RESUMO

Background: Bismuth quadruple therapy is currently consensus recommendation for first-line Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) treatment; however, the optimal duration is unknown. We compared the efficacy of 10-day bismuth quadruple therapy with that of 14-day bismuth quadruple therapy for first-line eradication. Methods: For our multicentre, parallel randomised, open-label, and non-inferiority study, we recruited H. pylori treatment-naïve patients from one medical centre and one teaching hospital in Taiwan. Patients were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive 10-day (PBMT-10) or 14-day (PBMT-14) bismuth quadruple therapy. The primary outcome was the eradication rate as determined by intention-to-treat (ITT) and per-protocol (PP) analyses. The eradication rates between the two groups were compared using a one-sided α value of 0.025 and a non-inferiority margin of 7%. The secondary outcomes were the rate of adverse effects. The trial is registered with ClincialTrials.gov (NCT04527055). Findings: From August 3, 2020 to April 28, 2023, 313 H. pylori treatment-naïve patients (PBMT-10 = 157; PBMT-14 = 156) were enrolled. 35 patients were excluded from PP analyses. The eradication rates (95% CI) for PBMT-10 and PBMT-14 were respectively 92.4% (88.2%-96.5%) and 92.9% (88.9%-97.0%) by ITT analyses, and 97.9% (95.5%-100.0%) and 99.3% (97.8%-100.0%) by PP analyses. The eradication rates for PBMT-10 were non-inferior to those for PBMT-14 (absolute difference [lower boundary of the one-sided 97.5% CI] -0.6% [-6.7%], PNI = 0.020 in ITT analyses, -1.4% [-5.8%], PNI = 0.007 in PP analyses). The rates of overall adverse effects (54.1% versus 57.1%, P = 0.604) were similar between the two groups; nevertheless, the rates of dizziness (18.5% versus 34.0%, P = 0.003) and vomiting (4.5% versus 12.8%, P = 0.008) were lower in PBMT-10 than in PBMT-14. Interpretation: The 10-day bismuth quadruple therapy was non-inferior to the 14-day therapy as a first-line treatment for eradicating H. pylori infection and had no different rates of overall adverse effects, but less serious adverse events in terms of dizziness and vomiting. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Metabolic Dysfunction-associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) has become a global epidemic, and air pollution has been identified as a potential risk factor. This study aims to investigate the non-linear relationship between ambient air pollution and MASLD prevalence. METHOD: In this cross-sectional study, participants undergoing health checkups were assessed for three-year average air pollution exposure. MASLD diagnosis required hepatic steatosis with at least 1 out of 5 cardiometabolic criteria. A stepwise approach combining data visualization and regression modeling was used to determine the most appropriate link function between each of the six air pollutants and MASLD. A covariate-adjusted six-pollutant model was constructed accordingly. RESULTS: A total of 131,592 participants were included, with 40.6% met the criteria of MASLD. "Threshold link function," "interaction link function," and "restricted cubic spline (RCS) link functions" best-fitted associations between MASLD and PM2.5, PM10/CO, and O3 /SO2/NO2, respectively. In the six-pollutant model, significant positive associations were observed when pollutant concentrations were over: 34.64 µg/m3 for PM2.5, 57.93 µg/m3 for PM10, 56 µg/m3 for O3, below 643.6 µg/m3 for CO, and within 33 and 48 µg/m3 for NO2. The six-pollutant model using these best-fitted link functions demonstrated superior model fitting compared to exposure-categorized model or linear link function model assuming proportionality of odds. CONCLUSION: Non-linear associations were found between air pollutants and MASLD prevalence. PM2.5, PM10, O3, CO, and NO2 exhibited positive associations with MASLD in specific concentration ranges, highlighting the need to consider non-linear relationships in assessing the impact of air pollution on MASLD.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The global burden of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is rising. An alternative term, metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), instead highlights the associated metabolic risks. This cohort study examined patient classifications under NAFLD and MAFLD criteria and their associations with all-cause mortality. METHODS: Participants who attended a paid health check-up (2012-2015) were included. Hepatic steatosis (HS) was diagnosed ultrasonographically. NAFLD was defined as HS without secondary causes, while MAFLD involved HS with overweight/obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, or ≥2 metabolic dysfunctions. Mortality was tracked via the Taiwan Death Registry until November 30, 2022. RESULTS: Of 118,915 participants, 36.9% had NAFLD, 40.2% had MAFLD, and 32.9% met both definitions. Participants with NAFLD alone had lower mortality, and those with MAFLD alone had higher mortality, than individuals with both conditions. After adjustment for potential confounders, the hazard ratios (HRs) for all-cause mortality were 1.08 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.78 to 1.48) for NAFLD alone and 1.26 (95% CI, 1.09 to 1.47) for MAFLD alone, relative to both conditions. Advanced fibrosis conferred greater mortality risk, with HRs of 1.93 (95% CI, 1.44 to 2.58) and 2.08 (95% CI, 1.61 to 2.70) for advanced fibrotic NAFLD and MAFLD, respectively. Key mortality risk factors for NAFLD and MAFLD included older age, unmarried status, higher body mass index, smoking, diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, and advanced fibrosis. CONCLUSIONS: All-cause mortality in NAFLD and/or MAFLD was linked to cardiometabolic covariates, with risk attenuated after multivariable adjustment. A high fibrosis-4 index score, indicating fibrosis, could identify fatty liver disease cases involving elevated mortality risk.

RESUMO

Objectives: To promote teamwork communication and collaboration between health-care professionals, educators emphasized proper training programs to develop interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) among postgraduate (PG) trainees. A literature review indicated that the faculty necessarily measured the competency in IPCP with structured and applicable assessment tools in collocation to training programs domestically. A cross-sectional psychometric study was conducted to construct a reliable assessment tool for measuring PG learning outcome in Taiwan through a bidirectional translation. The study aimed to assess the interprofessional team behavior of trainees using the Taiwanese version of the collaborative practice assessment tool (T-CPAT). Materials and Methods: The study recruited 43 participants to undergo a PG training program in a single institute and to complete T-CPAT. Data were analyzed using SPSS 22.0 software. We employed descriptive analysis of demographic variables. The validity of T-CPAT was analyzed by experts in different specialties and its availability was assessed by item-level analysis. Furthermore, the T-CPAT reliability was tested using Cronbach's α. Results: The average score was 305.2 (standard deviation = 38.08), and the expert validity of the T-CPAT was 0.96. In the item-level analysis, there were no failure items in T-CAPT. Cronbach's α reached 0.94 (95% confidence interval = 0.90-0.96). Conclusion: The study demonstrated good reliability and validity for the T-CPAT. Thus, the T-CPAT can be used to accurately measure and assess the competence of IPCP in PG trainees in general medicine in Taiwan. The results were deemed sufficient to provide faculties with related arrangements for future teaching plans.

RESUMO

Solar light is a renewable source of energy that can be used and transformed into electricity using clean energy technology. In this study, we used direct current magnetron sputtering (DCMS) to sputter p-type cuprous oxide (Cu2O) films with different oxygen flow rates (fO2) as hole-transport layers (HTLs) for perovskite solar cells (PSCs). The PSC device with the structure of ITO/Cu2O/perovskite/[6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM)/bathocuproine (BCP)/Ag showed a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.91%. Subsequently, a high-power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) Cu2O film was embedded and promoted the device performance to 10.29%. As HiPIMS has a high ionization rate, it can create higher density films with low surface roughness, which passivates surface/interface defects and reduces the leakage current of PSCs. We further applied the superimposed high-power impulse magnetron sputtering (superimposed HiPIMS) derived Cu2O as the HTL, and we observed PCEs of 15.20% under one sun (AM1.5G, 1000 Wm-2) and 25.09% under indoor illumination (TL-84, 1000 lux). In addition, this PSC device outperformed by demonstrating remarkable long-term stability via retaining 97.6% (dark, Ar) of its performance for over 2000 h.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study is aimed toward investigating the evolution of each Correa's step after Helicobacter pylori eradication in a long-term follow-up and exploring the factors correlated with a high-risk of gastric cancer. METHODS: A total of 1824 H. pylori-infected subjects were enrolled to receive screening endoscopy. Among them, 491 received surveillance endoscopy. The patients were divided into Correa's steps I to VI, from normal to gastric cancer. A group-based trajectory model was used to classify patients as persistent high-risk status or not. RESULTS: The prevalence rates of positive corpus-predominant gastritis index (CGI) were 20%-40% in all age groups and Correa's steps IV-V increased >35% after 50 years based on screening endoscopy. Successful eradication of H. pylori regressed CGI after the 1st year-and-thereafter (P < 0.05) and decreased Correa's step progression (Relative risk 0.66 [95% CI 0.49-0.89], P = 0.01); however, it did not regress OLGA and OLGIM. Not only in steps IV-V, but also in step III, the patients had a risk of developing gastric cancer (11.13-76.41 and 4.61 per 1000 person-years). Age (Hazard ratio 1.012 [1.003-1.020], P = 0.01), OLGA stages ≥ I (2.127 [1.558-2.903], P < 0.001), and OLGIM stages ≥ I (1.409 [1.119-1.774], P = 0.004) were correlated independently with a persistent high-risk status. CONCLUSION: The patients in Correa's steps III-V, but not I-II, were at risk of gastric cancer after H. pylori eradication. Age, OLGA stages ≥ I, and OLGIM stages ≥ I were independent factors correlated to a persistent high-risk of gastric cancer. The data may be useful when scheduling surveillance endoscopy for subjects in each Correa's step (NCT04527055).

RESUMO

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) comprise a minimum of five major elements. These alloys show some special characteristics, such as excellent mechanical and high temperature properties. The development of the HEAs requires a knowledge of phase transformations during alloy making procedures. The phase transformations of an Ni36Co18Cr20Fe19Al7 HEA were studied in this research. The alloy underwent hot forging, cold rolling, annealing at and quenching from 1323 K, and isothermal holding at 873 K. The alloy is a single face-centered cubic (FCC) phase in the as-quenched condition. After annealing at 873 K, not only fine coherent L12 particles precipitated homogeneously in the FCC matrix, but lamellae of FCC and L12 phases also developed from the grain boundaries. Both lamellar FCC and L12 grains have a cubic-on-cubic orientation relationship (OR). The composition of the lamellar L12 phase is Ni60Co8Cr6Fe6Al20, and that of the lamellar FCC phase is Ni31Co15Cr28Fe21Al4. Cellular precipitation occurs in the HEA, and the high-temperature FCC (γ) transforms to a lamella of low-temperature FCC (γ1), and an L12 phase, i.e., γ → γ1+L12.

RESUMO

High Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering (HiPIMS) has generated a great deal of interest by offering significant advantages such as high target ionization rate, high plasma density, and the smooth surface of the sputtered films. This study discusses the deposition of copper nitride thin films via HiPIMS at different deposition pressures and then examines the impact of the deposition pressure on the structural and electrical properties of Cu3N films. At low deposition pressure, Cu-rich Cu3N films were obtained, which results in the n-type semiconductor behavior of the films. When the deposition pressure is increased to above 15 mtorr, Cu3N phase forms, leading to a change in the conductivity type of the film from n-type to p-type. According to our analysis, the Cu3N film deposited at 15 mtorr shows p-type conduction with the lowest resistivity of 0.024 Ω·cm and the highest carrier concentration of 1.43 × 1020 cm-3. Furthermore, compared to the properties of Cu3N films deposited via conventional direct current magnetron sputtering (DCMS), the films deposited via HiPIMS show better conductivity due to the higher ionization rate of HiPIMS. These results enhance the potential of Cu3N films' use in smart futuristic devices such as photodetection, photovoltaic absorbers, lithium-ion batteries, etc.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Fecal immunochemical test (FIT) is worldwide strategy for colorectal cancer screening. The subjects with negative FIT still have the risk of an advanced colorectal neoplasia (AN), including adenoma with villous histology, high grade dysplasia or larger than 1 cm in size, or adenocarcinoma. The study determined the risk factors associated with AN in FIT-negative subjects. METHODS: The study included asymptomatic subjects who received health checkup colonoscopy and have provided FIT study within 6 months prior to colonoscopy. The risk factors to have AN in cases with negative FIT were analyzed. The numbers of colonoscopies needed to detect one AN were calculated for the subjects with different risk factors. RESULTS: There were 1411 cases, 85 with positive FIT and 1326 with negative FIT within 6 months before colonoscopy. In FIT positive and FIT negative cases, 45.9% and 34.6% were found to have colorectal adenoma, while 20.2% and 4.6% had AN, respectively. The univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses showed that age more than 50 years old, male sex, smoking history and metabolic syndrome were the significant risk factors to have AN in the FIT negative cases. For cases with negative FIT to have these risk factors, the number of colonoscopies needed to detect one AN was 3.7, lower than 4.5 of the cases with positive FIT. CONCLUSION: For the cases with negative FIT, colonoscopy screening should be considered for those male patients over 50 years old, with a history of smoking and metabolic syndrome to detect AN.

RESUMO

The 7-year medical education program in Taiwan has been established since 1949. More than 60 years later, many medical professionals have observed and voiced its deficiencies following the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome. The deficiencies are three-fold: (1) specialties are excessively institutionalized, (2) students engage in passive learning and memorization, and (3) passing one written national examination serves as the means of granting permanent physician qualification. The situation has aroused concerns and discussions among medical professionals and educators for a new medical education program. Authorized by the Conference of Deans of Medical Schools in Taiwan, Prof. Chyi-Her Lin assembled a team for planning medical curricular reform. Subsequently, Prof. Shan-Chwen Chang organized a task force team which has been monitoring the new 6-year program since 2013. The aims of medical reform by Prof. Lin are (1) to eliminate the specialty training part, (2) to use innovative teaching methods to motivate students to learn proactively, and (3) to implement competency-based medical education. Now, the first class of physicians will enter the workplace in 2019, subject to various clinical challenges.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The long-term outcomes of post-colonoscopy colorectal cancer have varied in previous studies. Our nationwide cohort analysis estimated expected years of life lost to adjust for lead time bias. AIM: We recalculated the long-term outcomes for post-colonoscopy and detected colorectal cancer. METHODS: Patients with colorectal cancer registered in the Taiwan Cancer Registry between 2002 and 2009 were enrolled. The detected group included 22,169 cases of colorectal cancer confirmed within 6 months after a colonoscopy. The post-colonoscopy group included 1653 cancer patients who received a colonoscopy 6-60 months before diagnosis. Patients were followed up until 2011. We simulated age-, sex-, and calendar year-matched referents from life tables in the Taiwan National Vital Statistics using a Monte Carlo method. The life expectancy and expected years of life lost of the cancer patients were obtained from extrapolation of the logit transformation of the survival ratio between the cancer cohorts and the referent groups. RESULTS: Post-colonoscopy colorectal cancer had shorter life expectancies than detected cancer (stages 2-4: 13.6 vs. 16.1 years; 8.7 vs. 12.6 years; 2.1 vs. 4.1 years, p < 0.001). The loss-of-life expectancy did not show this trend after adjusting for lead time bias. Post-colonoscopy colorectal cancer was found at an older age, more often proximal, and was associated with previous endoscopic polypectomy procedures (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Post-colonoscopy colorectal cancer leads to a shorter life expectancy, which appears partially explained by the presence of lead time bias. Quality assurance for colonoscopy and close surveillance for high risk groups would reduce post-colonoscopy colorectal cancer.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Although hepatectomy and liver transplantation surgery for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are effective treatment modalities, the risk of recurrence remains high, particularly in patients with a high number of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) expressing cancer stem/progenitor cell markers. Androgen receptor (AR) signaling has been shown to suppress HCC metastasis in rodent models of HCC. In this study, we investigated whether AR is associated with postoperative HCC recurrence. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: CTCs were obtained from patients with HCC who had undergone hepatectomy to investigate whether they are associated with disease outcome. AR knockout was introduced in two mouse models of spontaneous HCC (carcinogen- and hepatitis B virus-related HCC) to delineate the role that AR plays in HCC recurrence. Biological systems analysis was used to investigate the cellular and molecular mechanisms. RESULTS: We found that the expression of AR in CTCs was negatively associated with HCC recurrence/progression after hepatectomy. Our results suggest that AR-mediated suppression of HCC recurrence/progression is governed by a three-pronged mechanism. First, AR suppresses the expression of CD90 in CTCs by upregulating Histone 3H2A. Second, AR suppresses cell migration at the transcriptome level. Third, AR promotes anoikis of CTCs via dysregulation of cytoskeletal adsorption. CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that AR expression may be the gatekeeper of postoperative HCC recurrence. Therefore, targeting AR in presurgical down-staging procedures may serve as a secondary prevention measure against HCC recurrence in the future.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The relationship between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and cancer remains unclear especially in Asian populations. Therefore, we conducted a nationwide population-based study in Taiwan to reveal the cancer risk in patients with IBD. METHODS: Using the national health database of Taiwan, we identified 3,348 IBD patients without previous cancer, including 685 with Crohn's disease (CD) and 2,663 with ulcerative colitis (UC), as a cohort from 1998 to 2012 and followed them up until 2013. Standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) of overall and site-specific cancers in CD and UC patients in comparison with the general population were analyzed. RESULTS: Regarding overall cancer risk analysis, both CD (SIR 1.4, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.9-2.1) and UC (SIR 0.93, 95% CI 0.7-1.1) patients did not have a higher risk. In site-specific cancer risk analysis, CD (SIR 14.08, P<0.01) and UC (SIR 2.51, P=0.02) patients had a higher risk of hematological malignancies. The risk of colorectal cancer (CRC) did not increase significantly in either CD (SIR 0.96, P=0.7) or UC (SIR 1.39, P=0.22) patients. CONCLUSIONS: This first nationwide population-based study in Asia reveals a significantly higher risk for hematological malignancies in IBD patients. This finding may highlight the importance of screening for hematological malignancies in patients with IBD in the future.

RESUMO

Overlapping offspring occurs when eggs are laid in a nest containing offspring from earlier reproduction. Earlier studies showed that the parentage is not always obvious due to difficulties in field observation and/or alternative breeding tactics. To unveil the parentage between overlapping offspring and parents is critical in understanding oviposition site selection and the reproductive strategies of parents. Amplectant pairs of an arboreal-breeding frog, Kurixalus eiffingeri, lay eggs in tadpole-occupied nests where offspring of different life stages (embryos and tadpoles) coexist. We used five microsatellite DNA markers to assess the parentage between parents and overlapping offspring. We also tested the hypothesis that the male or female frog would breed in the same breeding site because of the scarcity of nest sites. Results showed varied parentage patterns, which may differ from the phenomenon of overlapping egg clutches reported earlier. Parentage analyses showed that only 58 and 25% of the tadpole-occupied stumps were reused by the same male and female respectively, partially confirming our prediction. Re-nesting by the same individual was more common in males than females, which is most likely related to the cost of tadpole feeding and/or feeding schemes of females. On the other hand, results of parentage analyses showed that about 42 and 75% of male and female respectively bred in tadpole-occupied stumps where tadpoles were genetically unrelated. Results of a nest-choice experiment revealed that 40% of frogs chose tadpole-occupied bamboo cups when we presented identical stumps, without or with tadpoles, suggesting that the habitat saturation hypothesis does not fully explain why frogs used the tadpole-occupied stumps. Several possible benefits of overlapping offspring with different life stages were proposed. Our study highlights the importance of integrating molecular data with field observations to better understand the reproductive biology and nest site selection of anuran amphibians.

RESUMO

The management of acute cholecystitis is still based on clinical expertise. This study aims to investigate whether the outcome of acute cholecystitis can be related to the severity criteria of the Tokyo guidelines and additional clinical comorbidities. A total of 103 patients with acute cholecystitis were retrospectively enrolled and their medical records were reviewed. They were all classified according to therapeutic modality, including early cholecystectomy and antibiotic treatment with or without percutaneous cholecystostomy. The impact of the Tokyo guidelines and the presence of comorbidities on clinical outcome were assessed by univariate and multivariate regression analyses. According to Tokyo severity grading, 48 patients were Grade I, 31 patients were Grade II, and 24 patients were Grade III. The Grade III patients had a longer hospital stay than Grade II and Grade I patients (15.2 days, 9.2 days, and 7.3 days, respectively, p < 0.05). According to multivariate analysis, patients with Grade III Tokyo severity, higher Charlson's Comorbidity Score, and encountering complications had a longer hospital stay. Based on treatment modality, surgeons selected the patients with less severity and fewer comorbidities for cholecystectomy, and these patients had a shorter hospital stay. In addition to the grading of the Tokyo guidelines, comorbidities had an additional impact on clinical outcomes and should be an important consideration when making therapeutic decisions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Patients with high Rockall scores have increased risk of ulcer rebleeding after 3-day esomeprazole infusions. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether double oral esomeprazole given after a 3-day esomeprazole infusion decreases ulcer rebleeding for patients with high Rockall scores. DESIGN: We prospectively enrolled 293 patients with peptic ulcer bleeding who had achieved endoscopic haemostasis. After a 3-day esomeprazole infusion, patients with Rockall scores ≥6 were randomised into the oral double-dose group (n=93) or the oral standard-dose group (n=94) to receive 11 days of oral esomeprazole 40 mg twice daily or once daily, respectively. The patients with Rockall scores <6 served as controls (n=89); they received 11 days of oral esomeprazole 40 mg once daily. Thereafter, all patients received oral esomeprazole 40 mg once daily for two more weeks until the end of the 28-day study period. The primary end point was peptic ulcer rebleeding. RESULTS: Among patients with Rockall scores ≥6, the oral double-dose group had a higher cumulative rebleeding-free proportion than the oral standard-dose group (p=0.02, log-rank test). The proportion of patients free from recurrent bleeding during the 4th-28th day in the oral double-dose group remained lower than that of the group with Rockall scores <6 (p=0.03, log-rank test). Among patients with Rockall scores ≥6, the rebleeding rate was lower in the oral double-dose group than in the oral standard-dose group (4th-28th day: 10.8% vs 28.7%, p=0.002). CONCLUSIONS: Double oral esomeprazole at 40 mg twice daily after esomeprazole infusion reduced recurrent peptic ulcer bleeding in high-risk patients with Rockall scores ≥6. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Upper abdominal sonography can help physicians to confirm the diagnosis of various hepatobiliary diseases. Teaching sonography skills to medical students is important because it may enhance their level of knowledge and overall development during their gastroenterology section rotation. Sonographic imaging is abstract and students can be easily confused when scanning the abdominal structures from different sites and directions. We used several modern teaching strategies to facilitate the learning of sonography skills. METHODS: The year five medical students beginning a gastroenterology section rotation for their first-year clerkship were taught abdominal sonography skills. Abstract sonographic images were related to concrete objects and the surrounding structures were further indicated. Each of the images was given a specific name and was sorted according to the scanning site. A mnemonics system was designed to help students to memorize the names of these images. A badge was created to recognize the achievement of being able to complete a basic upper abdominal sonography. Students were free (i.e., not obligated) to request a demonstration opportunity to show their skills within 2 weeks after receiving tutelage. We recorded the number of students who received training and were able to successfully complete the task; these individuals then received a badge to be pinned onto their white coats. RESULTS: Sixty-three of 68 students (92.6%) requested evaluation and all of them passed. CONCLUSION: We have greatly simplified the process of learning about upper abdominal sonography by using andragogy to enhance learning, mnemonics to help memory, and a pin-badge reward system to stimulate incentives.

RESUMO

We investigated whether the RT3 accelerometer can be used to discriminate and characterize the different levels of shoulder physical activity (SPA) in both patients and healthy adults. Twenty healthy adults and 20 patients with shoulder disorders (SDs) performed activities at 5 levels of difficulty (easy, easy-moderate, moderate, hard-moderate, hard) with the same RT3 accelerometer fixed on the arm. The Vector Magnitude (VM) is the square root of the sum of squares from each axis to determine the overall magnitude of activity. The SPA counts of healthy group were significantly higher than the patient group in every level except easy (31-38 VM counts difference, p < 0.01). For both groups, the hard task demonstrated higher counts as compared to the other tasks. The easy task showed lower counts as compared to the other tasks. In the patient group, significant correlation between FLEX-SF scores and counts from the RT3 (R = -0.72, p < 0.05) was found in the moderate tasks. The results of this study showed that RT3 can be a potential measurement tool to (1) characterize the difference of SPA between two groups; and (2) partially discriminate the different levels of SPA. The correlations between self-reported function scores and SPA RT3 counts are dependent on self-reported task difficulty.
