RESUMO

Nile tilapia is the most commercially important fish in Chiapas as well as in other parts of the world. An understanding of parasite infection dynamics in tilapia may assist in applying proper prophylactic measures for reducing the loss of fish caused by parasitic diseases. Different environments and culture systems may imply different infection dynamics; therefore, the present study identified and compared the infection parameters (prevalence, mean abundance, and intensity) of parasites of Oreochromis niloticus cultured in floating cages and ponds. A total of 18 metazoan parasite taxa were recovered from gills, skin, fins and intestines of 310 specimens from floating cages and ponds. Fourteen species of parasites were found in floating cages: 8 monogenean species, 1 nematode, 1 digenea, 1 crustacea, 3 protozoans. In ponds, 16 parasite taxa were reported: 11 were monogeneans species, 4 protozoans and 1 crustacean. In both systems, monogeneans (Cichlidogyrus sclerosus, C. tilapiae, Gyrodactylus cichlidarum) and protozoans (Trichodina compacta) were most prevalent. Tilapia in ponds sustained higher parasitic infections than those in floating cages (p < 0.05). The Canonical Correspondence Analysis showed two groups: the first grouped the ponds, associated with high values of nitrite, nitrate, ammonia, conductivity, temperature, and the abundance of the ectoparasites C. halli, C. dossoui, Scutogyrus longicornis, C. sclerosus and T. compacta. The second group grouped the cages, associated with Clinostomum marginatum, Apiosoma piscicola, Lernea sp., and Contracaecum sp. and a high dissolved oxygen concentration. Our findings suggest that monitoring programs are required to improve the sanitary conditions of tilapia cultures in Chiapas.

RESUMO

A systematic review and meta-analysis of on farm management and water quality as risk factors triggering pathogen outbreaks in tilapia culture is presented. A total of 121 papers from 28 countries, 37 devoted to management and 84 to water quality associated with the presence of pathogens in tilapia culture were analysed. Most of research has been made on ponds, focusing on bacteria and metazoans. Meta-analysis reveals the proportion of research showing statistical inferences between management (34%), water quality (38% for bacteria and 16.2% for metazoans) and pathogen outbreaks. The most cited parameters related to pathogens outbreaks were temperature (>30°C), dissolved oxygen (<5.0 mg/L), pH (<8.0) and ammonia (1.0 >mg/L) 65, 38, 32 and 34 papers, respectively. However, statistical inference was <20%. Meta-analysis reveals tendencies between high temperatures (30-35°C), low dissolved oxygen (<5 mg/L) and high NH3 (1-5 mg/L) with pathogen outbreaks. Despite the knowledge about the relationship between management and water quality as factors for pathogen effects, most information is descriptive and empirical. Future research on tilapia culture outbreaks should be focused on the effects of multiple stressors affecting tilapia pathogen outbreaks, thereby generating strategies to prevent diseases and financial losses.

RESUMO

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mental health is a fundamental component of a healthy lifestyle. Currently this notion has become universal and has permeated the public consciousness, society and the political agenda of public health programs. In Spain, as a result of the pandemic due to the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), this health issue has been revived and has also been the subject of parliamentary debates. This idea is not new because within the Greco-Roman medical tradition continued by the Arabs, all the great authors included in their texts chapters on general hygienic-dietary norms to lead a healthy life, their own medical genre called "health regimen". In Al-Andalus, the Jewish doctor Maimonides (1138-1204) was nine centuries ahead of the concept of mental health or hygiene of the soul and its disorders, topics now included in the field of psychology, psychiatry and psychosomatic medicine. Maimonides drew up a body of doctrine on mental disorders and systematized a complete management of them from a comprehensive view of the patient as a person, based on four preventive and therapeutic measures to achieve mental balance: a) a general health regime; b) mental and emotional re-education; c) measures to reduce anxiety; and d) specific antidepressant medication. These recommendations are the most original made up to then, even many of them are still valid today due to their modernity. In this historical context, Maimonides constitutes a scientific bridge between the Middle Ages and our era.

AIM: To determine the prevalence of ankyloglossia in newborns with breastfeeding problems and to assess the effectiveness of frenotomy in the maintenance of exclusive breastfeeding at 1 month, 3 months and 6 months in newborns at an Andorran Hospital. STUDY DESIGN: A descriptive, cross-sectional, population-based, retrospective study of newborns over a 5-year period (2016-2020) was performed. Nine medical history variables (presence or absence of ankyloglossia and type of frenulum, surgical intervention or not, first degree hereditary component, gender, Rh and blood group, type of breastfeeding, causes of cessation and duration of breastfeeding) related to perinatal and feeding history were collected confidentially and anonymously. The Coryllos classification was used for the diagnosis of ankyloglossia. Descriptive analysis of the data, Chi-square test and prevalence ratios were calculated. RESULTS: A total of 2333 newborns were included in the study (50.02% males and 49.98% females). The prevalence of ankyloglossia was 7.84% (n = 183). Of the infants examined, 136 underwent lingual frenotomy. The number of infants who maintained exclusive breastfeeding, both surgically and non-surgically treated, was no statistically significant differences at 1 month (p = 0.65), 3 months (p = 0.61) and 6 months (p = 0.49). CONCLUSIONS: Lingual frenotomy was only performed on patients with ankyloglossia associated with ineffective suction that causes BF difficulties. The realization or not of frenotomy was not a determining factor for the maintenance of breastfeeding at 1 month, 3 months and 6 months. On the contrary, it was a determining factor for the prolongation of mixed feeding. Ankyloglossia related to breastfeeding difficulties should be treated by a multidisciplinary team.

RESUMO

Land use change threatens the ecological integrity of tropical rivers and streams; however, few studies have simultaneously analyzed the taxonomic and functional responses of tropical macroinvertebrates to riparian forest conversion. Here, we used community structure, functional diversity, and stable isotope analyses to assess the impacts of riparian deforestation on macroinvertebrate communities of streams in southern Mexico. Monthly sampling during the dry season was conducted in streams with riparian forest (forest streams), and in streams with pasture dominating the riparian vegetation (pasture streams). Samples were collected for water quality (physical-chemical variables, nutrient concentrations, and total suspended solids), organic matter (leaf litter abundance and algal biomass), and macroinvertebrate abundance and diversity. Higher temperature, conductivity, suspended solids, and chlorophyll a were detected in pasture streams, while nitrate concentrations and leaf litter biomass were greater in forest streams. Macroinvertebrate density was higher in pasture sites, while no differences in taxonomic diversity and richness were found between land uses. Functional evenness was greater in forest streams, while richness and divergence were similar between land uses, despite differences in taxonomic composition. Environmental variables were associated with taxa distribution but not with functional traits, suggesting current conditions still promote redundancy in ecological function. Isotopic analyses indicated consumers in pasture streams were enriched in 13C and 15N relative to forest streams, potentially reflecting the higher algal biomass documented in pasture systems. Isotopic niches were broader and more overlapped in pasture streams, indicating more generalist feeding habits. No significant losses of taxonomic or functional diversity were detected in pasture streams. However, changes in trophic ecology suggest landscape-level processes are altering macroinvertebrate feeding habits in streams. The changes we observed in habitat, water quality, and macroinvertebrate community were related to the removal of the riparian vegetation, suggesting the structure and function of the focal systems would benefit from riparian restoration.

RESUMO

Helicobacter pylori is a gram-negative, spiral-shaped bacterial pathogen and the causative agent for gastritis, peptic ulcer disease and classified as a WHO class I carcinogen. While the prevalence of H. pylori infections in Africa is among the highest in the world, the incidence of gastric cancer is comparably low. Little is known about other symptoms related to the H. pylori infection in Africa and the association with certain phenotypes of bacterial virulence. We established a network of study sites in Nigeria (NG) and South Africa (ZA) to gain an overview on the epidemiological situation. In total 220 isolates from 114 patients were analyzed and 118 different patient isolates examined for the presence of the virulence factors cagA, vacA, dupA, their phylogenetic origin and their resistance against the commonly used antibiotics amoxicillin, clarithromycin, metronidazole and tetracycline. We report that H. pylori isolates from Nigeria and South Africa differ significantly in their phylogenetic profiles and in their expression of virulence factors. VacA mosaicism is intensive, resulting in m1-m2 vacA chimeras and frequent s1m1 and s1m2 vacA subtypes in hpAfrica2 strains. Gastric lesions were diagnosed more frequent in Nigerian versus South African patients and H. pylori isolates that are resistant against one or multiple antibiotics occur frequently in both countries.

RESUMO

Tropical small-scale fisheries are typical for providing complex multivariate data, due to their diversity in fishing techniques and highly diverse species composition. In this paper we used for the first time a supervised Self-Organizing Map (xyf-SOM), to recognize and understand the internal heterogeneity of a tropical marine small-scale fishery, using as model the fishery fleet of San Pedro port, Tabasco, Mexico. We used multivariate data from commercial logbooks, including the following four factors: fish species (47), gear types (bottom longline, vertical line+shark longline and vertical line), season (cold, warm), and inter-annual variation (2007-2012). The size of the xyf-SOM, a fundamental characteristic to improve its predictive quality, was optimized for the minimum distance between objects and the maximum prediction rate. The xyf-SOM successfully classified individual fishing trips in relation to the four factors included in the model. Prediction percentages were high (80-100%) for bottom longline and vertical line + shark longline, but lower prediction values were obtained for vertical line (51-74%) fishery. A confusion matrix indicated that classification errors occurred within the same fishing gear. Prediction rates were validated by generating confidence interval using bootstrap. The xyf-SOM showed that not all the fishing trips were targeting the most abundant species and the catch rates were not symmetrically distributed around the mean. Also, the species composition is not homogeneous among fishing trips. Despite the complexity of the data, the xyf-SOM proved to be an excellent tool to identify trends in complex scenarios, emphasizing the diverse and complex patterns that characterize tropical small scale-fishery fleets.

RESUMO

AIM: To study the interleukin-1 (IL-1) pathway as a therapeutic target for liver fibrosis in vitro and in vivo using the ATP-binding cassette transporter b4(-/-) (Abcb4(-/-)) mouse model. METHODS: Female and male Abcb4(-/-) mice from 6 to 13 mo of age were analysed for the degree of cholestasis (liver serum tests), extent of liver fibrosis (hydroxyproline content and Sirius red staining) and tissue-specific activation of signalling pathways such as the IL-1 pathway [quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR)]. For in vivo experiments, murine hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) were isolated via pronase-collagenase perfusion followed by density gradient centrifugation using female mice. Murine HSCs were stimulated with up to 1 ng/mL IL-1ß with or without 2.5 µg/mL Anakinra, an IL-1 receptor antagonist, respectively. The proliferation of murine HSCs was assessed via the BrdU assay. The toxicity of Anakinra was evaluated via the fluorescein diacetate hydrolysis (FDH) assay. In vivo 8-wk-old Abcb4(-/-) mice with an already fully established hepatic phenotype were treated with Anakinra (1 mg/kg body-weight daily intraperitoneally) or vehicle and liver injury and liver fibrosis were evaluated via serum tests, qPCR, hydroxyproline content and Sirius red staining. RESULTS: Liver fibrosis was less pronounced in males than in female Abcb4(-/-) animals as defined by a lower hydroxyproline content (274 ± 64 µg/g vs 436 ± 80 µg/g liver, respectively; n = 13-15; P < 0.001; Mann-Whitney U-test) and lower mRNA expression of the profibrogenic tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP) (1 ± 0.41 vs 0.66 ± 0.33 fold, respectively; n = 13-15; P < 0.05; Mann-Whitney U-test). Reduced liver fibrosis was associated with significantly lower levels of F4/80 mRNA expression (1 ± 0.28 vs 0.71 ± 0.41 fold, respectively; n = 12-15; P < 0.05; Mann-Whitney U-test) and significantly lower IL-1ß mRNA expression levels (1 ± 0.38 vs 0.44 ± 0.26 fold, respectively; n = 13-15; P < 0.001; Mann-Whitney U-test). No gender differences in the serum liver parameters [bilirubin; alanine aminotransferase (ALT); aspartate aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase (AP)] were found. In vitro, the administration of IL-1ß resulted in a significant increase in HSC proliferation [0.94 ± 0.72 arbitrary units (A.U.) in untreated controls, 1.12 ± 0.80 A.U. at an IL-1ß concentration of 0.1 ng/mL and 1.18 ± 0.73 A.U. at an IL-1ß concentration of 1 ng/mL in samples from n = 6 donor animals; P < 0.001; analyses of variance (ANOVA)]. Proliferation was reduced significantly by the addition of 2.5 µg/mL Anakinra (0.81 ± 0.60 A.U. in untreated controls, 0.92 ± 0.68 A.U. at an IL-1ß concentration of 0.1 ng/mL, and 0.91 ± 0.69 A.U. at an IL-1ß concentration of 1 ng/mL; in samples from n = 6 donor animals; P < 0.001; ANOVA) suggesting an anti-proliferative effect of this clinically approved IL-1 receptor antagonist. The FDH assay showed this dose to be non-toxic in HSCs. In vivo, Anakinra had no effect on the hepatic hydroxyproline content, liver serum tests (ALT and AP) and pro-fibrotic (collagen 1α1, collagen 1α2, transforming growth factor-ß, and TIMP-1) and anti-fibrotic [matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP2), MMP9 and MMP13] gene expression after 4 wk of treatment. Furthermore, the hepatic IL-1ß and F4/80 mRNA expression levels were unaffected by Anakinra treatment. CONCLUSION: IL-1ß expression is associated with the degree of liver fibrosis in Abcb4(-/-) mice and promotes HSC proliferation. IL-1 antagonism shows antifibrotic effects in vitro but not in Abcb4(-/-) mice.

RESUMO

Despite the increasing impact of heavy metal pollution in southern Mexico due to urban growth and agricultural and petroleum activities, few studies have focused on the behavior and relationships of these pollutants in the biotic and abiotic components of aquatic environments. Here, we studied the bioaccumulation of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb, V, Zn) in suspended load, sediment, primary producers, mollusks, crustaceans, and fish, in a deltaic lagoon habitat in the Tabasco coast, with the aim to assess the potential ecological risk in that important wetland. Zn showed the highest concentrations, e.g., in suspended load (mean of 159.58 mg kg(-1)) and aquatic consumers (15.43-171.71 mg kg(-1)), particularly Brachyura larvae and ichthyoplankton (112.22-171.71 mg kg(-1)), followed by omnivore Callinectes sp. crabs (113.81-128.07 mg kg(-1)). The highest bioconcentration factors (BCF) of Zn were observed for planktivore and omnivore crustaceans (3.06-3.08). Zn showed a pattern of distribution in the food web through two pathways: the pelagic (where the higher concentrations were found), and the benthic (marsh plants, sediment, mollusk, fish). The other heavy metals had lower occurrences in the food web. Nevertheless, high concentrations of Ni and Cr were found in phytoplankton and sediment (37.62-119.97 mg kg(-1)), and V in epiphytes (68.64 mg kg(-1)). Ni, Cr, and Cd concentrations in sediments surpassed international and national threshold values, and Cd entailed a "considerable" potential risk. These heavy metals are most likely transferred into the food web up to fishes through the benthic pathway. Most of the collected fishes are residents in this type of habitat and have commercial importance. Our results show that the total potential ecological risk in the area can be considered as "moderate". Nevertheless, heavy metal values were similar or surpassed the values from other highly industrialized tropical coastal regions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Nonfluoroscopic mapping systems have demonstrated significant reduction of radiation exposure in radiofrequency (RF) catheter ablation procedures. However, their use as only imaging guide is still limited. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the usefulness of a completely nonfluoroscopic approach to catheter ablation of supraventricular arrhythmias using the Ensite-NavX™ electroanatomical navigation system. METHODS: During 6 years, all consecutive patients referred for RF catheter ablation of regular supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) were admitted for a "zero-fluoroscopy" approach and studied prospectively. The only exclusion criterion was the need to perform a transseptal puncture. RESULTS: A total of 340 procedures were performed on 328 patients (179 men, age 55.7 ± 18.6 years). One hundred fifty-three patients had typical atrial flutter (AFL), 146 had AV nodal reentrant tachycardia (AVNRT), 35 had AV reciprocating tachycardia (AVRT), 4 patients had incisional atrial flutter (IAF), and 2 had focal atrial tachycardia (AT). Procedural success was achieved in 337 of the cases (99.1%). In 322 (94.7%), the procedure was completed without any fluoroscopy use. Mean procedure time was 110.5 ± 51.8 minutes. Mean RF application time was 9.8 ± 12.8 minutes and the number of RF lesions was 16.43 ± 15.8. Only 1 major complication related to vascular access was recorded. During follow-up, there were 12 recurrences (3.5%) (8 patients from the AVNRT group, 4 patients from the AP group). CONCLUSION: RF catheter ablation of SVT with an approach completely guided by the NavX system and without use of fluoroscopy is feasible, safe, and effective.

RESUMO

Common snook Centropomus unidecimalis is an important commercial and fishery species in Southern Mexico, however the high exploitation rates have resulted in a strong reduction of its abundances. Since, the information about its population structure is scarce, the objective of the present research was to determine and compare the age structure in four important fishery sites. For this, age and growth of common snook were determined from specimens collected monthly, from July 2006 to March 2008, from two coastal (Barra Bosque and Barra San Pedro) and two riverine (San Pedro and Tres Brazos) commercial fishery sites in Tabasco, Mexico. Age was determined using sectioned saggitae otoliths and data analyzed by von Bertalanffy and Levenberg-Marquardt among others. Estimated ages ranged from 2 to 17 years. Monthly patterns of marginal increment formation and the percentage of otoliths with opaque rings on the outer edge demonstrated that a single annulus was formed each year. The von Bertalanffy parameters were calculated for males and females using linear adjustment and the non-linear method of Levenberg-Marquardt. The von Bertalanffy growth equations were FLt = 109.21(1-e-0.2(t+0.57)) for Barra Bosque, FLt = 94.56(1-e-027(t+0.485)) for Barra San Pedro, FLt = 97.15(1-e 0.17(t + 1.32)) for San Pedro and FLt = 83.77(1-e-026(t + 0.49)) for Tres Brazos. According to (Hotelling's T2, p < 0.05) test growth was significantly greater for females than for males. Based on the Chen test, von Bertalanffy growth curves were different among the study sites (RSS, p < 0.05). Based on the observed differences in growth parameters among sampling sites (coastal and riverine environments) future research need to be conducted on migration and population genetics, in order to delineate the stock structure of this population and support management programs.

RESUMO

The description of the embryonic and larval development was based on 30 eggs and 30 larvae. Breeders were collected on the Usumacinta River, Tabasco, Mexico and were subjected to manual fertilization in May 2011. Fertilized eggs were spherical, pelagic, translucent and non-adhesive and had an average diameter of 1.07 mm (SD = 0.10), showing a concentric lipid droplet of 0.85 mm (SD = 0.02). The embryo occupied 100 percent of the perivitelline space at hour 14:08 post-fertilization and the egg measured 1.18 mm (SD = 0.14) at this stage. Eclosion started 17 hours post-fertilization when larvae had a length of 2.54 mm (SD = 0.66). Eight preanal and 13 postanal myomeres were observed exhibiting a light brown color. The morphologic characters recorded in this study are similar to the anatomy of embryos and larvae of the Sciaenidae family. The diameter of the eggs and the length of the larvae for A. grunniens are slightly larger than other Sciaenidae species: A. regius, C. striatus, B. chrysora, C. regalis, L. xanthurus, P. cromis, G. lineatus and S. ocellatus. This is the first study of its kind and its results contribute to the knowledge of the species reproductive biology.

BACKGROUND: Biventricular pacing through the coronary sinus (CS) is effective for the treatment of patients with heart failure and left bundle-branch block. However, this approach is not always feasible. Although surgical epicardial lead implantation is an alternative, the technique may be deleterious in some patients. Thus, direct left ventricular (LV) endocardial pacing under local anesthesia may be an option. OBJECTIVE: We describe our technique and analyze the results of direct LV endocardial pacing. METHOD: Fourteen patients with failed resynchronization via CS (April 2006-September 2011) were selected. Using a femoral approach, we performed transseptal puncture and LV mapping, then fixed the active lead where the longest electrical delay was observed; the generator was placed in the anterior thigh. For resynchronization, eight patients with a device previously implanted through the upper veins received a single-chamber generator that was set to the VVT mode to sense the subclavian pacing spike. Six patients received a complete femoral resynchronization system with either a defibrillator or pacemaker. Patients were followed for 6-54 months. RESULTS: The LV lead was successfully implanted in all cases. Two patients experienced excessive bleeding and two died during follow-up. All except one improved at least one New York Heart Association class and experienced improved left ventricle ejection fraction. One patient with recurrent episodes of ventricular fibrillation was asymptomatic. CONCLUSION: Direct LV endocardial pacing is safe and may be a less risky, more efficient alternative than surgical epicardial lead implantation for resynchronization via CS.

RESUMO

AIMS: Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) has been demonstrated to improve the functional class of patients with refractory heart failure if QRS width is >120 ms. Addition of an internal cardioverter defibrillator diminishes the prevalence of mortality of such patients. The technique for CRT requires selective stimulation of the left ventricle (LV), commonly undertaken through the coronary sinus. This procedure is not always feasible. Direct His-bundle pacing (DHBP) might be an alternative for CRT. METHODS AND RESULTS: Patients were selected from a population with refractory heart failure derived for CRT and internal cardioverter defibrillator insertion. Of those, patients in whom LV stimulation via the coronary sinus was not achievable and DHBP obtained left bundle branch block disappearance were included. Direct His-bundle pacing corrected basal conduction disturbances in 13 of the 16 patients (81%) selected. In four patients in whom DHBP was attempted, the electrode was not successfully fixed. In the nine remaining patients, a definitive resynchronization by DHBP was achieved, with consequent improvement in functional class and parameters of LV function as assessed by echocardiography. CONCLUSION: Direct His-bundle pacing might be an alternative treatment for CRT in selected cases.

RESUMO

In Southeastern Mexico, Centropomus undecimalis is an important fish species of sport and commercial fisheries for coastal and riverine communities. Fisheries along rivers and coasts depend on migratory habits of this species, and these movements are probably related to reproduction. In spite of its economic importance, few studies have been conducted focusing on its reproductive biology, and this research aims to analyze these habits. Samples (fork length, somatic and gonads weight, and macroscopic maturity stages) were obtained from organisms collected by fishermen from the largest fishing cooperatives along the coastal and riverine areas of Tabasco, from July 2006 to March 2008. Fish size ranged from 34 to 112 cm fork length, with an average age of 6.42 years for males and 9.12 years for females. In riverine areas, fish sizes ranged from 30 to 85 cm and the average age was 5.5 years for males and 6.6 years for females. Significant differences were recorded between lengths of males and females from the two areas (Kruskal-Wallis, p < 0.05). The male:female ratio was 1:0.68 in the coast, and 1:0.16 in riverine areas. The length-weight relationship did not vary between both sexes among areas (ANCOVA, p > 0.05). A curve for eviscerated weight was calculated for both sexes, for coastal fishes SW = 0.0059 (FL)3.07, and the riverine ones SW = 0.0086 (FL) 2.98, with an isometric growth (b = 3). The period of maximum reproduction was from July to August, with temperatures of 28 to 30 degrees C. A significant correlation between the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and rainfall was recorded for samples of both males and females from coastal areas (r = 0.63, r = 0.70) whereas only one positive correlation was recorded for riverine females (r = 0.57). The size at first maturity (L50) was estimated at 60 cm and 80 cm (FL), corresponding to 5.5 and 8.5 years of age, for males and females, respectively. An important proportion of mature females of eight years and older, suggests that these ages contribute significantly to the reproductive biomass. The results indicate that due to changes in the exploitation period, we recommend to protect populations of the common snook.

AIMS: Right ventricular apical pacing can have deleterious effects and the His bundle has been widely reported to be an alternative site. This paper presents our experience with permanent His-bundle pacing (HBP). METHODS AND RESULTS: Patients referred for pacemaker implants (regardless of block type) were screened to determine if temporary HBP corrected conduction dysfunctions (threshold < or =2.5 V for 1 ms) and provided infra-Hisian 1:1 conduction of at least 120 s/m. Of the 182 patients selected, HBP corrected conduction dysfunctions in 133 (73%) patients, 42 (32%) of whom were rejected for the permanent procedure due to high thresholds. His-bundle lead implantation was attempted in the remaining 91 patients and was successful in 59 (65% of all attempts, 44% of all possible cases). CONCLUSION: In some patients, permanent HBP may be an alternative to right ventricular apical pacing.

RESUMO

Mangrove and seagrass habitats are important components of tropical coastal zones worldwide, and are conspicuous habitats of Centla Wetland Biosphere Reserve (CWBR) in Tabasco, Mexico. In this study, we examine food webs in mangrove- and seagrass-dominated habitats of CWBR using stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen. Our objective was to identify the importance of carbon derived from mangroves and seagrasses to secondary production of aquatic consumers in this poorly studied conservation area. Carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios of basal sources and aquatic consumers indicated that the species-rich food webs of both habitats are dependent on riparian production sources. The abundant Red mangrove Rhizophora mangle appears to be a primary source of carbon for the mangrove creek food web. Even though dense seagrass beds were ubiquitous, most consumers in the lagoon food web appeared to rely on carbon derived from riparian vegetation (e.g. Phragmites australis). The introduced Amazon sailfin catfish Pterygoplichthys pardalis had isotope signatures overlapping with native species (including high-value fisheries species), suggesting potential competition for resources. Future research should examine the role played by terrestrial insects in linking riparian and aquatic food webs, and impacts of the expanding P. pardalis population on ecosystem function and fisheries in CWBR. Our findings can be used as a baseline to reinforce the conservation and management of this important reserve in the face of diverse external and internal human impacts.
