysteine plus beclomethasone dipropionate) for the acute rhinopharyngitis. Investigated treatments lasted 20 days. Days with respiratory symptoms, fever, medication use, medical visits, and school absences were evaluated. Children were visited 30, 60, and 90 days after starting treatments. RESULTS: The active compound was able to significantly reduce the number of days with nasal obstruction (p < 0.001), rhinorrhea (p < 0.001), sneezing (p < 0.001), cough (p = 0.002), fever (p < 0.001), medication use (p < 0.001), medical visits (p < 0.001), and school absence (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: This preliminary and real-life study could suggest that an aerosolized solution containing resveratrol plus carboxymethyl-ß-glucan might exert preventive effects in children with RRI.

The primary endpoint was a major adverse cardiac event at 3-year follow-up. The secondary endpoints were death, reinfarction, definite or probable stent thrombosis, and target vessel revascularization at 3-year follow-up. No patient was lost to follow-up. RESULTS: From April 2007 to May 2009, 500 patients with STEMI were randomized to EES (n = 250) or SES (n = 250). No difference was observed in terms of baseline demographic and clinical characteristics between the groups. No difference was observed between the groups in terms of number of implanted stents per patient or total stent length. However, a larger reference diameter was observed with SES (3.35 ± 0.51 mm vs. 3.25 ± 0.51 mm, p = 0.001), whereas patients randomized to EES more often received glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitors (54.4% vs. 42.4%, p = 0.006). Follow-up data were available in all patients (1,095 ± 159 days). No significant difference was observed between EES and SES in major adverse cardiac events (16% vs. 20.8%, adjusted hazard ratio [HR]: 0.75 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.5 to 1.13], p = 0.17), cardiac death (4.4% vs. 5.6%, adjusted HR: 0.77 [95% CI: 0.35 to 1.71], p = 0.53), recurrent MI (6.4% vs. 10%, adjusted HR: 0.62 [95% CI: 0.33 to 1.16], p = 0.13), and target vessel revascularization (4.8% vs. 4.8%, adjusted HR: 1.00 [95% CI: 0.45 to 2.32], p = 0.99). However, EES was associated with a significant reduction in stent thrombosis (1.6% vs. 5.2%, adjusted HR: 0.3 [95% CI: 0.1 to 0.92], p = 0.035). CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that among STEMI patients undergoing primary angioplasty, EES has similar efficacy as SES, but is associated with a significant reduction in stent thrombosis. OBJECTIVE: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is caused by an IgE-mediated inflammatory reaction consequent to the exposure to causal allergen. Resveratrol is a natural non-flavonoid polyphenol, exerting anti-inflammatory activity; ß-glucan is a polysaccharide with immuno-modulatory properties. Thus, this study aimed to investigate whether these combined compounds are able of relieving nasal symptoms in children with AR due to pollen allergy. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: The present study was conducted as placebo-controlled, double-blinded, and randomized. Globally, 68 children (36 males; mean age 7.9 years) were treated with resveratrol plus ß-glucan or placebo (the diluent of active drug) two sprays (100 µL/spray) in each nostril three times/day for 2 months. Nasal symptoms, including itching, sneezing, rhinorrhea, and obstruction, were assessed at baseline and after treatment. Use of rescue medication, such as cetirizine syrup, was also evaluated. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov ID NCT02130440. RESULTS: Children treated with active drug achieved a significant reduction in all nasal symptoms: itching (p = 0.0001), sneezing (p = 0.0009), rhinorrhea (p = 0.009), and obstruction (0.002) as well as antihistamine use (p = 0.003). Placebo did not affect nasal complaints and cetirizine use. The intergroup analysis showed that active treatment was significantly superior to placebo about reduction of AR symptoms and rescue medication use. CONCLUSIONS: The present preliminary study firstly showed that intranasal resveratrol plus carboxymethyl-ß-glucan is capable of significantly improving nasal symptoms in children with pollen-induced AR.
