CONTEXT: Sulphur is one of the most abundant elements in the Universe. Surprisingly, sulphuretted molecules are not as abundant as expected in the interstellar medium and the identity of the main sulphur reservoir is still an open question. AIMS: Our goal is to investigate the H2S chemistry in dark clouds, as this stable molecule is a potential sulphur reservoir. METHODS: Using millimeter observations of CS, SO, H2S, and their isotopologues, we determine the physical conditions and H2S abundances along the cores TMC 1-C, TMC 1-CP, and Barnard 1b. The gas-grain model Nautilus is used to model the sulphur chemistry and explore the impact of photo-desorption and chemical desorption on the H2S abundance. RESULTS: Our modeling shows that chemical desorption is the main source of gas-phase H2S in dark cores. The measured H2S abundance can only be fitted if we assume that the chemical desorption rate decreases by more than a factor of 10 when n H > 2 × 104. This change in the desorption rate is consistent with the formation of thick H2O and CO ice mantles on grain surfaces. The observed SO and H2S abundances are in good agreement with our predictions adopting an undepleted value of the sulphur abundance. However, the CS abundance is overestimated by a factor of 5 - 10. Along the three cores, atomic S is predicted to be the main sulphur reservoir. CONCLUSIONS: The gaseous H2S abundance is well reproduced, assuming undepleted sulphur abundance and chemical desorption as the main source of H2S. The behavior of the observed H2S abundance suggests a changing desorption efficiency, which would probe the snowline in these cold cores. Our model, however, highly overestimates the observed gas-phase CS abundance. Given the uncertainty in the sulphur chemistry, we can only conclude that our data are consistent with a cosmic elemental S abundance with an uncertainty of a factor of 10.

The majority of stars are part of gravitationally bound stellar systems, such as binaries. Observations of protobinary systems constrain the conditions that lead to stellar multiplicity and subsequent orbital evolution. We report high-angular resolution observations of the circumbinary disk around [BHB2007] 11, a young binary protostar system. The two protostars are embedded in circumstellar disks that have radii of 2 to 3 astronomical units and probably contain a few Jupiter masses. These systems are surrounded by a complex structure of filaments connecting to the larger circumbinary disk. We also observe accretion and radio jets associated with the protobinary system. The accretion is preferentially onto the lower-mass protostar, consistent with theoretical predictions.

At the low temperatures (approx. 10 K) and high densities (approx. 100 000 H2 molecules per cm-3) of molecular cloud cores and protostellar envelopes, a large amount of molecular species (in particular those containing C and O) freeze-out onto dust grain surfaces. It is in these regions that the deuteration of H3+ becomes very efficient, with a sharp abundance increase of H2D+ and D2H+. The multi-deuterated forms of H3+ participate in an active chemistry: (i) their collision with neutral species produces deuterated molecules such as the commonly observed N2D+, DCO+ and multi-deuterated NH3; (ii) their dissociative electronic recombination increases the D/H atomic ratio by several orders of magnitude above the D cosmic abundance, thus allowing deuteration of molecules (e.g. CH3OH and H2O) on the surface of dust grains. Deuterated molecules are the main diagnostic tools of dense and cold interstellar clouds, where the first steps toward star and protoplanetary disc formation take place. Recent observations of deuterated molecules are reviewed and discussed in view of astrochemical models inclusive of spin-state chemistry. We present a new comparison between models based on complete scrambling (to calculate branching ratio tables for reactions between chemical species that include protons and/or deuterons) and models based on non-scrambling (proton hop) methods, showing that the latter best agree with observations of NH3 deuterated isotopologues and their different nuclear spin symmetry states. GEMS is an IRAM 30m Large Program whose aim is determining the elemental depletions and the ionization fraction in a set of prototypical star-forming regions. This paper presents the first results from the prototypical dark cloud TMC 1. Extensive millimeter observations have been carried out with the IRAM 30m telescope (3 mm and 2 mm) and the 40m Yebes telescope (1.3 cm and 7 mm) to determine the fractional abundances of CO, HCO+, HCN, CS, SO, HCS+, and N2H+ in three cuts which intersect the dense filament at the well-known positions TMC 1-CP, TMC 1-NH3, and TMC 1-C, covering a visual extinction range from A V ~ 3 to ~20 mag. Two phases with differentiated chemistry can be distinguished: i) the translucent envelope with molecular hydrogen densities of 1-5×103 cm-3; and ii) the dense phase, located at A V > 10 mag, with molecular hydrogen densities >104 cm-3. Observations and modeling show that the gas phase abundances of C and O progressively decrease along the C+/C/CO transition zone (A V ~ 3 mag) where C/H ~ 8×10-5 and C/O~0.8-1, until the beginning of the dense phase at A V ~ 10 mag. This is consistent with the grain temperatures being below the CO evaporation temperature in this region. In the case of sulfur, a strong depletion should occur before the translucent phase where we estimate a S/H ~ (0.4 - 2.2) ×10-6, an abundance ~7-40 times lower than the solar value. A second strong depletion must be present during the formation of the thick icy mantles to achieve the values of S/H measured in the dense cold cores (S/H ~8×10-8). Based on our chemical modeling, we constrain the value of ζ H2 to ~ (0.5 - 1.8) ×10-16 s-1 in the translucent cloud.

Collisional excitation of light hydrides is important to fully understand the complex chemical and physical processes of atmospheric and astrophysical environments. Here, we focus on the NH(X3Σ-)-Ar van der Waals system. First, we have calculated a new three-dimensional Potential Energy Surface (PES), which explicitly includes the NH bond vibration. We have carried out the ab initio calculations of the PES employing the open-shell single- and double-excitation couple cluster method with noniterative perturbational treatment of the triple excitations. To achieve a better accuracy, we have first obtained the energies using the augmented correlation-consistent aug-cc-pVXZ (X = T, Q, 5) basis sets and then we have extrapolated the final values to the complete basis set limit. We have also studied the collisional excitation of NH(X3Σ-)-Ar at the close-coupling level, employing our new PES. We calculated collisional excitation cross sections of the fine-structure levels of NH by Ar for energies up to 3000 cm-1. After thermal average of the cross sections, we have then obtained the rate coefficients for temperatures up to 350 K. The propensity rules between the fine-structure levels are in good agreement with those of similar collisional systems, even though they are not as strong and pronounced as for lighter systems, such as NH-He. The final theoretical values are also compared with the few available experimental data.

Among the closed-shell hydrocarbons, the carbenes c- and l-C3H2 are the lightest ones to display a permanent electric dipole moment and be detectable by rotational spectroscopy. The cyclic form, cyclopropenylidene, is ubiquitous in the InterStellar Matter (ISM) of the Milky Way and external galaxies. As such, it serves as a marker to help in characterizing the physical conditions of the ISM. The linear form, propadienylidene, is less abundant. In order to get access to their absolute and relative abundances, it is essential to understand their collisional excitation/quenching schemes. We compute here a precise ab initio potential energy surface for the interaction of c- and l-C3H2 with helium, by means of a CCSD(T)-F12a formalism and a fit onto relevant spherical harmonics functions. We conduct quantum dynamical scattering in order to get precise cross sections using a coupled-channel approach for solving the nuclear motion. We average sections to have rates for rotational quenching from 5 to 150 K. We show that these new rates are vastly different, up to more than an order of magnitude, from the older rates presented in the literature, computed with angular momentum algebra only. We expect large differences in the astrophysical analyses of C3H2, including the chemical history of those ubiquitous carbenes.

In this work we present a study of the vibrational spectra of 4,5,6,8,9-pentachloropyrimido-[1,2-a][1,8]naphthyridin-10-one, C11H2Cl5N3O, a substance belonging to the important pharmacological class of 1,8-naphthyridine derivatives. The Fourier transform infrared and the Fourier transform Raman spectra of the crystal were recorded at room temperature in the regions 400-4000 and 50-4000 cm(-1), respectively. Vibrational wavenumbers were predicted using Density Functional Theory calculations with the B3LYP functional on 6-31G(d,p) and 6-311++G(d,p) basis sets. The descriptions of the normal modes were made after calculating the potential energy distribution. Additionally, potential reaction sites were evaluated through Mulliken population and Frontier Orbital analysis.

Deuterium enhancement of monodeuterated species has been recognized for more than 30 years as a result of chemical fractionation that results from the difference in zero-point energies of deuterated and hydrogenated molecules. The key reaction is the deuteron exchange in the reaction between HD, the reservoir of deuterium in dark interstellar clouds, and the H3+ molecular ion, leading to the production of H2D+ molecule, and the low temperature in dark interstellar clouds favours this production. Furthermore, the presence of multiply deuterated species have incited our group to proceed further and consider the subsequent reaction of H2D+ with HD, leading to D2H+, which can further react with HD to produce D3+. In pre-stellar cores, where CO was found to be depleted, this production should be increased as CO would normally destroy H3+. The first model including D2H+ and D3+ predicted that these molecules should be as abundant as H2D+. The first detection of the D2H+ was made possible by the recent laboratory measurement for the frequency of the fundamental line of para-D2H+. Here, we present observations of H2D+ and D2H+ towards a sample of dark clouds and pre-stellar cores and show how the distribution of ortho-H2D+ (1(1,0)-1(1,1)) can trace the deuterium factory in pre-stellar cores. We also present how future instrumentation will improve our knowledge concerning the deuterium enhancement of H3+.

To investigate whether persistent microalbuminuria is related to altered levels of both lipids and apolipoproteins in Type 2 diabetes mellitus serum total-cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, apolipoprotein A-I, and apolipoprotein B were measured by standard methods in a group of Type 2 diabetic patients affected by persistent microalbuminuria (albumin excretion rate (AER) 20-200 micrograms min-1) as compared with a group of sex- and age-matched non-microalbuminuric patients (AER less than 20 micrograms min-1). The groups were stratified according to a short (less than or equal to 5 years) or a longer (greater than 5 years) duration of diagnosed diabetes. Microalbuminuria was not associated with significant changes of serum total-cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and apolipoproteins in the group of patients with a duration of disease greater than 5 years, while microalbuminuric patients less than or equal to 5 years from diagnosis (n = 11) had serum total-cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol, and apoprotein B higher than non-microalbuminuric control patients (n = 26) (cholesterol 6.2 +/- 0.9 vs 5.1 +/- 1.0 mmol l-1 (p = 0.003); triglycerides 2.1 +/- 0.7 vs 1.7 +/- 1.3 mmol l-1 (p = 0.03); LDL-cholesterol 4.1 +/- 0.8 vs 3.0 +/- 0.7 mmol l-1 (p less than 0.001); apo-B 1.3 +/- 0.3 vs 1.1 +/- 0.3 g l-1 (p = 0.02). In these patients with shorter duration of diabetes many of the serum lipid measures correlated positively with AER.

Metabolism of polyamines (spermidine and spermine) is known to be strictly related to the growth processes of eukaryotic cells. Since cell replication processes appear altered in insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), especially when associated with its microvascular complications, the aim of this study was measuring serum spermidine oxidase activity (SOA), a key enzyme in the metabolic pathway of polyamines, in 47 patients with IDDM as compared with 63 healthy control subjects matched for age and sex. Mean SOA levels +/- SD were significantly lower in IDDM patients (177.4 +/- 57.2 mu kat/l) than in controls (247.6 +/- 68.1 mu kat/l; p less than 0.001), being SOA inversely related with daily insulin dose. SOA was moreover significantly higher (but similar to controls) in the group with increased urinary albumin excretion rate (AER persistently greater than 20 micrograms/min); (n = 17; 213.1 +/- 62.6 mu kat/l) in comparison with normoalbuminuric subjects (n = 30; 156.6 +/- 43.5 mu kat/l; F = 21.78; p = 0.0001). SOA was correlated with AER (r = 0.45; p = 0.001), independently of age, duration of disease, serum creatinine, body weight, blood pressure and metabolic control, as shown by a multiple regression analysis model (p = 0.003). Presence of background retinopathy was not associated with modified levels of SOA, which was conversely higher, although not significantly, in the patients with proliferative retinal lesions. In conclusion serum SOA is deeply altered in IDDM patients, being markedly reduced in the whole group of patients and conversely independently increased up to the mean values of controls in presence of increased AER or advanced retinopathy.

Raised levels of plasma fibronectin (PF), an alpha 2-glycoprotein produced by vascular endothelia, have been previously described in diabetic patients with retinopathy and overt nephropathy. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the presence of microalbuminuria is associated with increased PF concentrations. Twenty Albustix-negative diabetic outpatients with microalbuminuria [median albumin excretion rate (AER): 30.2 micrograms/min; range 12.1-194 micrograms/min] were compared with 58 sex- and age-matched patients without microalbuminuria (median AER 3.1 micrograms/min; range 0.8-12 micrograms/min) and 34 control subjects (median AER 2.8 micrograms/min; range 0.8-12.1 micrograms/min). Mean PF was significantly higher in the group with microalbuminuria (406.7 +/- 85.5 micrograms/ml) than in the group without it (325.3 +/- 76.5 micrograms/ml or in control subjects (334.5 +/- 76 micrograms/ml; P less than .05). PF increase associated with microalbuminuria was independent of the presence of retinopathy. Furthermore, in the whole group of diabetic patients, PF was significantly correlated with AER (r = .33; P = .003). Such correlation also remained significant (P = .0002) after covariance analysis by a stepwise discriminant procedure taking into account age, duration of disease, sex, blood pressure, body weight, therapy, and HbA1. In conclusion, PF increase is associated with microalbuminuria independent of the other considered variables; its role as a possible marker for early diabetic nephropathy remains to be fully clarified.
