RESUMO

The discovery of superconductivity in a d^{9-δ} nickelate has inspired disparate theoretical perspectives regarding the essential physics of this class of materials. A key issue is the magnitude of the magnetic superexchange, which relates to whether cuprate-like high-temperature nickelate superconductivity could be realized. We address this question using Ni L-edge and O K-edge spectroscopy of the reduced d^{9-1/3} trilayer nickelates R_{4}Ni_{3}O_{8} (where R=La, Pr) and associated theoretical modeling. A magnon energy scale of ∼80 meV resulting from a nearest-neighbor magnetic exchange of J=69(4) meV is observed, proving that d^{9-δ} nickelates can host a large superexchange. This value, along with that of the Ni-O hybridization estimated from our O K-edge data, implies that trilayer nickelates represent an intermediate case between the infinite-layer nickelates and the cuprates. Layered nickelates thus provide a route to testing the relevance of superexchange to nickelate superconductivity.

RESUMO

We present the experimental end-station TRIXS dedicated to time-resolved soft x-ray resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments on solid samples at the free-electron laser FLASH. Using monochromatized ultrashort femtosecond XUV/soft x-ray photon pulses in combination with a synchronized optical laser in a pump-probe scheme, the TRIXS setup allows measuring sub-picosecond time-resolved high-resolution RIXS spectra in the energy range from 35 eV to 210 eV, thus spanning the M-edge (M1 and M2,3) absorption resonances of 3d transition metals and N4,5-edges of rare earth elements. A Kirkpatrick-Baez refocusing mirror system at the first branch of the plane grating monochromator beamline (PG1) provides a focus of (6 × 6) µm2 (FWHM) at the sample. The RIXS spectrometer reaches an energy resolution of 35-160 meV over the entire spectral range. The optical laser system based on a chirped pulse optical parametric amplifier provides approximately 100 fs (FWHM) long photon pulses at the fundamental wavelength of 800 nm and a fluence of 120 mJ/cm2 at a sample for optical pump-XUV probe measurements. Furthermore, optical frequency conversion enables experiments at 400 nm or 267 nm with a fluence of 80 and 30 mJ/cm2, respectively. Some of the first (pump-probe) RIXS spectra measured with this setup are shown. The measured time resolution for time-resolved RIXS measurements has been characterized as 287 fs (FWHM) for the used energy resolution.

RESUMO

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the L-edge of transition metal elements is now commonly used to probe single magnon excitations. Here we show that single magnon excitations can also be measured with RIXS at the K-edge of the surrounding ligand atoms when the center heavy metal elements have strong spin-orbit coupling. This is demonstrated with oxygen K-edge RIXS experiments on the perovskite Sr2IrO4, where low energy peaks from single magnon excitations were observed. This new application of RIXS has excellent potential to be applied to a wide range of magnetic systems based on heavy elements, for which the L-edge RIXS energy resolution in the hard x-ray region is usually poor.

RESUMO

We apply the new-generation angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy methodology to the most widely studied cuprate superconductor YBa2Cu3O(6+x). Considering the nodal direction, we found noticeable renormalization effects known as kinks both in the quasiparticle dispersion and scattering rate, the bilayer splitting, and evidence for strong interband scattering--all the characteristic features of the nodal quasiparticles detected earlier in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+delta). The typical energy scale and the doping dependence of the kinks clearly point to their intimate relation with the spin-1 resonance seen in the neutron scattering experiments. Our findings strongly suggest a universality of the electron dynamics in the bilayer superconducting cuprates and a dominating role of the spin fluctuations in the formation of the quasiparticles along the nodal direction.

RESUMO

We studied the neutral electronic excitations of NiO localized at the Ni sites by measuring the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra at the Ni M2,3 edges. The good energy resolution allows an unambiguous identification of several spectral features due to excitations. The dependence of the RIXS spectra on the excitation energy gives evidence of local spin flip and yields a value of 125 +/- 15 meV for the antiferromagnetic exchange interaction. Accurate crystal field parameters are also obtained.

RESUMO

The electronic properties of a series of colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) compounds, namely LaMnO3, La(1-x)Ba(x)(MnO3 (0.2 < or = x < or = 0.55), La(0.76)Ba(0.24)Mn(0.84)Co(0.16)O3, and La(0.76)Ba(0.24)Mn(0.78)Ni(0.22)O3, have been investigated in a detailed spectroscopic study. A combination of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) was used to reveal a detailed picture of the electronic structure in the presence of Ba, Co, and Ni doping in different concentrations. The results are compared with available theory. The valence band of La(1-x)()Ba(x)MnO3 (0 < or = x < or = 0.55) is dominated by La 5p, Mn 3d, and O 2p states, and strong hybridization between Mn 3d and O 2p states is present over the whole range of Ba concentrations. Co-doping at the Mn site leads to an increased occupancy of the e(g) states near the Fermi energy and an increase in the XPS valence band intensity between 0.5 and 5 eV, whereas the Ni-doped sample shows a lower density of occupied states near the Fermi energy. The Ni d states are located in a band spanning the energy range of 1.5-5 eV. XAS spectra indicate that the hole doping leads to mixed Mn 3d-O 2p states. Furthermore, RIXS at the Mn L edge has been used to probe d-d transitions and charge-transfer excitations in La(1-x)Ba(x)MnO3.
