BACKGROUND: Behcet's disease (BD) is an inflammatory disorder known for various symptoms, including oral and genital ulcers and ocular inflammation. Panuveitis, a severe eye condition, is rare as the first sign of BD. CASE SUMMARY: We present an unusual case of a 30-year-old man who developed panuveitis after receiving the mRNA-based coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine (Moderna). Laboratory tests ruled out infections, but he had a positive HLA-B51 result and a history of genital ulcer and oral ulcers, leading to a BD diagnosis. Treatment with corticosteroids improved his condition. Interestingly, he had another episode of panuveitis after the second mRNA vaccine dose, which also responded to corticosteroids. CONCLUSION: This case highlights the rare onset of BD following mRNA COVID-19 vaccination, suggesting a potential link between these vaccines and BD's eye symptoms, emphasizing the importance of quick treatment in similar cases.

BACKGROUND: The present study compares the anatomical and functional outcomes (best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and central macular thickness (CMT)) among membrane peeling with or without SF6 tamponade in patients with epiretinal membrane. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients diagnosed with macular pucker who underwent pars plana vitrectomy and membrane peeling in a tertiary center in Taiwan from January 2021 to December 2022. Subjects were categorized into with or without SF6 tamponade groups (SF6 group and BSS group). Postoperative intraocular pressure and complications were documented. Logistic regression analyses were performed to identify the prognostic factors during follow-up. RESULTS: A total of 89 eyes were enrolled, including 34 eyes in the BSS group and 55 eyes in the SF6 group. The mean age was 66 years old, and a female predilection was demonstrated. Both groups possessed statistically significant improvement in BCVA and CMT after the operation. There was no significant difference in CMT between the groups at any time of observation, yet we observed significant differences in baseline BCVA and BCVA at last follow-up among the two groups. Both groups yielded an approximate enhancement of LogMAR 0.3 in BCVA postoperatively. There was no significant difference noted in postoperative IOP between the two groups. CONCLUSION: Membrane peeling with or without SF6 tamponade yields comparable outcomes anatomically and functionally. This may indicate that SF6 tamponade for idiopathic macular pucker surgery may not provide extra benefit, and therefore warrants reconsideration as standard procedure.

The phenolic aldehyde syringaldehyde (SA) has been shown to have an antihyperglycemic effect in diabetic rats due to increased glucose utilization and insulin sensitivity. To understand the direct effect of SA on the GLP-1 receptor, STZ-induced diabetic rats were used. The levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, liver enzymes, and renal function were measured using specific ELISA kits. The mechanisms of SA effects were investigated using CHO-K1 cells, pancreatic Min-6 cells, and cardiomyocyte H9c2 cells. The results indicated that the antihyperglycemic effect of SA in diabetic rats was abolished by blocking the GLP-1 receptor with an antagonist. SA has a direct effect on the GLP-1 receptor when using CHO-K1 cells transfected with the exogenous GLP-1 receptor gene. In addition, SA stimulated insulin production in Min-6 cells by activating GLP-1 receptors. SA caused a dose-dependent rise in GLP-1 receptor mRNA levels in cardiac H9c2 cells. These in vitro results support the notion that SA has a direct effect on the GLP-1 receptor. Otherwise, SA inhibited the increase of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including interleukins and tumor TNF-α, in type 1 diabetic rats in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, as with liraglutide, SA reduced plasma lipid profiles, including total cholesterol and triglyceride, in mixed diet-induced type 2 diabetic rats. Intriguingly, chronic treatment with SA (as with liraglutide) reversed the functions of both the liver and the kidney in these diabetic rats. SA displayed less efficiency in reducing body weight and food consumption compared to liraglutide. In conclusion, SA effectively activates GLP-1 receptors, resulting in a reduction in diabetic-related complications in rats. Therefore, it is beneficial to develop SA as a chemical agonist for clinical applications in the future.

Esophageal cancer (EC) is one of the most aggressive gastrointestinal cancers. Despite improvements in therapies, the survival rate of patients with EC remains low. Metastasis accounts for up to 90% of cancer-related deaths, and resistance to anti-neoplastic therapeutics is also a main cause of poor survival. Thus, metastasis and drug resistance are undoubtedly the two main challenges in cancer treatment. Among the different categories of noncoding RNAs, lncRNAs have historically drawn less attention. However, lncRNAs have gradually become a research hotspot, and increasing research has demonstrated that lncRNAs participate in the tumorigenesis of multiple types of cancer, including EC. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are RNA transcripts longer than 200 nucleotides in length that play important roles in epigenetics, transcription regulation, and posttranscriptional processing. In this review, we elucidated the role of lncRNAs in the metastasis and drug resistance of EC and discussed their potential clinical applications and related limitations. With a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms of lncRNAs, we can identify therapeutic targets for EC in the future.

Abnormal expansion of trinucleotide CGG repeats is responsible for Fragile X syndrome. AGG interruptions in CGG repeat tracts were found in most healthy individuals, suggesting a crucial role in preventing disease-prone repeat expansion. Previous biophysics studies emphasize a difference in the secondary structure affected by AGG interruptions. However, the mechanism of how AGG interruptions impede repeat expansion remains elusive. We utilized single-molecule fluorescence resonance energy transfer spectroscopy to investigate the structural dynamics of CGG repeats and their AGG-interrupted variants. Tandem CGG repeats fold into a stem-loop hairpin structure with the capability to undergo a conformational rearrangement to modulate the length of the overhang. However, this conformational rearrangement is much more retarded when two AGG interruptions are present. Considering the significance of hairpin slippage in repeat expansion, we present a molecular basis suggesting that the internal loop created by two AGG interruptions acts as a barrier, obstructing the hairpin slippage reconfiguration. This impediment potentially plays a crucial role in curbing abnormal expansion, thereby contributing to the genomic stability.

RATIONALE: Exudative retinal detachment with macular edema is one of the complications of retinitis pigmentosa (RP). In this report, we present a case who treated with intravitreal injection of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) in RP-related exudative retinal detachment and subsequently improved with favorable outcome. PATIENT CONCERN: A 49-year-old man, with a history of RP, had persistent blurred vision and was newly diagnosed with bilateral shallow exudative retinal detachment and macular edema. DIAGNOSIS: Fluorescein angiography showed bilateral diffuse dye leakage with macular pooling, and systemic survey excluded the possibility of infection or autoimmune disease. INTERVENTIONS: The patient was treated with intravitreal injection of aflibercept, one of the anti-VEGF agents, for bilateral eyes. Recurrent exudative retinal detachment and macular edema were noted, and repeated intravitreal injections of aflibercept in bilateral eyes were then arranged. Subsequently, bilateral macular edema and exudative retinal detachment subsided again, and the treatment course lasted for approximately 1 year. OUTCOMES: After 1 year, the exudative retinal detachment with macular edema was much improved. In the meanwhile, visual functional improvement was also achieved. LESSONS: This case illustrated the possibility of intravitreal injection of anti-VEGF therapy for the treatment of this rare complication of RP, and it may be a newly explored alternative treatment.

BACKGROUND: Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) outperform warfarin in vascular and bleeding events in atrial fibrillation (AF) patients. Yet, effects of DOACs on congestive heart failure (CHF) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) remain less explored. METHODS: Using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, a nationwide retrospective cohort study was conducted. The study matched 5,683 non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) edoxaban patients with 11,366 warfarin patients, and 703 NVAF with cancer (NVAF-C) edoxaban patients with 1,406 warfarin patients. Vasular and non-vascular outcomes, with focuses on CHF and AD, were compared between the edoxaban and warfarin users. RESULTS: Edoxaban significantly lowered adjusted hazrad ratio (aHR) of all-cause mortality, hospitalization for gastrointestinal bleeding, and CHF (0.37, 0.74, and 0.26, respectively, in NVAF; 0.39, 0.67, and 0.31, respectively, in NVAF-C, all p < 0.05), compared to warfarin. Edoxaban was associated with significantly lower aHRs of acute myocardial infarction, peripheral artery disease, venous thromboembolism, pulmonary embolism, and AD (0.71, 0.48, 0.55, 0.20, and 0.66, respectively; all p < 0.05) in NVAF patients versus warfarin. However, edoxaban had higher aHR of hospitalized bleeding (1.19, p = 0.002) than warfarin in NVAF patients, but not in NVAF-C patients. CONCLUSIONS: Edoxaban demonstrated lowered CHF risks in both NVAF and NVAF-C patients, and reduced AD occurrence in NVAF patients versus warfarin. These findings advocate for edoxaban's use in AF cases. CLINICAL PERSPECTIVE: What Is New?: The study reveals that in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), edoxaban, a direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC), demonstrates significant advantages over warfarin. Notably, edoxaban is associated with a reduced risk of congestive heart failure (CHF) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) when compared to warfarin.Clinical Implications?: These findings have important clinical implications. Edoxaban appears to be a superior anticoagulant choice for AF patients, as it lowers the risk of CHF and AD. This highlights the potential of edoxaban to improve patient outcomes and underscores its relevance for managing AF cases.

Andrographolide (ADG) is contained in bitter plants, and its effects are widely thought to be associated with taste receptors. The current study used animal studies and cell lines to investigate the role of ADG in diabetic models. The Takeda G-protein-coupled receptor (TGR5) was directly influenced by ADG, and this boosted GLP-1 synthesis in CHO-K1 cells transfected with the TGR5 gene. However, this was not seen in TGR5-mutant cells. The human intestinal L-cell line NCI-H716 showed an increase in GLP-1 production in response to ADG. In NCI-H716 cells, the TGR5 inhibitor triamterene reduced the effects of ADG, including the rise in TGR5 mRNA levels that ADG caused. Additionally, as with the antihyperglycemic impact in type-1 diabetic rats, the increase in plasma-active GLP-1 level caused by ADG was enhanced by a DPP-4 inhibitor. The recovery of the hypoglycemic effect in diabetic rats and the increase in plasma GLP-1 caused by ADG were both suppressed by TGR5 blockers. As a result, after activating TGR5, ADG may boost GLP-1 synthesis in diabetic rats, enhancing glucose homeostasis. In Min-6 cells, a pancreatic cell line grown in culture, ADG-induced insulin secretion was also examined. Blocking GLP-1 receptors had little impact, suggesting that ADG directly affects TGR5 activity in Min-6 cells. A TGR5 mRNA level experiment in Min-6 cells further confirmed that TGR5 is activated by ADG. The current study revealed a novel finding suggesting that ADG may activate TGR5 in diabetic rats in a way that results in enhanced insulin and GLP-1 production, which may be helpful for future research and therapies.

Chronic hyperglycemia involves persistent high-glucose exposure and correlates with retinal degeneration. It causes various diseases, including diabetic retinopathy (DR), a major cause of adult vision loss. Most in vitro studies have investigated the damaging short-term effects of high glucose exposure on retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells. DR is also a severe complication of diabetes. In this study, we established a model with prolonged high-glucose exposure (15 and 75 mM exogenous glucose for two months) to mimic RPE tissue pathophysiology in patients with hyperglycemia. Prolonged high-glucose exposure attenuated glucose uptake and clonogenicity in ARPE-19 cells. It also significantly increased reactive oxygen species levels and decreased antioxidant protein (superoxide dismutase 2) levels in RPE cells, possibly causing oxidative stress and DNA damage and impairing proliferation. Western blotting showed that autophagic stress, endoplasmic reticulum stress, and genotoxic stress were induced by prolonged high-glucose exposure in RPE cells. Despite a moderate apoptotic cell population detected using the Annexin V-staining assay, the increases in the senescence-associated proteins p53 and p21 and SA-ß-gal-positive cells suggest that prolonged high-glucose exposure dominantly sensitized RPE cells to premature senescence. Comprehensive next-generation sequencing suggested that upregulation of oxidative stress and DNA damage-associated pathways contributed to stress-induced premature senescence of ARPE-19 cells. Our findings elucidate the pathophysiology of hyperglycemia-associated retinal diseases and should benefit the future development of preventive drugs. Prolonged high-glucose exposure downregulates glucose uptake and oxidative stress by increasing reactive oxygen species (ROS) production through regulation of superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2) expression. Autophagic stress, ER stress, and DNA damage stress (genotoxic stress) are also induced by prolonged high-glucose exposure in RPE cells. Consequently, multiple stresses induce the upregulation of the senescence-associated proteins p53 and p21. Although both apoptosis and premature senescence contribute to high glucose exposure-induced anti-proliferation of RPE cells, the present work shows that premature senescence rather than apoptosis is the dominant cause of RPE degeneration, eventually leading to the pathogenesis of DR.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate whether intravitreal aflibercept was safe and effective in patients with acute nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). METHODS: This was a chart study of 25 individuals with acute NAION (25 eyes). An intravitreal injection of 2 mg/0.05 mL of aflibercept was administered to fifteen participants. The remaining ten patients in the control group were given standard care. The researchers measured the initial visual acuity, retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT), and automated perimetry. During the follow-up period, the researchers measured the final visual acuity, RNFLT, automated perimetry, and side effects. RESULTS: Visual acuity and visual field assessment were significantly improved in the study group, and optical coherence tomography testing demonstrated significant disc edema resolution. The therapy results differed significantly between the two groups regarding visual outcomes (F = 0.027, p = 0.039) and RNFLT decrease (F = 5.507, p = 0.003). However, the difference in visual field alterations was not significant (F = 0.724, p = 0.387). CONCLUSIONS: Intravitreal injection of aflibercept can significantly improve visual acuity and resolve disc edema in patients with acute NAION. Intravitreal aflibercept may be an alternative treatment for acute NAION. However, a large series investigation is needed to assess the long-term therapeutic benefit and safety of intravitreal aflibercept in patients with acute NAION.

Background: In addition to cardiotoxicity, ocular toxicity induced by chemotherapeutic agents is not uncommon. Objective: This study aimed to explore the association between ocular adverse events and major adverse cardiovascular events (composite endpoint) caused by chemotherapy, and whether specific ocular events could be potential predictors of some specific components of the composite endpoint. Methods: A total of 5378 newly diagnosed patients (age > 18 y/o) with any malignancy or metastatic solid tumors who received chemotherapy from January 1997 to December 2010 were enrolled from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. Patients who developed new incident ocular diseases were classified as the study group, and those who did not develop incident ocular diseases as the control group. Results: After propensity score matching, there was a significant increase in the incidence of stroke in the ocular diseases group compared to the no ocular diseases group (13.4% vs. 4.5%, p < 0.0001). Tear film insufficiency, keratopathy, glaucoma, and lens disorders were associated with a significantly higher risk of stroke. A longer duration of methotrexate and a longer duration with higher total amount of tamoxifen were associated with both incident ocular diseases and incident stroke. Cox proportional hazards regression showed that the only independent risk factor for stroke was incident ocular diseases [Adjusted relative risk (95% confidence interval): 2.96 (1.66-5.26), p = 0.0002]. In addition, incident ocular disease was the most significant risk factor compared with other traditional cardiovascular risk factors. Conclusions: Incident ocular diseases related to chemotherapy were associated with a significantly higher risk of stroke.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Oral cancer is a general term for carcinomas that occur around the oral tissues, and most are squamous cell carcinoma. Oral cancer is a common disease among Taiwanese males and poses a great threat to national health owing to its high mortality rate. In this study, we used the CAL-27 oral cancer cell lines as in vitro models to investigate the pathways involved in 11-epi-sinulariolide acetate (11-epi-SA)-induced apoptosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: There have been no previous studies of the anticancer activity of 11-epi-SA isolated from Sinularia flexibilis against oral cancer. We used MTT assay, cell morphologic analysis, DNA fragmentation, TUNEL/DAPI assay, and JC-1 fluorescence staining to analyze the inhibitory effect of 11-epi-SA against the CAL-27 oral cancer cell line and assessed the potential molecular mechanism of apoptosis using western blot. RESULTS: Our results showed that 11-epi-SA inhibited CAL-27 cell proliferation, and its effect on cell growth was mediated through an apoptotic pathway mechanism. 11-epi-SA inhibited the PI3K/AKT pathway, allowing downstream FOXO to separate from 14-3-3 and return to the nucleus. We also observed that 11-epi-SA disrupted mitochondrial Bcl family protein homeostasis and activated caspase-3 and caspase-9, which led to apoptosis. CONCLUSION: A low concentration of 11-epi-SA can effectively induce apoptosis in oral cancer cells through the PI3K/AKT/FOXO pathway. 11-epi-SA has great potential as a new drug for the treatment of oral cancer.

Introduction: Microbes in the built environment have been implicated as a source of infectious diseases. Bacterial culture is the standard method for assessing the risk of exposure to pathogens in urban environments, but this method only accounts for <1% of the diversity of bacteria. Recently, full-length 16S rRNA gene analysis using nanopore sequencing has been applied for microbial evaluations, resulting in a rise in the development of long-read taxonomic tools for species-level classification. Regarding their comparative performance, there is, however, a lack of information. Methods: Here, we aim to analyze the concordance of the microbial community in the urban environment inferred by multiple taxonomic classifiers, including ARGpore2, Emu, Kraken2/Bracken and NanoCLUST, using our 16S-nanopore dataset generated by MegaBLAST, as well as assess their abilities to identify culturable species based on the conventional culture results. Results: According to our results, NanoCLUST was preferred for 16S microbial profiling because it had a high concordance of dominant species and a similar microbial profile to MegaBLAST, whereas Kraken2/Bracken, which had similar clustering results as NanoCLUST, was also desirable. Second, for culturable species identification, Emu with the highest accuracy (81.2%) and F1 score (29%) for the detection of culturable species was suggested. Discussion: In addition to generating datasets in complex communities for future benchmarking studies, our comprehensive evaluation of the taxonomic classifiers offers recommendations for ongoing microbial community research, particularly for complex communities using nanopore 16S rRNA sequencing.

BACKGROUND: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a disease of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells. We have previously demonstrated that blue light can damage RPE cells and their underlying mechanisms. We found that hexahydrocurcumin (HHC), a metabolite of curcumin, had better retinal protection than curcumin. However, the involved mechanisms remain unclear. METHODS: By exposing ARPE-19 human RPE cells and mouse primary RPE cells to blue light, the intracellular mechanisms of HHC in cells were investigated, including the proliferation of RPE cells and the effects of HHC on activating intracellular protective mechanisms and related factors. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) RNA sequencing revealed the underlying mechanisms involved in the induction and regulation of HHC treatment following blue light exposure. RESULTS: HHC promoted autophagy by enhancing autophagic flux, reduced oxidative stress and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, and effectively reversed blue light-induced cell death. RNA sequencing-based bioinformatics approaches comprehensively analyze HHC-mediated cellular processes. CONCLUSION: Our findings elucidate the mechanisms of HHC against blue light damage in RPE cells and are beneficial for the development of natural metabolite-based preventive drugs or functional foods.

Diabetes is commonly treated with glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R) agonists including liraglutide and others. However, liraglutide was found to raise plasma glucose levels in normal rats. The current study aims to determine how liraglutide causes this contentious condition in rats, both normal and diabetic. An adrenalectomy was performed to investigate the relationship between steroid hormone and liraglutide. To investigate the effect of central liraglutide infusion on blood glucose in rats, rats were intracerebroventricularly administrated with liraglutide with or without HPA axis inhibitors such as berberine and dexamethasone. The results showed that a single injection of liraglutide caused a temporary increase in blood glucose in healthy rats. Another GLP-1R agonist, Exendin-4 (Ex-4), increased blood sugar in a manner similar to that of liraglutide. The effects of liraglutide were also blocked by guanethidine pretreatment and vanished in normal rats with adrenalectomy. Additionally, central infusion of liraglutide via intracerebroventricular (icv) injection into normal rats also causes a temporary increase in blood glucose that was blocked by GLP-1R antagonists or the inhibitors such as berberine and dexamethasone. Similarly, central liraglutide treatment causes temporary increases in plasma glucose, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), and cortisol levels, which were reversed by inhibitors for the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. In normal rats, the temporary glucose-increasing effect of liraglutide was gradually eliminated during consecutive daily treatments, indicating tolerance formation. Additionally, liraglutide and Ex-4 cross-tolerance was also discovered in normal rats. Liraglutide was more effective in diabetic rats than in normal rats in activating GLP-1R gene expression in the isolated adrenal gland. Interestingly, the effect of liraglutide on glycemic control varied depending on whether the rats were diabetic or not. In normal rats, bolus injection of liraglutide, such as Ex-4, may stimulate the HPA axis, resulting in hyperglycemia. The cross-tolerance of liraglutide and Ex-4 provided a novel perspective on GLP-1R activation.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is the most lethal cancer, with a dismal 5-year survival rate of less than 10%. It is estimated that approximately 80% of pancreatic ductal carcinoma (PDAC) patients are diagnosed at an advanced or metastatic stage. Hence, most patients are not appropriate candidates for surgical resection and therefore require systemic chemotherapy. However, it has been reported that most patients develop chemoresistance within several months, partly because of antiapoptotic mechanisms. Hence, inducing alternative programmed cell death (PCD), including ferroptosis, necroptosis or pyroptosis, seems to be a promising strategy to overcome antiapoptosis-mediated chemoresistance. In this review, we shed light on the molecular mechanisms of ferroptosis, necroptosis and pyroptosis and suggest several potential strategies (e.g., compounds and nanoparticles [NPs]) that are capable of triggering nonapoptotic PCD to suppress PDAC progression. In conclusion, these strategies might serve as adjuvants in combination with clinical first-line chemotherapies to improve patient survival rates.

Purpose: To evaluate the long-term anatomic and functional outcomes of autologous neurosensory retinal free flap transplantation (ART) for patients with refractory large macular hole (MH). Design: Retrospective interventional case series. Methods: We reviewed 9 patients who underwent ART for their refractory large MH. In this extended follow-up study, postoperative assessment including spectral-domain optical coherence tomography and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) were recorded at 12, 15, 18, 21, and 24 months after surgery. Results: The macular hole of all patients appeared successfully closed during the whole follow-up period. The mean logMAR BCVA improved from 1.61 ± 0.44 (preoperative) to 0.72 ± 0.30 (12 months after surgery) (p < 0.001). Thereafter, the mean BCVA remained stable at each follow-up. At the mean 16.0 ± 0.8 months postoperatively, inner retinal cystic changes were observed in 4 eyes (44.4%), but these did not significantly affect vision. Conclusion: ART is a good alternative technique for closing large refractory macular holes. Although inner retinal cystic changes were observed in 4 eyes (44.4%), this phenomenon did not significantly affect visual acuity. It provides long-term good anatomical and functional results, especially in cases where insufficient ILM or lens capsule are left.

Myricetin is a common plant-derived flavonoid, considered an agonist of glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor. It improves glycemic control and helps reduce body weight in diabetic subjects. The potential mechanisms of action of myricetin in this context might be enhancing the secretion of ß-endorphin (BER) to activate peripheral µ-opioid receptors. Moreover, adropin is a nutritionally regulated peptide hormone, which regulates energy metabolism, and plays a role in ameliorating diabetes. Because their mechanisms of insulin sensitivity are closely related, we hypothesized that myricetin may interact with adropin and plasma BER. The present study investigated the glucose-lowering effect of acute and chronic treatments of myricetin in type-1 diabetic rats. Plasma BER and adropin levels were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The secretion of BER was measured in rats who received adrenalectomy. The changes in adropin gene (Enho) or mRNA level of GLP-1 receptor were measured using qPCR analysis. The results showed that myricetin dose-dependently increased plasma BER and adropin levels like the reduction of hyperglycemia after bolus injection as acute treatment. In addition, these effects of myricetin were inhibited by the antagonist of GLP-1 receptor. Moreover, in HepG2 cell line, myricetin induced GLP-1 receptor activation, which modulated the expression of adropin. In diabetic rats, the plasma adropin increased by myricetin is mainly through endogenous ß-endorphin after activation of GLP-1 receptor via bolus injection as acute treatment. Additionally, chronic treatment with myricetin increased adropin secretion in diabetic rats. In conclusion, our results provide a new finding that activation of opioid µ-receptor in the liver may enhance circulating adropin in animals.
