RESUMO

At low temperatures, Tb2Ti2O7 enters a spin liquid state, despite expectations of magnetic order and/or a structural distortion. Using neutron scattering, we have discovered that in this spin liquid state an excited crystal field level is coupled to a transverse acoustic phonon, forming a hybrid excitation. Magnetic and phononlike branches with identical dispersion relations can be identified, and the hybridization vanishes in the paramagnetic state. We suggest that Tb2Ti2O7 is aptly named a "magnetoelastic spin liquid" and that the hybridization of the excitations suppresses both magnetic ordering and the structural distortion. The spin liquid phase of Tb2Ti2O7 can now be regarded as a Coulomb phase with propagating bosonic spin excitations.

RESUMO

The Materials Science beamline at the Swiss Light Source has been operational since 2001. In late 2010, the original wiggler source was replaced with a novel insertion device, which allows unprecedented access to high photon energies from an undulator installed in a medium-energy storage ring. In order to best exploit the increased brilliance of this new source, the entire front-end and optics had to be redesigned. In this work, the upgrade of the beamline is described in detail. The tone is didactic, from which it is hoped the reader can adapt the concepts and ideas to his or her needs.

RESUMO

Stoichiometric LnBaFe4O7.0 oxides with Ln = Dy to Lu have been synthesized and protected in order to prevent oxidation at room temperature. The structural study of these compounds, using laboratory and synchrotron X-ray as well as neutron powder diffraction, shows the extraordinary flexibility of the tetrahedral [Fe4] sublattice of these compounds, which exhibit various distortions. At room temperature they all are tetragonal (I4), and at higher temperature (T > 580 K) they exhibit a cubic symmetry (F43m). Moreover, the low-temperature structures of these oxides are dependent on the nature of the Ln(3+) cation. At 110 K, compounds with Ln = Dy and Ho adopt the same monoclinic (P12(1)1) structure as YBaFe4O7.0, whereas YbBaFe4O7.0 possesses a new centered monoclinic cell (I121), and members with Ln = Er and Lu keep the tetragonal (I4) symmetry. Neutron diffraction patterns evidence long-range magnetic ordering only for the most distorted structures (Ln = Dy and Ho), showing that the geometric frustration generated by the tetrahedral [Fe4]∞ sublattice can be lifted only with the most severe distortions. The other oxides (Ln = Er, Yb, and Lu) with weakly distorted [Fe4]∞ sublattices do not exhibit magnetic ordering down to 4 K, demonstrating the importance of magnetic frustration. The behavior of these "114" iron oxides is compared to the cobalt family, showing in both cases a striking underbonding of barium.

The structure of BaMg(1/3)Ta(2/3)O(3) (BMT) has been studied using x-ray scattering. The phonons have been measured and the results are similar to those of other materials with a perovskite structure such as PbMg(1/3)Nb(2/3)O(3) (PMN). The acoustic and lowest energy optic branches were measured but it was not possible to measure the branches of higher energy, possibly this is because they largely consist of oxygen motions. High-resolution inelastic measurements also showed that the diffuse scattering was strictly elastic and not directly related to the phonon spectra. Diffuse scattering was observed in BMT near the (H ± 1/2, K ± 1/2, L ± 1/2) points in the Brillouin zone and these had a characteristic cube shape. This arises from ordering of the B-site ions in BMT. Additional experiments revealed the diffuse scattering in BMT similar in shape to Bragg reflections at wavevectors of the form (H ± 1/3, K ± 1/3, L ± 1/3). Such reflections were also observed by Lufaso (2004 Chem. Mater. 16 2148) from powders and suggest that this structure of BMT consists of four differently oriented domains of a trigonal structure and results from a different ordering of the B-site ions from that responsible for the scattering at the (H ± 1/2, K ± 1/2, L ± 1/2) points. The results lead us to suggest that for BMT single crystals the bulk has the properties of a cubic perovskite, whereas the surface may have quite different structure from that of the bulk. This difference resembles the behaviour of cubic relaxors like PMN and PMN doped by PbTiO(3), where significant surface effects have been reported.

The metal-insulator transition occurring in hollandite K2V8O16 has been studied by means of neutron and x-ray diffraction as well as by thermodynamic and electron-spin resonance measurements. The complete analysis of the crystal structure in the distorted phase allows us to identify dimerization as the main distortion element in insulating K2V8O16. At low-temperature, half of the V chains are dimerized perfectly explaining the suppression of magnetic susceptibility due to the formation of spin singlets. The dimerization is accompanied by the segregation of charges into chains.

RESUMO

The issue of beam-induced damage on diffractive hard X-ray optics is addressed. For this purpose a systematic study on the radiation damage induced by a high-power X-ray beam is carried out in both ambient and inert atmospheres. Diffraction gratings fabricated by three different techniques are considered: electroplated Au gratings both with and without the polymer mold, and Ir-coated Si gratings. The beam-induced damage is monitored by X-ray diffraction and evaluated using scanning electron microscopy.

RESUMO

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) represents the procedure of choice for detection of anatomical lesions in epilepsy. Vascular malformations in central nervous system, such as cavernoma, can cause symptomatic epilepsy. We describe a case of ictal aphasia as manifestation of a partial status epilepticus probably due to a mutual interaction between a recent bleeding cavernoma and a concomitant reduction of antiepileptic treatment in a long-lasting misdiagnosed symptomatic epilepsy. We conclude that MRI is a mandatory diagnostic method to identify structural abnormalities underlying epilepsy in all patients affected by recurrent focal seizures independent of the duration of epilepsy.

RESUMO

The structure of a single layer of graphene on Ru(0001) has been studied using surface x-ray diffraction. A surprising superstructure containing 1250 carbon atoms has been determined, whereby 25 x 25 graphene unit cells lie on 23 x 23 unit cells of Ru. Each supercell contains 2 x 2 crystallographically inequivalent subcells caused by corrugation. Strong intensity oscillations in the superstructure rods demonstrate that the Ru substrate is also significantly corrugated down to several monolayers and that the bonding between graphene and Ru is strong and cannot be caused by van der Waals bonds. Charge transfer from the Ru substrate to the graphene expands and weakens the C-C bonds, which helps accommodate the in-plane tensile stress. The elucidation of this superstructure provides important information in the potential application of graphene as a template for nanocluster arrays.

We studied the compressibility of silver (10 nm) and gold (30 nm) nanoparticles, n-Ag and n-Au, suspended in a methanol-ethanol mixture by x-ray diffraction (XRD) with synchrotron radiation at pressures up to 30 GPa. Unexpectedly for that size, the nanoparticles show a significantly higher stiffness than the corresponding bulk materials. The bulk modulus of n-Au, K(0)=290(8) GPa, shows an increase of ca. 60% and is in the order of W or Ir. The structural characterization of both kinds of nanoparticles by XRD and high-resolution electron microscopy identified polysynthetic domain twinning and lamellar defects as the main origin for the strong decrease in compressibility.

Few data are available on cognitive and psychiatric effects of topiramate (TPM) monotherapy in migraine. Twenty patients affected by migraine were treated with TPM monotherapy. At the same time, twenty control subjects were selected. A comprehensive neuropsychological and behavioural battery of tests were performed at baseline (T0), at titration (T1) and in maintenance period (T2). Topiramate serum levels were also investigated at T1 and T2. On comparison with the control group, no cognitive and psychiatric differences were detected at baseline. A significant reduction of word fluency score (P < 0.05) was evident after TPM treatment, both at T1 and T2. No patient developed psychiatric adverse events. TPM induced an impairment of verbal fluency and no psychiatric adverse events, demonstrating selective negative cognitive profile in migraine therapy. Slow titration, low doses, lack of previous psychiatric disorders and/or familial history may explain our data.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) can modify spasticity. METHODS: We used high-frequency (5 Hz) and low-frequency (1 Hz) rTMS protocols in 19 remitting patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis and lower limb spasticity. RESULTS: A single session of 1 Hz rTMS over the leg primary motor cortex increased H/M amplitude ratio of the soleus H reflex, a reliable neurophysiologic measure of stretch reflex. Five hertz rTMS decreased H/M amplitude ratio of the soleus H reflex and increased corticospinal excitability. Single sessions did not induce any effect on spasticity. A significant improvement of lower limb spasticity was observed when rTMS applications were repeated during a 2-week period. Clinical improvement was long-lasting (at least 7 days after the end of treatment) when the patients underwent 5 Hz rTMS treatment during a 2-week protocol. No effect was obtained after a 2-week sham stimulation. CONCLUSIONS: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation may improve spasticity in multiple sclerosis.

Few studies focused on the effects of cabergoline on sleep-wake cycle in PD. Twelve patients affected by PD treated with levodopa as monotherapy underwent two 24-hour ambulatory polysomnographic (A-PSG) sessions twice: in baseline condition (levodopa as monotherapy) and after addition of cabergoline. In each condition, a subjective evaluation of sleep quality and daytime sleepiness was obtained by means of Parkinson's disease Sleep Scale (PDSS) and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale. The statistical analysis of sleep parameters revealed a significant increase of sleep efficiency and slow wave sleep under cabergoline. The PDSS total score showed a significant improvement of overall sleep quality after cabergoline. No significant changes in daytime sleepiness were observed. No patient referred and/or showed sleep attacks before and after addition of cabergoline. We hypothesize that the long-lasting effect of cabergoline may improve the objective quality of nocturnal sleep in PD patients complaining nocturnal motor disability without inducing daytime sleepiness.

We report a study of the geometrically frustrated magnetic material Tb2Sn2O7 by the positive muon-spin relaxation technique. No signature of a static magnetically ordered state is detected while neutron magnetic reflections are observed in agreement with a published report. This is explained by the dynamical nature of the ground state of Tb2Sn2O7: the Tb3+ magnetic moment characteristic fluctuation time is approximately 10(-10) s. The strong effect of the magnetic field on the muon-spin-lattice relaxation rate at low fields indicates a large field-induced increase of the magnetic density of states of the collective excitations at low energy.

A rather detailed report is presented on the present status of the algebraic approach to the phase problem in the case of an ideal crystal in order to make clear that some points must still be proven for it to apply to neutron scattering. To make this extension, the most important results that were previously obtained in the case of X-ray scattering are derived again by a different procedure. By so doing, the three-dimensional case is treated explicitly, the polynomial equations in a single variable whose roots determine the positions of the scattering centres are explicitly reported and the procedure is shown to generalize to neutron scattering, overcoming the difficulty related to the non-positivity of the scattering density. In this way, it is fully proven that the atomicity assumption removes the phase ambiguity in the sense that the full diffraction pattern of an ideal crystal can uniquely be reconstructed from a suitable finite portion of it in both X-ray and neutron scattering. The procedures able to isolate these portions that contain the pattern's full information are also given.

It is generally assumed that decagonal quasicrystals show periodically arranged atomic layers only on net planes perpendicular to the tenfold axis and quasiperiodically arranged ones parallel to it. However, there also do exist only slightly puckered atomic layers that are periodically arranged and inclined to the tenfold axis. They coincide with the net planes of the periodic average structures of the decagonal phase and are related to the strongest Bragg reflections. Since they link quasiperiodic and periodic directions, inclined net planes may play a crucial role for growth and stabilization of decagonal quasicrystals. In fact, it is shown how ideal quasiperiodic long-range order and inflation symmetry allow for the existence of inclined net planes with small corrugation and reinforce the relation with the periodic average structures.
