RESUMO

This study reported for the first time that Ascorbic acid (AA) could appreciably boost the efficiency of Octyl gallate (OG)-mediated photodynamic inactivation (PDI) on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus in planktonic and biofilm states. The combination of OG (0.075 mM) and AA (200 mM) with 420 nm blue light (212 mW/cm2) led to a >6 Log killing within only 5 min for E. coli and S. aureus and rapid eradication of biofilms. The mechanism of action appears to be the generation of highly toxic hydroxyl radicals (•OH) via photochemical pathways. OG was exposed to BL irradiation to generate various reactive oxygen radicals (ROS) and the addition of AA could transform singlet oxygen (1O2) into hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which could further react with AA to generate enormous •OH. These ROS jeopardized bacteria and biofilms by nonspecifically attacking various biomacromolecules. Overall, this PDI strategy provides a powerful microbiological decontamination modality to guarantee safe food products.

RESUMO

Male fertility and metabolic disorders, including obesity and diabetes, are closely connected. Since hyperuricemia and metabolic syndrome are strongly related, male fertility and hyperuricemia may, to some degree, be associated. According to recent studies, hyperuricemia imposes various effects on sex hormones, semen quality, and male erectile dysfunction. Some researchers claim that uric acid worsens male semen and raises the risk of erectile dysfunction (ED), while others state that it safeguards both penile erection and male semen. Additionally, it has been shown that gout and metabolic syndrome also raise the risk of ED. To clarify this controversy, the influence and potential mechanisms of hyperuricemia on ED, semen quality, sex hormone levels, and the effects of hyperuricemia-related disorders on ED will be comprehensively summarized.

RESUMO

While photodynamic inactivation (PDI) has emerged as a novel sterilization strategy for drinking water treatment that recently attracted tremendous attention, its efficiency needs to be further improved. In this study, we aimed to clarify the ultraefficient mechanism by which potassium iodide (KI) potentiates octyl gallate (OG)-mediated PDI against bacteria and biofilms in water. When OG (0.15 mM) and bacteria were exposed to blue light (BL, 420 nm, 210 mW/cm2), complete sterilization (>7.5 Log cfu/mL of killing) was achieved by the addition of KI (250 mM) within only 5 min (63.9 J/cm2). In addition, at lower doses of OG (0.1 mM) with KI (100 mM), the biofilm was completely eradicated within 10 min (127.8 J/cm2). The KI-potentiated mechanism involves in situ rapid photogeneration of a multitude of reactive oxygen species, especially hydroxyl radicals (•OH), reactive iodine species, and new photocytocidal substances (quinone) by multiple photochemical pathways, which led to the destruction of cell membranes and membrane proteins, the cleavage of genomic DNA and extracellular DNA within biofilms, and the degradation of QS signaling molecules. This multitarget synergistic strategy provided new insights into the development of an environmentally friendly, safe, and ultraefficient photodynamic drinking water sterilization technology.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical therapeutic effect on functional erectile dysfunction (FED) of kidney deficiency and liver stagnation treated by Baixiao moxibustion and qiangshen shugan qiwei decoction. METHODS: A total of 120 patients with FED were randomized into an observation group (60 cases, 2 cases dropped off) and a control group (60 cases, 4 cases dropped off). In the control group, the patients were treated with oral qiangshen shugan qiwei decoction (Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata, Rhizoma Dioscoreae, Rhizoma Curculiginis, Herba Epimedii, etc.), one dose daily. In the observation group, on the base of the treatment as the control group, Baixiao moxibustion was exerted along the distribution of governor vessel on the back, 30 min each time, once a week. The treatment duration was 4 weeks in the two groups. Before and after treatment, the scores of international index of erectile function-5 (IIEF5), erectile hardness scale (EHS), erectile dysfunction inventory of treatment satisfaction (EDITS) and TCM symptoms were observed in the patients of the two groups. Before and after treatment, the levels of serum sex hormones (testosterone [T], luteinizing hormone [LH], estradiol [E2], prolactin [PRL]) and the expressions of relevant proteins (matrix metalloproteinase-3 [MMP-3], matrix metalloproteinase-9 [MMP-9] and vascular endothelial growth factor [VEGF]) were determined in the patients of the two groups separately. The penile vascular function (peak systolic velocity [PSV], end-diastolic velocity [EDV], resistance index [RI]) was compared before and after treatment. Besides, the clinical therapeutic effect was evaluated. RESULTS: After treatment, the scores of IIEF5, EHS and EDITS were all increased as compared with the values before treatment (P<0.05), and the scores of TCM symptoms were reduced as compared with the values before treatment in the patients of the two groups (P<0.05). After treatment, the scores of IIEF5, EHS and EDITS in the observation group were higher than those in the control group (P<0.05), and the score of TCM symptoms was lower than the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, the levels of T and LH in serum of the two groups and the expressions of serum MMP-3 and MMP-9 in the observation group were all increased as compared with those before treatment (P<0.05), the levels of E2 and PRL in the observation group and VEGF expressions in the two groups were all reduced as compared with those before treatment (P<0.05). The levels of serum T and LH and the expressions of MMP-3 and MMP-9 in the observation groups were all higher than those in the control group (P<0.05), and the levels of E2 and PRL and VEGF expression were lower than the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, PSV was increased and EDV was reduced as compared with those before treatment in the patients of the two groups (P<0.05), RI in the observation group was reduced as compared with that before treatment (P<0.05). After treatment, PSV in the observation group was higher and EDV and RI were lower than the control group (P<0.05). The total effective rate was 87.9% (51/58) in the observation group, higher than 76.8% (43/56) in the control group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The combined therapy of Baixiao moxibustion and qiangshen shugan qiwei decoction effectively increases erectile function, erectile hardness and treatment satisfaction in the patients with functional erectile dysfunction of kidney deficiency and liver stagnation, as well as improves penile vascular function. The effect mechanism of this therapy may be related to the regulation of serum sex hormones and relevant proteins.

RESUMO

An excellent bactericidal effect of octyl gallate (OG)-mediated photodynamic inactivation (PDI) against foodborne pathogens (Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus) was evaluated in relation to the mode of action. UV-A irradiation (wavelength, 365 nm; irradiance, 8.254 ± 0.18 mW/cm2) of the bacterial suspension containing 0.15 mM OG could lead to a >5-log reduction of viable cell counts within 30 min for E. coli and only 5 min for S. aureus. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation was considered the main reason for the bactericidal effect of OG + UV-A light treatment because toxic ROS induced by OG-mediated PDI could attack the cellular wall, proteins, and DNA of microbes. Moreover, the bactericidal effect, as well as the yields of ROS, depended on OG concentrations, irradiation time, and laser output power. Furthermore, we prepared an edible photodynamic antimicrobial membrane comprising electrospun cyclodextrin nanofibers (NFs) by embedding OG. The resultant OG/HPßCD NFs (273.6 µg/mL) under UV-A irradiation for 30 min (14.58 J/cm) could cause a great reduction (>5-log) of viable bacterial counts of E. coli. The in situ photodynamic antibacterial activity of OG/HPßCD NF-based packaging was evaluated during the Chinese giant salamander storage. Overall, this research highlights the dual functionalities (antibacterial and photodynamic properties) of OG as both an antibacterial agent and photosensitizer and the effectiveness of electrospun NFs containing OG as an active antibacterial packaging material for food preservation upon UV light illumination.

RESUMO

A portion of detected breast masses might be overrated by using the Breast Imaging-Reporting and Data System ultrasonography (BI-RADS US) lexicon. A principal component regression-based contrast-enhanced ultrasound (PCR-CEUS) evaluation system was built to quantitatively illustrate whether CEUS could help radiologists to differentiate 4A masses. The PCR-CEUS evaluation system, based on principal component analysis (PCA) and logistic regression, was verified by random assignment into training and test sets and shown to reduce the data dimension and avoid collinearity in CEUS variables. This prospective study consecutively collected 238 patients with 238 4A masses confirmed pathologically. All enrolled patients accepted CEUS examination. The diagnostic performance of senior and junior radiologists, PCR-CEUS and combined methods was compared. The PCR-CEUS system had consistent diagnostic performance in both the training and test sets, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.831 (0.765-0.897), 0.798 (0.7034-0.892) and 0.854 (0.765-0.943) (all P > 0.05). The AUC of the combined diagnostic model (PCR-CEUS + Senior radiologists) was higher than that of senior radiologists, and the combined model had higher sensitivity (0.875 (0.781-0.969) vs. 0.729 (0.603-0.855)) without compromising specificity. Furthermore, the AUC and specificity of the combined model (PCR-CEUS + Junior radiologists) (0.852 (0.787-0.916)) was higher than that of junior radiologists (0.665 (0.592-0.737) (P < 0.00001)). PCR-CEUS demonstrated good ability in differentiating malignant BI-RADS-US 4A masses and was helpful for both senior and junior radiologists.

RESUMO

Since Pseudomonas fluorescens is the main microorganism causing severe spoilage in refrigerated aquatic products, the searching for non-antibiotic antibacterial agents effective against it continues to receive increasing interest. This study aimed to investigate the antibacterial effects and mechanisms of alkyl gallic esters against P. fluorescens isolated from the Russian sturgeon (Acipenser gueldenstaedti), as well as the effectiveness in combination with chitosan films on the preservation of sturgeon meats at 4 °C. Our data shows that the alkyl chain length plays a significant role in eliciting their antibacterial activities and octyl gallate (GAC8) exhibited an outstanding inhibitory efficacy. GAC8 can rapidly enter into the membrane lipid bilayer portion to disorder the membrane, and further inhibit the growth of the P. fluorescens through interfering both tricarboxylic acid cycle related to energy supply and amino acid metabolism associated with cell membranes, suppressing oxygen consumption and disturbing the respiration chain. Moreover, the alteration in membrane fatty acids indicated that GAC8 could disrupt the composition of cell membrane fatty acids, rendering the bacteria more sensitive to the antibacterial. The SEM results also substantiate the damage of the structure of the bacterial membrane caused by GAC8. Additionally, the edible chitosan-based films incorporated with GAC8 showed the enhanced antibacterial efficacy to remarkably extend the shelf life of Russian sturgeon. Overall, our findings not only provide new insight into the mode of action of GAC8 against P. fluorescens but also demonstrate composite films containing GAC8, as a kind of safe and antibacterial material, have a great promise for application in food preservations.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical effect of Yishen Tongluo Recipe (YTR) combined with minimally invasive surgery (MIS) in the treatment of varicocele-associated asthenospermia (of the kidney-deficiency and collateral-obstruction type). METHODS: We randomly divided 116 patients with varicocele-associated asthenospermia and up to the inclusion criteria into three groups and treated them by YTR combined with MIS (low spermatic vein ligation at the external inguinal ring orifice under the microscope) (the YTR+MIS group, n = 39), YTR alone (the YTR group, n = 38), or MIS alone (the MIS group, n = 39). At 12 weeks after treatment, we compared the total effectiveness rate, the percentage of progressively motile sperm (PMS), sperm straight line velocity (VSL), sperm DNA fragmentation index (DFI) and symptoms among the three groups of patients. RESULTS: After treatment, the total effectiveness rate was significantly higher in the YTR+MIS than in the YTR and the MIS group (89.74% vs 63.16% and 64.10%, P < 0.05), and so were the percentage of PMS (31.67 ± 3.93 vs 24.48 ± 3.15 and 25.57 ± 3.37, P < 0.05) and VSL (ï¼»30.19 ± 5.32ï¼½ vs ï¼»27.19 ± 5.48ï¼½ and ï¼»27.55 ± 5.24ï¼½ µm/s, P < 0.05), but the DFI was remarkably lower in the former than in the latter two groups (11.25 ± 8.27 vs 15.87 ± 5.45 and 15.26 ± 4.36, P < 0.05). The symptoms were improved more significantly in the YTR+MIS than in the YTR and MIS groups (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Yishen Tongluo Recipe combined with minimally invasive surgery, as an effective and safe strategy, can significantly improve sperm quality and sperm DNA integrity in patients with varicocele-associated asthenospermia.

RESUMO

With the globalisation of Chinese medicine (CM), the local CM education institutions were established in many other countries outside of China. These CM education institutions have formed a new mode in CM education after integrating with local culture, law and national conditions. This article takes New Zealand CM education institutions as an example to discuss the characteristics of CM education under the British education system, aiming to provide ideas on CM education in China and other countries.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore the protective effect of Yishen Tongluo Recipe (YTR) against aberrant sperm DNA methylation in male rats exposed to benzo(a)pyrene (BaP). METHODS: Thirty male SD rats of the SPF grade were randomly divided into three groups of equal number: solvent control, BaP exposure and YTR intervention. The animals of the solvent control group were injected intraperitoneally with 0.5% DMSO while those of the other two groups with BaP at 0.1 mg/kg/d, all for 60 days, and at 31 days of BaP exposure, those of the YTR group were treated intragastrically with YTR for 30 days. Then, the left epididymides were harvested from all the rats and sperm suspensions collected and centrifuged for extraction of sperm DNA. The methylated DNA immunoprecipitation sequencing (MeDIP-seq) technique was used to detect the whole-genome DNA methylation in different groups. RESULTS: Exposure to BaP induced the up-regulation of 828 genes encoding mRNA in the sperm DNA, while YTR intervention produced a significant protective effect on the transforming growth factor ß3 (TGF-ß3), cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) and recombination activating gene 1 (RAG1), and down-regulated the expressions of 3 227 genes. BaP exposure also caused the up-regulation of 783 genes encoding lncRNA in the sperm DNA, and YTR treatment exhibited an evident protective effect on 62 of the up-regulated genes, induced the down-regulation of 3 378 genes, and showed a protective effect on 56 of the down-regulated genes. CONCLUSIONS: YTR has a protective effect against aberrant sperm DNA methylation in male rats exposed to BaP, which may be associated with lncRNA.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: An association between catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) 158G/A polymorphism and endometriosis/adenomyosis susceptibility has been reported in the previous studies, but the results were inconsistent. This study was conducted to explore this association in the Chinese population using meta-analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: PubMed, Springer Link, Ovid, Chinese Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Chinese Biology Medicine were searched for all relevant studies published up to December 2015. The odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to estimate the strength of the associations. RESULTS: A total of 7 case-control studies including 782 cases and 700 controls were included in this meta-analysis. Overall, COMT 158G/A polymorphism was found to be significantly associated with endometriosis and adenomyosis risk in the Chinese population (A vs. G, OR = 1.21, 95% CI: 1.02-1.42; AA vs. GG, OR = 1.47, 95% CI: 1.01-2.14; AA vs. GG + GA, OR = 1.42, 95% CI: 0.99-2.03; AA + GA vs. GG, OR = 1.20, 95% CI: 0.97-1.49). In subgroup analyses stratified by ethnicity, source of controls and disease groups, the significant risk was found in Chinese not mentioned the ethnicity, in population-based studies and adenomyosis. CONCLUSIONS: COMT 158G/A polymorphism may contribute to the risk of endometriosis and adenomyosis in Chinese, particularly for adenomyosis.

RESUMO

Aspidistra subrotata Y. Wan & C.C. Huang, 1987 is considered for the first time as a widespread polyploidy complex in the genus Aspidistra Ker Gawler, 1823 from limestone areas of Asia. The chromosome number of the tetraploid is 2n = 76 and the karyotype is formulated as 2n = 44 m + 8 sm + 24 st, while the chromosome number of the diploid is 2n = 38 and the karyotype formula 2n = 22 m + 4 sm + 12 st. In our studies, diploids occupy broader geographical and environmental niche spaces than tetraploids. Although the leaf-shape of Aspidistra subrotata varies quantitatively between and within diploid and/or tetraploid population(s), no obvious discontinuity in the width of leaf has been observed. The tetraploid plants may be distinguished from the diploid plants by their rigid petioles as well as thick deep green lamina. Aspidistra subrotata is therefore an interesting material to explore the formation and the evolutionary dynamics of a natural polyploid complex from limestone areas of the tropical regions.

RESUMO

Cancer of the colon and rectum are two distinct entities, which require different treatment strategies and separate treatment. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) act as critical regulators of genes involved in several biological processes. Aberrant alterations of miRNAs have been found in several types of cancer, including colon cancer and rectal cancer. Extensive catalogues of downregulated miRNAs have been identified for colon cancer, whereas only limited data are available for rectal cancer. An example of miRNA profiling in a previous study found that miRNA (miR)144 showed aberrant expression and appeared to be rectal cancerspecific, its expression not being reported in colon cancer. In the present study, the role of miR144 in rectal cancer was investigated. SW837 and SW1463 cell lines were selected as rectal cell carcinoma cells. Using reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction, western blot, BrdU, cell migration and cell viability assays, it was found that the expression levels of miR144 were significantly reduced in the SW837 and SW1463 cell lines, and the overexpression of miR144 suppressed rectal cancer cell viability, migration and proliferation. In addition, Rhoassociated coiledcoil containing protein kinase 1 (ROCK1) was identified as a target of miR144 in the rectal cancer cells. The supplementation of ROCK1 markedly restored the cell migration and proliferation, which was inhibited by miR144. Together, the data of the present study demonstrated that miR144 acts as a tumor suppressor by targeting ROCK1, and indicates the potential of miR144 as a novel biomarker and target in the treatment of rectal cancer.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The current reports on the association of claudin-4 expression with gastric cancer outcome were inconsistent. Thus, we conducted a meta-analysis to assess the association of claudin-4 expression with the prognosis and clinical parameters more precisely. METHODS: Systematic searches on PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library prior to December 2014 were performed. The pooled hazard ratio (HR) with its 95 % confidence interval (95 %CI) was used to assess the prognostic value of claudin-4 expression with gastric cancer patients, and the pooled odds ratio (OR) with its 95 %CI was used to assess the association with clinical parameters. RESULTS: Nine studies with a total of 1265 gastric cancer patients were included. Overall, the pooled results showed that over-expression of claudin-4 was associated with a poor survival in gastric cancer patients (HR: 2.01, 95 % CI: 1.62-2.50). Over-expression of claudin-4 was also associated with advanced stage (OR: 1.96, 95 % CI: 1.08-3.56) and lymphoid node metastasis (OR: 1.72, 95 % CI: 1.05-2.81) of gastric cancer patients. No significant publication bias was found among the studies (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis shows that over-expression of claudin-4 is associated with progress of gastric cancer and poor prognosis of gastric cancer patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Vivax malaria was historically epidemic in Henan Province of China and Anopheles sinensis was the main vectors and poor farming communities bare the greatest burden of disease. Knockdown resistance in An. sinensis is one of the mechanisms of resistance against pyrethroids. In the present study, the frequency of mutations from An. sinensis was examined in Henan province, China. METHODS: Anopheles was collected from Kaifeng, Tongbai, Tanghe, Pingqiao, Shihe, and Yongcheng counties of Henan province in 2013. Molecular identification of Anopheles species was conducted by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplifying the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2). Part of the IIS6 domain of the para-type sodium channel protein gene was polymerase chain reaction-amplified and directly sequenced. Frequency and geographic difference of kdr gene mutant types were analysed. RESULTS: 208 Anopheles were received molecular identification, of which 169 (81.25%) were An. sinensis, 25 (12.02%) were Anopheles yatsushiroensis, and 12 (5.77%) were Anopheles lesteri. A 325 bp fragment of the para-type sodium channel gene including position 1014 was successfully sequenced from 139 Anopheles, of which 125 (89.93%) were An. sinensis, 12 (8.63%) were An. yatsushiroensis, 2 (1.44%) were An. lesteri. The molecular analyses revealed that mutations existed at codon 1014 in An. sinensis but not in An. yatsushiroensis and An. lesteri. Frequency of kdr mutation was 73.60% (92/125) from population of An. sinensis in Henan province, of which L1014F (TTT + TTC) allele frequencies accounted for 46.40% (58/125), and was higher than that of L1014C(TGT) which accounted for 27.20% (34/125) ( χ2 = 55.423, P < 0.001). The frequency of kdr mutation in Kaifeng county was 100% (49/49), and was higher than that of 37.93% (11/29) in Tongbai, 54.55% (6/11) in Pingqiao, 50.00% (3/3) in Shihe, and 62.50% (10/16) in Yongcheng county, respectively (χ2 = 39.538, P < 0.001; χ2 = 24.298, P < 0.001; χ2 = 25.913, P < 0.001; χ2 = 20.244, P < 0.001). While 92.86% (13/14) frequency of kdr mutation was found in Tanghe county, which was higher than that in Tongbai county (χ2 = 11.550, P = 0.0018). CONCLUSIONS: A high frequency of kdr gene mutations from population of An. sinensis in Henan province was found.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the sensitivity of Anopheles sinensis to DDT, cyfluthrin, malathion and deltamethrin. METHODS: In June 2009, 417, 421 and 433 mosquitoes were respectively captured from the fields of Tongbai county, Huaibin county, Yongcheng city, and tested by the adult Anopheles filter contact method recommended by WHO. The KT50 and the mortality rate of 24 h-post-exposure to 4% DDT (1.428 g/m2), 0.15% cyfluthrin (0.0 534 g/m2), 5% malathion (1.78 g/m2), 0.05% deltamethrin (0.0 178 g/m2) were calculated. The resistance level was graded as sensitive group (S) with a mortality rate of 98%-100%, preliminary resistance group (M) with mortality rate of 80%-97%, and resistance group (R) with mortality rate lower than 80%. RESULTS: The KT50 of An. sinensis to DDT in Tongbai, Huaibin and Yongcheng were 206.13, 877.04 and 826.81 min, respectively; the KT50 to cyfluthrin was 206.43, 85.39, and 427.60 min, respectively; the KT50 to malathion was 19.98, 48.05 and 97.79 min, respectively; the KT50 to deltamethrin was 1122.50, 89.65, and 960 min, respectively. The mortality rate of An. sinensis in 24h-post-exposure to 4% DDT was 82.52%, 57.41%, and 65.69%, and the resistance degree was judged as M, R and R, respectively. That to 0.15% cyfluthrin was 91.89%, 85.00%, and 72.73%, with a resistance degree of M, M, and R, respectively. That to 5% malathion was 95.10%, 95.37%, and 93.16%, all with a resistance degree of M. That to 0.05% deltamethrin was 92.08%, 77.14%, and 63.46%, with a resistance degree of M, R and R, respectively. CONCLUSION: An. sinensis in Henan Province has developed high degree of resistance to DDT, cyfluthrin and deltamethrin, and certain degree of resistance to malathion

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate Anopheline species in Chayu County of Linzhi Prefecture, Tibet. METHODS: Four natural villages in Chayu County were selected in this study in 2010. The methods of overnight/semi-overnight trapping indoor and outdoor human-bait, and overnight trapping with light traps were used, and all the Anopheline mosquitoes were confirmed by morphological characteristics. RESULTS: Totally 2 991 Anopheline mosquitoes were captured, with 76.36% (2 284/2 291) of An. peditaeniatus, 22.30% (667/2 291) of An. maculates group. The average densities of An. peditaeniatus by semi-overnight trapping were 56.2/per person indoor and 4/per person outdoor respectively, and the average densities of An. maculatus group by semi-overnight trapping were 17.8/per person indoor and 17.9/per person outdoor respectively. The man-biting rates of An. peditaeniatus by overnight trapping were 28.1/per person indoor and 2/per person outdoor respectively, and were both 8.9/per person to An. maculatus group. CONCLUSION: An. peditaeniatus and An. maculatus group are the possible transmission vectors of malaria in Chayu County.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To analyze epidemiological characteristics of burn inpatients in Hainan province over 8 years. METHODS: Six thousand and ninety-nine burn patients admitted to 6 hospitals of Hainan province from January 2002 to December 2009 were enrolled in the study. The clinical data of these patients were analyzed retrospectively, including age, gender, injury cause, wound position, burn area, ailment prior to admission, admission time, medical insurance, length of hospital stay, and mortality rate, relationship among inpatient distribution, admission time, and ambient temperature at the time of admission. Data were processed with SPSS 13.0 software. RESULTS: There were more burn male patients than female, with ratio of 2.1: 1.0. Most patients were younger than 13 years (57.2%, 3488/6099). The most common burn area was smaller than or equal to 10% TBSA (67.4%, 4108/6099), and the fewest patients had burn areas of over 50% TBSA (2.0%, 121/6099). The main causative agents were hot liquid and flame, accounting for 71.5% (4358/6099), 17.9% (1092/6099), respectively. Most patients had injuries of more than two body areas (60.7%, 3705/6099), and lower extremity injury (17.1%, 1042/6099) was predominant in wound of single body area. Among 703 cases who had other ailments prior to admission (11.5%), the highest rate of prior ailments was found in patients older than 60 years (18.5%, 48/260), it was lowest in children younger than 1 year (8.0%, 32/398). The length of hospital stay was 1 to 375 day, and the admission time was 10 minutes to 90 days after burn. Total mortality rate was 0.4% (26 cases). The number of inpatients aged from 19 to 59 was obviously higher in months with high ambient temperature (from June to August), and for inpatients younger than 13 years the incidence of burn injury showed no obvious seasonal change. The inpatients who had medical insurance accounted for 10.9% (66/603) to 19.5% (121/619) from 2002 to 2005, which increased to 46.0% (372/808) in 2007 and 79.1% (869/1098) in 2009. CONCLUSIONS: For burn inpatients in Hainan province, the main injury cause of burn injury is hot liquid, the number of burn adults aged from 19 to 59 seems to increase in months with high ambient temperature, while the incidence of burn in children showed no obvious seasonal change. The number of inpatients and those with medical insurance showed a tendency of increase from 2005 to 2009 in Hainan province.

RESUMO

Imported falciparum malaria data of Henan Province in 2005-2009 were collected and statistically analyzed by using Microsoft Office Excel 2003. A total of 84 imported falciparum malaria cases with one death were reported during 2005-2009. The ratio of males to females was 20 : 1(80/4). The average age was (34 +/- 11) years old. Seventy-five patients returned from Africa, occupying 89.3%. The number of annual cases reported in 2008 (24 cases) and 2009 (32 cases) was higher than that in 2005-2007(9-10 cases). The top three high-risk populations were farmers (34 cases), workers (17 cases) and the cadre (13 cases), accounted for 76.2% of all cases. The cases were reported every month, of which 37 cases (44.0%) were reported in June and July. All cases had a history of prior residence in falciparum malaria endemic area, and the initial symptom was fever. The average interval from symptom appearing to diagnosis was (5.9 +/- 8.6) d, only 21.4% (18/84) of the patients was diagnosed within 24h. There were 72 laboratory-confirmed cases (85.7%). Seventeen cases (22.1%) were reported by county level medical treatment units. A total of 83 cases recovered with the treatment of artemisinin-based combination drugs. One case died with serious cerebral malaria. Effective measures should be carried to control the increasing trend of imported falciparum malaria.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To observe the injury on micro-skin induced by a self designed micro-skin machine. METHODS: Micro-skin was produced either with the machine or by hand. Cells at the edge of micro-skin were observed by transmission electron microscope. succinic dehydrogenase activity in supernatant of cultivated cells was analyzed, and the cell proliferation of micro-skin was assessed by (3)H-TdR. Twenty patients were enrolled in the study for the observation of the wound healing time between the two groups of micro-skin after being grafted. RESULTS: Transmission electron microscope examination revealed that the cellular injury at the edge of the micro-skin in machine-made group was mild compared with that in man-made group. (3)H-TdR rate was elevated but the activity of succinic dehydrogenase in the supernatant of cultured cells decreased in supernatant of cultured cells of machine produced micro-skin. Wound healing time was shortened in machine made group. (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The cellular injury at the edge of micro-skin in the machine made group was mild when compared with that in the man-made group with cell proliferation accelerated and wound healing time shortened.
