RESUMO

The need for targeted pest control strategies has led to the development of juvenile hormone (JH) mimics that selectively disrupt the life cycles of harmful insect species. Present study focuses on the synthesis, characterization and evaluation of sulfonyl-acetohydrazide derivatives (H1-H8) as novel JH mimics on two different insect species, with an emphasis on their insect-specific action. The yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti and cabbage leaf borer, Spodoptera litura, were selected for this investigation. Our results indicate that while these compounds exhibit negligible effects on the development of Aedes aegypti, they demonstrate a potent and specific action against Spodoptera litura. The sulfonyl-acetohydrazide derivatives induced significant developmental abnormalities and increased mortality rates in Spodoptera litura larvae, leading to a marked disruption in their life cycle. Additionally, Density Functional Theory methods were employed to elucidate the electronic structure and corelate the reactivity of the synthesized compounds with the insect growth regulating activity (IGR). The DNA-binding study of synthesized JH analogs has been carried out using UV-vis spectroscopy for toxicity assessment against biomolecule DNA. All the synthesized JH analogs (H1-H8) show IGR action and exhibit better reactivity and reduced toxicity as compared to the commercial in use IGR, pyriproxyfen.

Serum and glucocorticoid-regulated kinases (SGK) are serine/threonine kinases that belong to AGC. The SGK-1, which responds to stress, controls a range of ion channels, cell growth, transcription factors, membrane transporters, cellular enzymes, cell survival, proliferation and death. Its expression is highly controlled by various factors such as hyperosmotic or isotonic oxidative stress, cell shrinkage, radiation, high blood sugar, neuronal injury, DNA damage, mechanical stress, thermal shock, excitement, dehydration and ischemia. The structural and functional deterioration that arises after a period of ischemia when blood flow is restored is referred to as ischemia/ reperfusion injury (I/R). The current review discusses the structure, expression, function and degradation of SGK-1 with special emphasis on the various ischemic injuries in different organs such as renal, myocardial, cerebral, intestinal and lungs. Furthermore, this review highlights the various therapeutic agents that activate the SGK-1 pathway and slow down the progression of I/R injuries.

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery disease is the most common cause of cardiovascular disease. Smoking is one of the triggering factors for CAD, which increases mortality and morbidity rates. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of the SMART heart package on high-risk adults' knowledge and practice of coronary artery disease prevention. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A quasi-experimental research study was conducted in India from March 25 to April 23, 2022, through a house-to-house survey. This survey was conducted among 200 adults out of 159 high-risk adults who were identified by a screening tool, using a systematic random sampling technique to select 60 subjects for the study. A SMART heart package intervention was administered for selected high-risk adults. The pre-test and the post-test were conducted using self-administered structured questionnaires for knowledge and a non-observation checklist for practice. The data had been analyzed by the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 20.0. RESULTS: The findings show that at the baseline level of knowledge and practice, the majority of the subjects had inadequate knowledge 43 (71.7%) and 51 (85.0%) had poor practice, whereas after administration of the SMART heart package, 29 (48.3%) of subjects had moderately adequate knowledge and 29 (48.3%) had average practice. At baseline, the mean score was 41.5%, which increased to 79.1% on knowledge and 37.2% to 72.5% on practice after the implementation of the intervention, which was statistically significant (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Hence, the SMART heart package was effective in increasing the level of knowledge and practice of CAD prevention among high-risk adults.

This research paper aims at studying the impact of lockdown on the dynamics of novel Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) emerged in Wuhan city of China in December 2019. Perceiving the pandemic situation throughout the world, Government of India restricted international passenger traffic through land check post (Liang, 2020) and imposed complete lockdown in the country on 24 March 2020. To study the impact of lockdown on disease dynamics we consider a three-dimensional mathematical model using nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The proposed model has been studied using stability theory of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. Basic reproduction ratio is computed and significant parameters responsible to keep basic reproduction ratio less than one are identified. The study reveals that disease vanishes from the system only if complete lockdown is imposed otherwise disease will always persist in the population. However, disease can be kept under control by implementing contact tracing and quarantine measures as well along with lockdown if lockdown is imposed partially.

BACKGROUND: The omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) have well-characterized effects on inflammation and oxidative stress and may have neuroprotective effects in a number of neurodegenerative conditions including AD. Brain tissue contains large amounts of polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are particularly vulnerable to free radical injury. PURPOSE: The present study attempts to examine protective effects of docosahexaenoic acid (100 mg/kg body weight) and on aluminum (100 mg/kg b. wt. of AlCl3) mediated oxidative damage in the cerebellum in male albino rats along with the motor and learning ability and morphological changes. METHODS: Twenty four male Rattusnorigious, Wistar strain rats (weight 220 ± 10 grams) were randomly divided into four groups (n = 12) viz. Group 1 served as control treated with normal saline, Group 2 treated with 100mg/kg body weight of DHA, Group three treated with 100 mg/kg body weight of AlCl3 and Group four treated with 100mg AlCl3 + 100 mg DHA for 90 days. Dose was directly introduced into the rat pharynx via a feeding cannula to rats for 90 days. Behavioral tests followed by biochemical analysis was performed. RESULTS: A significant decrease in the antioxidant status (superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione) and increased lipid peroxide levels and protein carbonyl content in aluminum exposed rats was noted. After DHA supplementation these effects were reversed. Moreover, DHA also significantly (p<0.05) prevented aluminum induced dysfunctioning of the motor and learning ability. The light microscopic studies revealed altered Purkinje's neurons and granular layer. These changes were not seen in the DHA treated rats. CONCLUSION: On the basis of our results it may be concluded that Al may be linked with cerebellar degeneration and neuromuscular disorders while DHA helps to prevent these alterations.
