RESUMO

Naturally occurring protein nanocages like ferritin are self-assembled from multiple subunits. Because of their unique cage-like structure and biocompatibility, there is a growing interest in their biomedical use. A multipurpose and straightforward engineering approach does not exist for using nanocages to make drug-delivery systems by encapsulating hydrophilic or hydrophobic drugs and developing vaccines by surface functionalization with a protein like an antigen. Here, a versatile engineering approach is described by mimicking the HIV-1 Gap polyprotein precursor. Various PREcursors of nanoCages (PREC) are designed and created by linking two ferritin subunits via a flexible linker peptide containing a protease cleavage site. These precursors can have additional proteins at their N-terminus, and their protease cleavage generates ferritin-like nanocages named protease-induced nanocages (PINCs). It is demonstrated that PINC formation allows concurrent surface decoration with a protein and hydrophilic or hydrophobic drug encapsulation up to fourfold more than the amount achieved using other methods. The PINCs/Drug complex is stable and efficiently kills cancer cells. This work provides insight into the precursors' design rules and the mechanism of PINCs formation. The engineering approach and mechanistic insight described here will facilitate nanocages' applications in drug delivery or as a platform for making multifunctional therapeutics like mosaic vaccines.

This study extracted and purified a polysaccharide from Rehmanniae radix praeparata (RGP) with an average molecular weight. The structural characteristics of RGP and its iron(III) complex, RGP-Fe(III), were examined for their antioxidant properties and potential in treating iron deficiency anemia (IDA). Analysis revealed that RGP comprised Man, Rha, Gal, and Xyl, with a sugar residue skeleton featuring 1→3; 1→2, 3; and 1→2, 3, 4 linkages, among others. RGP-Fe(III) had a molecular weight of 4.39×104 Da. Notably, RGP-Fe(III) exhibited superior antioxidant activity compared to RGP alone. In IDA rat models, treatment with RGP-Fe(III) led to increased weight gain, restoration of key blood parameters including hemoglobin, red blood cells, and mean hemoglobin content, elevated serum iron levels, and decreased total iron-binding capacity. Histological examination revealed no observable toxic effects of RGP-Fe(III) on the liver and spleen. These findings suggest the potential of RGP-Fe(III) as a therapeutic agent for managing IDA and highlight its promising antioxidant properties.

Proximate-induced magnetic interactions present a promising strategy for precise manipulation of valley degrees of freedom. Taking advantage of the splendid valleytronic platform of transition metal dichalcogenides, magnetic two-dimensional VSe2 with different phases are introduced to intervene in the spin of electrons and modulate their valleytronic properties. When constructing the heterostructures, 1T-VSe2/WX2 (X = S and Se) showcases significant improvement in the valley polarizations at room temperature, while 2H-VSe2/WX2 exhibits superior performance at low temperatures and demonstrates heightened sensitivity to the external magnetic field. Simultaneously, considerable valley splitting with a large geff factor up to -29.0 is observed in 2H-VSe2/WS2, while it is negligible in 1T-VSe2/WX2. First-principles calculations reveal a phase-dependent magnetic proximity mechanism on the valleytronic modulations, which is dominated by interfacial charge transfer in 1T-VSe2/WX2 and the proximity exchange field in 2H-VSe2/WX2 heterostructures. The effective control over valley degrees of freedom will bridge the valleytronic physics and devices, rendering enormous potential in the field of valley quantum applications.

RATIONALE: With the development of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation (MALDI) mass spectrometry (MS) in spatial localisation omics research on small molecules, the detection sensitivity of the matrix must increase. However, the types of matrices suitable for detecting acidic small molecules in (-) MALDI-MS mode are very limited and are either not sensitive enough or difficult to obtain. METHODS: More than 10 commercially available benzimidazole and benzothiazole derivatives were selected as MALDI matrices in negative ion mode. MALDI-MS analysis was performed on 38 acidic small molecules and mouse serum, and the matrix effects were compared with those of the common commercial matrices 9-aminoacridine (9AA), 1,5-naphthalenediamine (DAN) and 3-aminoquinoline (3AQ). Moreover, the proton affinity (PA) of the selected potential matrix was calculated, and the relationships among the compound structure, PA value and matrix effect were discussed. RESULTS: In (-) MALDI-MS mode, a higher PA value generally indicates a better matrix effect. Amino-substituted 2-phenyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazole derivatives had well-defined matrix effects on all analytes and were generally superior to the commonly used matrices 9AA, DAN and 3AQ. Among them, 2-(4-(dimethylamino-phenyl)-1H-benzo[d]imidazole-5-amine (E-4) has the best sensitivity and versatility for detecting different analytes and has the best ability to detect fatty acids in mouse serum; moreover, the limit of detection (LOD) of some analytes can reach as low as ng/L. CONCLUSIONS: Compared to 9AA, DAN and 3AQ, matrix E-4 is more effective at detecting low-molecular-weight acidic compounds in (-) MALDI-MS mode, with higher sensitivity and better versatility. In addition, there is a clear correlation between compound structure, PA and matrix effects, which provides a basis for designing more efficient matrices.

Organic fluorescent materials (OFMs) play a crucial role in the development of biosensors, enabling the extraction of biochemical information within cells and organisms, extending to the human body. Concurrently, OFM biosensors contribute significantly to the progress of modern medical and biological research. However, the practical applications of OFM biosensors face challenges, including issues related to low resolution, dispersivity, and stability. To overcome these challenges, scientists have introduced interactive elements to enhance the order of OFMs. Highly-ordered assembled OFMs represent a novel material type applied to biosensors. In comparison to conventional fluorescent materials, highly-ordered assembled OFMs typically exhibit robust anti-diffusion properties, high imaging contrast, and excellent stability. This approach has emerged as a promising method for effectively tracking bio-signals, particularly in the non-invasive monitoring of chronic diseases. This review introduces several highly-ordered assembled OFMs used in biosensors and also discusses various interactions that are responsible for their assembly, such as hydrogen bonding, π-π interaction, dipole-dipole interaction, and ion electrostatic interaction. Furthermore, it delves into the various applications of these biosensors while addressing the drawbacks that currently limit their commercial application. This review aims to provide a theoretical foundation for designing high-performance, highly-ordered assembled OFM biosensors suitable for practical applications. Additionally, it sheds light on the evolving trends in OFM biosensors and their application fields, offering valuable insights into the future of this dynamic research area.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the residual of lumbago and leg pain with contained type (CT) and non-contained type (NCT) lumbar disc herniation (LDH) after transforaminal endoscopic treatment, and to explore the role of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α(HIF-1α) and transient receptor potential vanillate 1(TRPV1) pathway. METHODS: A total of 68 single-segment LDH patients were selected from July 2021 to October 2022, including 44 males and 24 females;aged 26 to 67 years old with an average of(43.63±11.94) years old;course of disease was 4 to 36 (18.91±10.34) months;body mass index was (24.45±4.00) kg·m-2;there were 7 cases of L3,4 segments, 32 cases of L4,5 segments, and 29 cases of L5S1 segments. All of them were performed with percutaneous intervertebral endoscopic extraction of nucleus pulposus and were divided into contained group(CT group) and non-contained group (NCT group) with 34 cases respectively according to the integrity of outer layer of fibrous annulus observed during operation. A total of 17 patients who underwent open surgery for scoliosis or vertebral fracture were selected as control group, including 12 males and 5 females;aged 21 to 65 years old with an average of (39.41±12.80) years old;body mass index was (24.86±4.11) kg·m-2. The relative mRNA expression quantity of HIF-1α, TRPV1 in nucleus pulposus were measured by quantitative real-time PCR. The contents of neurokinin 1 receptor (NK1R), nerve growth factor (NGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in nucleus pulposus and the serum substance P (SP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) were detected by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The threshold of lumbar tenderness was detected by a pressure pain meter. The degree of lumbago and lumbar function were evaluated by visual analog scale (VAS) and Oswestry disability index (ODI) separately. The residual rate of postoperative lumbago and leg pain was assessed. RESULTS: The mRNA relative expression quantity of HIF-1α and TRPV1, and the contents of NK1R, NGF and VEGF in nucleus pulposus, and the levels of serum SP and CGRP before surgery in the NCT group were higher than those in the CT group(P<0.05), and those in the CT group were higher than the control group(P<0.05). At day 7 after surgery, the serum SP and CGRP levels, lumbago and leg pain VAS scores and lumbar ODI index in two LDH groups were lower than before surgery (P<0.05), and those in the NCT group were higher than the CT group(P<0.05), and the threshold of lumbar tenderness in the NCT group was lower than the CT group(P<0.05). The differences of lumbago and leg pain VAS scores, lumbar ODI index and lumbar tenderness threshold between preoperative and postoperative 7 days in the NCT group were lower than those in the CT group(P<0.05). The residual rate of lumbago and leg pain at 7 days after surgery in the NCT group was higher than that in the CT group(P<0.05). CONCLUSION: HIF-1α and TRPV1 pathway promoted the excessive production of NGF, VEGF, NK1R in nucleus pulposus and serum neuropeptides SP and CGRP, which may lead to the higher residual rate of lumbago and leg pain with non-contained lumbar disc herniation postoperative.

Two-mode squeezed states, which are entangled states with bipartite quantum correlations in continuous-variable systems, are crucial in quantum information processing and metrology. Recently, continuous-variable quantum computing with the vibrational modes of trapped atoms has emerged with significant progress, featuring a high degree of control in hybridizing with spin qubits. Creating two-mode squeezed states in such a platform could enable applications that are only viable with photons. Here, we experimentally demonstrate two-mode squeezed states by employing atoms in a two-dimensional optical lattice as quantum registers. The states are generated by a controlled projection conditioned on the relative phase of two independent squeezed states. The individual squeezing is created by sudden jumps of the oscillators' frequencies, allowing generating of the two-mode squeezed states at a rate within a fraction of the oscillation frequency. We validate the states by entanglement steering criteria and Fock state analysis. Our results can be applied in other mechanical oscillators for quantum sensing and continuous-variable quantum information.

The study investigated the impact of salinity and pH changes on the survival, growth, and antioxidant enzyme activity in Mactra chinensis Philippi (1.00 ± 0.10 cm shell length, 0.75 ± 0.04 cm shell height), a marine clam species. Juveniles were exposed to various pH levels (5.4 - 9.6) and salinities (5 - 35 psu) for up to 20 days at 19 ± 0.5 ˚C. The individual effect of salinity and pH on juveniles were evaluated under pH 8.0 and salinity 30 psu, respectively. The results indicated that the highest survival rates were observed at pH 8.0 (85%, salinity = 30 psu) and salinity 30 psu (95%, pH = 8.0). The survival rates were significantly reduced at extreme pH (≤ 7.2; ≥ 8.4) and salinities (≤ 15; 35 psu). Additionally, oxidative stress was observed in clams exposed to low pH and salinity as indicated by the decreased activities of the antioxidant enzymes catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD). Notably, no significant difference in relative growth rates was observed between salinity 25 and 30 psu, between pH 7.8/8.4 and pH 8.0. Our results provide information on potential impact of pH and salinity changes on economically important bivalve species and may be used to optimize pH and salinity in aquaculture.

Water security is a critical concern due to intensifying anthropogenic activities and climate change. Delineating a water-related ecological security pattern can help to optimize spatial configuration, which in turn can inform sustainable water management. However, the methodology remains unclear. In this study, we developed a framework linking ecosystem service flow to water-related ecological security pattern; hence, we identified the sources, sinks, key corridors, and vulnerable nodes in Fujian Province, China. Our results revealed that the sources were located inland at high altitudes with a decreasing area trend in the south and an increasing area trend in the north, whereas the sinks were spread in coastal areas and exhibited a decreasing trend with relatively stable spatial distribution. The water-related ecological security has degraded as represented by a decreasing ecological supply-demand ratio over the last 30 years. Key corridors were identified in 17.12% of the rivers, and 22.5% of the vulnerable nodes were recognized as early warning nodes. Climate variability affected source distribution, while anthropogenic activities drove sink dynamics. These findings have important implications including landscape pattern planning and sustainable water management in the context of accelerated land use/cover and climate changes.

Infertility affects about 10% of the world's population and has been recognized by the WHO as a global public health problem. The aim of this network meta-analysis was to investigate the efficacy of non-pharmaceutical interventions on sperm quality. All randomized clinical trials (RCTs) from the PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, China national knowledge infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang database, and Cochrane Library databases evaluating the effectiveness of non-pharmaceutical interventions on semen parameters using network meta-analyses. Results of the ω-3 fatty acid, lycopene, acupuncture, and vitamin suggested evident advantages in improving sperm concentration (MD, 9.93 (95% CI, 7.21 to 12.65)), (MD, 8.79 (95% CI, 2.67 to 14.91)), (MD, 5.40 (95% CI, 2.32 to 8.49)) and (MD, 3.82 (95% CI, 0.70 to 6.94) respectively). Acupuncture has a significant advantage over placebo in improving sperm total motility (MD, 17.81 (95% CI, 10.32 to 25.29)), and the effect of lycopene was obviously greater than that of placebo (MD, 19.91 (95% CI, 2.99 to 36.83)). Lycopene, Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), acupuncture, ω-3 fatty acid, and vitamin suggested significant advantages in improving sperm forward motility (MD, 8.64 (95% CI, 1.15 to 16.13), MD, 5.28 (95% CI, 2.70 to 7.86), MD, 3.95 (95% CI, 3.23 to 4.67), MD, 3.50 (95% CI, 2.21 to 4.79)) and (MD, 2.38 (95% CI, 0.96 to 3.80) respectively). This review establishes that non-pharmaceutical interventions, particularly acupuncture, exercise, lycopene, ω-3 fatty acids, CoQ10, zinc, vitamins, selenium, carnitine, or foods rich in these supplements, profitably improve sperm quality that may be used to treat male infertility.

Objective: The present study compared the effects of two different resistance types (pneumatic resistance and free weight) of 6-week squat training on the performance for young female judo athletes in linear speed and vertical jump by utilizing the maximum power of each set of squats in each training session as the monitoring vehicle. Monitoring data were used to assess the effects and trends of the two resistance types on 70% 1RM weight-bearing during the 6-week intervention training. Methods: In a 6 weeks squat training (2 reps/week with a constant load), 23 adolescent female judo athletes (Age span: 13-16 years, 14.58 ± 0.96) were randomly selected and then divided into the traditional barbell (FW) group (n = 12) and the pneumatic resistance (PN) (n = 11) group according to different resistance types (free weight and pneumatic resistance), with 10 in FW group and 9 in PN group actually completed the study. Before and after training, the 30-m Sprint time (T-30M), vertical jump height and relative power (countermovement jump, static-squat jump, and drop jump), reactive strength index (DJ-RSI), and maximal strength were assessed. One-Way ANOVA was used to examine the pre-test differences of groups (FW and PN). A 2-factor mixed-model analysis of variance was used to examine the independent effects of group (FW and PN) and time (pre and post) on each dependent measure. Scheffe post hoc comparisons were used to examine the differences. Pre- and post-experimental differences between the two groups were analyzed using independent samples t-tests and magnitude-based inferences (MBI) derived from their p values, and effect statistics were applied to compare the pre- and post-changes exhibited by each group to identify the potential beneficiary groups. Results: The PN group outperformed the FW group in terms of maximal power output per training session (822.5 ± 55.22 vs. 927.42 ± 48.15, conventional vs. pneumatic, p < 0.001, effect size = -2.02). After 6 weeks of training, the FW group showed significant increases in vertical jump height and relative strength (CMJ, SJ, DJ), with no significant gains observed in T-30 and maximal strength. The PN group showed significant improvements in maximal strength; however, no significant improvements were observed in the other tests. In addition, there was no significant difference in DJ-RSI between the two groups before and after training. Discussion: At 70% weight bearing, free weight resistance appears to be more conducive to vertical jump growth, while pneumatic resistance appears to be more conducive to maximal strength gains; however, the maximal strength gains from pneumatic resistance may not be well applied to athletic performance. In addition, the body adapts more quickly to pneumatic resistance than to free weight resistance.

Through the inclusion of two kinds of birefringence reactive groups, that is, Pb2+ cations with stereochemically active lone pairs and π-conjugated [B2O5] groups, a new pyroborate Li2PbB2O5 used to be acquired by the usage of the high-temperature solution method. The three-dimensional structural framework of Li2PbB2O5 is made up of highly distorted [PbO5] polyhedra and parallelly arranged π-conjugated [B2O5] groups via the connection of four- and five-coordinated Li+ cations. The birefringence of Li2PbB2O5 is 0.091 at 1064 nm, which is relatively large and revealed by the first-principles calculations. The contribution from the synergistic effect of the two kinds of birefringence reactive groups was substantiated via the analysis of the real-space atom cutting method. Also, the diffuse reflectance spectrum suggests that Li2PbB2O5 features a band gap of 4.0 eV, which corresponds to an ultraviolet (UV) cutoff edge. We hope that this work will foster further improvements in the design of UV birefringent crystal materials in the borate system.

The fluorooxoborate A2B6O9F2 family (A = alkali metal) has attracted much attention because of its diverse structures and properties. Herein, two new members of this family, (NH4)2B6O9F2 and K2B6O9F2, have been synthesized which exhibit different two-dimensional [B6O9F2]∞ layered structures. Millimeter-sized crystals of (NH4)2B6O9F2 have been grown with NH4F as the flux. The transmittance spectrum indicates that it has a wide UV transparency window with a cutoff edge lower than 180 nm. First-principles calculations show that both (NH4)2B6O9F2 and K2B6O9F2 have deep-UV cutoff edges and moderate birefringence. The contributions of the constituent structural groups to the optical properties are discussed.

Objective: Neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) is the recommended standard treatment for locally advanced esophageal cancer (LA-EC). This study aimed to determine whether sex makes a difference in cancer-specific survival (CSS) and construct a novel nomogram model to predict CSS for LA-EC after nCRT based on the SEER database. Methods: Patients coded by 04-15 were identified from the SEER database. Patients with systemic treatment and radiotherapy before surgery were defined as nCRT. We further divided this population into a training group and a verification group at a ratio of 7:3. Univariate and multivariate cox analyses were applied to determine the prognostic risk factors based on the training cohort, and then the Nomogram model was established. The area under the curve (AUC) was used to evaluate the predictive ability of the model. We used the calibration curve to evaluate the consistency between the predicted status and actual status and decision curve analysis (DCA) to evaluate the clinical value. We used X-tile software to determine the best cut-off value of nomogram scores and divided the population into low-risk, medium-risk, and high-risk groups, and Kaplan-Meier analysis was applied to compare the CSS. Results: A total of 2096 LA-EC patients were included for further analysis, with 1,540 in the training cohort and 656 in the validation group. Male (HR: 1.29, 95% CI, 1.04 -1.58), T stage, N stage, and M stage were identified as independent risk factors of CSS based on the training cohort. A Nomogram model was constructed to predict the 3-, 5- and 7-years CSS. ROC curve and AUC confirmed that this nomogram has median discrimination ability. The calibration curve showed good agreement between predicted status and actual status. The DCA curves confirmed the clinical value. Kaplan-Meier analysis indicated that patients in the high-risk subgroup had poorer CSS in both the training cohort and validation cohort (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Male patients had poorer CSS in LA-EC patients after nCRT. A nomogram model composed of sex, T stage, N stage, and M stage was constructed to identify the high-risk population and provide a personalized follow-up plan.

The abnormal neointima formation caused by the phenotypic switching of vascular smooth cells (VSMCs) into a synthetic state plays a key role in the pathogenesis of various vascular diseases, including atherosclerosis and postangioplasty restenosis. Theaflavin-3,3'-digallate (TF3) in black tea has been reported to exert antiinflammatory and anticancer effects, but its role in neointima formation remains unclear. Here, we delineated a remarkable effect of TF3 in suppressing neointima formation of VSMCs in vivo as well as the ability of primary rat aortic smooth cells (RASMCs) to proliferate and migrate in vitro. Further study confirmed that the effects of TF3 on PDGF-BB-induced RASMCs were due to reduced phosphorylation of PDGFRß, which led to the repression of downstream pathways. We concluded that TF3 may act as a repressor in the progression of neointima formation and serve as a potential therapeutic candidate for excessive phenotypic switching of VSMCs.

OBJECTIVE: Most men suffering from depression have different degrees of erectile dysfunction (ED), but the relationship between depression and ED is not clear. This study explored the effect of depression on erectile function in rats and the underlying mechanism. METHODS: The potential targets and key signaling pathways of depression and ED were predicted through bioinformatics analysis, and a depression rat model was established by inducing chronic restraint stress. Pathological changes in rat penis tissue were studied by hematoxylin and eosin staining. The serum dopamine level was quantified by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The expression of related proteins and mRNA was detected by western blotting and real-time quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: Hematoxylin and eosin staining showed pathological damage in the penile tissue of the model group rats. The serum dopamine level, dopamine receptor D2 (DRD2) and solute carrier family 6 member 3 (SLC6A3) protein levels in penile tissue, and DRD2 and SLC6A3 mRNA levels were lower in the model group than in the control group. CONCLUSION: The decrease in erectile function in the depression rat model was related to dysfunction of the dopamine system and dopaminergic synapse signaling pathway.

Stainless steels (SSs) easily suffer localized corrosion damage, such as pitting corrosion, in mixed solutions of acetic acid and sodium chloride. Currently, few works have been focused on the early stages of the pitting corrosion (metastable pitting corrosion) process of SSs in a chloride-HAc mixture solution. In this work, the effects of acetic acid (HAc) and its concentration on metastable pitting corrosion and the uniform corrosion of 304 SS in 0.6 mol/L NaCl solution were investigated by a slow-scanning potentiodynamic polarization test, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results show that the uniform corrosion rate of 304 SS increases after HAc addition but, with an increase in HAc concentration, the corrosion rate decreases. In the presence of HAc, the metastable pitting potential (Em) and stable pitting potential (Eb) move negatively, but the number of metastable pits notably decreases. HAc has a promoting action on the growth rate of the metastable pits and facilitates the transition from metastable pits to stable pits. The influence of HAc is related to a decrease in solution pH and the chemical adsorption of HAc.

In this work, a small amount of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was used to partially replace the silica in ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) to prepare EPDM composites via mechanical blending. The mechanical properties, thermal-oxidative aging properties and thermal stability of the composites were systematically investigated. The results showed that with the increase of CNTs content, the Shore A hardness and stress at 100% strain of the composites increased, while the elongation at break decreased. With the aging time increasing, the aging coefficient and elongation at break of composites decreased while hardness increased due to the raise of crosslinking density. In addition, evidences were found to demonstrate the improved aging resistance by adding CNTs in the EPDM composites, including the less change in Shore A hardness, the smaller change ratio of elongation at break and the lower aging coefficient. When the content of CNTs reached 10 phr, the aging coefficient of the EPDM composite aged for 168 h was nearly twice that of the composite without CNTs, and the thermal stability of the EPDM composite with CNTs was improved as demonstrated by thermal analysis.

In spite of many anti-cancer drugs utilized in clinical treatment, cancer is still one of the diseases with the highest morbidity and mortality worldwide, owing to the complexity and heterogeneity of the tumor microenvironment. Compared with conventional 2D tumor models, 3D scaffolds could provide structures and a microenvironment which stimulate native tumor tissues more accurately. The extracellular matrix (ECM) is the main component of the cell in the microenvironment that is mainly composed of three-dimensional nanofibers, which can form nanoscale fiber networks, while the decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) has been widely applied to engineered scaffolds. In this study, pig kidney was used as the source material to prepare dECM scaffolds. A chemical crosslinking method was used to improve the mechanical properties and other physical characteristics of the decellularized pig kidney-derived scaffold. Furthermore, a human breast cancer cell line (MCF-7) was used to further investigate the biocompatibility of the scaffold to fabricate a tumor model. The results showed that the existence of nanostructures in the scaffold plays an important role in cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation. Therefore, the pig kidney-derived matrix scaffold prepared by decellularization could provide more cell attachment sites, which is conducive to cell adhesion and proliferation, physiological activities, and tumor model construction.

Ultraviolet (UV) nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals which can produce short-wavelength lasers via a direct second harmonic generation (SHG) process are of great importance in modern laser technology. Currently, the exploration of UV NLO crystals in borosulfates is nearly stagnant since the non-phase matching (PM) property lies on the small birefringence induced by the intrinsically small optical anisotropy of the tetrahedral groups. Herein, for the first time, the planar [BO3 ] units were introduced into borosulfates leading to a boron-rich borosulfate (NH4 )2 B4 SO10 with unprecedented [B4 SO10 ]∞ layers and evidently enhanced birefringence. To the best of our knowledge, it achieves the shortest SHG PM wavelength of 252 nm in all reported borosulfates with deep UV cutoff edge (184 nm), large SHG response (1.1×KDP at 1064 nm and 0.15×ß-BBO at 532 nm) and large birefringence (0.053 at 1064 nm) and is easy to grow single crystals via simple chemical vapor deposition method. These results confirm the feasibility of utilizing planar [BO3 ] units to optimize birefringence of borosulfates, and also open up broad prospects for UV NLO crystals in boron-rich borosulfates.
