Gibberellic acid (GA3) is one of the plant growth regulators which improve salt tolerance and mitigate the salt stress impact on plants. The extant analysis was carried out to study the effect of GA3 and different salt concentrations on seed germination and physiological parameters of oat cultivars. Oats is substantially less tolerant to salt than wheat and barley. Experimentation was conducted as factorial with Completely Randomized Block Design with three replicates. Different concentration of NaCl salt ((25, 50, 75 and 100 mM) were used in test control group and 100 and 150 ppm of GA3 were used in two group by pre-treated (after 24 h of the seed soaking) and plants were analyzed on 15th day. Results indicate that increasing salinity would decrease the germination percentage and growth parameter in three oat cultivars. Quotes data indicating a 13%, 19.9% and 32.48% in cultivars NDO-2, UPO-212 and UPO-94 germination reduction when soil salinity reaches 50 mM. A 36.02%, 47.33% and 56.365 reduction in germination is likely when soil salinity reaches 100 mM respectively same cultivars. Seeds treated with GA3 significantly promoted the percentage of germination, shoot and root length, total fresh and dry weight of seedling, tissue water content and seedling vigor index by NDO-2 and UPO-212 under different saline concentration. The maximum average of germination and growth parameters were observed from 150 ppm GA3 treated seeds. But this concentration was significantly inhibited root length in sensitive cultivar UPO-94 at 75 and 100 mM salt as compared to 100 ppm. We observed that, the high concentration of GA3 was not suitable for sensitive oat cultivars. Because the plant root are the real workforce behind any plants success. Thus, it may be concluding that, GA3 treatment could curtail the toxic effect of salinity by increasing germination percentage and shoot and root length, total fresh and dry weight, tissue water content and seedling vigor index in tolerant cultivar.

The onset of the 21st century has started a corresponding change in consumer lifestyles, resulting in the generation of a huge amount of the end-of-life electronics, known as e-waste. The e-waste recycling activities can pose a high risk to the environment and human health. We monitored air pollution levels (PM10) and heavy metal concentrations (Pb, Cu, Zn, Ni and Cr) in the air for three consecutive months in an area where illegal e-waste recycling was in operation and compared the results with other two residential sites. In addition, we measured the concentrations of the same heavy metals in human blood to find out if there exists any correlation between environmental and biological exposure. Hypoxemia and hypertension were also determined for the comparison of health status amongst the study population. The study design comprised of three sites, which were selected on the basis of different major activities in the respective areas. Air samples were collected with the help of RDS and subjected to heavy metals analysis by ICP-OES, whereas blood samples were analyzed by ICP-MS. Results showed that amongst all study sites significant highest mean concentration of PM10 (243.310 ±â€¯22.729 µg/m3) and its heavy metal was found at e-waste burning site (SIII). High levels of heavy metal in the air were responsible for the higher exposure to the residents of SIII. Therefore, the study concluded that e-waste burning by the informal sector has significantly contributed to the high levels of the air pollution, which in turn was responsible for the highest level of heavy metal exposure to the residents. This was also associated with the occurrence of cardiovascular morbidity namely hypertension amongst the inhabitants of SIII may indicate the effect of chronic exposure to the air pollution due to e-waste processing activities, which needs to be studied further.

BACKGROUND: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a cancer of the oral cavity that is a major health problem in India. There is an urgent need to identify biomarkers that have prognostic significance. We studied HIF-1α levels as well as single-nucleotide polymorphism of HIF-1α gene in cancer and healthy controls. METHODS: Fifty newly diagnosed OSCC patients and 50 age and sex-matched healthy control were included in the study. Serum concentrations of HIF-1α were measured by sandwich ELISA; whereas HIF-1α gene polymorphism study was performed using restriction enzyme digestion by HpH I. RESULTS: The major genotype observed was CC genotype in both control (84%) and patients (86%) followed by CT genotype (control 16%, cases 14%). CT genotype led to more aggressive tumors. On subgroup analysis based on prognosis, the median overall survival of patients who were treatment responders was 488 days (16.2 months) and that of the patients with progressive disease was 365 days (12.1 months). The patients who expired during the study observation period had median survival of 330 days (11 months). CONCLUSION: Our study showed that CT genotype for C1772T polymorphism of HIF-1α predisposes to aggressive tumor phenotype in patients with OSCC. Moreover, patients with CT genotype had poor survival rate as compared to CC genotype. A cut-off value of 460 pg/mL of HIF-1α can help to segregate patients with OSCC from healthy controls.

RESUMO

Chordomas are uncommon tumors of the bone representing 1-4 % of all primary bone tumors. These typically involve axial skeleton. Primary nasal presentation of chordoma is a rare occurrence and is usually misdiagnosed till the histopathological confirmation. We present a case of chordoma in nasal cavity treated by wide local resection and also present a review of literature discussing various facets in its presentation and management.

RESUMO

As the use of firearms has become increasingly common in the civilian society, the incidences of homicidal as well as suicidal firearm injury have increased several folds. We here present an interesting case of celebratory firing which accidently caused injury in the head & neck region and an unusual trajectory adopted by the bullet which prevented a fatal outcome.
