BACKGROUND: Q-CEP (Qualificação dos Comitês de Ética em Pesquisa que compõem o Sistema CEP/Conep) is a nationwide project resulting from a partnership between the Brazilian National Research Ethics Commission (Conep), the Ministry of Health and Hospital Moinhos de Vento (HMV). It was developed to consolidate policy for ethical review of research with human beings in all members of the CEP/Conep System, Brazil's national system of institutional review boards. The aim of this study was therefore to report on the experience and results of the Q-CEP project. METHODS: An observational, retrospective study includes data from the Q-CEP, obtained from visits to all the institutional research ethics committees (RECs) in the country. The actions implemented by Q-CEP were part of a two-step process: (i) training visits to each REC; (ii) development of distance learning modules on strategic topics pertaining to research ethics evaluation. The data presented herein cover step one (training visits), defined by Q-CEP as the diagnostic stage of the project. For a country with social and economics inequalities such as Brazil, this is a particularly important stage; an accurate picture of reality is needed to inform planning of quality improvement strategies. RESULTS: In 2019-2021, Q-CEP visited 832 RECs and trained 11,197 people. This sample covered almost all active RECs in the country; only 4 (0.5%) were not evaluated. Of the 94 items evaluated, 62% did not reach the target of at least 80% compliance and around 1/4 (26%) were below 50% compliance. The diagnostic stage of the process revealed inadequacies on the part of the RECs in their ethical reviews. The analysis of informed consent forms showed compliance in only 131 RECs (15.74%). The description of pending issues made by RECs in their reports was compliant in 19.33% (n = 161). Administrative and operational aspects were also considered inadequate by more than half of the RECs. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, Brazilian RECs showed poor compliance in several aspects of their operation, both in ethics evaluation and in other processes, which justifies additional training. The Q-CEP project is part of a quality improvement policy promoted by the Brazilian Ministry of Health. The data obtained in the diagnostic step of the project have contributed to the qualification and consolidation of one of the world's largest research ethics evaluation systems.

Glacial bodies in the Peruvian Andes Mountains store and supply freshwater to hundreds of thousands of people in central Peru. Atmospheric black carbon (BC) is known to accelerate melting of snow and ice, in addition to contributing to air pollution and the health of people. Currently there is limited understanding on the sources and temporal variability of BC in valley and mountain environments in Peru. To address this problem, this study combined surface observations of BC collected during 2022-2023 with WRF model simulations and HYSPLIT trajectories to analyze the dispersion and sources of BC in valley and high elevation environments and the associated local atmospheric circulations. Results show high BC concentrations are associated with the valley-mountain wind system that occurs on both sides of the Huaytapallana mountain range. A pronounced circulation occurs on the western slopes of Huaytapallana when concentrations of BC increase during daylight hours, which transports atmospheric pollutants from cities in the Mantaro River Valley to the Huaytapallana mountain range. Low concentrations of BC are associated with circulations from the east that are channeled by the pronounced ravines of the Andes-Amazon transition. On average, during the season of highest BC concentrations (July-November), the relative contributions of fossil fuels are dominant to biomass burning at the valley observatory and are slightly lower at the Huaytapallana observatory. These results demonstrate the need to promote mitigation actions to reduce emissions of BC and air pollution associated with forest fires and local anthropogenic activity.

30% of people in the United States have diabetes or pre-diabetes. Many of these individuals will develop diabetic neuropathy as a comorbidity, which is often treated with exogenous opioids like morphine, oxycodone, or tramadol. Although these opioids are effective analgesics, growing evidence indicates that they may directly impact the endocrine pancreas function in human and preclinical models. One common feature of these exogenous opioid ligands is their preference for the mu opioid receptor (MOPR), so we aimed to determine if endogenous MOPRs directly regulate pancreatic islet metabolism and hormone secretion. We show that pharmacological antagonism of MOPRs enhances glucagon secretion, but not insulin secretion, from human islets under high glucose conditions. This increased secretion is accompanied by increased cAMP signaling. mRNA expression of MOPRs is enriched in human islet α-cells, but downregulated in T2D islet donors, suggesting a link between metabolism and MOPR expression. Conditional genetic knockout of MOPRs in murine α-cells increases glucagon secretion in high glucose conditions without increasing glucagon content. Consistent with downregulation of MOPRs during metabolic disease, conditional MOPR knockout mice treated with a high fat diet show impaired glucose tolerance, increased glucagon secretion, increased insulin content, and increased islet size. Finally, we show that MOPR-mediated changes in glucagon secretion are driven, in part, by KATP channel activity. Together, these results demonstrate a direct mechanism of action for endogenous opioid regulation of endocrine pancreas.

This study aimed to conduct a spatio-temporal analysis of tegumentary leishmaniasis occurrences in the Amazonas state, Brazil. An ecological study encompassing time series and spatial analysis was performed, exploring the geographic distribution and temporal trends of American Tegumentary Leishmaniasis (ATL) in Amazonas between 2011 and 2022. Secondary data extracted from the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (DATASUS) were utilized for this analysis. The study evaluated the relationship between disease cases and environmental/climatic variables (deforestation, temperature, precipitation, and relative humidity). Over the study period, 19,730 cases of tegumentary leishmaniasis were recorded, averaging an incidence of 41.4/100,000 inhabitants across the 62 municipalities of Amazonas state. Disease intensity varied with seasons. Generally, Amazonas state displayed a declining trend in ATL cases. However, certain municipalities, notably Rio Preto da Eva and Presidente Figueiredo, exhibited high incidence rates, while Canutama, Envira, Eirunepé, and Pauini municipalities demand closer attention due to their demonstrated increasing temporal trend of ATL cases. The analysis indicated a correlation between the number of ATL cases reported and relative humidity as well as precipitation. These findings underscore the significance of tegumentary leishmaniasis as a public health issue in the region and emphasize the necessity for public initiatives aimed at preventing this endemic illness.

Despite the increasing number of mobile-based interventions to quit smoking over the last years, few studies have investigated the efficacy of smoking cessation interventions blended with smartphone Apps. The present pilot study aims to examine the preliminary effectiveness and acceptability of a cognitive-behavioral treatment combined with a smartphone App, compared to the same psychological treatment without the App. The sample comprised 206 treatment-seeking smokers, who were assigned to: 1) an experimental group receiving a cognitive-behavioral intervention combined with the "Non Fumo" App (n = 102), and 2) a control group receiving only the cognitive-behavioral intervention to quit smoking (n = 104). Results concerning the primary outcomes showed no significant differences between conditions in point-prevalence abstinence rates at 12-month follow-up (35.30 % in the experimental group vs. 31.70 % in the control group) and in treatment acceptability. Regarding the secondary outcomes, both groups obtained similar point-prevalence abstinence rates at the end of treatment (61.80 % vs. 65.40 %), at 3-month (42.20 % vs. 45.20 %, respectively) and 6-month follow-ups (37.30 % vs. 37.50 %). No significant differences were found between conditions in prolonged abstinence rates at 6-month (35.3 % vs. 35.6 %) and 12-month follow-ups (30.4 % vs. 26.9 %). Overall, good abstinence rates and treatment acceptability were obtained, although there were no significant differences between conditions. More research is needed to establish clear conclusions about the efficacy of psychological smoking cessation treatments blended with smartphone Apps.

Timely detection of Barrett's esophagus, the pre-malignant condition of esophageal adenocarcinoma, can improve patient survival rates. The Cytosponge-TFF3 test, a non-endoscopic minimally invasive procedure, has been used for diagnosing intestinal metaplasia in Barrett's. However, it depends on pathologist's assessment of two slides stained with H&E and the immunohistochemical biomarker TFF3. This resource-intensive clinical workflow limits large-scale screening in the at-risk population. To improve screening capacity, we propose a deep learning approach for detecting Barrett's from routinely stained H&E slides. The approach solely relies on diagnostic labels, eliminating the need for expensive localized expert annotations. We train and independently validate our approach on two clinical trial datasets, totaling 1866 patients. We achieve 91.4% and 87.3% AUROCs on discovery and external test datasets for the H&E model, comparable to the TFF3 model. Our proposed semi-automated clinical workflow can reduce pathologists' workload to 48% without sacrificing diagnostic performance, enabling pathologists to prioritize high risk cases.

INTRODUCTION: This study assessed the efficacy of the SinHumo App combined with a cognitive-behavioral smoking cessation treatment on 12-month follow-up abstinence, compared with the same smoking cessation treatment and a control App. AIMS AND METHODS: A sample of 288 treatment-seeking people who smoke were randomized: SinHumo App plus smoking cessation treatment (n = 140) and control App plus smoking cessation treatment (n = 148). The primary outcome was 7-day point prevalence abstinence (PPA) at the 12-month follow-up. Secondary outcomes were abstinence rates at the end of the intervention and 3- and 6-month follow-ups, cigarette per day (CPD) reduction over the 12-month follow-up, intervention engagement, and satisfaction. RESULTS: Intention-to-treat analyses showed nonsignificant differences in self-reported 7-day PPA at the 12-month follow-up (37.1 and 42.6%, respectively; OR = 0.80). No significant differences were found in abstinence at the end of the treatment (68.6 vs. 62.8%) nor on 7-day PPA at 3- (35.7 vs. 45.9%) and 6-month (35.0 vs. 41.2%) follow-up. Complete case and multiple imputation analyses yielded similar results for abstinence outcomes. A significant reduction in CPD across the 12-month follow-up in the subsample of participants who smoked was observed, but nonsignificant differences between conditions were found. Higher engagement with the SinHumo App was a significant predictor of 12-month abstinence. Satisfaction with the intervention was high and similar in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: High abstinence rates over the 12-month follow-up and satisfaction were found in both conditions. The inclusion of the SinHumo App did not improve abstinence rates in the intervention. IMPLICATIONS: Scarce research has examined the long-term efficacy of smoking cessation treatments, including Apps, to support the quitting process. The present randomized controlled trial contributes to the existing literature about including information and communication technologies in behavior change interventions. The development of effective smoking cessation apps and information and communication technologies-based interventions is crucial for reducing the prevalence of smoking, as these interventions have the potential to reach a large number of people who smoke and reduce access-related barriers to treatment.

BACKGROUND: In the setting of a known thrombotic event, computed tomography (CT) studies provide reasonable sensitivity for the diagnosis of deep venous thrombosis (DVT). However, the incidence and accuracy of a DVT diagnosis on CT studies not targeted for the detection of DVT are not well described. In addition, the clinical impact of DVTs incidentally identified on CT is unknown. METHODS: In this single-institution retrospective study, we queried all contrasted CT studies of the lower extremities performed over a 10-year period. Regular expressions applied to the radiology reports associated with the CT studies identified studies with positive findings associated with DVT. These selected reports were then manually reviewed to confirm the presence of a DVT. Patient demographics and relevant medical and surgical history were obtained through a chart review. Follow-up information was obtained for 1 year after the incident CT and included treatment course, additional imaging, and adverse events. An incidental DVT was one identified in a patient in whom the DVT was not noted in a prior study and for whom the study indication did not include concern for DVT or pulmonary embolism. RESULTS: Of 16,637 lower extremity contrasted CT studies queried, 37 study reports identified a DVT. However, only 13 patients had a finding of an incidental DVT (10-year incidence of 0.08%). Among these 13 patients, 11 underwent additional imaging, including 9 who had a subsequent venous duplex and 2 who had subsequent CT studies. Among those with a subsequent duplex, DVT was not identified in eight cases, whereas in one case, DVT was confirmed. Among those with subsequent CT studies, DVT was not identified in one case and was confirmed in one case. Of the 13 patients with incidental DVTs, 3 were initiated on anticoagulation based on their initial CT findings alone. Among these, two did not experience any complications from their DVT or anticoagulation regimen. One did experience major bleeding complications, requiring additional procedures. CONCLUSIONS: Incidental DVTs are a rare finding in lower extremity CT studies, noted to occur in only 0.08% of studies. Most patients with incidental DVTs receive additional imaging, with negative findings in 80% of cases. This study identified that 23% of patients were initiated on anticoagulation due to the CT findings, with a 33% rate of significant complications. Currently, a CT venogram is not recommended as a first-line modality for the diagnosis of DVT. However, there is no guidance regarding the need for repeat imaging in patients with incidentally diagnosed lower extremity DVTs identified on CT. Additional study is needed to provide evidence for guideline development.

Sepsis caused by bloodstream infection (BSI) is a major healthcare burden and a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Timely diagnosis is critical to optimize clinical outcome, as mortality rates rise every hour treatment is delayed. Blood culture remains the "gold standard" for diagnosis but is limited by its long turnaround time (1-7 days depending on the organism) and its potential to provide false-negative results due to interference by antimicrobial therapy or the presence of mixed (i.e., polymicrobial) infections. In this paper, we evaluated the performance of resistance and pathogen ID/BSI, a direct-from-specimen molecular assay. To reduce the false-positivity rate common with molecular methods, this assay isolates and detects genomic material only from viable microorganisms in the blood by incorporating a novel precursor step to selectively lyse host and non-viable microbial cells and remove cell-free genomic material prior to lysis and analysis of microbial cells. Here, we demonstrate that the assay is free of interference from host immune cells and common antimicrobial agents at elevated concentrations. We also demonstrate the accuracy of this technology in a prospective cohort pilot study of individuals with known sepsis/BSI status, including samples from both positive and negative individuals. IMPORTANCE: Blood culture remains the "gold standard" for the diagnosis of sepsis/bloodstream infection (BSI) but has many limitations which may lead to a delay in appropriate and accurate treatment in patients. Molecular diagnostic methods have the potential for markedly improving the management of such patients through faster turnaround times and increased accuracy. But molecular diagnostic methods have not been widely adopted for the identification of BSIs. By incorporating a precursor step of selective lysis of host and non-viable microorganisms, our resistance and pathogen ID (RaPID)/BSI molecular assay addresses many limitations of blood culture and other molecular assay. The RaPID/BSI assay has an approximate turnaround time of 4 hours, thereby significantly reducing the time to appropriate and accurate diagnosis of causative microorganisms in such patients. The short turnaround time also allows for close to real-time tracking of pathogenic clearance of microorganisms from the blood of these patients or if a change of antimicrobial regimen is required. Thus, the RaPID/BSI molecular assay helps with optimization of antimicrobial stewardship; prompt and accurate diagnosis of sepsis/BSI could help target timely treatment and reduce mortality and morbidity in such patients.

Spatial omics technologies can reveal the molecular intricacy of the brain. While mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) provides spatial localization of compounds, comprehensive biochemical profiling at a brain-wide scale in three dimensions by MSI with single-cell resolution has not been achieved. We demonstrate complementary brain-wide and single-cell biochemical mapping using MEISTER, an integrative experimental and computational mass spectrometry (MS) framework. Our framework integrates a deep-learning-based reconstruction that accelerates high-mass-resolving MS by 15-fold, multimodal registration creating three-dimensional (3D) molecular distributions and a data integration method fitting cell-specific mass spectra to 3D datasets. We imaged detailed lipid profiles in tissues with millions of pixels and in large single-cell populations acquired from the rat brain. We identified region-specific lipid contents and cell-specific localizations of lipids depending on both cell subpopulations and anatomical origins of the cells. Our workflow establishes a blueprint for future development of multiscale technologies for biochemical characterization of the brain.

The network theory of psychopathology suggests that symptoms in a disorder form a network and that identifying central symptoms within this network might be important for an effective and personalized treatment. However, recent evidence has been inconclusive. We analyzed contemporaneous idiographic networks of depression and anxiety symptoms. Two approaches were compared: a cascade-based attack where symptoms were deactivated in decreasing centrality order, and a normal attack where symptoms were deactivated based on original centrality estimates. Results showed that centrality measures significantly affected the attack's magnitude, particularly the number of components and average path length in both normal and cascade attacks. Degree centrality consistently had the highest impact on the network properties. This study emphasizes the importance of considering centrality measures when identifying treatment targets in psychological networks. Further research is needed to better understand the causal relationships and predictive capabilities of centrality measures in personalized treatments for mental disorders.

Background: In refractory respiratory failure (RF), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a salvage therapy that seeks to reduce lung injury induced by mechanical ventilation. The parameters of optimal mechanical ventilation in children during ECMO are not known. Pulmonary ventilatory management during this therapy may impact mortality. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between ventilatory parameters in children during ECMO therapy and in-hospital mortality. Methods: A systematic search of PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane, and Google Scholar from January 2013 until May 2022 (PROSPERO 450744), including studies in children with ECMO-supported RF assessing mechanical ventilation parameters, was conducted. Risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale; heterogeneity, with absence <25% and high >75%, was assessed using I2. Sensitivity and subgroup analyses using the Mantel-Haenszel random-effects model were performed to explore the impact of methodological quality on effect size. Results: Six studies were included. The median age was 3.4 years (IQR: 3.2-4.2). Survival in the 28-day studies was 69%. Mechanical ventilation parameters associated with higher mortality were a very low tidal volume ventilation (<4 ml/kg; OR: 4.70; 95% CI: 2.91-7.59; p < 0.01; I2: 38%), high plateau pressure (mean Dif: -0.70 95% CI: -0.18, -0.22; p < 0.01), and high driving pressure (mean Dif: -0.96 95% CI: -1.83, -0.09: p = 0.03). The inspired fraction of oxygen (p = 0.09) and end-expiratory pressure (p = 0.69) were not associated with higher mortality. Patients who survived had less multiple organ failure (p < 0.01). Conclusion: The mechanical ventilation variables associated with higher mortality in children with ECMO-supported respiratory failure are high plateau pressures, high driving pressure and very low tidal volume ventilation. No association between mortality and other parameters of the mechanical ventilator, such as the inspired fraction of oxygen or end-expiratory pressure, was found. INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: The outcomes of endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) in the esophagus have not been assessed in our country. Our primary aim was to analyze the effectiveness and safety of the technique. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Analysis of the prospectively maintained national registry of ESD. We included all superficial esophageal lesions removed by ESD in 17 hospitals (20 endoscopists) between January 2016 and December 2021. Subepithelial lesions were excluded. The primary outcome was curative resection. We conducted a survival analysis and used logistic regression analysis to assess predictors of non-curative resection. RESULTS: A total of 102 ESD were performed on 96 patients. The technical success rate was 100% and the percentage of en-bloc resection was 98%. The percentage of R0 and curative resection was 77.5% (n=79; 95%CI: 68%-84%) and 63.7% (n=65; 95%CI: 54%-72%), respectively. The most frequent histology was Barrett-related neoplasia (n=55 [53.9%]). The main reason for non-curative resection was deep submucosal invasion (n=25). The centers with a lower volume of ESD obtained worse results in terms of curative resection. The rate of perforation, delayed bleeding and post-procedural stenosis were 5%, 5% and 15.7%, respectively. No patient died or required surgery due to an adverse effect. After a median follow-up of 14months, 20patients (20.8%) underwent surgery and/or chemoradiotherapy, and 9 patients died (mortality 9.4%). CONCLUSIONS: In Spain, esophageal ESD is curative in approximately two out of three patients, with an acceptable risk of adverse events.

BACKGROUND: Fluoride varnish (FV) is widely recommended for caries prevention in preschool children, despite its anticaries benefits being uncertain and modest. Dentists often report using clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) as a source of scientific information. AIM: To identify and analyze recommendations for clinical practice on the use of FV for caries prevention in preschool children and to assess the methodological quality of the CPG on this topic. DESIGN: Two researchers independently used 12 search strategies and searched the first five pages of Google Search™ and three guideline databases for recommendations freely available to health professionals on the use of FV for caries prevention in preschoolers. Then, they retrieved and recorded recommendations that met the eligibility criteria and extracted the data. A third researcher resolved disagreements. Each included CPG was appraised using the AGREE II instrument. RESULTS: Twenty-nine documents were included. Recommendations varied according to age, patients' caries risk, and application frequency. Of the six CPGs, only one scored above 70% in the AGREE II overall assessment. CONCLUSION: Recommendations on the use of FV lacked scientific evidence, and CPGs were of poor quality. Application of FV is widely recommended despite recent evidence showing an uncertain, modest, and possibly not clinically relevant anticaries benefit. Dentists should be aware that it is necessary to critically appraise CPGs since they may be of poor quality.

RESUMO

Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL) is a rare and aggressive form of peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL). It can present with signs and symptoms that have broad differentials, including fevers, night sweats, and skin rashes. In this case report, we present an interesting case of a young male of Nigerian descent with recently treated malaria who presented with such symptoms and a picture that was complicated, due to an inconclusive excisional biopsy for lymphoma. He was later diagnosed with AITL. Given the patient's recent exposure to malaria, we will discuss the potential role malaria has in the development of AITL.

We measured anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody responses before and after CoronaVac (inactivated) vaccination in a case-control study performed in CoronaVac-immunized individuals participating in a longitudinal prospective study of adults in Manaus (DETECTCoV-19). Antibody responses were measured by standard serological immunoassays. Peak anti-S-RBD and neutralizing RBD-ACE2 blocking antibody responses after two doses of CoronaVac vaccine were similar in vaccine breakthrough cases (n = 9) and matched controls (n = 45). Individuals with hybrid immunity resulting from prior SARS-CoV-2 infection followed by vaccination (n = 22) had elevated levels of anti-N, anti-S-RBD and RBD-ACE2 blocking antibodies after the second vaccine dose compared to infection-naïve individuals (n = 48). Post-vaccination SARS-CoV-2-specific antibody responses rapidly waned in infection-naïve individuals. Antibody responses wane after vaccination, making individuals susceptible to infection by SARS-CoV-2 variants. These findings support the need for booster doses after primary vaccination. Population antibody serosurveys provide critical information toward implementing optimal timing of booster doses.

BACKGROUND: Embolic cerebrovascular events that remain of unknown etiology after a thorough diagnostic evaluation, are known as Embolic Strokes of Undetermined Source (ESUS). Subclinical atrial fibrillation (AF) represents a significant underlying cause of ESUS. Our aims were to examine the overall diagnostic yield of a prolonged cardiac monitoring wearable system (PCMw) after an ESUS to detect AF and factors associated with it, including the time frame from the ESUS event to PCMw initiation. Additionally, to evaluate the frequency of unexpected arrhythmic events (UAE) and their prognostic implications. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 200 ECG recordings (3-leads, 30 days duration) by means of a PCMw in patients with an ESUS to detect AF lasting longer than 30 s, between 2017 and 2021. UAE were defined as arrhythmia events that were not correlated to the main reason of prolonged cardiac monitoring. RESULTS: AF was detected in 21 patients (10.5%). Patients with AF had more left atrial enlargement (OR = 4.22 [1.59-6.85]; p = .01) and atrial arrythmias in the initial 24-h Holter during hospitalization (OR = 5.73 [2.03-16.49]; p = .001). The detection of AF was significatively higher if the PCMw was worn within the first 30 days after the ESUS compared to beyond 30 days (17% vs. 10.3%; p = .002). Fifty three patients (26.5%) had UAE during PCMw. In six of them these findings led to targeted treatment. CONCLUSION: PCMw represents a feasible non-invasive device that could reliably detect subclinical AF episodes after an ESUS. Diagnostic yield was significatively higher when used within the first 30 days after the event, especially in selected patients. UAE were common, but did not impact prognosis.

A 46-year-old man with a personal history of a repaired aortic dissection was admitted because of hemolytic anemia. The transesophageal echocardiogram displayed an accelerated flow and a residual intimal flap in the proximal descending aorta. A total arch replacement was performed, the flap was removed, and his hemolytic anemia was resolved. (Level of Difficulty: Advanced.).

The neotropical Apicotermitinae is a common and widespread clade of mostly soil-feeding soldierless termites. With few exceptions, species of this group were originally assigned to the genus Anoplotermes Müller, 1873. The application of internal worker morphology coupled with genetic sequencing has recently shed light on the true diversity of this subfamily. Herein, Anoplotermessusanae Scheffrahn, Carrijo & Castro, sp. nov. and four new species in four new genera are described: Hirsutitermeskanzakii Scheffrahn, Carrijo & Castro, gen. nov. et sp. nov., Krecekitermesdaironi Scheffrahn, Carrijo & Castro, gen. nov. et sp. nov., Mangolditermescurveileum Scheffrahn, Carrijo & Castro, gen. nov. et sp. nov., and Ourissotermesgiblinorum Scheffrahn, Carrijo & Castro, gen. nov. et sp. nov. Worker descriptions are based mainly on worker gut morphology, including the enteric valve, while imagoes were described based on external characters. A Bayesian phylogenetic tree of New World Apicotermitinae was constructed using the complete mitogenome to infer genera relationships and corroborate the taxonomic decisions. Distribution maps and a dichotomic key to the known Neotropical Apicotermitinae genera are provided.
