RESUMO

AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different treatment modalities for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain and their relevance to chronic cervical pain after 12 months. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: This was a randomized controlled trial. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-eight participants with chronic cervical and TMJ pain were selected using research diagnostic criteria and randomized into four groups (n = 12), which included control, soft splints, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), and low-level laser (LLL). The cervical and TMJ pain was recorded using visual analog scale (VAS) scores at baseline, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months. Occlusal equilibration was done for all groups except for the control. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED: The mean pain scores were statistically analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and posthoc test. RESULTS: The mean VAS scores in TMJ pain patients between the four groups at baseline and at final follow-up were 7.27 ± 1.29 in Group 1, 7.53 ± 0.70 in Group 2, 7.76 ± 0.80 in Group 3, and 7.61 ± 0.61 in Group 4. The mean difference between Groups 1 and 3, Groups 1 and 4, and Groups 2 and 3 was statistically significant (P < 0.00). Pearson correlation test yielded a mild and negative correlation between TMJ and cervical pain. CONCLUSION: TENS and LLL were found to be equally effective in reducing pain in the jaw joint region, followed by soft splints, and there was no correlation between TMJ and cervical pain.

Aim: The aim was to evaluate and compare the cell viability, tear bond strength, and shore hardness of MDX4-4210 silicone reinforced with titanium dioxide and silver nanoparticles in 1%, 2%, and 3%. Settings and Design: The study design involves in vitro comparative study. Materials and Methods: MDX4-4210 silicone incorporated with 1%, 2%, and 3% by weight of silver and titanium dioxide nanoparticles. A total of 112 specimens were prepared and grouped into 7, with 16 specimens in each group. Group 1 - control, Groups 2, 3, and 4 were 1%, 2%, and 3% silver, respectively. Groups 5, 6, and 7 were 1%, 2%, and 3% titanium dioxide nanoparticles, respectively. Cell viability was tested by MTT ASSAY on MG63 cell lines, tear bond strength was tested by peeling force in universal testing machine, and Shore A hardness was tested in durometer. Statistical Analysis Used: The cell viability values were statistically analysed using one-way analysis of variance, and Tukey honestly significant difference test, tear bond strength and shore hardness values were analysed using Mann-Whitney test. Results: Based on the MTT ASSAY test, 1% silver nanoparticles incorporated MDX4-4210 silicone showed maximum cell viability of 42.10%, whereas minimum cell viability was 18.06% for 3% of titanium dioxide-reinforced silicone. The mean value of tear bond strength of 1% silver and 1% titanium dioxide nanoparticles reinforced room temperature vulcanized maxillofacial silicone were 62.81 ± 3.637 N/m and 59.69 ± 5.313 N/m and the mean value of shore hardness of room temperature vulcanized of 1% silver and 1% titanium dioxide nanoparticles reinforced room temperature vulcanized maxillofacial silicone were 38.06 ± 1.237 and 36.75 ± 1.291. Conclusion: Cell viability of 1% silver nanoparticles reinforced MDX4-4210 silicone was higher in comparison to the other groups, and tear bond strength and shore hardness were significantly higher in 1% silver nanoparticles reinforced silicone compared to 1% titanium nanoparticles reinforced MDX4-4210 silicone.

BACKGROUND: Dental ceramics exhibit good optical and esthetic properties due to their translucency. Feldspathic ceramic is the most widely used veneering ceramic with brittleness, which accounts for most of its failure. Hence, this study was done to evaluate and compare the flexural strength of feldspathic ceramic reinforced with zirconia-silica nanofibers in the ratio of 2.5, 5, and 7.5 wt% with conventional feldspathic ceramic. MATERIALS AND METHODS: According to ISO 6872, a master die was prepared from which resin bars were fabricated with 4.0 mm in width × 1.2 mm thickness × 25.0 mm length, Zirconia-silica nanofibers were produced by sol-gel electrospinning go around with calcination and blended with feldspathic ceramic through ball milling method. The samples were prepared with 0, 2.5, 5, 7.5 wt% nanofibers reinforced ceramic. The flexural strength of the samples was evaluated using three-point bending test. RESULTS: The flexural strength values of zirconia-silica nanofibers reinforced ceramic groups were higher than control group. There was a gradual increase in the flexural strength values of felspathic ceramic groups with increase in wt% of nanofibers. CONCLUSION: The flexural strength of feldspathic ceramic samples reinforced with zirconia-silica nanofibers by 5 and 7.5 wt% were statistically significant compared to control, whereas the flexural strength of 2.5 wt% was statistically insignificant compared to the control group.

BACKGROUND: The success of esthetic ceramo-metal restoration is strongly influenced by its bond strength. The success of ceramo-metal restoration is subjective to its bond strength. AIM AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to evaluate the shear bond strength between palladium-based cobalt chromium (Co-Cr) alloy coated with titanium nitride (TiNi) and titanium aluminum nitride with feldspathic ceramics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: According to the International Organization for standardization 9693; technical report 1,140,640 samples were prepared using Palladium-based Co-Cr alloy with ×4 vertical projection resting on 5 mm diameter base. The samples were divided into Group: A (control), Group: B (Sandblasted), Group: C (TiNi coated), and Group: D (titanium aluminum nitride coated by cathodic arc plasma deposition, following which feldspathic ceramic application was performed. Shear bond test was performed using universal testing machine and surface analysis was performed using scanning electron microscope. RESULTS: The mean shear bond strength for Group A was 172.994 ± 3.739 N, Group B 209.485 ± 5.913 N, Group C 176.536 ± 4.780 N, and Group D 260.576 ± 16.351 N. Comparison within the groups was made using one-way ANOVA, and multiple group comparisons were made using Tukey's honestly significant difference Post hoc test where the P < 0.001was considered statistically significant. CONCLUSION: Palladium based Co-Cr alloy coated with titanium aluminum nitride by cathodic plasma arc deposition showed maximum shear bond strength with feldspathic ceramic compared to noncoated, sandblasted, and TiNi coated alloy.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the shade matching capabilities in natural dentitions using Vita Toothguide 3D-Master and an intraoral digital spectrophotometer (Vita Easyshade Advance 4.0) in various light sources. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants between 20 and 40 years old with natural, unrestored right maxillary central incisors, no history of bleaching, orthodontic treatment, or malocclusion and no rotations were included. According to their shades, subjects were randomly selected and grouped into A1, A2, and A3. A total of 100 participants (50 male and 50 female) in each group were chosen for this study. Shade selection was made between 10 am and 2 pm for all light sources. The same examiner selected the shade of natural teeth with Vita Toothguide 3D-Master under natural light within 2 minutes. Once the Vita Toothguide 3D-Masterwas matched with the maxillary right central incisor, the L*, a*, and b* values, chroma, and hue were recorded with Vita Easyshade Advance 4.0 by placing it on the shade tab under the same light source. The values were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD post hoc test with SPSS v22.0 software. RESULTS: The mean ∆E*ab values for shades A1, A2, and A3 for groups 1, 2, and 3 were statistically significantly different from each other (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The intraoral digital spectrophotometer showed statistically significant differences in shade matching compared to Vita Toothguide 3D-Master. Incandescent light showed more accurate shade matching than the filtered LED, LED, and daylight.

RESUMO

Tongue is the only movable muscular organ without any bone in the human body. It has very important role in perception of taste and sensations like touch, pressure, heat and cold. The purpose of the article is to review various types of tongue prosthesis and their clinical applications. This review helps the clinician to choose the appropriate type of tongue prosthesis for different clinical situations, retention of tongue prosthesis and material selection for each type of prosthesis. A broad search of published literature was performed using the keyword glossectomy, glossal prosthesis and tongue prosthesis from 1980 to 2014 in Medline, Google scholar, internet and text book. This review gives basic knowledge of glossal prosthesis and selection of the same for various clinical conditions.

INTRODUCTION: The topographical modifications may vary from millimeter wide grooves to nano size structures. Recently growing nano technology is rapidly advancing surface engineering in implant dentistry. This advancement has resulted in difference in surface properties including the morphology, chemistry, crystal structure and mechanical properties of the implant. AIM: To evaluate the anticandidal effect of titanium, zirconium and aluminium nanoparticles against C. albicans at 24 hours, 72 hours and one week time interval. MATERIALS AND METHODS: According to ISO/TR 11175:1993, the samples were prepared with the dimension of 20mm diameter and 1mm thickness in grade IV titanium. A total of 40 samples were made and the samples were divided into four groups. The samples without coating were Group-A (control), samples coated with titanium nano particles were Group-B, samples coated with zirconium nano particles were Group-C and samples coated with aluminium nano particles were Group-D. The samples were cleaned by sonicating in acetone and subsequently in water three times for 15 min. Then they were treated with TiO2, ZrO2 and Al2O3 nanoparticles. The discs were sterilized under uv radiation and placed in SDA for C.albicans. The colonies were counted in 24, 72 hours and one week intervals. RESULTS: The values were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD Test. Significance p-value was < .001, which showed that significant difference in C.F.U among the groups in titanium coated samples at 24 hours, 72 hours and one week time intervals. CONCLUSION: TiO2 nanoparticles coated titanium plates showed significant anticandidal effect compared to ZrO2 and Al2O3 nanoparticles at 24, 72 hours and one week time interval.

RESUMO

Custom made tray for dental impression is designed to provide a uniform space for the impression material and thereby improve the accuracy of the resultant working cast. Auto-polymerized acrylic resins have been the most commonly used material for the fabrication of these trays. The custom tray produces more accurate and reliable results for inter-abutment distance at the occlusal and gingival level than stock trays. This article describes a modified technique for fabrication of auto-polymerized Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) resin trays.

BACKGROUND: All ceramics are the material of choice for aesthetic tooth replacements. The success of all ceramic restoration depends on the bond between the ceramic and the tooth surface hence this study was done to evaluate the shear bond strength of Feldspathic CAD/CAM ceramic with <5% hydrofluoric acid and hydrofluoric acid combined with silane coupling agent. AIM: To evaluate the shear bond strength of Feldspathic CAD/CAM ceramic with Dentin using bonding agents Prime & Bond NT, XenoIII and surface treatments <5% hydrofluric acid, hydrofluric acid combined with silane coupling agent. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty cylinders with 6mm diameter and 5mm height were milled from CEREC Blocs through CAD/CAM technology. Cerec blocks were bonded to etch freshly extracted tooth surface using a self etch and total etch bonding agent. The samples were divided into 4 groups. Group A1-Ceramic cylinders were treated with < 5% HF and bonded using Prime & Bond NT and Variolink II. Group A2- treated with < 5% HF and silane coupling agent and bonded same as group A1. Group B1- treated with < 5% HF and bonded using Xeno III and Variolink II. Group B2- treated with < 5% HF and silane coupling agent, and bonded same as Group A3. The shear bond strength was evaluated after 24 hours by Storing in distilled water in Instron 3385 universal testing machine with 10-KN force. RESULTS: Statistical analysis was done using student's t-test and Lavene's test. The p-value <0.05 shows significant difference in bond strength between A1 and A2 & B1and B2. CONCLUSION: The application of a silane coupling agent to the ceramic surface after etching with hydrofluoric acid increased the adhesion strength with both bonding agents. Student's t-test revealed a significant effect of silanization.
