RESUMO

In this work, we report an n-type metal-oxide-semiconductor (nMOS) inverter using chemical vapor deposition (CVD)-grown monolayer WS2 field-effect transistors (FETs). Our large-area CVD-grown monolayer WS2 FETs exhibit outstanding electrical properties including a high on/off ratio, small subthreshold swing, and excellent drain-induced barrier lowering. These are achieved by n-type doping using AlOx/Al2O3 and a double-gate structure employing high-k dielectric HfO2. Due to the superior subthreshold characteristics, monolayer WS2 FETs show high transconductance and high output resistance in the subthreshold regime, resulting in significantly higher intrinsic gain compared to conventional Si MOSFETs. Therefore, we successfully realize subthreshold operating monolayer WS2 nMOS inverters with extremely high gains of 564 and 2056 at supply voltage (VDD) of 1 and 2 V, respectively, and low power consumption of ∼2.3 pW·µm-1 at VDD = 1 V. In addition, the monolayer WS2 nMOS inverter is further expanded to the demonstration of logic circuits such as AND, OR, NAND, NOR logic gates, and SRAM. These findings suggest the potential of monolayer WS2 for high-gain and low-power logic circuits and validate the practical application in large areas.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the impact of national health insurance coverage on newborn hearing screening (NHS) outcomes by analyzing hearing questionnaires from the National Infant Health Check-up Program (NIHCP) in South Korea. METHODS: This study evaluated the performance and referral rates of NHS using nationwide data from 814,875 infants enrolled in the 4-month NIHCP from January 2017 to December 2019. This period encompasses the periods before and after the National Health Insurance in South Korea began covering NHS expenses in October 2018. The study also investigated household income levels to determine their relationship with participation in the NIHCP and NHS outcomes. RESULTS: The performance of NIHCP increased year-on-year, with NHS performance rates increasing from 88.5 % in 2017 to 91.5 % in 2019. Analysis by household income level revealed that the medical benefit recipients' group had the lowest NHS performance rate of 81.9 % in 2019, whereas that of the higher income level group exceeded 90 %. The NHS referral rate remained consistent at 0.9 % nationally during the study period. CONCLUSION: The inclusion of NHS in national insurance coverage positively influenced its performance rates across South Korea. Nevertheless, the data indicate the need for more focused and customized support for low-income families to enhance early hearing detection and interventions in newborns and infants.

RESUMO

Background: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is characterized by brief, intense episodes of vertigo triggered by abrupt changes in head position. It is generally accepted as being most common in adults, while it is regarded as rare in children. It is necessary to compare the disease between pediatric and adult patients for a better understanding of the disease's characteristics and its natural history. This study aimed to identify the clinical characteristics of BPPV in children and compare them with those of adult BPPV patients. Methods: All children ≤ 18 years old who were diagnosed with BPPV were selected by searching the electronic database of our hospital. Clinical features were identified by medical record review. For adult patients, we collected data from patients > 19 years of age. Results: A total of 30 pediatric (13.65 ± 4.15 years old) and 264 adult patients (60.86 ± 13.74 years old) were included in the study. Among pediatric patients, the lateral canals were involved in 80% and the posterior canals in 16.67%. In adult patients, the lateral and posterior canals were involved similarly (p = 0.007). The degree of nystagmus in pediatric patients was 6.82 ± 12.09, while in adults it was 15.58 ± 20.90 (p < 0.001). The concurrent dizziness disorder was higher in the pediatric group and recurrence was higher in the adult group. In the regression analysis, it was found that adult patients had a stronger nystagmus with a value of 6.206 deg/sec, and the risk of concurrent dizziness disorder was found to be 5.413 times higher in the pediatric group (p < 0.05). Conclusions: BPPV occurs in pediatric patients with lower prevalence, but it cannot be overlooked. In the pediatric group, a relatively high proportion of patients demonstrated lateral canal involvement, weaker nystagmus, and additional dizziness disorder.

RESUMO

Achieving effective polarity control of n- and p-type transistors based on two-dimensional (2D) materials is a critical challenge in the process of integrating transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) into complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) logic circuits. Herein, we utilized a proficient and nondestructive method of electron-charge transfer to achieve a complete carrier polarity conversion from p-to n-type by depositing a thin layer of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) onto tungsten diselenide (WSe2). By utilizing the Al2O3 passivation layer, we observed precisely tuned n-type behavior in contrast to transistors fabricated on the as-grown WSe2 film without any passivation layer, which display prominent p-type behavior. The polarity-transformed n-type WSe2 transistor from the pristine p-type shows the maximum ON current of ∼0.1 µA accompanied by a high electron mobility of 7 cm2 V-1 s-1 at a drain voltage (VDS) of 1 V. We successfully showcased a homogeneous CMOS inverter utilizing 2D-TMDC which exhibits an impressive voltage gain of 7 at VDD = 5 V. Moreover, this effective polarity control approach was further expanded upon to successfully demonstrate a range of logic circuits such as AND, OR, NAND, NOR logic gates, and SRAM. The proposed methodology possesses significant promise for facilitating the advancement of high-density circuitry components utilizing 2D-TMDC.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Given that the majority of colorectal cancers (CRCs) develop from high-risk adenomas, identifying risk factors for high-risk adenomas is important. The relationship between metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) and the risk of colorectal adenoma in young adults remains unclear. We aimed to evaluate this relationship in adults <50 (younger) and ≥50 (older) years of age. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 184 792 Korean adults (80% <50 years of age) who all underwent liver ultrasound and colonoscopy. Participants were grouped into those with and without MAFLD and classified by adenoma presence into no adenoma, low-risk adenoma, or high-risk adenoma (defined as ≥3 adenomas, any ≥10 mm, or adenoma with high-grade dysplasia/villous features). RESULTS: The prevalence of low- and high-risk adenomas among young and older adults was 9.6% and 0.8% and 22.3% and 4.8%, respectively. MAFLD was associated with an increased prevalence of low- and high-risk adenomas in young and older adults. Young adults with MAFLD had a 1.30 (95% CIs 1.26-1.35) and 1.40 (1.23-1.59) times higher prevalence of low- and high-risk adenomas, respectively, compared to those without MAFLD. These associations were consistent even in lean adults (BMI < 23 kg/m2 ) and those without a family history of CRC. CONCLUSIONS: MAFLD is associated with an increased prevalence of low- and high-risk adenomas in Korean adults, regardless of age or obesity status. Whether reducing metabolic risk factors, such as MAFLD, reduces the risk of precancerous lesions and ultimately reduces the risk of early-onset CRC requires further investigation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The role of circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) in the prevention of early-onset colorectal cancer (CRC) in young adults aged <50 years is uncertain. We evaluated the age-stratified associations (<50 vs ≥50 years) between circulating 25(OH)D levels and the risk of CRC in a large sample of Korean adults. METHODS: Our cohort study included 236,382 participants (mean age, 38.0 [standard deviation, 9.0] years) who underwent a comprehensive health examination, including measurement of serum 25(OH)D levels. Serum 25(OH)D levels were categorized as <10, 10 to 20, and ≥20 ng/mL. CRC, along with the histologic subtype, site, and invasiveness, was ascertained through linkage with the national cancer registry. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for incident CRC according to the serum 25(OH)D status, with adjustment for potential confounders. RESULTS: During the 1,393,741 person-years of follow-up (median, 6.5 years; interquartile range, 4.5-7.5 years), 341 participants developed CRC (incidence rate, 19.2 per 105 person-years). Among young individuals aged <50 years, serum 25(OH)D levels were inversely associated with the risk of incident CRC with HRs (95% CIs) of 0.61 (0.43-0.86) and 0.41 (0.27-0.63) for 25(OH)D 10 to 19 ng/mL and ≥20 ng/mL, respectively, with respect to the reference (<10 ng/mL) (P for trend <.001, time-dependent model). Significant associations were evident for adenocarcinoma, colon cancer, and invasive cancers. For those aged ≥50 years, associations were similar, although slightly attenuated compared with younger individuals. CONCLUSIONS: Serum 25(OH)D levels may have beneficial associations with the risk of developing CRC for both early-onset and late-onset disease.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Stapes ankylosis is a rare cause of conductive hearing loss, and stapes suprastructure fixation is extremely rare with fewer than 30 reported cases. Patients usually visit the clinic with non-progressive conductive hearing loss that typically began in the early years of life. CASE SUMMARY: Herein, we report a case of a 37-year-old female with an isolated stapedial suprastructure fixation. The patient presented with unusual fluctuating auditory symptoms of tinnitus, ear fullness and mixed hearing loss. Pre-operative temporal bone computed tomography findings and operative findings revealed an isolated stapedial suprastructure fixation with monopod stapes caused by elongated pyramidal eminence. The hearing threshold recovered completely, and fluctuating auditory symptoms disappeared after the surgery. CONCLUSION: This is the first report of stapedial suprastructure fixation with fluctuating auditory symptoms. Successful results are expected with surgical treatment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aims of this study are to review data on 4-months age National Health Screening Program for Infants and Children (NHSPIC) using a National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) database, and to analyze the newborn hearing screening (NHS) results and related characteristics of the 4-months NHSPIC for 7 years in South Korea. METHODS: We analyzed a NHIS database of infants who had participated in the 4-month age NHSPIC from 2010 to 2016. According to the results of hearing questionnaires and physical examination, we analyzed the outcomes of NHS and related infantile and socioeconomic factors. RESULTS: Among 3,128,924 of total eligible infants in Korea between the year 2010 and 2016, 69.2% (2,164,621 infants) conducted 4-months age NHSPIC, and 94.4% (2,042,577 infants) of which performed hearing questionnaires regarding NHS. Among the total hearing examinees, premature infants accounted for 3.6%, infants who were hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for more than 5 days accounted for 5.6%, and infants with head and neck abnormalities were 0.6%. The NHS performing rate was 79.1% for total hearing examinees in 2010, but gradually increased to 88.9% in 2016. The NHS performing rate in 2016 was 93.4% for premature infants, 91.7% for NICU hospitalized babies. The mean referral rate was 0.6% for total hearing examinees, 1.4% for premature infants, and 2.3% for NICU hospitalized babies. When we analyzed the NHS performing rate and the referral rate according to the household income level, the NHS performing rate of infants in Medical Aid programs was the lowest as 65.6%, and the NHS performing rates in other five levels of NHIS was higher ranging between 85.1% to 86.0%. The referral rate of infants in the Medical Aid program (3.8%) was significantly higher than those of infants in other classes (1.10-1.25%). CONCLUSION: The estimated overall NHS performing rate in Korea gradually increased and was 88.9% in 2016. The overall referral rate was low as 0.6%, and it was significantly different depending on the infant's health condition and household income levels. We assume that our finding would help to establish policies managing hearing impaired children, and to develop the customized hearing care service programs considering the household economic levels.

RESUMO

Newborn hearing screening (NHS) has been covered by national health insurance since October 2018 in Korea. However, the results of the NHS are not reported due to the absence of a follow-up tracking system. This study analyzed the status and the predicted referral rates of NHS after the Korean national health insurance coverage by analyzing the National Health Insurance Service database in 2019 and 2020. The NHS coverage was 91.7% of total birth in 2019 and 92.1% in 2020. The predicted referral rate of NHS calculated by the duplicated NHS cases was 1.05% in 2019 and 0.99% in 2020. However, another predicted referral rate calculated by the number of diagnostic auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) performed was 1.44% in 2019 and 1.43% in 2020. The first NHS was performed within one day of birth for 96.5% of the babies and within three days of birth for 97%. However, diagnostic ABR was adequately performed within three months of birth for only 4.3%, while 82.3% performed the test after six months which delays appropriate intervention for hearing loss. National support such as national coordinators, follow-up tracking, and data management systems are needed for early hearing detection and intervention of newborns and infants in Korea.

RESUMO

This study aimed to evaluate the association between dry eye and inner ear diseases in a Korean population. Methods: Data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey (KNHANES V, 2010−2012), a national cross-sectional health examination and survey, were collected by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The association between dry eye and inner ear disease was determined using the chi-square test and logistic regression analysis. The individuals were divided into two age groups (<60 and ≥60 years). Results: In total, 17,542 individuals (n = 11,932 in the <60 years group and n = 5610 in the ≥60 years group) were enrolled. After adjusting for confounding factors, the logistic regression model revealed that the associated factors were dizziness and loss of balance experience (OR, 1.315; 95% CI, 1.143−1.513), self-awareness of abnormal voice (OR, 1.372; 95% CI, 1.120−1.679), subjective hearing discomfort (OR, 1.278; CI, 1.084−1.506), and tinnitus (OR, 1.265; 95% CI, 1.101−1.453). The inversely associated factor for dry eye was bilateral hearing loss (OR, 0.497; 95% CI, 0.367−0.672). The hearing threshold was lower in the dry eye group than in the non-dry eye group (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Tinnitus was associated with dry eye and bilateral hearing loss was inversely associated with dry eye. These results suggest that hypersensitivity of the senses and nerves, which is neuropathic hyperesthesia, is one of the main mechanisms of dry eye. Treatment of neuropathy may help in treating dry eye associated with dizziness or tinnitus.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Acute alcohol intake is known to cause gait instability, dizziness, and lack of psychomotor coordination. Previous studies demonstrated the positive effects of alcohol on the oculomotor system and the low-frequency vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR). However, the low-frequency VORs is a rather un-physiologic stimulation, and the reported explanations regarding the relations between the alcohol-induced VOR changes and posture control are inconsistent. OBJECTIVE: The present study evaluates how acute alcohol intake affects more physiologic mid- to high-frequency VORs, postural control, and elucidates the connection between the VOR and posture control after alcohol intake. METHODS: A total of 31 healthy volunteers participated. Each participant received calculated amounts of alcohol drinks according to their body weight and genders with the targeted blood alcohol content (BAC) level of 0.05% using the Widmark formula. A vestibular test battery composed of posturography, video head impulse test, rotatory chair test (slow harmonic acceleration (SHA) and step velocity), and subjective visual vertical/horizontal tests (SVV/SVH) were conducted twice in alcohol-free condition (no alcohol intake within 24 h) and acute alcohol condition. RESULTS: Acute alcohol intake decreased stability scores in all NS/EO (normal stability-eyes open), NS/EC (normal stability- eyes closed), PS/EO (perturbed stability-eyes open), and PS/EC (perturbed stability-eyes closed) conditions. High-frequency VOR gains decreased, but mid-frequency VOR gains were not significantly affected by alcohol intake. In addition, time constants were reduced significantly after alcohol ingestion in both clockwise and counter-clockwise rotation. Phase lead in SHA test and SVV/SVH was not affected by alcohol intake. CONCLUSION: Acute alcohol intake affected postural stability, high-acceleration head impulses, and the velocity storage mechanism.

RESUMO

Background: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is regarded as a risk factor for type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). Menopausal status also influences T2DM risk, where estrogen is presumed to play a protective role by decreasing insulin resistance. As such, we investigated the association between NAFLD and DM risk according to menopausal status. Objectives: We sought to examine the association between NAFLD and DM incidence in pre- and post-menopausal women. Methods: A total of 842,772 pre-menopausal and 1,074,767 post-menopausal women who underwent health examinations between 2009 and 2014 were included from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. Multivariate Cox proportional hazard analyses were performed to evaluate the association between the risk of DM according to menopausal status and NAFLD, defined by a fatty liver index >60. Results: During the mean follow-up period (7.8 years), DM was diagnosed in 33,461 (4.0%) of pre-menopausal women and 121,102 (9.4%) post-menopausal women. A stronger association between NAFLD and the risk of DM was found in pre-menopausal women (multivariable-adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 3.60; 95% confidence interval [CI], 3.48−3.71) than in post-menopausal women (aHR, 2.24; 95% CI, 2.21−2.28) (P-interaction < 0.01). Subgroup analyses among women aged 45 to 55 years also showed a stronger association in pre-menopausal (aHR, 3.35; 95% CI, 3.21−3.49) than in post-menopausal women (aHR, 2.83; 95% CI, 2.68−2.98) (P-interaction < 0.01). Conclusions: The association between NAFLD and DM was stronger in pre-menopausal women than in post-menopausal women. This might be due to the protective effect of estrogen, which is possibly in higher production in the peripheral fat tissue of post-menopausal women with NAFLD.

RESUMO

Ototoxicity is the drug-induced damage of the inner ear, causing bilateral irreversible sensorineural hearing loss. Cisplatin is a widely used chemotherapeutic agent which causes ototoxicity as its side effect. Pretreatment with metformin prior to the application of cisplatin significantly decreased the late apoptosis and attenuated the cisplatin-induced increase in ROS. To understand the molecular mechanisms that are involved in the preventive effect of metformin, we evaluated the change of gene expression induced by cisplatin at several different time points (0 h, 6 h, 15 h, 24 h and 48 h) and the alteration of gene expression according to pretreatment with metformin in HEI-OC1 cells through microarray analysis. Cisplatin exposure induced a total of 89 DEGs (differentially expressed genes) after 6 h, with a total of 433 DEGs after 15 h, a total of 941 DEGs after 24 h, and a total of 2764 DEGs after 48 h. When cells were pretreated with metformin for 24 h, we identified a total of 105 DEGs after 6 h of cisplatin exposure, a total of 257 DEGs after 15 h, a total of 1450 DEGs after 24 h, and a total of 1463 DEGs after 48 h. The analysis was performed based on the gene expression, network analyses, and qRT-PCR, and we identified several genes (CSF2, FOS, JUN, TNFα, NFκB, Txnip, ASK1, TXN2, ATF3, TP53, IL6, and IGF1) as metformin-related preventive biomarkers in cisplatin ototoxicity.

RESUMO

Multispectral photodetectors are emerging devices capable of detecting photons in multiple wavelength ranges, such as visible (VIS), near infrared (NIR), etc. Image data acquired with these photodetectors can be used for effective object identification and navigations owing to additional information beyond human vision, including thermal image and night vision. However, these capabilities are hindered by the structural complexity arising from the integration of multiple heterojunctions and selective absorbers. In this paper, we demonstrate a Ge/MoS2 van der Waals heterojunction photodetector for VIS- and IR-selective detection capability under near-photovoltaic and photoconductive modes. The simplified single-polarity bias operation using single pixel could considerably reduce structural complexity and minimize peripheral circuitry for multispectral selective detection. The proposed multispectral photodetector provides a potential pathway for the integration of VIS/NIR vision for application in self-driving, surveillance, computer vision, and biomedical imaging.

RESUMO

Although both obesity and menopause are associated with increased risk of diabetes mellitus (DM), the association between obesity and DM according to menopausal status remains uncertain. Therefore, we conducted a study to examine the relationship between obesity and incidence of diabetes mellitus (DM) in premenopausal and postmenopausal women. Total of 926,196 premenopausal and 1,193,881 postmenopausal women who underwent health examinations from 2009 to 2014 were identified using the database of the Korean National Health Insurance Service. We compared the incidence and risk of DM according to body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) in the two groups of women. Cox proportional hazards analyses were performed to evaluate the association between the presence of obesity and risk of DM according to menopausal state. During the 7.8-year follow-up period, 37,736 (4.1%) premenopausal women and 121,102 (10.1%) postmenopausal women were diagnosed with DM. Compared to the reference group (BMI 18.5-23), a stronger association between obesity and risk of DM was observed in both pre- and postmenopausal women: multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals for BMI subgroups <18.5, 23-25, 25-30, and >30 were 0.62 (0.54, 0.70), 1.91 (1.85, 1.97), 3.38 (3.28, 3.47), and 6.25 (6.02, 6.48), respectively (p trend < 0.001) in premenopausal women and 0.87 (0.82, 0.92), 1.44 (1.41, 1.46), 2.00 (1.97, 2.03), and 2.96 (2.89, 3.02) in postmenopausal women (p trend < 0.001, p-interaction < 0.001). A similar trend was observed for WC. Subgroup analyses of women aged 45 to 55 also showed a stronger association with DM in premenopausal than in postmenopausal women. In conclusion, the association between obesity and DM was stronger in premenopausal women than in postmenopausal women. As estrogens are synthesized in adipose tissue by aromatization of androgens after menopause, increased estrogen levels in obese postmenopausal might have a protective effect against DM.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Approximately 1-6 in every 1000 children are born with hearing loss. An automated auditory brainstem response (AABR) test is essential for screening newborns for abnormal hearing. At the tertiary hospital, we have been using a two-step AABR protocol for newborn hearing assessment since 2005. This study aimed to report the 10-year hearing screening results of newborns at the institution, and prove the efficacy of the two-step AABR protocol. METHODS: From August 2005 to January 2015, 3059 newborns were screened through AABR testing using the MASTER ABaer system. The first screening test was performed after the first 24 h of life. If a newborn was referred, the test was performed within 1 month after discharge from the hospital. The results were regarded as pass when the point optimized variance ratio was >3.5, using a stimulus level of 35 dB HL. When newborns were referred for the second AABR, they received follow-up tests including tympanometry, ABR, auditory steady-state response, and otoacoustic emission within 3 months. RESULTS: A total of 3059 newborns underwent newborn hearing screening tests over a period of 10 years. One hundred and twenty (3.9%) newborns were referred with the initial AABR, and 104 (3.4%) were referred with a subsequent AABR. Of the newborns, 42 (1.37%) were confirmed to have a bilateral hearing impairment. CONCLUSIONS: It is known that the referral rate for the AABR test is 3-4%, as recommended by the Joint Committee on Infant Hearing. Our data showed a referral rate of 3.4%. The two-step AABR test has been useful for screening hearing loss in newborns at tertiary hospital.

RESUMO

There have been conflicting results regarding the association between diabetes and the risk of hematologic malignancies, and its interaction with obesity is unknown. This study determined the risk of hematologic malignancies according to the glycemic status in a population-based study involving health screening 9,774,625 participants. The baseline glycemic status of the participants was categorized into no diabetes, impaired fasting glucose (IFG), newly detected diabetes, diabetes duration <5 years, and diabetes duration ≥5 year groups. The risks of overall and specific hematologic malignancies were estimated using a Cox regression analysis. During a median follow up of 7.3 years, 14,733 hematologic malignancies developed. The adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) for the risk of all the hematologic malignancies was 0.99 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.95-1.02) for IFG, 0.99 (95% CI 0.91-1.08) for newly detected diabetes, 1.03 (95% CI 0.96-1.11) for diabetes duration <5 years, and 1.11 (95% CI 1.03, 1.20) for diabetes duration ≥5 year groups. The association was independent from obesity. The risk of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) increased according to the progression of dysglycemia towards a longer diabetes duration, while Hodgkin's lymphoma did not. This study in Korea demonstrated diabetes to be associated with an increased risk of hematologic malignancies independent of obesity. The NHL risk increased with the diabetes duration.

RESUMO

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have been considered key materials for the future logic devices due to the excellent electrostatic integrity originating from their ultrathin nature. However, the carrier polarity control of 2D material field-effect transistors (FETs) still remains a challenging issue, hindering the realization of complementary logic function in the 2D material platform. Here, we report a comprehensive study on the electrical characteristics of PdSe2 FETs with different metal contacts. It is found that the carrier polarity in PdSe2 FETs can be modulated simply by changing the metal contact due to the weak Fermi-level pinning in PdSe2. We demonstrate a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) inverter using the same channel material PdSe2 for n- and p-MOSFETs but with different metal contacts, suggesting the possible realization of PdSe2-based CMOS logic circuits.

RESUMO

Recently, the inherent piezoelectric properties of the 2D transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) tin monosulfide (SnS) and tin disulfide (SnS2) have attracted much attention. Thus the piezoelectricity of these materials has been theoretically and experimentally investigated for energy-harvesting devices. However, the piezoelectric output performance of the SnS2- or SnS-based 2D thin film piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG) is still relatively low, and the fabrication process is not suitable for practical applications. Here we report the formation of the SnS2/SnS heterostructure thin film for the enhanced output performance of a PENG using atomic layer deposition (ALD). The piezoelectric response of the heterostructure thin film was increased by ∼40% compared with that of the SnS2 thin film, attributed to large band offset induced by the heterojunction formation. Consequently, the output voltage and current density of the heterostructure PENG were 60 mV and 11.4 nA/cm2 at 0.6% tensile strain, respectively. In addition, thickness-controllable large-area uniform thin-film deposition via ALD ensures that the reproducible output performance is achieved and that the output density can be lithographically adjusted depending on the applications. Therefore, the SnS2/SnS heterostructure PENG fabricated in this work can be employed to develop a flexible energy-harvesting device or an attachable self-powered sensor for monitoring pulse and human body movement.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Protease-activated receptor 1 (PAR1) is a GPCR expressed in several skin cell types, including keratinocyte and dermal fibroblast. PAR1 activation plays a crucial role in the process of skin wound healing such as thrombosis, inflammation, proliferation and tissue repair. In the present study, we identified a novel positive allosteric modulator of PAR1, GB83, and investigated its effect on skin wound healing. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: The enhancement of PAR1 activity by GB83 was measured using Fluo-4 calcium assay. In silico docking analysis of GB83 in PAR1 was performed using dock ligands method (CDOCKER) with CHARMm force field. Effects of GB83 on cell viability and gene expression were observed using MTS assay and quantitative real-time PCRs, respectively. SKH-1 hairless mice were used to investigate the wound healing effect of GB83. KEY RESULTS: We demonstrated that GB83 did not activate PAR1 by itself but strongly enhanced PAR1 activation by thrombin and PAR1-activating peptide (AP). In silico docking analysis revealed that GB83 can bind to the PAR1 binding site of vorapaxar. GB83 significantly promoted PAR1-mediated cell viability and migration. In addition, the enhancement of PAR1 activity by GB83 strongly increased gene expression of TGF-ß, fibronectin and type I collagen in vitro and promoted skin wound healing in vivo. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS: Our results revealed that GB83 is the first positive allosteric modulator of PAR1 and it can be a useful pharmacological tool for studying PAR1 and a potential therapeutic agent for skin wound healing.
