Purpose To develop a prediction model combining both clinical and CT texture analysis radiomics features for predicting pneumothorax complications in patients undergoing CT-guided core needle biopsy. Materials and Methods A total of 424 patients (mean age, 65.6 years ± 12.7 [SD]; 232 male, 192 female) who underwent CT-guided core needle biopsy between January 2021 and October 2022 were retrospectively included as the training data set. Clinical and procedure-related characteristics were documented. Texture analysis radiomics features were extracted from the subpleural lung parenchyma traversed by needle. Moderate pneumothorax was defined as a postprocedure air rim of 2 cm or greater. The prediction model was developed using logistic regression with backward elimination, presented by linear fusion of the selected features weighted by their coefficients. Model performance was assessed using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Validation was conducted in an external cohort (n = 45; mean age, 58.2 years ± 12.7; 19 male, 26 female) from a different hospital. Results Moderate pneumothorax occurred in 12.0% (51 of 424) of the training cohort and 8.9% (four of 45) of the external test cohort. Patients with emphysema (P < .001) or a longer needle path length (P = .01) exhibited a higher incidence of moderate pneumothorax in the training cohort. Texture analysis features, including gray-level co-occurrence matrix cluster shade (P < .001), gray-level run-length matrix low gray-level run emphasis (P = .049), gray-level run-length matrix run entropy (P = .003), gray-level size-zone matrix gray-level variance (P < .001), and neighboring gray-tone difference matrix complexity (P < .001), showed higher values in patients with moderate pneumothorax. The combined clinical-radiomics model demonstrated satisfactory performance in both the training (AUC 0.78, accuracy = 71.9%) and external test cohorts (AUC 0.86, accuracy 73.3%). Conclusion The model integrating both clinical and radiomics features offered practical diagnostic performance and accuracy for predicting moderate pneumothorax in patients undergoing CT-guided core needle biopsy. BACKGROUND: This study aimed to report the long-term survival of fixed-bearing medial unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) with a mean of 14-year follow-up, and to determine possible risk factors of failure. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 337 fixed-bearing medial UKAs implanted between 2003 and 2014. Demographic and radiographic parameters were measured, including pre-operative and post-operative anatomical femorotibial angle (aFTA), posterior tibial slope (PTS), and anatomical medial proximal tibial angle (aMPTA). Multivariate logistic regression analysis was applied to figure out risk factors. RESULTS: The mean follow-up time was 14.0 years. There were 32 failures categorized into implant loosening (n = 11), osteoarthritis progression (n = 7), insert wear (n = 7), infection (n = 4), and periprosthetic fracture (n = 3). Cumulative survival was 91.6% at 10 years and 90.0% at 15 years. No statistically significant parameters were found between the overall survival and failure groups. Age and hypertension were significant factors of implant loosening with odds ratio (OR) 0.909 (p = 0.02) and 0.179 (p = 0.04) respectively. In the insert wear group, post-operative aFTA and correction of PTS showed significance with OR 0.363 (p = 0.02) and 0.415 (p = 0.03) respectively. Post-operative aMPTA was a significant factor of periprosthetic fracture with OR 0.680 (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The fixed-bearing medial UKA provides successful long-term survivorship. Tibial component loosening is the major cause of failure. Older age and hypertension were factors with decreased risk of implant loosening.

As the population ages, the number of patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) continues to increase. Infections after primary arthroplasty are rare but have high rates of morbidity and mortality, as well as enormous financial implications for healthcare systems. Numerous methods including the use of superhydrophobic coatings, the incorporation of antibacterial agents, and the application of topographical treatments have been developed to reduce bacterial attachment to medical devices. However, most of these methods require complex manufacturing processes. Thus, the main purpose of this study was to apply biocoatings to titanium (Ti) surfaces to increase their infection resistance and osteoconductivity via simple processes, without organic reagents. We modified titanium surfaces with a combination of aminomalononitrile (AMN) and an antibiotic-loaded mesoporous bioactive glass (MBG) and evaluated both the antibacterial effects of the coating layer and its effect on osteoblast proliferation and differentiation. The properties of the modified surface, such as the hydrophilicity, roughness, and surface morphology, were characterized via contact angle measurements, atomic force microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The cell proliferation reagent WST-1 assay and the alkaline phosphatase (ALP) assay were used to determine the degrees of adhesion and differentiation, respectively, of the MG-63 osteoblast-like cells on the surface. Antimicrobial activity was evaluated by examining the survival rate and inhibition zone of Escherichia coli (E. coli). The AMN coating layer reduced the water contact angle (WCA) of the titanium surface from 87° ± 2.5° to 53° ± 2.3° and this change was retained even after immersion in deionized water for five weeks, demonstrating the stability of the AMN coating. Compared with nontreated titanium and polydopamine (PDA) coating layers, the AMN surface coating increased MG-63 cell attachment, spreading, and early ALP expression; reduced E. coli adhesion; and increased the percentage of dead bacteria. In addition, the AMN coating served as an adhesion layer for the subsequent deposition of MBG-containing antibiotic nanoparticles. The synergistic effects of the AMN layer and antibiotics released from the MBG resulted in an obvious E. coli inhibition zone that was not observed in the nontreated titanium group.

The microalgal-based production of fucoxanthin has emerged as an imperative research endeavor due to its antioxidant, and anticancer properties. In this study, three brown marine microalgae, namely Skeletonema costatum, Chaetoceros gracilis, and Pavlova sp., were screened for fucoxanthin production. All strains displayed promising results, with Pavlova sp. exhibiting the highest fucoxanthin content (27.91 mg/g) and productivity (1.16 mg/L·day). Moreover, the influence of various cultivation parameters, such as culture media, salinity, sodium nitrate concentration, inoculum size, light intensity, and iron concentration, were investigated and optimized, resulting in a maximum fucoxanthin productivity of 7.89 mg/L·day. The investigation was further expanded to large-scale outdoor cultivation using 50 L tubular photobioreactors, illustrating the potential of Pavlova sp. and the cultivation process for future commercialization. The biomass and fucoxanthin productivity for the large-scale cultivation were 70.7 mg/L·day and 4.78 mg/L·day, respectively. Overall, the findings demonstrated considerable opportunities for fucoxanthin synthesis via microalgae cultivation and processing.

Healing of large calvarial bone defects remains challenging. An RNA-guided Split dCas12a system is previously harnessed to activate long non-coding RNA H19 (lncRNA H19, referred to as H19 thereafter) in bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). H19 activation in BMSCs induces chondrogenic differentiation, switches bone healing pathways, and improves calvarial bone repair. Since adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) can be harvested more easily in large quantity, here it is aimed to use ASCs as an alternative cell source. However, H19 activation alone using the Split dCas12a system in ASCs failed to elicit evident chondrogenesis. Therefore, split dCas12a activators are designed more to co-activate other chondroinductive transcription factors (Sox5, Sox6, and Sox9) to synergistically potentiate differentiation. It is found that co-activation of H19/Sox5/Sox6 in ASCs elicited more potent chondrogenic differentiation than activation of Sox5/Sox6/Sox9 or H19 alone. Co-activating H19/Sox5/Sox6 in ASCs significantly augmented in vitro cartilage formation and in vivo calvarial bone healing. These data altogether implicated the potentials of the Split dCas12a system to trigger multiplexed gene activation in ASCs for differentiation pathway reprogramming and tissue regeneration.

Aims: Therapeutic agents that prevent chondrocyte loss, extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation, and osteoarthritis (OA) progression are required. The expression level of epidermal growth factor (EGF)-like repeats and discoidin I-like domains-containing protein 3 (EDIL3) in damaged human cartilage is significantly higher than in undamaged cartilage. However, the effect of EDIL3 on cartilage is still unknown. Methods: We used human cartilage plugs (ex vivo) and mice with spontaneous OA (in vivo) to explore whether EDIL3 has a chondroprotective effect by altering OA-related indicators. Results: EDIL3 protein prevented chondrocyte clustering and maintained chondrocyte number and SOX9 expression in the human cartilage plug. Administration of EDIL3 protein prevented OA progression in STR/ort mice by maintaining the number of chondrocytes in the hyaline cartilage and the number of matrix-producing chondrocytes (MPCs). It reduced the degradation of aggrecan, the expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-13, the Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) score, and bone remodelling. It increased the porosity of the subchondral bone plate. Administration of an EDIL3 antibody increased the number of matrix-non-producing chondrocytes (MNCs) in cartilage and exacerbated the serum concentrations of OA-related pro-inflammatory cytokines, including monocyte chemotactic protein-3 (MCP-3), RANTES, interleukin (IL)-17A, IL-22, and GROα. Administration of ß1 and ß3 integrin agonists (CD98 protein) increased the expression of SOX9 in OA mice. Hence, EDIL3 might activate ß1 and ß3 integrins for chondroprotection. EDIL3 may also protect cartilage by attenuating the expression of IL-1ß-enhanced phosphokinase proteins in chondrocytes, especially glycogen synthase kinase 3 alpha/beta (GSK-3α/ß) and phospholipase C gamma 1 (PLC-γ1). Conclusion: EDIL3 has a role in maintaining the cartilage ECM and inhibiting the development of OA, making it a potential therapeutic drug for OA.

Background and Objectives: The efficacy of tranexamic acid (TXA) in reducing perioperative blood loss during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is well established. However, the potential synergistic blood-conservation effect of topical fibrin sealant (Tisseel@) remains unclear. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of the combination of Tisseel and TXA during TKA. Materials and Methods: A single-blinded, prospective, randomized controlled trial was conducted with 100 patients (100 knees) undergoing primary TKA. Participants were randomly assigned to either the TXA group (n = 50), receiving intravenous (IV) TXA, or the Tisseel@ + TXA group (n = 50), receiving intra-articular Tisseel@ combined with IV TXA. The primary outcomes included blood transfusion rate, decrease in Hb level, calculated blood loss, and estimated total postoperative blood loss. Secondary outcomes involved assessing clinical differences between the groups. Results: The transfusion rate was zero in both groups. The average estimated blood loss in the Tisseel@ + TXA group was 0.463 ± 0.2422 L, which was similar to that of the TXA group at 0.455 ± 0.2522 L. The total calculated blood loss in the Tisseel@ + TXA group was 0.259 ± 0.1 L, compared with the TXA group's 0.268 ± 0.108 L. The mean hemoglobin reduction in the first 24 h postoperatively was 1.57 ± 0.83 g/dL for the Tisseel@ + TXA group and 1.46 ± 0.82 g/dL for the TXA-only group. The reduction in blood loss in the topical Tisseel@ + TXA group was not significantly different from that achieved in the TXA-only group. The clinical results of TKA up to the 6-week follow-up were comparable between the groups. Conclusions: The combination of the topical fibrin sealant Tisseel@ and perioperative IV TXA administration, following the described protocol, demonstrated no significant synergistic blood-conservation effect in patients undergoing TKR.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) often have comorbid generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), which requires early screening in respiratory clinics. The Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) questionnaire is a brief and commonly used screening tool for GAD but has not been validated among patients with COPD in China. METHODS: Stable patients with COPD from a cross-sectional observational study were assessed using the GAD-7 questionnaire and then assessed by a senior psychiatrist to confirm a diagnosis of GAD according to the criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition. Demographic characteristics, spirometry, and patient-reported outcomes were collected. Cronbach's α coefficient was calculated, and receiver operating curve (ROC) analysis was performed to validate the GAD-7. RESULTS: A total of 226 patients with COPD were enrolled, and 50 (22.1%) of these patients were diagnosed with GAD. The Cronbach's α coefficient for the GAD-7 was 0.869, which indicated good internal consistency. ROC curve analysis showed that the GAD-7 had an area under the curve (AUC) value of 0.829 (95% CI: 0.774-0.876) for identifying GAD. The optimal cut-off score was ≥ 4, with a sensitivity of 66.0% and a specificity of 89.2%. Higher GAD-7 scores were significantly associated with health-related quality of life and the symptom burden of COPD. The discriminatory power of GAD-7 did not differ statistically when stratified by COPD severity. CONCLUSIONS: The GAD-7 was shown to be a reliable and valid screening tool for patients with COPD in China, and its screening performance for GAD was not influenced by disease severity.

Previous studies have shown that split-ring resonators (SRRs) can be utilized to achieve finely tuned nearest-neighbor coupling strengths in various one-dimensional hopping models. In our study, we present a systematic investigation of resonator coupling, providing a comprehensive quantitative description of the interaction between SRRs and complementary split-ring resonators (CSRRs) for any orientation combination. Our method includes an estimation of the coupling strength through a linear combination of periodic functions based on two orientation angles, with a sinusoidal expansion of up to the 3rd order, allowing for efficient and streamlined microwave structure design. Through our approach, we offer a satisfactory explanation of the band structure of SRR chains using a microwave-hopping model, which facilitates the exploration of exotic photonic band structures based on tight-binding theory.

STR/ort mice spontaneously exhibit the typical osteoarthritis (OA) phenotype. However, studies describing the relationship between cartilage histology, epiphyseal trabecular bone, and age are lacking. We aimed to evaluate the typical OA markers and quantify the subchondral bone trabecular parameters in STR/ort male mice at different weeks of age. We then developed an evaluation model for OA treatment. We graded the knee cartilage damage using the Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) score in STR/ort male mice with or without GRGDS treatment. We measured the levels of typical OA markers, including aggrecan fragments, matrix metallopeptidase-13 (MMP-13), collagen type X alpha 1 chain (COL10A1), and SRY-box transcription factor 9 (Sox9), and quantified epiphyseal trabecular parameters. Compared to the young age group, elderly mice showed an increased OARSI score, decreased chondrocyte columns of the growth plate, elevated expression of OA markers (aggrecan fragments, MMP13, and COL10A1), and decreased expression of Sox9 at the articular cartilage region in elderly STR/ort mice. Aging also significantly enhanced the subchondral bone remodeling and microstructure change in the tibial plateau. Moreover, GRGDS treatment mitigated these subchondral abnormalities. Our study presents suitable evaluation methods to characterize and measure the efficacy of cartilage damage treatments in STR/ort mice with spontaneous OA.

Healing of large calvarial bone defects in adults is challenging. We previously showed that inducing chondrogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells from bone marrow (BMSC) or adipose tissue (ASC) before implantation can switch the repair pathway and improve calvarial bone healing. Split dCas12a activator is a new CRISPR activation system comprising the amino (N) and carboxyl (C) fragments of dCas12a protein, each being fused with synthetic transcription activators at both termini. The split dCas12a activator was shown to induce programmable gene expression in cell lines. Here we exploited the split dCas12a activator to activate the expression of chondroinductive long non-coding RNA H19. We showed that co-expression of the split N- and C-fragments resulted in spontaneous dimerization, which elicited stronger activation of H19 than full-length dCas12a activator in rat BMSC and ASC. We further packaged the entire split dCas12a activator system (13.2 kb) into a hybrid baculovirus vector, which enhanced and prolonged H19 activation for at least 14 days in BMSC and ASC. The extended H19 activation elicited potent chondrogenic differentiation and inhibited adipogenesis. Consequently, the engineered BMSC promoted in vitro cartilage formation and augmented calvarial bone healing in rats. These data implicated the potentials of the split dCas12a activator for stem cell engineering and regenerative medicine.

PURPOSE: The advantages of unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) have led to the procedure being increasingly performed worldwide. However, revision surgery is required after UKA failure. According to the literature review, the choice of implant in revision surgery remains a debatable concern. This study analyzed the clinical results of different types of prostheses used in treating failed UKA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective review of 33 failed medial UKAs between 2006 and 2017. Demographic data, failure reason, types of revision prostheses, and the severity of bone defects were analyzed. The patients were classified into three groups: primary prosthesis, primary prosthesis with a tibial stem, and revision prosthesis. The implant survival rate and medical cost of the procedures were compared. RESULTS: A total of 17 primary prostheses, 7 primary prostheses with tibial stems, and 9 revision prostheses were used. After a mean follow-up of 30.8 months, the survival outcomes of the three groups were 88.2%, 100%, and 88.9%, respectively (P = 0.640). The common bone defect in tibia site is Anderson Orthopedic Research Institute [AORI] grade 1 and 2a (16 versus 17). In patients with tibial bone defects AORI grade 2a, the failure rates of primary prostheses and primary prostheses with tibial stems were 25% and 0%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The most common cause for UKA failure was aseptic loosening. The adoption of a standardized surgical technique makes it easier to perform revision surgeries. Primary prostheses with tibial stems provided higher stability, leading to a lower failure rate due to less risk of aseptic loosening in patients with tibial AORI grade 2a. In our experience, we advise surgeons may try using primary prostheses in patients with tibial AORI grade 1 and primary prostheses with tibial stems in patients with tibial AORI grade 2a.

Alternative protein sources for the reduction/replacement of fish meal in aqua-feeds are in urgent demand. Microalgae are considered sustainable protein sources for aquaculture due to their high-quality proteins with a complete profile of essential amino acids. This study examined the heterotrophic production of proteins from Chlorella sorokiniana SU-9. Culture parameters for maximal biomass and protein production are as follows: glucose - 10 g/L glucose, sodium nitrate - 1.5 g/L, and iron - 46 µM iron in BG-11 medium. Under optimal conditions, biomass content, protein content and protein productivity of SU-9 reached 4.14 ± 0.20 g/L, 403 ± 33 mg/g and 382 ± 36 mg/L/d, respectively. The protein profile of Chlorella sorokiniana SU-9 is comparable to fishmeal and soybean meal. The essential amino acids arginine, lysine and cysteine, along with glutamine and glutamate, were high. The production cost of SU-9 can be significantly reduced under heterotrophic cultivation conditions, making it a potential protein substitute in aquafeed.

BACKGROUND: Two-stage exchange arthroplasty is considered the gold standard treatment for chronic periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). However, there is a scarcity of research investigating the major risk factors for infection recurrence and the prognosis after infection recurrence. METHODS: This study included 203 patients who underwent 2-stage exchange arthroplasty between June 22, 2010 and January 24, 2017. The need of reoperation for infection-related or PJI-related mortality was considered treatment failure. Participant age, gender, body mass index, comorbidities, culture results, length of hospital stay, cause of treatment failure, operative procedure, and fate were analyzed. RESULTS: Fifty-three patients experienced treatment failure (26.1%). Mean follow-up was 63 months (range, 26-103). Based on the multivariate analyses, risk factors for treatment failure included men and positive intraoperative culture during reimplantation. Recurrent infection was most commonly caused by Staphylococcus aureus (32.1%, 17/53), and new microorganisms caused recurrent infection in 34 of 53 (64.2%) patients. In 44 patients who had treatment failure, debridement, antibiotic therapy, irrigation, and retention of prosthesis (DAIR) performed within 6 months of reimplantation and at <3 weeks from symptom onset resulted in a significantly higher success rate than the use of other DAIR protocols (P = .031). CONCLUSION: Men and positive intraoperative culture are major risk factors for 2-stage exchange arthroplasty failure in patients who have knee PJI. Recurrent infection in these patients is usually caused by new microorganisms. DAIR within 6 months of reimplantation and at <3 weeks from symptom onset results in good outcomes in these patients.

RESUMO

A dynamical control of the coupling strengths between dressed states and probe photon states is demonstrated with a transmon-like artificial atom coupled to two closely spaced resonant modes. When the atom is driven with one mode, the atom state and driving photon states form the so-called dressed states. Dressed states with sideband index up to 3 were prepared and probed via the strong coupling to the other resonant mode. Spectroscopy reveals that the coupling strengths are "dressed" and can be modulated by the power and sideband index of the driving. The transmission of the probe tone is modulated by the driving microwave amplitude with a Bessel behavior, displaying multi-photon process associated with the inter-atomic level transitions.

PURPOSE: Nontuberculous mycobacteria periprosthetic joint infection (NTMPJI) is a rare complication of hip or knee joint arthroplasty. The experience for outcomes of NTMPJI treatment is still limited. The objective of this study was to investigate the outcome of hip or knee nontuberculous mycobacteria periprosthetic joint infection following treatment with two-stage exchange arthroplasty. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From 1995 to 2020, 12 patients with NTMPJI were treated with two-stage exchange arthroplasty at our institution. We collected and analyzed variables including demographic data, comorbidity, microbiological data, treatment outcome and antibiotic formula in bone cement. RESULTS: Mycobacterium abcessus (n = 6) and Mycobacterium chelonae (n = 2) constitute the majority of the cases. Five patients had early-onset PJIs and the other seven patients were late onset. The success rate of two-stage exchange arthroplasty was 66.7% (8 of 12). Three patients experienced infection relapse, and one patient had soft tissue compromise complication. Post-operative antibiotic therapy may not improve the success rate (4 of 6 cases, 66.7%). Based on in vitro study, the most commonly used effective antibiotic in bone cement spacer for nontuberculous mycobacteria was amikacin. CONCLUSIONS: nontuberculous mycobacteria is a rare cause of PJIs and should be suspected especially in relatively immunocompromised patients. Resection arthroplasty with staged reimplantation is the preferred approach. Prolonged post-operative antibiotic therapy before reimplantation may not improve the success rate. Delayed revision surgery may not be needed and can be performed once C-reactive protein level is normal after a drug holiday.

The use of extended antibiotic (EA) prophylaxis (> 24 h) remains controversial in aseptic revision arthroplasty. We sought to determine whether EA prophylaxis reduces the risk of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) in aseptic revision hip and knee arthroplasty. A total of 2800 patients undergoing aseptic revision hip and knee arthroplasty at five institutional databases from 2008 to 2017 were evaluated. One to two nearest-neighbor propensity score matching analysis was conducted between patients who did and did not receive extended antibiotic prophylaxis. The matching elements included age, sex, body mass index, Charlson comorbidity index, hospital distribution, year of surgery, joint (hip or knee), surgical time, CRP, preoperative hemoglobin, albumin, and length of stay. The primary outcome was the development of PJI, which was assessed at 30 days, 90 days, and 1 year following revision and analyzed separately. A total of 2467 (88%) patients received EA prophylaxis, and 333 (12%) patients received standard antibiotic (SA) prophylaxis (≤ 24 h). In the propensity-matched analysis, there was no difference between patients who received EA prophylaxis and those who did not in terms of 30-day PJI (0.3% vs. 0.3%, p = 1.00), 90-day PJI (1.7% vs. 2.1%, p = 0.62) and 1- year PJI (3.8% vs. 6.0%, p = 0.109). For revision hip, the incidence of PJI was 0.2% vs 0% at 30 days (p = 0.482), 1.6% vs 1.4% at 90 days (p = 0.837), and 3.4% vs 5.1% at 1 year (p = 0.305) in the EA and SA group. For revision knee, the incidence of PJI was 0.4% vs 0.9% at 30 days (p = 0.63), 1.8% vs 3.4% at 90 days (p = 0.331), and 4.4% vs 7.8% at 1 year (p = 0.203) in the EA and SA group. A post hoc power analysis revealed an adequate sample size with a beta value of 83%. In addition, the risks of Clostridium difficile and resistant organism infection were not increased. This multi-institutional study demonstrated no difference in the rate of PJIs between patients who received extended antibiotic prophylaxis and those who did not in aseptic revision arthroplasty. The risk of C. difficile and resistant organism infection was not increased with prolonged antibiotic use.

We report on a holoscope axion search experiment near 19.6 µeV from the Taiwan Axion Search Experiment with Haloscope collaboration. This experiment is carried out via a frequency-tunable cavity detector with a volume V = 0.234 liter in a magnetic field B0 = 8 T. With a signal receiver that has a system noise temperature Tsys ≅ 2.2 K and an experiment time of about one month, the search excludes values of the axion-photon coupling constant gaγγ ≳ 8.1 × 10-14 GeV-1, a factor of 11 above the Kim-Shifman-Vainshtein-Zakharov benchmark model, at the 95% confidence level in the mass range of 19.4687-19.8436 µeV. We present the experimental setup and procedures to accomplish this search.

Industrial adoption of microalgae biofuel technology has always been hindered by its economic viability. To increase the feasibility of bioethanol production from microalgae, fermentation was applied to Chlorella vulgaris FSP-E biomass at high-solids loading conditions. First, Chlorella vulgaris FSP-E was cultivated to produce microalgae biomass with high carbohydrate content. Next, different ethanol-producing microorganisms were screened. Saccharomyces cerevisiae FAY-1 showed no inhibition when fermenting high initial glucose concentrations and was selected for the fermentation experiments at high-solids loadings. Optimization of acid hydrolysis at high biomass loading was also performed. The fermentation of microalgal biomass hydrolysate produced a final ethanol concentration and yield higher than most reported literature using microalgae feedstock. In addition, the kinetics of bioethanol fermentation of microalgae hydrolysate under high-solids loading were evaluated. These results showed the potential of fermenting microalgae biomass at high-solids loading in improving the viability of microalgae bioethanol production.

This Letter reports on the first results from the Taiwan Axion Search Experiment with a Haloscope, a search for axions using a microwave cavity at frequencies between 4.707 50 and 4.798 15 GHz. Apart from the nonaxion signals, no candidates with a significance of more than 3.355 were found. The experiment excludes models with the axion-two-photon coupling |g_{aγγ}|≳8.1×10^{-14} GeV^{-1}, a factor of eleven above the benchmark Kim-Shifman-Vainshtein-Zakharov model, in the mass range 19.4687
