Objective: This study investigates the relationship between the Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) and cognitive function among elderly individuals, aiming to understand how increased antioxidant intake affects cognitive abilities in an aging population. Methods: Utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2011 to 2014, we analyzed a sample of 2,516 participants aged 60 and above. Cognitive performance was assessed using the CERAD Word Learning and Recall Test, the Animal Fluency Test, and the Digit Symbol Substitution Test. Multivariable regression models were adjusted for demographic, dietary, and health-related factors to explore the association between CDAI scores and cognitive outcomes. Results: The regression analyses showed a statistically significant positive association between higher CDAI scores and cognitive performance across several tests. Specifically, increments in CDAI were associated with increased scores in the CERAD Word Learning Test: Score 1 (ß = 0.04, 95% CI [0.03, 0.06]), Score 2 (ß = 0.04, 95% CI [0.02, 0.05]), Score 3 (ß = 0.04, 95% CI [0.02, 0.06]), and the Delayed Recall Test (ß = 0.04, 95% CI [0.01, 0.06]). Additionally, significant improvements were observed in the Animal Fluency Test (ß = 0.19, 95% CI [0.14, 0.24]) and the Digit Symbol Test (ß = 0.55, 95% CI [0.39, 0.71]). Subgroup analyses further highlighted that higher CDAI scores conferred more pronounced cognitive benefits in women, individuals aged 80 and above, Non-Hispanic Black people, and those with lower educational levels, suggesting that dietary antioxidants might be particularly beneficial in these groups. Conclusion: An antioxidant-rich diet may represent a viable intervention to mitigate age-related cognitive decline, supporting cognitive health in the elderly. These results underscore the potential public health implications of dietary recommendations aimed at increasing antioxidant consumption among older adults. Further studies are necessary to confirm these findings and to investigate the underlying mechanisms in detail.

BACKGROUND: Glucagon-like-peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1s) are a newer class of obesity medications that have garnered significant attention by the public and media. Media reports suggest that medical interventions such as GLP-1s are often perceived as weight loss "shortcuts." PURPOSE: The present experimental research tested the effect of exposure to medical weight loss interventions on GLP-1 policy support, dependent on body mass index. METHODS: A sample of 440 participants (Mage = 37, SD = 12.6) were randomly assigned to read about a woman who lost 15% of her body weight either with a GLP-1, bariatric surgery, or diet/exercise. Participants reported on beliefs that the woman took a weight loss "shortcut" and support for three policies expanding GLP-1 coverage. RESULTS: Exposure to a woman who lost weight with GLP-1 or bariatric surgery (vs. diet/exercise) led to higher GLP-1 policy support. However, such exposure was also indirectly associated with lower policy support, partially mediated by weight loss "shortcut" beliefs. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides evidence that exposure to medical weight loss interventions leads to higher GLP-1 policy support. Exposure may also, indirectly, lead to lower policy support due to beliefs that such interventions are shortcuts. Findings have implications for policymakers who are interested in how perceptions of medical weight loss interventions influence support for obesity treatments and related health policies.

We have implemented a constrained CASSCF(2,2) calculation so as to study thermal electron transfer between a chlorine ion and a cluster of lithium atoms of variable size (from 1 to 17). Our calculations illustrate how the geometry of the ground state-charge transfer state crossing point (as well as the strength of a diabatic coupling) can depend sensitively on the number of metal ions (i.e., the size of the cluster) and the relative positioning of the donor and acceptor. Thus, this set of calculations is an initial step toward understanding the transition from homogeneous to heterogeneous electron transfer. In the future, these constrained calculations should allow us to model still far larger systems, ideally opening up a pathway to study meaningful electrochemical phenomena.

6:2 Fluorotelomer alcohol (6:2 FTOH) is a raw material used in the manufacture of short-chain poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances. Our previous study revealed that gestational exposure to 6:2 FTOH can impair bloodâbrain barrier (BBB) function in offspring, accompanied by anxiety-like behavior and learning memory deficits. The aim of this study was to further investigate the specific mechanism by which maternal exposure to 6:2 FTOH resulted in impaired BBB function in offspring mice. Pregnant mice were orally administered different doses of 6:2 FTOH (0, 5, 25, and 125 mg/kg/day) from gestation day 8.5 until delivery. These results confirmed that maternal 6:2 FTOH exposure impaired BBB function and disrupted the brain immune microenvironment. Subsequent investigations revealed that endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndMT) in the cerebral microvascular endothelium of offspring may be the mechanism mediating functional disruption of the BBB. Mechanistic studies revealed that exposure to 6:2 FTOH upregulated ETS proto-oncogene 1 (ETS1) expression via the tumor necrosis factor-α/extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 signaling pathway, which mediated disturbances in energy metabolism, leading to impaired actin dynamics and subsequently triggering the EndMT phenotype. This is the first finding indicating that gestational 6:2 FTOH exposure caused functional impairment of the BBB through ETS1-mediated EndMT in cerebral microvascular endothelial cells, potentially providing novel insight into the environmental origins of neurodevelopmental disorders.

Myopia is a global public health concern, with a higher prevalence in women than that in male. As the relationship between sex hormone and myopia remains unclear, we aimed to reveal the relationship between sex hormone and myopia by removing the ovaries of mice and measuring changes in ocular parameters related to myopia. Lens-induced myopia (LIM) surgeries were performed on 3-week-old male mice and age-matched female mice to evaluate the effects of sex on myopia development, which indicated a high degree of myopia and rapid progression of axial elongation in male mice. Bilateral ovariectomy (OVX) performed on 4-week-old female mice induced myopic refraction status in ovariectomized mice. Although axial length elongation was larger in ovariectomized mice than that in sham control mice, the result was insignificant. To further reveal the relationship between female sex hormones and myopia, LIM combined with OVX was performed, which revealed a magnified myopic refraction status in ovariectomized mice. Nevertheless, elongation of the anterior chamber depth in the - 30 D lens-treated eyes significantly increased in LIM + OVX mice compared with the frame-treated eyes in LIM + OVX mice and - 30 D lens-treated eyes in LIM + Sham surgery mice. Sex hormones play a role in regulating myopia development in female mice.

Gene-environment interaction (GxE) concepts underlie a proper understanding of complex disease risk and risk-reducing behavior. Communicating GxE concepts is a challenge. This study designed an educational intervention that communicated GxE concepts in the context of eating behavior and its impact on weight, and tested its efficacy in changing knowledge, stigma, and behavior motivation. The study also explored whether different framings of GxE education and matching frames with individual eating tendencies would result in stronger intervention impact. The experiment included four GxE education conditions and a control condition unrelated to GxE concepts. In the education conditions, participants watched a video introducing GxE concepts then one of four narrative vignettes depicting how a character's experience with eating hyperpalatable or bitter tasting food (reward-based eating drive vs. bitter taste perception scenario) is influenced by genetic or environmental variations (genetic vs. environmental framings). The education intervention increased GxE knowledge, genetic causal attributions, and empathetic concern. Mediation analyses suggest that causal attributions, particularly to genetics and willpower, are key factors that drive downstream stigma and eating behavior outcomes and could be targeted in future interventions. Tailoring GxE education frames to individual traits may lead to more meaningful outcomes. For example, genetic (vs. environmental) framed GxE education may reduce stigma toward individuals with certain eating tendencies among individuals without such tendencies. GxE education interventions would be most likely to achieve desired outcomes such as reducing stigma if they target certain causal beliefs and are strategically tailored to individual attributes.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to explore the predictive value of free triiodothyronine to free thyroxine ratio (FT3/FT4) on contrast-associated acute kidney injury (CA-AKI) and poor prognosis in euthyroid patients after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). METHODS: The present study included 3,116 euthyroid patients who underwent elective PCI. The main outcome was CA-AKI, and the secondary outcome was long-term mortality. All patients were divided into three groups according to the tertiles of FT3/FT4 levels. RESULTS: During hospitalization, a total of 160 cases (5.1%) of CA-AKI occurred. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis indicated a linear and negative relationship between FT3/FT4 and CA-AKI risk (P for nonlinearity = 0.2621). Besides, the fully-adjusted logistic regression model revealed that patients in tertile 3 (low FT3/FT4 group) had 1.82 times [odds ratio (OR): 1.82, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.13-3.02, P = 0.016] as high as the risk of CA-AKI than those in tertile 1 (high FT3/FT4 group). Similarly, patients in tertile 3 were observed to have a higher incidence of long-term mortality [fully-adjusted hazard ratio (HR): 1.58, 95% CI: 1.07-2.32, P = 0.021]. Similarly, the Kaplan-Meier curves displayed significant differences in long-term mortality among the three groups (log-rank test, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: In euthyroid patients undergoing elective PCI, low levels of FT3/FT4 were independently associated with an increased risk of CA-AKI and long-term mortality. Routine evaluation of FT3/FT4 may aid in risk stratification and guide treatment decisions within this particular patient group.

BACKGROUND: The systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI), served as a novel inflammatory biomarker, is the synthesis of neutrophils, monocytes and lymphocytes. AIMS: We hypothesized that SIRI has predictive value for contrast-associated acute kidney injury (CA-AKI) and long-term mortality in patients undergoing elective percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). METHODS: We retrospectively observed 5685 patients undergoing elective PCI from January 2012 to December 2018. Venous blood samples were collected to obtain the experimental data on the day of admission or the morning of the next day. SIRI = neutrophil count × monocyte count/lymphocyte count. CA-AKI was defined as an increase of 50% or 0.3 mg/dl in SCr from baseline within 48 h after contrast exposure. RESULTS: The incidence of CA-AKI was 6.1% (n = 352). The best cutoff value of SIRI for predicting CA-AKI was 1.39, with a sensitivity of 52.3% and a specificity of 67.3%. [AUC: 0.620, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.590-0.651, p < 0.001]. After adjusting for potential confounders, multivariate analysis showed that the high SIRI group (SIRI > 1.39) was a strong independent predictor of CA-AKI in patients undergoing elective PCI compared with the low SIRI group (SIRI ≤ 1.39) (odds ratio = 1.642, 95% CI: 1.274-2.116, p < 0.001). Additionally, COX regression analysis showed that SIRI > 1.39 was significantly associated with long-term mortality at a median follow-up of 2.8 years. [Hazard ratio (HR)=1.448, 95%CI: 1.188-1.765; p < 0.001]. Besides, Kaplan-Meier survival curve also indicated that the cumulative rate of mortality was considerably higher in the high SIRI group. CONCLUSIONS: High levels of SIRI are independent predictors of CA-AKI and long-term mortality in patients undergoing elective PCI.

Social norms can be studied at both the individual and societal levels. While the influence of individual perceived norms on health behaviors has been well-documented, the role of societal-level factors in social normative influence remains unclear. We adopted a multilevel approach to investigate the impact of individual-level perceived norms, country-level collective norms, and individualistic culture on mask-wearing behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic. A secondary analysis of cross-sectional data collected from 23 countries (N = 450,223) was conducted. The findings reveal that perceived descriptive norms, perceived injunctive norms, and collective norms conjointly influenced mask-wearing behavior. Positive relationships between perceived descriptive and injunctive norms and mask wearing were stronger in countries with a higher collective norm. Furthermore, positive relationships between norms (i.e., perceived descriptive norms, perceived injunctive norms, and collective norms) and mask wearing were stronger in countries with a more individualistic culture. The study provides evidence for theorizing social normative influence beyond the individual level and underscores the importance of incorporating multilevel factors in social norm research.

Purpose: The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) based on creatinine is crucial for the risk assessment of contrast-associated acute kidney injury (CA-AKI). In recent, the difference between cystatin C-based eGFR (eGFRcys) and creatinine-based eGFR (eGFRcr) has been widely documented. We aimed to explore whether intraindividual differences between eGFRcys and eGFRcr had potential value for CA-AKI risk assessment in patients undergoing elective percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Patients and Methods: From January 2012 to December 2018, we retrospectively observed 5049 patients receiving elective PCI. To determine eGFR, serum creatinine and cystatin C levels were measured. CA-AKI was defined as serum creatinine being increased ≥ 50% or 0.3 mg/dL within 48 h after contrast agents exposure. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) was defined as the eGFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2. Results: Approximately half of the participants (2479, 49.1%) had a baseline eGFRdiff (eGFRcys-eGFRcr) between -15 and 15 mL/min/1.73 m2. Restricted cubic splines analysis revealed a nonlinear relationship between eGFRdiff and CA-AKI. Multivariable logistic regression analysis indicated that compared with the reference group (-15 to 15 mL/min/1.73 m2), the negative-eGFRdiff group (less than -15 mL/min/1.73 m2) had a higher risk of CA-AKI (OR, 3.44; 95% CI, 2.57-4.64). Furthermore, patients were divided into four groups based on CKD identified by eGFRcys or eGFRcr. Multivariable logistic analysis revealed that patients with either CKDcys (OR, 2.94; 95% CI, 2.19-3.95, P < 0.001) or CKDcr (OR, 2.44; 95% CI, 1.19-4.63, P < 0.001) had an elevated risk of CA-AKI compared to those without CKDcys and CKDcr. Conclusion: There are frequent intraindividual differences between eGFRcys and eGFRcr, and these differences can be used to forecast the risk of CA-AKI.

PURPOSE: Inflammation is commonly considered a mechanism underlying contrast-associated acute kidney injury (CA-AKI). This study aimed to explore the predictive capability of the novel inflammatory marker lactate dehydrogenase-to-albumin ratio (LAR) for CA-AKI following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), and further compare it with other common inflammatory biomarkers. METHODS: This study enrolled 5,435 patients undergoing elective PCI. The primary outcome was CA-AKI, and the secondary outcome was all-cause mortality. All patients were grouped into three groups based on the LAR tertiles. RESULTS: Three hundred fifteen patients (5.8%) experienced CA-AKI during hospitalization. The fully adjusted logistic regression suggested a significant increase in the risk of CA-AKI in LAR Tertile 3 (odds ratio [OR]: 2.51, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.68-3.83, p < .001) and Tertile 2 (OR: 2.11, 95% CI: 1.42-3.20, p < .001) compared to Tertile 1. Additionally, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis demonstrated that LAR exhibited significantly superior predictive capability for CA-AKI compared to other inflammatory biomarkers. Regarding the secondary outcome, multivariate COX regression analysis showed a positive correlation between elevated LAR levels and all-cause mortality. CONCLUSION: In patients undergoing elective PCI, LAR was significantly independently associated with CA-AKI, and it stood out as the optimal inflammatory biomarker for predicting CA-AKI.

BACKGROUND: Scleral extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling plays a crucial role in the development of myopia, particularly in ocular axial elongation. Thrombospondin-1 (THBS1), also known as TSP-1, is a significant cellular protein involved in matrix remodeling in various tissues. However, the specific role of THBS1 in myopia development remains unclear. METHOD: We employed the HumanNet database to predict genes related to myopic sclera remodeling, followed by screening and visualization of the predicted genes using bioinformatics tools. To investigate the potential target gene Thbs1, we utilized lens-induced myopia models in male C57BL/6J mice and performed Western blot analysis to detect the expression level of scleral THBS1 during myopia development. Additionally, we evaluated the effects of scleral THBS1 knockdown on myopia development through AAV sub-Tenon's injection. The refractive status and axial length were measured using a refractometer and SD-OCT system. RESULTS: During lens-induced myopia, THBS1 protein expression in the sclera was downregulated, particularly in the early stages of myopia induction. Moreover, the mice in the THBS1 knockdown group exhibited alterations in myopia development in both refraction and axial length changed compared to the control group. Western blotting analysis confirmed the effectiveness of AAV-mediated knockdown, demonstrating a decrease in COLA1 expression and an increase in MMP9 levels in the sclera. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that sclera THBS1 levels decreased during myopia development and subsequent THBS1 knockdown showed a decrease in scleral COLA1 expression. Taken together, these results suggest that THBS1 plays a role in maintaining the homeostasis of scleral extracellular matrix, and the reduction of THBS1 may promote the remodeling process and then affect ocular axial elongation during myopia progression.

The albumin-bilirubin (ALBI) score is considered an effective and convenient scoring system for assessing liver function. We hypothesized that the ALBI score was predictive of contrast-associated acute kidney injury (CA-AKI) and long-term mortality in patients undergoing elective percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). We retrospectively observed 5629 patients undergoing elective PCI. Contrast-associated acute kidney injury is defined as a 50% or 0.3 mg/dl increase in baseline serum creatinine levels within 48 h of contrast exposure. The incidence of CA-AKI was 6.2% (n = 350). After adjusting for potential confounding factors, multivariate analysis showed that the ALBI score was an independent predictor of CA-AKI (P = .002). A restricted cubic spline analysis confirmed approximately linear relationships between the ALBI score and risks of CA-AKI. Furthermore, at a median follow-up of 2.8 years, multivariate Cox regression analysis indicated that the ALBI score was an independent risk factor for long-term mortality (P < .001). The ALBI score was closely related to the occurrence of CA-AKI and long-term mortality in patients who underwent elective PCI. This score might be useful for risk stratification in high-risk patient groups to predict CA-AKI.

Studies have revealed neurotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, and developmental and reproductive toxicity in mice exposed to aluminum. However, relatively few studies have been conducted to clarify the mechanism underlying the impact of embryonic exposure to aluminum on the development of the male reproductive system in offspring. Pregnant mice were administered aluminum chloride (AlCl3) by gavage from day 12.5 of gestation until birth. Our findings demonstrated that embryonic exposure to AlCl3 disrupted testicular development and spermatogenesis by impairing testicular architecture, reducing sperm count, and upregulating the expression of tight junction (TJ) protein between Sertoli cells (SCs). Further in vitro studies revealed that treatment with AlCl3 stabilized TJ proteins Occludin and ZO-1 expression by inhibiting ERK signaling pathway activation, thereby upregulating Slc25a5 expression which induced ATP production leading to disruption of cytoskeletal protein homeostasis. Therefore, the study provided a new mechanistic insight into how AlCl3 exposure interfered with testicular development and spermatogenesis while suggesting that Slc25a5 might be a target affected by AlCl3 influencing cell metabolism.

BACKGROUND: High density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) is considered as "good cholesterol". Recent evidence suggests that a high HDL-C level may increase the risk of poor outcomes in some populations. PURPOSE: To investigate the association between HDL-C levels and poor outcomes in patients after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). METHODS: Patients undergoing PCI during January 2012 and December 2018 were consecutively recruited and divided into three groups with different HDL-C levels: HDL-C ≤ 25 mg/dL, 25 < HDL-C ≤ 60 mg/dL, HDL-C > 60 mg/dL by the restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis and assessed for all-cause mortality (ACM). The association between HDL-C levels and poor outcomes was assessed by multivariable cox regression analysis. RESULTS: The patients were followed with a median duration of 4 years. Of the 7284 participants, 727 all-cause deaths and 334 cardiovascular deaths occurred. A V-shaped association of HDL-C with the prognosis was observed, patients with either excessively low or high HDL-C levels reporting a higher risk than those with midrange values. After adjustment for confounding factors, the former exhibited a higher cumulative rate of ACM and cardiovascular mortality (CM) than the latter [low HDL-C: for ACM, hazard ratio (HR), 1.96; 95%CI, 1.41, 2.73, P < 0.001; for CM, HR, 1.66; 95%CI, 1.03, 2.67; P = 0.037; high HDL-C: for ACM, HR, 1.73; 95%CI, 1.29, 2.32, P < 0.001; for CM, HR, 1.73; 95%CI, 1.16, 2.58; P = 0.007]. CONCLUSION: HDL-C levels display a V-shaped association with poor outcomes in patients after PCI, with excessively high or low HDL-C suggesting a higher mortality risk. An optimal HDL-C level may fall in the range of 25-60 mg/dL.

The neutrophil-to-platelet ratio (NPR) is considered to be an indicator of inflammatory status. The value of the NPR in predicting in-hospital adverse events (AEs) and long-term prognosis after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in coronary artery disease (CAD) patients has not yet been reported. Meanwhile, the mechanisms behind its predictive value for long-term prognosis remain unreported as well. The study retrospectively enrolled 7284 consecutive patients with CAD undergoing PCI from January 2012 to December 2018. Multivariable logistic regression analysis, multivariable Cox regression analysis, KaplanâMeier (KM) curve analysis, restricted cubic spline (RCS) curve analysis, and sensitivity analysis were used in the study. All-cause death was the endpoint of the study. According to the median value of the NPR, the patients were divided into two groups: the high group (NPR ≥ 0.02, n = 3736) and the low group (NPR < 0.02, n = 3548). Multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that a high NPR was a risk factor for in-hospital AEs [odds ratio (OR) = 1.602, 95% CI 1.347-1.909, p = 0.001]. During a mean follow-up period of 3.01 ± 1.49 years, the multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that a high NPR affected the long-term prognosis of patients (HR 1.22, 95% CI 1.03-1.45, p = 0.025) and cardiac death (HR 1.49, 95% CI 1.14-1.95, p = 0.003). The subgroup analysis showed that the NPR was affected by age and sex. The mediation analysis identified that the effect of the NPR on long-term outcomes is partially mediated by serum creatinine (Scr) and triglycerides. The NPR may be a convenient indicator of in-hospital AEs and poor long-term and cardiac outcomes in CAD patients. It might have impacted prognosis through effects on kidney function and lipid metabolism.

BACKGROUND: The link between malnutrition and poor prognosis in cardiovascular disease has been established but the association between malnutrition and contrast-associated acute kidney injury (CA-AKI), a common complication of coronary procedures, remains poorly understood. In this study we investigated the predictive value of 3 nutritional indexes for CA-AKI in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).MethodsâandâResults: The study included a total of 6,049 consecutive patients undergoing PCI between May 2012 and September 2020, among whom 352 (5.8%) developed CA-AKI. We used the Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score, the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI), and the Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI) to assess the association between malnutrition risk and CA-AKI after PCI. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that malnutrition, as identified by GNRI and PNI, was significantly associated with a higher risk of CA-AKI (moderate-severe malnutrition in GNRI: odds ratio [OR]=1.92, [95% confidence interval (CI), 1.27-2.85]; malnutrition in PNI: OR=1.87, [95% CI, 1.39-2.50]), whereas the CONUT score did not demonstrate a significant difference (P>0.05). Furthermore, GNRI (∆AUC=0.115, P<0.001) and PNI (∆AUC=0.101, P<0.001) exhibited superior predictive ability than the CONUT score for CA-AKI and significantly improved reclassification and discrimination in the fully adjusted model. CONCLUSIONS: Malnutrition, especially identified by the GNRI and PNI, was associated with a higher risk of CA-AKI after PCI. GNRI and PNI performed better than the CONUT score in predicting CA-AKI.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have indicated a strong correlation between endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and myopia and that eyedrops containing the ER stress inducer tunicamycin (Tm) can induce myopic changes in C57BL/6 J mice. Therefore, this study aimed to create a new myopia model using Tm eyedrops and to explore the mechanism of ER stress-mediated myopia development. METHODS: Three-week-old C57BL/6 J mice were treated with different concentrations (0, 25, 50, and 100 µg/mL) and/or number of applications (zero, one, three, and seven) of Tm eyedrops. Refraction and axial length (AL) were measured before and one week after Tm treatment. Scleral collagen alterations were evaluated under polarised light after picrosirius red staining. ER stress-related indicators, such as the expression of collagen I and cleaved collagen were detected using Western blotting. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, mice administered eyedrops with 50 µg/mL Tm only once showed the greatest myopic shifts in refraction and AL elongation and reduced scleral expression of collagen I. Picrosirius red staining showed a lower percentage of bundled collagen in the Tm group. Expression of ER-stress indicators increased in the Tm groups. Furthermore, optimised administration of Tm induced matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP2) expression in the sclera, which plays a major role in collagen degradation. CONCLUSIONS: We have demonstrated that ER stress in the sclera is involved in myopia progression. Tm eyedrops induced myopic changes, loosening of the scleral collagen and decreased expression of collagen I. This process may be associated with ER stress in the sclera, which upregulates the expression of MMP2 leading to collagen degradation.

We implement a rare-event sampling scheme for quantifying the rate of thermally activated nonadiabatic transitions in the condensed phase. Our Quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) methodology uses the recently developed Interface for NonAdiabatic QM/MM in Solvent (INAQS) package to interface an elementary electronic structure package and a popular open-source molecular dynamics software (GROMACS) to simulate an electron transfer event between two stationary ions in a solution of acetonitrile solvent molecules. Nonadiabatic effects are implemented through a surface hopping scheme, and our simulations allow further quantitative insight into the participation ratio of a solvent and the effect of ion separation distance as far as facilitating electron transfer. We also demonstrate that the standard gas-phase approaches for treating frustrated hops and velocity reversal must be refined when working in the condensed phase with many degrees of freedom. The code and methodology developed here can be easily expanded upon and modified to incorporate other systems and should provide a great deal of new insight into a wide variety of condensed phase nonadiabatic phenomena.
