RESUMO

The male genitalia of pholcid spiders, which is one of the most species-rich spider families, are characterized by a procursus, which is a morphologically diverse projection of the copulatory organ. It has been shown that the procursus interacts with the female genitalia during copulation. Here, we investigate the function of the procursus in Gertschiola neuquena, a species belonging to the early branched and understudied subfamily Ninetinae, using behavioural and morphological data. Although many aspects of the copulatory behaviour of G. neuquena follow the general pattern described for the family, males use only one pedipalp during each copulation. Based on our micro-CT analysis of cryofixed mating pairs using virgin females, we can show that the long and filiform procursus is inserted deeply into the unpaired convoluted female spermatheca, and the intromittent sclerite, the embolus, is rather short and stout only reaching the most distal part of the female sperm storage organ. Histological data revealed that sperm are present in the most proximal part of the spermatheca, suggesting that the procursus is used to allocate sperm deeply into the female sperm storage organ. This represents the first case of a replacement of the sperm allocation function of the intromittent sclerite in spiders.

PURPOSE: Adolescence represents an important window for gonadal development. The aim of this review is to carry out a critical excursus of the most recent literature on endogenous and exogenous risk factors related to testicular function, focusing the research on adolescence period. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search within PubMed was performed to provide a summary of currently available evidence regarding the impact on adolescence of varicocele, cryptorchidism, cancer, diabetes, lifestyle factors, endocrine disruptors, obesity and sexually transmitted diseases. We focused on human studies that evaluated a possible impact of these factors on puberty timing and their effects on andrological health. RESULTS: Evidence collected seems to suggest that andrological health in adolescence may be impaired by several factors, as varicocele, cryptorchidism, and childhood cancer. Despite an early diagnosis and treatment, many adolescents might still have symptoms and sign of a testicular dysfunction in their adult life and at the current time it is not possible to predict which of them will experience andrological problems. Lifestyle factors might have a role in these discrepancies. Most studies point out towards a correlation between obesity, insulin resistance, alcohol, smoking, use of illegal drugs and testicular function in pubertal boys. Also, endocrine disruptors and sexually transmitted diseases might contribute to impair reproductive health, but more studies in adolescents are needed. CONCLUSION: According to currently available evidence, there is an emerging global adverse trend of high-risk and unhealthy behaviors in male adolescents. A significant proportion of young men with unsuspected and undiagnosed andrological disorders engage in behaviors that could impair testicular development and function, with an increased risk for later male infertility and/or hypogonadism during the adult life. Therefore, adolescence should be considered a key time for intervention and prevention of later andrological diseases.

OBJECTIVE: As myo-inositol (MI) deficiency has been associated with impaired sperm quality, we aimed to assess its effects on sperm kinetics objectively, using a computer-aided sperm analysis (CASA) system. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We evaluated 59 normokinetic semen samples with nonlinear progressive motility before and after incubation with a solution of MI. The samples were collected from healthy subjects aged 20-40 years who were attending our Laboratory of Seminology for fertility screening. RESULTS: We found a significant increase in linear progressive motility (28.2% ± 10.8 vs. 30.9% ± 11.0, T0 vs. T1 respectively; p <0.001) and a significant reduction in nonlinear progressive motility (21.0% ± 9.9 vs. 18.1% ± 10.2, T0 vs. T1 respectively; p <0.001) after incubation with MI. CASA analysis revealed a significant increase in curvilinear velocity (VCL) (65.0 ± 19.0 vs. 67.9 ± 20.4 µm/s, T0 vs. T1 respectively; p = 0.049). Overall, there was an increase in VCL in 42/59 samples (about 70%), mainly from non-smokers. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that MI has a positive in vitro effect on semen samples, but confirmation is needed through further studies taking into account factors capable of modulating MI response, such as smoking and obesity.
