This study examines how current collector support chemistry (sodiophilic intermetallic Na2Te vs. sodiophobic baseline Cu) and electrodeposition rate affect microstructure of sodium metal and its solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Capacity and current (6 mAh cm-2, 0.5-3 mA cm-2) representative of commercially relevant mass loading in anode-free sodium metal battery (AF-SMBs) are analyzed. Synchrotron X-ray nanotomography and grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) are combined with cryogenic focused ion beam (cryo-FIB) microscopy. Highlighted are major differences in film morphology, internal porosity, and crystallographic preferred orientation e.g. (110) vs. (100) and (211) with support and deposition rate. Within the SEI, sodium fluoride (NaF) is more prevalent with Te-Cu versus sodium hydride (NaH) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) with baseline Cu. Due to competitive grain growth the preferred orientation of sodium crystallites depends on film thickness. Mesoscale modelling delineates the role of SEI (ionic conductivity, morphology) on electrodeposit growth and onset of electrochemical instability.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Medicine image classification are important methods of traditional medical image analysis, but the trainable data in medical image classification is highly imbalanced and the accuracy of medical image classification models is low. In view of the above two common problems in medical image classification. This study aims to: (i) effectively solve the problem of poor training effect caused by the imbalance of class imbalanced data sets. (ii) propose a network framework suitable for improving medical image classification results, which needs to be superior to existing methods. METHODS: In this paper, we put in the diffusion model multi-scale feature fusion network (DMSFF), which mainly uses the diffusion generation model to overcome imbalanced classes (DMOIC) on highly imbalanced medical image datasets. At the same time, it is processed according to the cropped image augmentation strategy through cropping (IASTC). Based on this, we use the new dataset to design a multi-scale feature fusion network (MSFF) that can fully utilize multiple hierarchical features. The DMSFF network can effectively solve the problems of small and imbalanced samples and low accuracy in medical image classification. RESULTS: We evaluated the performance of the DMSFF network on highly imbalanced medical image classification datasets APTOS2019 and ISIC2018. Compared with other classification models, our proposed DMSFF network achieved significant improvements in classification accuracy and F1 score on two datasets, reaching 0.872, 0.731, and 0.906, 0.836, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Our newly proposed DMSFF architecture outperforms existing methods on two datasets, and verifies the effectiveness of generative model inverse balance for imbalance class datasets and feature enhancement by multi-scale feature fusion. Further, the method can be applied to other class imbalanced data sets where the results will be improved.

The fruits of Alpinia oxyphylla (Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus, AOF) are one of the "Four Famous South Medicines" in China. In this study, beta-site amyloid protein precursor cleaving enzyme 1 (BACE1) was applied to explore the active components in AOF responsible for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM)-related cognitive disorder. As a result, 24 compounds including three unreported ones (1, 3, 4) were isolated from AOF. Compound 1 is an unusual carbon­carbon linked diarylheptanoid dimer, and compound 4 is the first case of 3,4-seco-eudesmane sesquiterpenoid with a 5/6-bicyclic skeleton. Four diarylheptanoids (3, 5-7), one flavonoid (9) and two sesquiterpenoids (14 and 20) showed BACE1 inhibitory activity, of which the most active 6 was revealed to be a non-competitive and anti-competitive mixed inhibitor. Docking simulation suggested that OH-4' of 6 played important roles in maintaining activity by forming hydrogen bonds with Ser36 and Ile126 residues. Compounds 3, 5, 9 and 20 displayed neuroprotective effects against amyloid ß (Aß)-induced damage in BV2 cells. Mechanism study revealed that compounds 5 and 20 downregulated the expression of BACE1 and upregulated the expression of Lamp2 to exert effects. Thus, the characteristic diarylheptanoids and sesquiterpenoids in AOF had the efficacy to alleviate T2DM-related cognitive disorder by inhibiting BACE1 activity and reversing Aß-induced neuronal damage.

Ceramic aerogels are promising materials for thermal insulation and protection under harsh environments. Yet current synthesis methods fail to provide an energy-, time-, and cost-effective route for high-throughput production and large-scale applications, especially for non-oxide ceramic aerogels. Here we reported a way to synthesize SiC aerogels within seconds and over liter scale, with a demonstrated throughput of ~16 L min-1 in a typical lab experiment. The key lies in renovated combustion synthesis and a fast expansion from powder reactants to aerogel products over 1000% in volume. The synthesis process is self-sustainable and requires minimal energy input. The product is very cheap, with an estimated price of ~$0.7 L-1 (~$7 kg-1). The obtained SiC aerogels have excellent thermo-mechanical properties, including low thermal conductivity, high elasticity, and damage tolerance. Our invention not only offers a practical pathway for large-scale applications of ceramic aerogels, but also calls for rethinking of combustion synthesis in one-step conversion from raw chemicals to bulk products ready for practical applications.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) secretagogues are fascinating pharmacotherapies to overcome the defects of GLP-1 analogs and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors in treating diabetes and obesity. To discover new GLP-1 secretagogues from natural sources, alpigalangols A-Q (1-17), 17 new labdane diterpenoids including four unusual nor-labdane and N-containing ones, were isolated from the fruits of Alpinia galanga. Most of the isolates showed GLP-1 promotive effects in NCl-H716 cells, of which compounds 3, 4, 12, and 14-17 were revealed with high promoting rates of 246.0%-413.8% at 50 µM. A mechanistic study manifested that the most effective compound 12 upregulated the mRNA expression of Gcg and Pcsk1, and the protein phosphorylation of PKA, CREB, and GSK3ß, but was inactive on GPBAR and GPR119 receptors. Network pharmacology analysis indicated that the PI3K-Akt pathway was involved in the GLP-1 stimulation of 12, which was highly associated with AKT1, CASP3, PPARG, and ICAM1 proteins. This study suggests that A. galanga is rich in diverse labdane diterpenoids with GLP-1 promoting effects, representing a new type of antidiabetic candidates from natural sources.

As the most promising hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts, platinum (Pt)-based catalysts still struggle with sluggish kinetics and expensive costs in alkaline media. Herein, we accelerate the alkaline hydrogen evolution kinetics by optimizing the local environment of Pt species and metal oxide heterointerfaces. The well-dispersed PtRu bimetallic clusters with adjacent MO2-x (M = Sn and Ce) on carbon nanotubes (PtRu/CNT@MO2-x) are demonstrated to be a potential electrocatalyst for alkaline HER, exhibiting an overpotential of only 75 mV at 100 mA cm-2 in 1 M KOH. The excellent mass activity of 12.3 mA µg-1Pt+Ru and specific activity of 32.0 mA cm-2ECSA at an overpotential of 70 mV are 56 and 64 times higher than those of commercial Pt/C. Experimental and theoretical investigations reveal that the heterointerfaces between Pt clusters and MO2-x can simultaneously promote H2O adsorption and activation, while the modification with Ru further optimizes H adsorption and H2O dissociation energy barriers. Then, the matching kinetics between the accelerated elementary steps achieved superb hydrogen generation in alkaline media. This work provides new insight into catalytic local environment design to simultaneously optimize the elementary steps for obtaining ideal alkaline HER performance.

The intensifying global opioid crisis, majorly attributed to fentanyl (FT) and its analogs, has necessitated the development of rapid and ultrasensitive remote/on-site FT sensing modalities. However, current approaches for tracking FT exposure through wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) are unadaptable, time-consuming, and require trained professionals. Toward developing an extended in situ wastewater opioid monitoring system, we have developed a screen-printed electrochemical FT sensor and integrated it with a customized submersible remote sensing probe. The sensor composition and design have been optimized to address the challenges for extended in situ FT monitoring. Specifically, ZIF-8 metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived mesoporous carbon (MPC) nanoparticles (NPs) are incorporated in the screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) transducer to improve FT accumulation and its electrocatalytic oxidation. A rapid (10 s) and sensitive square wave voltammetric (SWV) FT detection down to 9.9 µgL-1 is thus achieved in aqueous buffer solution. A protective mixed-matrix membrane (MMM) has been optimized as the anti-fouling sensor coating to mitigate electrode passivation by FT oxidation products and enable long-term, intermittent FT monitoring. The unique MMM, comprising an insulating polyvinyl chloride (PVC) matrix and carboxyl-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNT-COOH) as semiconductive fillers, yielded highly stable FT sensor operation (> 95% normalized response) up to 10 h in domestic wastewater, and up to 4 h in untreated river water. This sensing platform enables wireless data acquisition on a smartphone via Bluetooth. Such effective remote operation of submersible opioid sensing probes could enable stricter surveillance of community water systems toward timely alerts, countermeasures, and legal enforcement.

Objective: This study aimed to determine whether patients with disorders of consciousness (DoC) could experience neural entrainment to individualized music, which explored the cross-modal influences of music on patients with DoC through phase-amplitude coupling (PAC). Furthermore, the study assessed the efficacy of individualized music or preferred music (PM) versus relaxing music (RM) in impacting patient outcomes, and examined the role of cross-modal influences in determining these outcomes. Methods: Thirty-two patients with DoC [17 with vegetative state/unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (VS/UWS) and 15 with minimally conscious state (MCS)], alongside 16 healthy controls (HCs), were recruited for this study. Neural activities in the frontal-parietal network were recorded using scalp electroencephalography (EEG) during baseline (BL), RM and PM. Cerebral-acoustic coherence (CACoh) was explored to investigate participants' abilitiy to track music, meanwhile, the phase-amplitude coupling (PAC) was utilized to evaluate the cross-modal influences of music. Three months post-intervention, the outcomes of patients with DoC were followed up using the Coma Recovery Scale-Revised (CRS-R). Results: HCs and patients with MCS showed higher CACoh compared to VS/UWS patients within musical pulse frequency (p = 0.016, p = 0.045; p < 0.001, p = 0.048, for RM and PM, respectively, following Bonferroni correction). Only theta-gamma PAC demonstrated a significant interaction effect between groups and music conditions (F (2,44) = 2.685, p = 0.036). For HCs, the theta-gamma PAC in the frontal-parietal network was stronger in the PM condition compared to the RM (p = 0.016) and BL condition (p < 0.001). For patients with MCS, the theta-gamma PAC was stronger in the PM than in the BL (p = 0.040), while no difference was observed among the three music conditions in patients with VS/UWS. Additionally, we found that MCS patients who showed improved outcomes after 3 months exhibited evident neural responses to preferred music (p = 0.019). Furthermore, the ratio of theta-gamma coupling changes in PM relative to BL could predict clinical outcomes in MCS patients (r = 0.992, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Individualized music may serve as a potential therapeutic method for patients with DoC through cross-modal influences, which rely on enhanced theta-gamma PAC within the consciousness-related network.

We propose helical topological superconductivity away from the Fermi surface in three-dimensional time-reversal-symmetric odd-parity multiband superconductors. In these systems, pairing between electrons originating from different bands is responsible for the corresponding topological phase transition. Consequently, a pair of helical topological Dirac surface states emerges at finite excitation energies. These helical Dirac surface states are tunable in energy by chemical potential and strength of band splitting. They are protected by time-reversal symmetry combined with crystalline twofold rotation symmetry. We suggest concrete materials in which this phenomenon could be observed.

The growing demand for natural rubber products has driven the expansion of rubber plantations in recent decades. While much attention has been given to studying the long-term effects of rubber and rubber-based agroforestry systems on surface soil properties, there has been a tendency to overlook changes in soil properties in deeper layers. Our study addresses this gap by examining alterations in nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and metal ion levels in deep soil layers resulting from the prolonged cultivation of rubber and rubber-based agroforestry systems. We found notable shifts in soil NH4+ and NO3- concentrations within the 0-30 cm soil layer across different-aged rubber and rubber-based agroforestry systems. Particularly in mature systems, NO3- and available P levels were close to zero below 30 cm soil depth. Introducing Flemingia macrophylla into young rubber plantations increased soil NH4+ and NO3- in the 0-90 cm soil layer and available P in the 0-10 cm soil layer. Over the long term, cultivation of rubber plantations increased the depletion of total P in the 0-50 cm soil layer, available iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) in the 30-90 cm soil layer, available copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) in the 0-90 cm soil layer, accompanied by a decrease in soil pH and increase in exchangeable aluminum (Al) in the 0-90 cm soil layer. Notably, soil exchangeable Al levels exceeding 2.0 cmol kg-1 appeared to induce aluminum toxicity. Furthermore, soil pH below 5.2 triggered a sharp release of exchangeable Al within the 0-90 cm soil layer of rubber plantations, with soil available P nearing zero when exchangeable Al levels assed 7.3 cmol kg-1. Our findings underscore the profound impact of long-term rubber plantation cultivation on surface and deep soil properties. Addressing soil degradation in these deep soil layers poses significant challenges for future soil restoration efforts.

This communication first achieved piezo-photocatalytic reduction of nitrates to N2 through designing an Ag2O/BaTiO3@TiO2 core-shell catalyst. The built-in electric field induced by piezoelectric polarization suppresses photoexcited carrier recombination, and simultaneously causes energy band tilting, leading to the generation of electrons with higher reducibility to directly trigger the NO3- reduction to ˙NO32-, even without hole scavengers.

The impacts of the composition and properties of tar products on their utilization are of great importance, while the consequences of varying tar separation conditions on distillation fractions remain underexplored. Solid impurities in special tar products (e.g., subsurface in situ pyrolysis-derived tar-like substances) can contribute to the separation as well. In the present study, low-temperature coal tar (LTCT) was used as an analogue to pyrolysis product, mixed with semi-coke and coal dust, representing pyrolytic byproducts and nonpyrolytic substances, respectively. The LTCT mixtures were tested with vacuum distillation at various pressures and temperatures. The results revealed the role of pressure in fraction distribution across temperatures, with higher pressure concentrating fractions at lower temperatures. The impact of solid impurities on distillation primarily stemmed from adsorption. Minimal concentrations of solid impurities carried coal dust/semi-coke into the distillation, but higher levels retained them in the residue. The adsorption of coal dust was quite high at lower temperatures and waned as temperature increased, unlike semi-coke, which had consistent adsorption throughout the distillation. The present study can advance the understanding of vacuum distillation for tar products in the presence of solid impurities, offering a framework for the effective distillation/utilization of coal tar. By probing separation conditions, tar properties, and solid impurity effects, the present research will refine strategies for optimizing coal tar use, crucial for enhancing energy security and sustainable progress in China.

The rate performance, power density, and energy efficiency of electrochemical devices are often limited by ionic conductivities in electrolyte and electrode materials. Framework Prussian blue analogs and dense niobium oxides have been identified as high-rate electrodes for sodium- and lithium-ion batteries, respectively, yet the origin of the extremely high solid-state Na+/Li+ transport is not fully understood. Of critical importance is the fact that their ultra-low activation energy and anomalous pre-exponent factor cannot be satisfactorily rationalized from conventional theory of solid-state diffusion in the crystal lattice. Here, assisted by density-functional-theory calculations, we argued that the true origin is a unique surface-like diffusion mechanism of the intercalation ions. In a surface-like migration event, a mobile ion moves along the channel wall via a low coordination number and low migration barrier experiencing minimal steric hindrance. It is similar to surface diffusion in the conventional picture and contrasts with lattice diffusion from one interstitial/vacancy site to another one with high coordination number, crowded saddle-point geometry and high migration barrier. We found that the shifting from solid-state lattice diffusion to surface-like diffusion is determined by the size difference between the mobile ion and the diffusion channel, and a lowest migration energy barrier can be reached by mediating the channel size. The analogy to gas diffusion in molecular sieves shall be discussed. Additionally, the effects of defects and crystal water in Prussian blue analogs were also discussed for better understanding their rate performances in experimental scenarios.

BACKGROUND: The seizure prediction algorithms have demonstrated their potential in mitigating epilepsy risks by detecting the pre-ictal state using ongoing electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. However, most of them require high-density EEG, which is burdensome to the patients for daily monitoring. Moreover, prevailing seizure models require extensive training with significant labeled data which is very time-consuming and demanding for the epileptologists. METHOD: To address these challenges, here we propose an adaptive channel selection strategy and a semi-supervised deep learning model respectively to reduce the number of EEG channels and to limit the amount of labeled data required for accurate seizure prediction. Our channel selection module is centered on features from EEG power spectra parameterization that precisely characterize the epileptic activities to identify the seizure-associated channels for each patient. The semi-supervised model integrates generative adversarial networks and bidirectional long short-term memory networks to enhance seizure prediction. RESULTS: Our approach is evaluated on the CHB-MIT and Siena epilepsy datasets. With utilizing only 4 channels, the method demonstrates outstanding performance with an AUC of 93.15% on the CHB-MIT dataset and an AUC of 88.98% on the Siena dataset. Experimental results also demonstrate that our selection approach reduces the model parameters and training time. CONCLUSIONS: Adaptive channel selection coupled with semi-supervised learning can offer the possible bases for a light weight and computationally efficient seizure prediction system, making the daily monitoring practical to improve patients' quality of life.

Sonophotodynamic antimicrobial therapy (SPDAT) is recognized as a highly efficient biomedical treatment option, known for its versatility and remarkable healing outcomes. Nevertheless, there is a scarcity of sonophotosensitizers that demonstrate both low cytotoxicity and exceptional antibacterial effectiveness in clinical applications. In this paper, a novel ZnO nanowires (NWs)@TiO2-xNy core-sheath composite was developed, which integrates the piezoelectric effect and heterojunction to build dual built-in electric fields. Remarkably, it showed superb antibacterial effectiveness (achieving 95% within 60 min against S. aureus and ∼100% within 40 min against E. coli, respectively) when exposed to visible light and ultrasound. Due to the continuous interference caused by light and ultrasound, the material's electrostatic equilibrium gets disrupted. The modification in electrical properties facilitates the composite's ability to attract bacterial cells through electrostatic forces. Moreover, Zn-O-Ti and Zn-N-Ti bonds formed at the interface of ZnO NWs@TiO2-xNy, further enhancing the dual internal electric fields to accelerate the excited carrier separation to generate more reactive oxygen species (ROS), and thereby boosting the antimicrobial performance. In addition, the TiO2 layer limited Zn2+ dissolution into solution, leading to good biocompatibility and low cytotoxicity. Lastly, we suggest a mechanistic model to offer practical direction for the future development of antibacterial agents that are both low in toxicity and high in efficacy. In comparison to the traditional photodynamic therapy systems, ZnO NWs@TiO2-xNy composites exhibit super piezo-photocatalytic antibacterial activity with low toxicity, which shows great potential for clinical application as an antibacterial nanomaterial.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of dietary protein levels on growth performance, serum indices, body amino acid composition, and intestinal gene expression in juvenile hybrid sturgeon (Acipenser baerii × A. schrenckii). Hybrid sturgeons (initial weight 29.21 ± 2.04 g) were fed isolipidic diets containing 30%, 33%, 36%, 39%, 42% or 45% crude protein for 12 weeks (n = 18 tanks, 30 fish/tank). Results showed significant differences between treatments, where weight gain and protein efficiency ratio peaked optimally between 35.9% and 38.3% dietary protein. Serum parameters such as glucose, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, superoxide dismutase, and lipid peroxidation levels varied significantly with changes in dietary protein levels. Specifically, the highest enzymatic activities and growth parameters were observed in groups fed with 33% to 39% protein, enhancing whole-body concentrations of lysine, leucine, phenylalanine, proline, and glutamic acid. Immune parameters such as immunoglobulin M and lysozyme activity also showed peak levels at higher protein concentrations, particularly notable at 42% for lysozyme and 36% for both component 3 and immunoglobulin M. Gene expression related to immune and growth pathways, including MyD88, TLR1, IL-8, IL-6, NF-κB, and IL1ß, was significantly upregulated at protein levels of 33% to 36%, with a noted peak in expression at 39% for TLR1, IL-10, and TOR signaling genes, before diminishing at higher protein levels. Overall, the dietary protein requirement for juvenile hybrid sturgeon ranges from 35.9% to 38.3% crude protein.

Excessive bone marrow adipocytes (BMAds) accumulation often occurs under diverse pathophysiological conditions associated with bone deterioration. Estrogen-related receptor α (ESRRA) is a key regulator responding to metabolic stress. Here, we show that adipocyte-specific ESRRA deficiency preserves osteogenesis and vascular formation in adipocyte-rich bone marrow upon estrogen deficiency or obesity. Mechanistically, adipocyte ESRRA interferes with E2/ESR1 signaling resulting in transcriptional repression of secreted phosphoprotein 1 (Spp1); yet positively modulates leptin expression by binding to its promoter. ESRRA abrogation results in enhanced SPP1 and decreased leptin secretion from both visceral adipocytes and BMAds, concertedly dictating bone marrow stromal stem cell fate commitment and restoring type H vessel formation, constituting a feed-forward loop for bone formation. Pharmacological inhibition of ESRRA protects obese mice against bone loss and high marrow adiposity. Thus, our findings highlight a therapeutic approach via targeting adipocyte ESRRA to preserve bone formation especially in detrimental adipocyte-rich bone milieu.

We aimed to investigate the electrocardiogram (ECG) features in persons with chronic disorders of consciousness (DOC, ≥ 29 days since injury, DSI) resulted from the most severe brain damages. The ECG data from 30 patients with chronic DOC and 18 healthy controls (HCs) were recorded during resting wakefulness state for about five minutes. The patients were classified into vegetative state (VS) and minimally conscious state (MCS). Eight ECG metrics were extracted for comparisons between the subject subgroups, and regression analysis of the metrics were conducted on the DSI (29-593 days). The DOC patients exhibit a significantly higher heart rate (HR, p = 0.009) and lower values for SDNN (p = 0.001), CVRR (p = 0.009), and T-wave amplitude (p < 0.001) compared to the HCs. However, there're no significant differences in QRS, QT, QTc, or ST amplitude between the two groups (p > 0.05). Three ECG metrics of the DOC patients-HR, SDNN, and CVRR-are significantly correlated with the DSI. The ECG abnormalities persist in chronic DOC patients. The abnormalities are mainly manifested in the rhythm features HR, SDNN and CVRR, but not the waveform features such as QRS width, QT, QTc, ST and T-wave amplitudes.
