RESUMO

Autoantibodies against apolipoprotein A-I (ApoA-I) are associated with cardiovascular disease risks. We aimed to examine the 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal (HNE) modification of ApoA-I in coronary artery disease (CAD) and evaluate the potential risk of autoantibodies against their unmodified and HNE-modified peptides. We assessed plasma levels of ApoA-I, HNE-protein adducts, and autoantibodies against unmodified and HNE-peptide adducts, and significant correlations and odds ratios (ORs) were examined. Two novel CAD-specific HNE-peptide adducts, ApoA-I251-262 and ApoA-I70-83, were identified. Notably, immunoglobulin G (IgG) anti-ApoA-I251-262 HNE, IgM anti-ApoA-I70-83 HNE, IgG anti-ApoA-I251-262, IgG anti-ApoA-I70-83, and HNE-protein adducts were significantly correlated with triglycerides, creatinine, or high-density lipoprotein in CAD with various degrees of stenosis (<30% or >70%). The HNE-protein adduct (OR = 2.208-fold, p = 0.020) and IgM anti-ApoA-I251-262 HNE (2.046-fold, p = 0.035) showed an increased risk of progression from >30% stenosis in CAD. HNE-protein adducts and IgM anti-ApoA-I251-262 HNE may increase the severity of CAD at high and low levels, respectively.

RESUMO

Projectors have become one major medium in modern teaching, with large area-size displays emerging as an alternative. What concerns the general public is whether such eLearning would impose threat on eyes, by noting blue enriched white light to be hazardous to retina and else. Especially, little was known about their permissible viewing time under a certain viewing clarity. We had hence carried out a quantitative study with the use of a blue-hazard quantification spectrometer to determine the permissible viewing time when using a projector and a large size TV screen for displaying. Surprisingly, the large TV screen could permit a much longer viewing time, meaning which is more eye-friendly. It is plausibly because its resolution is much higher than that of the projector. Two dilemmas were observed in such eLearning; those sitting in the front would suffer a much higher illuminance, leading to a much shorter viewing time, while those sitting in the back would need a far much larger font size to see clearly. To ensure both viewing clarity and a sufficiently long permissible viewing time, orange text on black background is suggested to replace the defaulted black text on white background. The permissible viewing time could hence drastically increase from 1.3 to 83 h at 2 m by viewing a 30 pt font for the TV and from 0.4 to 54 h for the projection. At 6 m, the permissible viewing time was increased from 12 to 236 h for the TV and from 3 to 160 h for the projection, based on a viewable 94 pt font. These results may help educators and other e-display users to wisely apply the display tools with safety.

RESUMO

Sesamol (SEM), a lignan from sesame oil, exhibited potential benefits on obesity treatment by promoting browning of adipocytes, and the current study is aimed to explore the molecular mechanisms of SEM from the aspect of systemic liver-adipose crosstalk that mediated by hepatic fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21). Our in vivo data showed that SEM induced energy expenditure and white adipose tissue (WAT) browning by increasing the expression level of uncoupling protein-1 in high fat diet induced obese C57BL/6J mice. Elevated levels of circulating FGF21 associated with the increased expression of hepatic FGF21 were observed after SEM intervention. Simultaneously, the increased adipose fibroblast growth factor tyrosine kinase receptor 1/beta-klotho indicated that FGF21 sensitivity was enhanced by SEM in WAT. Furthermore, our in vitro results from HepG2 and 3T3-L1 cell lines confirmed the effects and revealed the mechanism of SEM on the white adipocytes browning. We found that with the specific inhibitors of PPARα, the SEM-mediated hepatic FGF21 expression was decreased, and with the specific inhibitors of PPARγ, the browning effect of adipocytes by SEM combining with FGF21 was significantly suppressed. Taken together, the mechanism of SEM for inducing the WAT browning might be the modulation of SEM on liver-adipose crosstalk mediated by FGF21, and the PPARs family might be the targets of SEM. The novel findings from the present study provided evidence that SEM could be a potent obesity-treating compound.

RESUMO

Long exposure to intensive artificial light imposes threats to the retina. It is crucial to know the permissible exposure time to prevent photoretinitis. One complicated quantification method is available, which, however, also requires instrumentally measured spectrum and illuminance. We present herein an easy-to-apply formula and a ready-to-use table derived therefrom to determine the permissible exposure limit for any given desk lamp at any viewing distance. One only needs to acquire its color temperature and luminous flux labeled on the product. The method can be used to assist the general public in quickly assessing the potential hazardous status of their desk lamps, if any, and guide the field experts in designing human-eye-friendly lighting.

RESUMO

Obesity can evoke changes of skeletal muscle structure and function, which are characterized by the conversion of myofiber from type I to type II, leading to a vicious cycle of metabolic disorders. Reversing the muscle fiber-type conversion in obese states is a novel strategy for treating those with obesity. Sesamol, a food ingredient compound isolated from sesame seeds, exerted potential antiobesity effects. The present research aimed to explore the therapeutic effects of sesamol on obesity-related skeletal muscle-fiber-type conversion and elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms through utilizing a high-fat-diet-induced obese C57BL/6J mice model and palmitic acid-exposed C2C12 myotubes. The results showed that sesamol attenuated obesity-related metabolic disturbances, elevated exercise endurance of obese mice, and decreased lipid accumulation and insulin resistance in skeletal muscle. After the treatment with sesamol, the muscular mitochondrial content and biogenesis were increased, accompanied by the enzyme activities and myosin heavy-chain isoform changed from type II fiber to type I fiber. Mechanistic studies revealed that the effects of sesamol on reversing skeletal muscle-fiber-type conversion in obese states were associated with the stimulation of the muscular sirtuin 1 (SIRT1)/AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signal pathway, and these effects could be inhibited by a specific inhibitor of SIRT1, EX-527. In conclusion, our research provided novel evidence that sesamol could regulate myofiber-type conversion to treat obesity and obesity-related metabolic disorders by stimulating the muscular SIRT1/AMPK signal pathway.

RESUMO

Given the relentless renewal ability of intestinal crypt-base stem cells, small intestine in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is more vulnerable to radiation-induced disruption. Through promoting epithelial integrity and reducing intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) have been proved to exhibit radioprotective effects in the GI tract. Therefore, enhancing stability or transcriptional activity of HIFs might be a therapeutic strategy for developing radioprotectors. Factor inhibiting HIF (FIH or HIF-1AN) can hamper transcriptional capacity of HIF-1α via interacting with Asn803 in its C-terminal domain. Previously, we discovered promoting HIF-1α transcriptional activity in vitro by FIH inhibitor-N-oxalyl-D-phenylalanine (NOFD) exerts radioprotection on cells. However, the radioprotective effect of FIH inhibitor on the GI tract and its competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) regulatory network from the FIH/HIF axis has never been addressed. Here we verified radioprotection of NOFD for the GI tract by an animal model and performed whole-transcriptome analysis to fully elucidate the radioprotective mechanism from the FIH/HIF axis against GI syndrome. We identified two novel circular RNAs (circRNAs) (circRNA_2909 and circRNA_0323) and two long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) (NONMMUT140549.1 and NONMMUT148249.1) that promote expression of HIF1A and NOS2 in the HIF-1 pathway by sponging microRNAs (miRNAs), especially mmu-miR-92a-1-5p. The de-repression of HIF-1α transcriptional capacity by inhibiting FIH proteomic activity suggests a new therapeutic strategy in alleviating radiation-induced GI syndrome.

RESUMO

Machine learning (ML) algorithms have been applied to predicting coronary artery disease (CAD). Our purpose was to utilize autoantibody isotypes against four different unmodified and malondialdehyde (MDA)-modified peptides among Taiwanese with CAD and healthy controls (HCs) for CAD prediction. In this study, levels of MDA, MDA-modified protein (MDA-protein) adducts, and autoantibody isotypes against unmodified peptides and MDA-modified peptides were measured with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). To improve the performance of ML, we used decision tree (DT), random forest (RF), and support vector machine (SVM) coupled with five-fold cross validation and parameters optimization. Levels of plasma MDA and MDA-protein adducts were higher in CAD patients than in HCs. IgM anti-IGKC76-99 MDA and IgM anti-A1AT284-298 MDA decreased the most in patients with CAD compared to HCs. In the experimental results of CAD prediction, the decision tree classifier achieved an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.81; the random forest classifier achieved an AUC of 0.94; the support vector machine achieved an AUC of 0.65 for differentiating between CAD patients with stenosis rates of 70% and HCs. In this study, we demonstrated that autoantibody isotypes imported into machine learning algorithms can lead to accurate models for clinical use.

RESUMO

For highly conserved mammalian protein, chicken is a suitable immune host to generate antibodies. Monoclonal antibodies have been successfully targeted with immunity checkpoint proteins as a means of cancer treatment; this treatment enhances tumor-specific immunity responses through immunoregulation. Studies have identified the importance of B7-H4 in immunoregulation and its use as a potential target for cancer treatment. High levels of B7-H4 expression are found in tumor tissues and are associated with adverse clinical and pathological characteristics. Using the phage display technique, this study isolated specific single-chain antibody fragments (scFvs) against B7-H4 from chickens. Our experiment proved that B7-H4 clearly induced the inhibition of T-cell activation. Therefore, use of anti-B7-H4 scFvs can effectively block the exhaustion of immunity cells and also stimulate and activate T-cells in peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Sequence analysis revealed that two isolated scFv S2 and S4 have the same VH complementarity-determining regions (CDRs) sequence. Molecule docking was employed to simulate the complex structures of scFv with B7-H4 to analyze the interaction. Our findings revealed that both scFvs employed CDR-H1 and CDR-H3 as main driving forces and had strong binding effects with the B7-H4. The affinity of scFv S2 was better because the CDR-L2 loop of the scFv S2 had three more hydrogen bond interactions with B7-H4. The results of this experiment suggest the usefulness of B7-H4 as a target for immunity checkpoints; the isolated B7-H4-specific chicken antibodies have the potential for use in future cancer immunotherapy applications.

RESUMO

Reasonable irrigation is still lacking for potato production in the sandy areas of Yulin, northern Shaanxi Province. To solve this problem, field drip fertigation was conducted to examine the growth, yield and quality of potato during the whole growing season. We further analyzed the responses of these indices to different irrigation frequencies and amounts. There were three irrigation frequencies (d), i.e. 4 (D1), 8 (D2) and 10 (D3), and three irrigation amounts, i.e. 60%ETc (W1), 80%ETc(W2) and 100%ETc(W3), where ETc was the crop water requirement, resulting in a total of nine treatments. Under the same irrigation frequency, plant height, leaf area index, dry matter, tuber yield and economic benefits of W3 were higher than those of W1 and W2. W1 had the highest irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE), while water use efficiency was not significantly affected by irrigation amount. The average tuber yield of W3 was 43442 kg·hm-2, which was 23.3% and 11.6% higher than that of W1 and W2, respectively. The net income of W3 was 23492 yuan·hm-2, which was 40.4% and 18.7% higher than that of W1 and W2, respectively. Tubers from W3 had the highest starch and vitamin C contents but the lowest reducing sugar content, which were 14.4%, 18.54 mg·(100 g)-1 FW and 0.7%, respectively. At the same irrigation amount, tuber yield, IWUE, starch and vitamin C contents of D1 were the highest, but the reducing sugar content was the lowest at the low and medium irrigation amounts. At the high irrigation amount, D2 had the highest tuber yield, IWUE, net income, starch and vitamin C contents but the lowest reducing sugar content, which were 46572 kg·hm-2, 23.04 kg·m-3, 26,622 yuan·hm-2,14.6%, 19.53 mg·(100 g)-1 FW and 0.7%, respectively. Based on the interacting effects of drip irrigation frequency and amount, both yield and quality of D2W3 reached the maximum. Results from the principal component analysis showed that D2W3 had the highest score. D2W3(8 d, 100%ETc) had the greatest yield and quality and relatively higher water use efficiency, which was thus considered as the optimal combination of drip irrigation frequency and amount. The results could provide a scientific basis for the drip irrigation scheduling design for high-yield, high-efficiency and high-quality potato production in the sandy areas of Yulin, northern Shaanxi.

RESUMO

AIMS: Prediabetes and diabetes are associated with increased insulin resistance and decreased insulin production, dyslipidemia, and increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Our goals were to assess lipoprotein subfractions using novel assays in such subjects. METHODS: Fasting normal, prediabetic, and diabetic Taiwanese men and women (n=2,049) had their serum glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin, insulin, total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), HDL3-C, apolipoprotein E-HDL-C, direct low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), small dense LDL-C (sdLDL-C), LDL-TG, and remnant lipoprotein cholesterol (RLP-C) levels measured using novel assays. HDL2-C, LDL-C, and large-buoyant LDL-C (lbLDL-C) were calculated. RESULTS: Prediabetic male and female subjects had significantly higher levels of TG, RLP-C, sdLDL-C, the sdLDL-C/LDL-C ratio, and LDL-TG than normal subjects, and statin treatment abolished this effect in men, but not in women. Diabetic male and female subjects had significantly higher TG and sdLDL-C/LDL-C ratios, and significantly lower levels of HDL-C, HDL2-C, HDL3-C, and apoE HDL-C than normal subjects, as did prediabetic women. Median direct LDL-C levels were >100 mg/dL in all groups, even in those receiving statin therapy. Calculated LDL-C significantly underestimated direct LDL-C by >10% in diabetic subjects. CONCLUSIONS: Our data indicate that prediabetic subjects were more likely to have significantly elevated RLP-C, sdLDL-C, and LDL-TG, while diabetic subjects were more likely to have significantly decreased HDL-C, HDL2-C, HDL3-C, and apoE HDL-C than normal subjects, and calculated LDL-C significantly underestimated their direct LDL-C. In our view, direct LDL-C and sdLDL-C should be measured and optimized in both diabetic and prediabetic subjects to reduce CVD risk.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Glycated albumin (GA) values reflect an average plasma glucose level over approximately 2-4 weeks, and the assay is stable and can be run on serum or plasma. The aim of this study was to determine the universality and the clinical utility of GA in screening for diabetes mellitus. METHODS: Subjects consisted of 2192 male and female residents in Yi-lan County, Northern Taiwan (mean age 60.1 years), of whom 54.2% (n = 1188) had previously been diagnosed and treated for diabetes. Fasting blood samples were obtained to measure HbA1c, plasma glucose, serum GA, insulin, and measures of kidney and liver function. The reference values for these parameters were determined. Data from patients with diabetes and non-diabetic controls were also compared. RESULTS: Mean GA values were 13.8% in controls and 18.1% in diabetic subjects (31.2% higher, p < 0.0001), while mean HbA1c values were 5.6% in controls and 7.2% in diabetic subjects (29.2% higher, p < 0.0001). The 95th percentile values for GA and HbA1c in controls were 16.1% and 6.2%, respectively. Our suggested GA and HbA1c cut-points for prediabetes at the 75th percentile of the normal population would be 14.6% and 5.8%, respectively. For both parameters, values greater than these cut-points provided a reasonable degree of specificity and sensitivity for risk of having diabetes, while a GA value of 16.5% corresponds to an HbA1c level of 6.5%, diagnostic of diabetes. CONCLUSION: These data indicate that GA values can be used as a surrogate parameter for HbA1c in screening for prediabetes and diabetes mellitus.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Chronic heart failure (CHF) is a condition that is daily confronted by clinicians in a variety of medical specialties, where physicians routinely seek optimum pharmacotherapy for their outpatients with CHF. We conducted a population- based study on pharmacotherapy for outpatients with CHF in Taiwan from 2000 to 2010, which focused on drug prescription patterns of different physician specialties. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrieved records from the National Health Insurance Research Database of patient ambulatory visits with diagnosed chronic heart failure, when cardiovascular drugs were prescribed. For purposes of this study, anti-chronic heart failure drugs were separated into categories: mortality reducing agents (angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, ß-blockers, spironolactone, hydralazine plus nitrates) and symptom-relieving agents (digoxin, diuretics). Thereafter, the trends of prescription patterns related to different physician specialties were analyzed. RESULTS: From 2000 to 2010, the prescription rate of any mortality-reducing agent for CHF outpatients rose from 61.5% to 76.3% while the concomitant rate for digoxin decreased from 47.3% to 45.4%. Compared to internists and family physicians, cardiologists not only prescribed far more mortality-reducing agents from 2000 to 2010 (53.9 - 72.7%, 54.1 - 64.3%, 74.7 - 84.4%, respectively), but also prescribed two or three mortality-reducing drugs. CONCLUSION: There was a significant improvement of optimal pharmacotherapy for chronic heart failure in Taiwan. We observed that cardiologists were more aggressive than non-cardiologists when deciding whether to prescribe mortality-reducing drugs for heart failure management. However, those factors which influence the prescription patterns of internists and family physicians for their patients with CHF still require additional research.

RESUMO

Endophytes play an important role in protection of host plants from infection by phytopathogens. Endophytic bacteria were isolated from five different parts (root, stem, petiole, leaf and seed) of Panax notoginseng and evaluated for antagonistic activity against Fusarium oxysporum, Ralstonia sp. and Meloidogyne hapla, three major pathogens associated with root-rot disease complex of P. notoginseng. From 1000 endophytic bacterial strains evaluated in vitro, 104 strains exhibited antagonistic properties against at least one of these three pathogens. Phylogenetic analyses of their 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that these 104 antagonistic bacteria belong to four clusters: Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes/Chlorobi. Members of the Firmicutes, in particular the Bacillus spp., were predominant in all analyzed tissues. The root was the main reservoir for antagonistic bacteria. Of the 104 antagonists, 51 strains showed antagonistic activities to one pathogen only, while 43 and 10 displayed the activities towards two and all three pathogens, respectively. The most dominant species in all tissues were Bacillus amyloliquefaciens subsp. plantarum and Bacillus methylotrophicus, which were represented by eight strains with broad antagonistic spectrum to the all three test pathogens of root-rot disease complex of P. notoginseng.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Both activin A, a member of transforming growth factor beta superfamily, and its inhibitor follistatin have been shown to be overexpressed in various cancers. We examined the potential role of activin A and follistatin in tissue and blood samples from patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma. METHODS: For activin A and follistatin, the expression of tissue samples from 92 patients was examined by immunohistochemical study, and the serum levels of blood samples from 111 patients and 91 healthy controls were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS: We found that overexpression of immunohistochemically detected activin A was correlated with positive N stage, poor histological differentiation, and perineural invasion (P = 0.029, 0.002, and 0.014, respectively). In survival analyses, patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma, whose tumors overexpressed activin A, had a worse prognosis for overall survival and disease-free survival (P = 0.009 and 0.007). However, expression of follistatin in tumor was not correlated with overall survival or disease-free survival. Serum activin A and follistatin levels in 111 untreated patients were neither significantly different from those of 91 control samples nor associated with any clinicopathological manifestations. In vitro suppression of activin A expression in OC3 cells using specific interfering RNA-attenuated cell proliferation, migration, and invasiveness. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that activin A overexpression in oral squamous cell carcinomas is associated with patients' survival and may contribute to tumor progression and metastasis.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated associations between the histological differentiation of oral squamous cell carcinoma and additional clinicopathological manifestations, adverse events after treatment, and the outcomes of patients in a region prevalent for betel quid chewing. STUDY DESIGN: Case series with chart review. SETTING: Tertiary referral center. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A total of 150 patients with primary oral squamous cell carcinomas who underwent surgery with or without adjuvant therapy were enrolled. RESULTS: Well, moderate, and poorly differentiated oral squamous cell carcinomas were reported in 54 (36%), 84 (56%), and 12 (8%) patients, respectively. There were no significant differences among different histological differentiations in age, sex, tumor, node, metastasis stage, bone invasion, depth of invasion, and history of carcinogen exposure. However, we found significant associations between tumor histological differentiation and nodal metastasis (P < 0.0001), extracapsular spread (P = 0.002), and perineural invasion (P < 0.0001). In the analysis of adverse events for survival during patient follow-up, oral squamous cell carcinomas with poor differentiation had a higher probability of developing neck recurrence (P = 0.001) and distant metastasis (P = 0.019), but not local recurrence or a second primary cancer. For survival analysis, univariate analysis showed that patient age, tumor stage, extracapsular spread, presence of perineural invasion, and tumor differentiation were significant factors. Multivariate analysis further demonstrated that poor differentiation (P = 0.007) was still a statistically significant factor. CONCLUSION: The current study demonstrates that poorer tumor histological classifications of oral squamous cell carcinoma are significantly associated with positive nodal status, extracapsular spread, perineural invasion of primary tumors, and the probability of developing neck recurrence and distant metastasis after treatment.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study examined compliance with prescribing guidelines for antithrombotic therapy in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) in Taiwan, using the 2001 joint guideline from the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, and European Society of Cardiology. The study also sought to identify factors associated with the appropriate prescribing of antithrombotic therapy. METHODS: Patients with AF were identified by the presence of > or =2 inpatient or outpatient claims with an International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification code of 427.31 in the Taiwanese National Health Insurance claims database between July 1, 2003, and June 30, 2004. Patients were stratified according to their stroke risk (highest, high, low, or lowest) and antithrombotic medication (aspirin, warfarin, ticlopidine/clopidogrel, or none). Based on these categories, rates of prescribed treatments that were compliant with the antithrombotic guidelines were calculated. Antithrombotic therapies were considered guideline compliant when warfarin was prescribed for the highest- or high-risk patients, aspirin was prescribed for low-risk patients, and aspirin or no antithrombotic treatment was prescribed for the lowest-risk patients. Because the role of ticlopidine/clopidogrel in AF remains unclear, prescription of these drugs without aspirin or warfarin was considered noncompliant with the guidelines. RESULTS: Of 39,541 identified patients with AF, 70.3% were at high risk for thromboembolic events and 18.3% were at highest risk; however, only 24.7% of the overall population received appropriate antithrombotic therapy. When patients with risk factors for bleeding were excluded, the rate of compliance increased to 26.2%. Factors that were inversely associated with prescription of warfarin included risk factors for bleeding (cancer, predisposition to falls, previous hemorrhage, history of peptic ulcer, cirrhosis, renal dialysis, and psychiatric disease), hypertension, coronary artery disease, thyrotoxicosis, and age > or =60 years. CONCLUSIONS: Most of these patients with AF in Taiwan did not receive appropriate antithrombotic therapy over the period studied. Bleeding risk factors, hypertension, coronary artery disease, thyrotoxicosis, and older age were associated with low rates of warfarin use.

RESUMO

Uterine myomas are the most common benign tumors in the female reproductive tract. Most women with myomas are asymptomatic. Therefore, expectant observation and follow-up are often recommended for these myoma patients. However, myomas may cause menstrual symptoms, pelvic pain, pressure complaints, subfertility or pregnancy-related complications, with resultant requests for a definitive treatment. The management of myomas has become multidisciplinary in the past 20 years. Basically, the choice of treatment depends on the patient's age, the reason for treatment, the issue of fertility preservation, and the patient's preference. The treatment spectrum includes an expectant management, medical therapy, surgical intervention, uterine artery embolization or ablative techniques. Medical therapy is an option for women with symptomatic myomas who prefer non-surgical treatment, consider fertility preservation, or expect a less aggressive operation after shrinkage of the uterine volume. This review will summarize the recent well-documented drugs for the management of uterine myomas.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To analyze results of percutaneous catheter drainage of large fluid collections in the head and neck region noted in the immediate postoperative period. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-four consecutive patients with 41 large fluid collections in the head and neck detected 7-10 days after oncologic surgery underwent percutaneous catheter drainage. There were 29 men and five women, with a mean age of 52.2 years (95% CI: 47.8-56.7). Each patient had a surgical drain placed in the posterior neck triangle; three patients had low-grade fever and six had diabetes at the time of percutaneous catheter drainage. Conventional management consisting of serial needle aspirations at bedside followed by pressure dressing failed in 15 of 34 patients (44%). Ultrasound-guided drainage was performed and catheters were connected to vacuum balls for continuous suction drainage. RESULTS: The average fluid volume estimated by sonographic measurement was 84 cm(3) (95% CI: 57-112 cm(3)). The fluid content was serosanguinous in 46% (19 of 41), uncoagulated blood in 32% (13 of 41), pus in 15% (six of 41), and saliva in 7% (three of 41). The mean duration of catheter drainage was nine days (95% CI: 7-10 d) and mean fluid drainage was 287 mL (95% CI: 188-387 mL). Ninety-one percent of patients (31 of 34) were successfully treated with initial catheter drainage. Three patients had recurrent fluid collections at the same locations: two were treated with repeated catheter insertions and one required a limited open drainage. No complication related to catheter drainage was noted at 6-month follow-up. CONCLUSION: Percutaneous catheter drainage is effective for large fluid collections in the head and neck region noted in the immediate postoperative period irrespective of contents.
