RESUMO

Classically, a single renal artery supplies, and a single renal vein drains each kidney. The morphology and variations in the renal vascular structures are of great importance when performing any type of renal surgery. The present case describes a rare combination of renal vasculature variation in a formalin-fixed, Chinese male cadaver. In this case, the left kidney is drained by a main renal vein (MRV) and an inferior renal vein (IRV), the latter might be the remnant of the left dorsal renal vein during the embryonic period. Two sets of renal arteries are present in this case, possibly due to persistent mesonephric arteries during embryonic development. Describing such anatomical variations is not only of academic interest but also important to help radiologists with the correct interpretation of image examinations and for surgeons to be prepared in advance.

RESUMO

Coherent optics has profoundly impacted diverse applications ranging from communications, LiDAR to quantum computations. However, developing coherent systems in integrated photonics comes at great expense in hardware integration and energy efficiency. Here we demonstrate a high-coherence parallelization strategy for advanced integrated coherent systems at minimal cost. By using a self-injection locked microcomb to injection lock distributed feedback lasers, we achieve a record high on-chip gain of 60 dB with no degradation in coherence. This strategy enables highly coherent channels with linewidths down to 10 Hz and power over 20 dBm. The overall electrical-to-optical efficiency reaches 19%, comparable to that of advanced semiconductor lasers. This method supports a silicon photonic communication link with an unprecedented data rate beyond 60 Tbit/s and reduces phase-related DSP consumption by 99.99999% compared to traditional III-V laser pump schemes. This work paves the way for realizing scalable, high-performance coherent integrated photonic systems, potentially benefiting numerous applications.

RESUMO

Asthma is a complex inflammatory airway disease that arises from the interplay between genetic predisposition and environmental influences. Leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2), a gene commonly associated with Parkinson's disease, has recently gained attention for its role in immune regulation and inflammation beyond the brain. However, its involvement in asthma has not yet been reported. In this study, we used LRRK2 G2019S transgenic mice and LRRK2 knockout mice to establish asthmatic models to explore LRRK2 impact on asthma. We found that LRRK2 G2019S transgenic mice showed exacerbated airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) and airway inflammation in asthma mouse models induced by house dust mite. RNA sequencing data unveiled that the LRRK2 G2019S mutation enhanced immune response pathways, including NOD-like receptor, cellular response to interferon ß and activation of innate immune response signaling. Conversely, LRRK2 deficiency attenuated AHR and airway inflammation in the same asthma models. Our study offers new insights into the role of LRRK2 in allergic inflammation and highlights its potential as a therapeutic target for asthma.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Circular RNAs (circRNAs) have been shown to be involved in tumorigenesis and progression. However, the role of circGLIS3 (hsa_circ_0002874) in prostate cancer (PCa) has yet not been reported. METHODS: Candidate circRNA were determined through comprehensive analysis of public datasets, PCa cell lines, and tissues data. A series of cellular functional assays, including CCK-8, colony formation, wound healing, and transwell assays were performed. Subsequently, RNA sequencing, RNA immunoprecipitation, methylated RNA immunoprecipitation, microRNA pulldown, luciferase reporter assay, and western blot were used to explore the underlying molecular mechanisms. Moreover, the xenograft tumor mouse model was established to elucidate the function of circGLIS3. RESULTS: CircGLIS3, derived from exon 2 of the parental GLIS3 gene, was identified as a novel oncogenic circRNA in PCa that was closely associated with the biochemical recurrence. Its expression levels were upregulated in PCa tissues and cell lines as well as enzalutamide high-resistant cells. The cellular functional assays revealed that circGLIS3 promoted PCa cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. METTL3-mediated N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification maintained its upregulation by enhancing its stability. Mechanically, CircGLIS3 sponged miR-661 to upregulate MDM2, thus regulating the p53 signaling pathway to promote cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. Furthermore, in vitro and in vivo experiments, the knockdown of circGLIS3 improved the response of PCa cells to ARSI therapies such as enzalutamide. CONCLUSIONS: METTL3-mediated m6A modification of circGLIS3 regulates the p53 signaling pathway via the miR-661/MDM2 axis, thereby facilitating PCa progression. Meanwhile, this study unveils a promising potential target for ARSI therapy for PCa.

RESUMO

Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) typically forms biofilms in vivo, which exhibit high resistance and complicate eradication efforts. Additionally, persistent inflammation and excessive oxidative stress can lead to severe lung dysfunction, facilitating bacterial colonization and infection. Herein, we prepared oil-in-water (O/W) nanoemulsions (TD-αT NEs) by using PEG5k-block-PCL5k and α-tocopherol to encapsulate tobramycin (TOB). To enhance TOB's drug load, a hydrophobic ion pair (TDIP) composed of TOB and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) was pre-prepared. TD-αT NEs was not only easily prepared and aerosolized, but stable in both physics and chemistry. The negatively charged TD-αT NEs facilitated penetration through mucus, reaching infection sites. Subsequently, TD-αT NEs permeated biofilms due to their small size and released drugs via lipase-triggered carrier dissociation, aiding in eradicating internal bacteria within biofilms (with a 16-fold reduction in CFU vs. free TOB group). TD-αT NEs simultaneously exerted superior anti-inflammatory effects, reducing levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (NO, IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α) while increasing the level of anti-inflammatory cytokine (IL-10). It was achieved through the upregulation of PPAR-γ and downregulation of NF-κB signaling, thus mitigating the lung damage. In addition, TD-αT NEs demonstrated strong antioxidant activity, alleviating the oxidative stress induced by P. aeruginosa. Notably, when administered via inhalation, TD-αT NEs significantly reduced the lung bacterial burden, lung inflammation, and oxidative stress in vivo compared to TOB solution. TD-αT NEs could prove beneficial in treating chronic pulmonary infections induced by P. aeruginosa through a comprehensive strategy, specifically enhancing biofilm eradication, reducing inflammation, and alleviating oxidative stress.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Thoracic aortic aneurysm/dissection (TAAD) and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) are serious autosomal-dominant diseases affecting the cardiovascular system. They are mainly caused by variants in the MYH11 gene, which encodes the heavy chain of myosin 11. The aim of this study was to evaluate the genotype-phenotype correlation of MYH11 from a distinctive perspective based on a pair of monozygotic twins. METHODS: The detailed phenotypic characteristics of the monozygotic twins from the early fetal stage to the infancy stage were traced and compared with each other and with those of previously documented cases. Whole-exome and Sanger sequencing techniques were used to identify and validate the candidate variants, facilitating the analysis of the genotype-phenotype correlation of MYH11. RESULTS: The monozygotic twins were premature and presented with PDA, pulmonary hypoplasia, and pulmonary hypertension. The proband developed heart and brain abnormalities during the fetal stage and died at 18 days after birth, whereas his sibling was discharged after being cured and developed normally post follow-up. A novel variant c.766 A > G p. (Ile256Val) in MYH11 (NM_002474.2) was identified in the monozygotic twins and classified as a likely pathogenic variant according to the American College of Medical Genetics/Association for Molecular Pathology guidelines. Reviewing the reported cases (n = 102) showed that the penetrance of MYH11 was 82.35%, and the most common feature was TAAD (41.18%), followed by PDA (22.55%), compound TAAD and PDA (9.80%), and other vascular abnormalities (8.82%). The constituent ratios of null variants among the cases with TAAD (8.60%), PDA (43.8%), or compound TAAD and PDA (28.6%) were significantly different (P = 0.01). Further pairwise comparison of the ratios among these groups showed that there were significant differences between the TAAD and PDA groups (P = 0.006). CONCLUSION: This study expands the mutational spectrum of MYH11 and provides new insights into the genotype-phenotype correlation of MYH11 based on the monozygotic twins with variable clinical features and outcomes, indicating that cryptic modifiers and complex mechanisms beside the genetic variants may be involved in the condition.

RESUMO

In recent years, climate change has increasingly become one of the major challenges facing mankind today, seriously threatening the survival and sustainable development of mankind. Dramatically increasing carbon dioxide concentrations are thought to cause a severe greenhouse effect, leading to severe and sustained global warming, associated climate instability and unwelcome natural disasters, melting glaciers and extreme weather patterns. The treatment of flue gas from thermal power plants uses carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology, one of the most promising current methods to accomplish significant CO2 emission reduction. In order to implement the technological and financial system of CO2 capture, which is the key technology of CCUS technology and accounts for 70-80% of the overall cost of CCUS technology, it is crucial to create more effective adsorbents. Nowadays, with the development and application of various carbon dioxide capture materials, it is necessary to review and summarize carbon dioxide capture materials in time. In this paper, the main technologies of CO2 capture are reviewed, with emphasis on the latest research status of CO2 capture materials, such as amines, zeolites, alkali metals, as well as emerging MOFs and carbon nanomaterials. More and more research on CO2 capture materials has used a variety of improved methods, which have achieved high CO2 capture performance. For example, doping of layered double hydroxides (LDH) with metal atoms significantly increases the active site on the surface of the material, which has a significant impact on improving the CO2 capture capacity and performance stability of LDH. Although many carbon capture materials have been developed, high cost and low technology scale remain major obstacles to CO2 capture. Future research should focus on designing low-cost, high-availability carbon capture materials.

RESUMO

Introduction: The aim of the study was to study the role of nanobacteria in the formation of renal calculi and the underlying mechanism. Material and methods: A total of 90 clean Wistar male rats were randomly divided into a negative control group, an experimental group, and an interference group. From the end of the first week of modelling, 10 consecutive times once a week, 3 rats in each group were randomly selected to measure the biochemical blood markers and urine metabolism. After sacrifice, the formation of kidney stones was assessed by observing the ultrastructure of the kidney by electron microscopy and pathohistology. Finally, the expression of calcium-sensitive receptor (CaSR) and claudin-14 protein in the kidney tissue was examined by western blotting. Results: Compared with the control group, the gross structure of the kidney was changed in the model group. At the fourth week of modelling, the rats in the nanobacteria group had significantly enlarged kidneys and increased kidney-to-body ratio, and the difference had statistical significance (p < 0.05). The colour of the kidney profile was dark, the structure of the skin pulp was less clear, and the accumulation of yellowish particles was observed at the junction of the cortical pulp. The creatinine, uric acid, urea nitrogen, and urinary calcium of the rats in the nanobacteria group began to increase at the third week, and the difference between the third and eighth week had statistical significance (p < 0.05). However, the difference between the 3 groups had no statistical significance after the eighth week. At the fourth week, we observed the formation of calculi, which were mainly distributed in the renal tubules and surrounding tissues. The kidney stone formation rate was 52.4% in the nanobacteria group and 27.8% in the interference group, and the difference had statistical significance (p < 0.05). Ultrastructure observations revealed that from the fourth week, the renal tissues in the nanobacteria group showed expanded renal tubules, swollen renal tubular epithelium, granular degeneration, shedding and lymphocyte infiltration of renal tubular epithelial cells, and a small amount of calcium salt crystals in renal tubules. At the third week, the expression of CaSR and Claudin-14 protein in the nanobacteria group increased, and the difference had statistical significance (p < 0.05). The expression of CaSR and Claudin-14 was positively correlated with urinary calcium (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The formation of renal calculi began in the fourth week after the model was established, and the crystals were mostly located in the renal tubules. During the formation of renal calculi, the renal tubular epithelial cells were damaged, showing granular degeneration and small amounts of calcium salt crystals, accompanied by a few renal tubules beginning to expand and epithelial swelling, granular degeneration, necrosis and shedding of renal tubular epithelial cells, lymphocyte infiltration in the renal interstitium, and small amounts of calcium salt crystals in the renal tubules, which aggravated with time. The serum creatinine, serum uric acid, urea nitrogen, and urinary calcium levels increased with time from the third week and returned to normal after the eighth week. The expression of CaSR and Claudin-14 protein was upregulated and positively correlated with the 24-h urinary calcium excretion value.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: LanGui tea, a traditional Chinese medicine formulation comprising of Gynostemma pentaphyllum (Thunb.) Makino, Cinnamomum cassia (L.) J. Presl, and Ampelopsis grossedentata (Hand-Mazz) W.T. Wang, has yet to have its potential contributions to alcoholic liver disease (ALD) fully elucidated. Consequently, the objective of this research is to investigate the protective properties of LanGui tea against binge alcohol-induced ALD and the mechanisms underlying its effects. METHODS: An experimental model of acute alcohol-induced liver disease was performed to assess the protective effects of extract of LanGui tea (ELG) at both 50 and 100 mg.kg-1 dosages on male C57BL/6 mice. Various parameters, including hepatic histological changes, inflammation, lipids content, as well as liver enzymes and interleukin 1ß (IL-1ß) in the serum were measured. The pharmacological mechanisms of ELG, specifically its effects on adenosine monophosphate-(AMP)-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and NLR family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) signaling, were investigated through Western blotting, qRT-PCR, ELISA, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence analyses, and by blocking the AMPK activity. RESULTS: ELG demonstrated a mitigating effect on fatty liver, inflammation, and hepatic dysfunction within the mouse model. This effect was achieved by activating AMPK signaling and inhibitingNLRP3 signaling in the liver, causing a reduction in IL-1ß generation. In vitro studies further confirmed that ELG inhibited cell damage and IL-1ß production in ethanol-induced hepatocytes by enhancing AMPK-NLRP3 signaling. Conversely, the pharmacological inhibition of AMPK activity nearly abrogated such alteration. CONCLUSIONS: Thus, LanGui tea emerges as a promising herbal therapy for ALD management involving AMPK-NLRP3 signaling.

RESUMO

Collective cell migration is integral to many developmental and disease processes. Previously, we discovered that protein phosphatase 1 (Pp1) promotes border cell collective migration in the Drosophila ovary. We now report that the Pp1 phosphatase regulatory subunit dPPP1R15 is a critical regulator of border cell migration. dPPP1R15 is an ortholog of mammalian PPP1R15 proteins that attenuate the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response. We show that, in collectively migrating border cells, dPPP1R15 phosphatase restrains an active physiological protein kinase R-like ER kinase- (PERK)-eIF2α-activating transcription factor 4 (ATF4) stress pathway. RNAi knockdown of dPPP1R15 blocks border cell delamination from the epithelium and subsequent migration, increases eIF2α phosphorylation, reduces translation, and drives expression of the stress response transcription factor ATF4. We observe similar defects upon overexpression of ATF4 or the eIF2α kinase PERK. Furthermore, we show that normal border cells express markers of the PERK-dependent ER stress response and require PERK and ATF4 for efficient migration. In many other cell types, unresolved ER stress induces initiation of apoptosis. In contrast, border cells with chronic RNAi knockdown of dPPP1R15 survive. Together, our results demonstrate that the PERK-eIF2α-ATF4 pathway, regulated by dPPP1R15 activity, counteracts the physiological ER stress that occurs during collective border cell migration. We propose that in vivo collective cell migration is intrinsically "stressful," requiring tight homeostatic control of the ER stress response for collective cell cohesion, dynamics, and movement.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical features and genetic etiology for a child with developmental delay, impaired growth, facial dysmorphism, and axonal neuropathy (DIGFAN). METHODS: A child who was admitted to the Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University on March 22, 2021 was selected the study subject. Clinical data of the child was collected. Following extraction of genomic DNA, the child and his parents were subjected to whole exome sequencing (WES), and candidate variant was verified by Sanger sequencing and bioinformatic analysis. RESULTS: The child, a 10-year-and-9-month-old boy, had manifested with short stature, intellectual disability, delayed speech, motor and language development, and facial dysmorphism. WES and Sanger sequencing revealed that he has harbored a novel de novo c.800T>C (p.Leu267Pro) variant of the MORC2 gene. The Leucine at position 267, which is highly conserved among various species, is located in the S5 domain of ribosome protein in the ATPase binding region of MORC2. And the Leu267Pro may affect the function of MORC2 by altering the spatial conformation and activity of ATPase. Based on the guidelines from the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics, the c.800T>C variant was classified as likely pathogenic (PS2+PM2_Supporting+PP2+PP3). CONCLUSION: The MORC2: c.800T>C (p.Leu267Pro) variant probably underlay the pathogenesis of DIGFAN syndrome in this child.

RESUMO

In the endoscopic images of bladder, accurate segmentation of different grade bladder tumor from blurred boundary regions and highly variable shapes is of great significance for doctors' diagnosis and patients' later treatment. We propose a nested attentional feature fusion segmentation network (NAFF-Net) based on the encoder-decoder structure formed by the combination of weighted pyramid pooling module (WPPM) and nested attentional feature fusion (NAFF). Among them, WPPM applies the cascade of atrous convolution to enhance the overall perceptual field while introducing adaptive weights to optimize multi-scale feature extraction, NAFF integrates deep semantic information into shallow feature maps, effectively focusing on edge and detail information in bladder tumor images. Additionally, a weighted mixed loss function is constructed to alleviate the impact of imbalance between positive and negative sample distribution on segmentation accuracy. Experiments illustrate the proposed NAFF-Net achieves better segmentation results compared to other mainstream models, with a MIoU of 84.05%, MPrecision of 91.52%, MRecall of 90.81%, and F1-score of 91.16%, and also achieves good results on the public datasets Kvasir-SEG and CVC-ClinicDB. Compared to other models, NAFF-Net has a smaller number of parameters, which is a significant advantage in model deployment.

RESUMO

Salinity is among the most critical factors limiting the growth and species distribution of coastal plants. Water salinity in estuarine ecosystems varies temporally and spatially, but the variation patterns across different time scales and salinity fluctuation have rarely been quantified. The effects of salinity on floristic diversity in mangroves are not fully understood due to the temporal and spatial heterogeneity of salinity. In this study, we monitored water salinity at an interval of 10-min over one year in three mangrove catchment areas representing the outer part, middle part, and inner part respectively of Dongzhai Bay, Hainan, China. The number of mangrove community types and dominant mangrove species of the three catchment areas were also investigated. We found that the diurnal variation and dry-season intra-month variation in water salinity were driven by tidal cycles. The seasonal variation in water salinity was mainly driven by rainfall with higher salinity occurring in the dry season and lower salinity occurring in the wet season. Spatially, water salinity was highest at the outer part, intermediate at the middle part, and lowest at the inner part of the bay. The intra-month and annual fluctuations of water salinity were highest at the middle part and lowest at the outer part of the bay. The number of mangrove community types and dominant species were lowest at the outer part, intermediate at the middle part, and highest at the inner part of the bay. These results suggest that the temporal variation of water salinity in mangroves is driven by different factors at different time scales and therefore it is necessary to measure water salinity at different time scales to get a complete picture of the saline environment that mangroves experience. Spatially, lower salinity levels benefit mangrove species richness within a bay landscape, however, further research is needed to distinguish the effects of salinity fluctuation and salinity level in affecting mangrove species richness.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To compare the efficiency and safety of a novel flexible ureteral access sheath (f-UAS) and traditional ureteral access sheath (UAS) during retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between January 2022 and September 2022, a total of 152 consecutive cases with renal stones underwent RIRS with the f-UAS. Their outcomes were compared with those of another 152 consecutive cases undergoing RIRS with traditional UAS using a 1:1 scenario matched-pair analysis, with matching parameters including age and stone size. The f-UAS is a novel UAS with a 10-cm-long tube at the tip that can follow the bends of flexible ureteroscope (f-URS). RESULTS: Baseline characteristics were found to be similar between the two groups. The f-UAS group demonstrated significantly higher SFR (76.3% vs. 7.2%; P < 0.001) at 1 day postoperatively and a higher clearance rate of stone volume (98.11% vs. 91.78%; P < 0.001). The f-UAS group also had lower total complications rate (9.9% vs. 22.4%; P = 0.003), lower incidence of fever (5.9% vs 11.9%; P = 0.001), shorter operative times (56.5 min vs. 59.9 min; P = 0.047), and lower usage rate of baskets (17.1% vs. 100%; P < 0.001). There was no significant difference in SFR at 1 month postoperatively (P = 0.627) and in the length of postoperative hospital stay between the two groups (P = 0.225). CONCLUSION: Compared to the traditional UAS during RIRS, the f-UAS showed several advantages, including higher SFR at 1 day postoperatively, shorter operative times, lower incidence of complications, and less use of basket.

RESUMO

Norovirus (NoV) is a common pathogen that can cause infectious diarrhea. This study aimed to determine the prevalence, clinical features, and genotypes of NoV-associated diarrhea in Wuxi, China. A total of 4,416 stool samples were collected from patients with diarrhea at enteric disease clinics of sentinel hospitals in Wuxi from February 1, 2013 to December 31, 2020. Univariate and Akaike information criterion stepwise logistic regression were used to identify differences as integrated within a clinical setting (NoV positive [+] versus NoV negative [-], NoV+ versus rotavirus [RV]+, NoV+ versus bacteria+, genogroup [G] I and GII genotypes). Norovirus was detected in 9.85% of stool samples, which was greater than other tested pathogens. Excluding coinfection of NoV and other viruses or bacteria, patients infected with NoV had a lower chance of acquiring the virus in summer (P < 0.001; odds ratio [OR], 0.257; 95% CI, 0.189-0.36) when compared with patients without NoV. Patients with diarrhea infected with NoV featured nausea and vomiting (P < 0.001; OR, 2.297, 95% CI, 1.85-2.86) and loose stools (P = 0.006; OR, 2.247; 95% CI, 1.30-4.10), but less abdominal cramping (P = 0.001; OR, 0.676; 95% CI, 0.54-0.84). Patients infected with RV (P < 0.001; OR, 0.413; 95% CI, 0.25-0.68) or bacteria (P < 0.001; OR, 0.422; 95% CI, 0.26-0.67) were more vulnerable to fever than those infected with NoV. A total of 379 GII strains were detected concomitant with 48 GI strains, and there was a seasonal difference between the GI and GII genotypes. Strengthening pathogen detection for infectious diarrhea was helpful for understanding the epidemiological characteristics of infections with NoV and, potentially, for preventing disease outbreaks.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: There is a lack of reliable predictors of disease behavior progression in patients with Crohn's disease (CD). Real-time shear-wave elastography (SWE) is a novel method for evaluating tissue stiffness. However, its value for assessing CD has not yet been investigated. We aimed to explore the value of SWE and other ultrasound parameters at diagnosis in predicting CD behavior progression. METHODS: We retrospectively collected data from patients with CD with the nonstenotic nonpenetrating disease (B1 phenotype based on the Montreal classification). All patients underwent intestinal ultrasound at baseline and were followed up. The end point was defined as disease behavior progression to stricturing (B2) or penetrating (B3) disease. Cox regression analysis was performed for the association between baseline characteristics and subsequent end points. In addition, a multivariate nomogram was established to predict the risk of disease behavior progression quantitatively. RESULTS: A total of 130 patients with CD with B1 phenotype were enrolled. Twenty-seven patients (20.8%) developed B2 or B3 disease, with a median follow-up of 33 months. Multivariate analysis identified that SWE was the only independent predictor of disease behavior progression (hazard ratio 1.08, 95% confidence interval 1.03-1.12, P = 0.001). A reverse of the HR appeared at the cutoff 12.75 kPa. The nomogram incorporating SWE and other clinical characteristics showed a good prediction performance (area under the curve = 0.792). DISCUSSION: Intestinal stiffness assessed using SWE is an independent predictor of disease behavior progression in patients with CD. Patients with CD with SWE >12.75 kPa at diagnosis are prone to progress toward stricturing or penetrating diseases.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To assess and compare the effectiveness and safety of flexible ureteroscopy (f-URS) with a novel flexible ureteral access sheath (f-UAS) versus mini-percutaneous nephrolithotripsy (mini-PCNL) in treating 2-3 cm renal stones. METHODS: Retrospectively analyzed consecutive cases that underwent f-URS with f-UAS (12/14 Fr) from January 29, 2022, to November 30, 2022. Consecutive cases that underwent mini-PCNL (18 Fr) from June 5, 2021, to January 26, 2022, were selected as controls. The f-UAS is a novel device with a 10 cm anterior tip that passively bends along with the f-URS to enter the renal calyx. We analyzed demographic characteristics, stone parameters, operative time, stone-free rates (SFR), hospitalization time, and complication. RESULTS: A total of 96 consecutive cases that underwent f-URS with f-UAS and 96 consecutive cases that underwent mini-PCNL were included in the study. There were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of operative time (p = 0.06), stone volume clearance (p = 0.533) and complete SFR (p = 0.266) on the first postoperative day or residual Stone after 1 month (p = 0.407). We observed a significantly shorter postoperative hospital stay (1.4 days vs. 2.1 days; p < 0.001) and a lower decrease in hemoglobin levels (0.39 g/dL vs. 0.68 g/dL; p < 0.001) in the f-UAS group. The mini-PCNL group had a significantly higher overall complication rate (13.5%) compared with the f-UAS group (5.2%; p = 0.048). CONCLUSIONS: In the treatment of 2-3 cm renal stones, f-URS with a novel f-UAS may provide a superior alternative to mini-PCNL, potentially challenging its established status.

RESUMO

In the last few decades, U(VI) is a significant environmental threat. The innovative and environmentally friendly adsorbent materials for U(VI) removal were urgent. Preparation of the modified biochar from wheat straw by combined composites of MnFe2O4 nanoparticles and chitosan Schiff base (MnFe2O4@CsSB/BC) was characterized, and adsorption experiments were carried out to investigate the performance and interfacial mechanism of U(VI) removal. The results showed that MnFe2O4@CsSB/BC exhibited high adsorption capacity of U(VI) compared with BC. The adsorption process of U(VI) removal by MnFe2O4@CsSB/BC could be ascribed as pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacity of U(VI) removal by MnFe2O4@CsSB/BC reached 19.57 mg/g at pH4.0, 30 mg/L of U(VI), and 25 °C. The possible mechanism was a chemical adsorption process, and it mainly contained electrostatic attraction and surface complexation. Additionally, it also was an economic and environmental friendly adsorbent.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the health systems efficiency in China and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries from 2015 to 2020. DESIGN: Health efficiency analysis using data envelopment analysis (DEA) and stochastic frontier approach analysis. SETTING: Health systems in China and ASEAN countries. METHODS: DEA-Malmquist model and SFA model were used to analyse the health system efficiency among China and ASEAN countries, and the Tobit regression model was employed to analyse the factors affecting the efficiency of health system among these countries. RESULTS: In 2020, the average technical efficiency, pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency of China and 10 ASEAN countries' health systems were 0.700, 1 and 0.701, respectively. The average total factor productivity (TFP) index of the health systems in 11 countries from 2015 to 2020 was 0.962, with a decrease of 1.4%, among which the average technical efficiency index was 1.016, and the average technical progress efficiency index was 0.947. In the past 6 years, the TFP index of the health system in Malaysia was higher than 1, while the TFP index of other countries was lower than 1. The cost efficiency among China and ASEAN countries was relatively high and stable. The per capita gross domestic product (current US$) and the urban population have significant effects on the efficiency of health systems. CONCLUSIONS: Health systems inefficiency is existing in China and the majority ASEAN countries. However, the lower/middle-income countries outperformed high-income countries. Technical efficiency is the key to improve the TFP of health systems. It is suggested that China and ASEAN countries should enhance scale efficiency, accelerate technological progress and strengthen regional health cooperation according to their respective situations.
