RESUMO

Background: We previously demonstrated the validity of a regression model that included ethnicity as a novel predictor for predicting normative brain volumes in old age. The model was optimized using brain volumes measured with a standard tool FreeSurfer. Objective: Here we further verified the prediction model using newly estimated brain volumes from Neuro I, a quantitative brain analysis system developed for Korean populations. Methods: Lobar and subcortical volumes were estimated from MRI images of 1,629 normal Korean and 786 Caucasian subjects (age range 59-89) and were predicted in linear regression from ethnicity, age, sex, intracranial volume, magnetic field strength, and scanner manufacturers. Results: In the regression model predicting the new volumes, ethnicity was again a substantial predictor in most regions. Additionally, the model-based z-scores of regions were calculated for 428 AD patients and the matched controls, and then employed for diagnostic classification. When the AD classifier adopted the z-scores adjusted for ethnicity, the diagnostic accuracy has noticeably improved (AUC = 0.85, ΔAUC = + 0.04, D = 4.10, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Our results suggest that the prediction model remains robust across different measurement tool, and ethnicity significantly contributes to the establishment of norms for brain volumes and the development of a diagnostic system for neurodegenerative diseases.

RESUMO

Background and Purpose: The SoUth Korea study to PrEvent cognitive impaiRment and protect BRAIN health through lifestyle intervention (SUPERBRAIN) proved the feasibility of multidomain intervention for elderly people. One-quarter of the Korean population over 65 years of age has mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Digital health interventions may be cost-effective and have fewer spatial constraints. We aim to examine the efficacy of a multidomain intervention through both face-to-face interactions and video communication platforms using a tablet personal computer (PC) application in MCI. Methods: Three hundred participants aged 60-85 years, with MCI and at least one modifiable dementia risk factor, will be recruited from 17 centers and randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to the multidomain intervention and the waiting-list control groups. Participants will receive the 24-week intervention through the tablet PC SUPERBRAIN application, which encompasses the following five elements: managing metabolic and vascular risk factors, cognitive training, physical exercise, nutritional guidance, and boosting motivation. Participants will attend the interventions at a facility every 1-2 weeks. They will also engage in one or two self-administered cognitive training sessions utilizing the tablet PC application at home each week. They will participate in twice or thrice weekly online exercise sessions at home via the ZOOM platform. The primary outcome will be the change in the total scale index score of the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status from baseline to study end. Conclusions: This study will inform the effectiveness of a comprehensive multidomain intervention utilizing digital technologies in MCI. Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT05023057.

RESUMO

Alzheimer's disease has recently been classified using three biological markers (amyloid [A], tau [T], and neurodegeneration [N]) to help elucidate its progression. We aimed to investigate whether there were differences between cognitive function and the clinical dementia symptoms over time relative to the ATN classification in the amyloid-negative group. In the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) cohort, 310 participants who underwent all the tests required for ATN classification were enrolled. The cognitive function score differences (Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive Subscale 13 [ADAS-Cog 13], Clinical Dementia Rating Sum of Boxes [CDR-SOB], and Mini-Mental State Examination [MMSE]) between the groups were analyzed using the analysis of covariance and score changes over time with a linear mixed-effects model. In the cross-sectional analysis, ADAS-Cog 13 scores were higher for A-T-N+ and A-T+N+ than for A-T-N- (p<0.001) and A-T+N- (p<0.001). In the longitudinal analysis, CDR-SOB scores for A-T+N+ deteriorated faster than A-T-N- (p<0.001), A-T+N- (p<0.001) and A-T-N+ (p<0.001). Hippocampal atrophy progressed faster in A-T-N+ (p<0.001) and A-T+N+ (p=0.02) than in A-T-N-. Through this study, we discovered that even in individuals classified as amyloid negative, neurodegeneration with tau deposition exacerbates cognitive decline and worsens clinical symptoms, underscoring the need for continuous monitoring and observation.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Beef of Jeju black cattle (JBC) is considered as a healthy meat type due to its significantly higher unsaturated fatty acids (UFA). Lipid (e.g., UFA) is highly susceptible to oxidizing agents, which results in the quality deterioration and economic value loss of meat products. Therefore, development and application of novel preservative techniques is necessary to improve the shelf-life stability of high-UFA beef. The objective of this study was to assess the applicability of chitosan-based coatings in preservation of JBC beef. METHODS: Different coating solutions: 2% chitosan alone, and 2% chitosan containing 0.1% or 0.3% gallic acid were prepared to investigate their applicability in preservation of fresh beef during storage. Jeju black cattle beef (2-cm thick steaks) were non-coated (control) or coated with the above coating solutions, placed on trays, over-wrapped with plastic film and stored at 4°C. The microbiological indices, color, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVBN) and lipid oxidation of the beef were investigated after 1, 10, and 21 days of storage. RESULTS: Coating with 2% chitosan alone reduced the spoilage bacteria count, TVBN and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances levels in the beef compared with control during storage (p<0.05). Noticeably, coating with 2% chitosan containing 0.1% or 0.3% gallic acid was more effective on retardation of spoilage bacteria growth, lipid oxidation and discoloration in the beef compared to the chitosan coating alone over the storage period (21 days) (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Taken together, the combined chitosan and gallic acid coating could be used as a bio-preservative technique in the meat industry.

RESUMO

Introduction: This study aimed to evaluate the implications of supplementary nutrition during the mid-to-late pregnancy on various parameters in Hanwoo cows and their subsequent neonatal calves. Materials and methods: Eight Hanwoo cows in their first parity were divided into two groups. The control group (C, 100%) received 3kg of concentrate and 5kg of rice straw throughout the pregnancy period, while the treatment group (T, 150%) increased their diet during mid-to-late pregnancy. Both performance assessments and blood metabolite analyses were performed for the pregnant cows. Neonatal calves were subjected to morphometric evaluations, blood sampling, and detailed morphometric analyses of carcasses and gastrointestinal components. Results: Performance indices of the cows showed that both Pregnancy Period (PregP) and Body Condition Score (BCS) were significantly improved with supplemental feeding (p <0.05). Improvements in Body Weight (BW) and Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) were not statistically significant. Blood metabolite analysis for the cows revealed decreased levels of triglycerides (TGLate), non-esterified fatty acids (NEFALate), and progesterone (P4Late), with a notable increase in glucose (GluLate) levels (p <0.01). In the neonatal calves, anatomical metrics of the gastrointestinal tissues showed increased Omasum Width (OmasWdth) values in the supplemented group (p =0.053). There was significant increase of papillae and villus lengths in the rumen and small intestine (p <0.01 and p <0.05, respectively). Morphometric evaluations displayed longer body lengths (BLnth) and larger chest width (ChestWdth) in the treated calves (p <0.05 and p <0.01, respectively). Carcass characteristics showed no substantial variations between the groups, while blood analysis in the calves revealed decreased GPT levels in the nutritionally supplemented group (p<0.05). Discussion: The findings indicate that supplementing the diets of Hanwoo cows during mid-to-late pregnancy leads to significant changes in select maternal blood metabolites and influences specific anatomical and morphometric features in neonatal calves, all without significant shifts in carcass attributes.

RESUMO

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is common in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients and can affect the motor symptoms and non-motor symptoms (NMSs) of PD patients. The aim of this study was to identify the clinical factors affected by RLS in patients with PD. We included 369 de novo PD patients. RLS was assessed via face-to-face interviews and the motor symptoms and NMSs of the patients were assessed using relevant scales. RLS frequency in the patients was 12.2% (45/369). PD patients with RLS (PD-RLS) exhibited a greater global Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score than those without RLS (PD-No RLS). PD-RLS exhibited significantly greater scores in the daytime dysfunction and sleep disturbances components of the PSQI than PD-No RLS. PD-RLS exhibited a significantly greater score in the cardiovascular, sleep/fatigue, and attention/memory subdomain of the Non-Motor Symptoms Scale than PD-No RLS. The International RLS Study Group rating scale score was significantly related to PSQI components scores in the sleep disturbances, sleep latency, habitual sleep efficiency, and subjective sleep quality. RLS frequency in de novo PD patients is higher than that in the general population, and the main NMS affected by RLS in these patients is sleep disturbances. Therefore, it is necessary to manage RLS in PD patients with sleep disturbances.

RESUMO

The browning of white adipocytes may be an innovative approach to address obesity. This study investigated the effects of rabbit meat extract on 3T3-L1 adipocytes, with a specific emphasis on inducing browning. The browning effects of rabbit meat extract were evaluated by analyzing genes specifically expressed in 3T3-L1 adipocytes using quantitative PCR and immunoblotting. Rabbit meat extract increased the expression of brown adipocyte-specific markers, UCP1 and PGC1α, and mitochondrial biogenesis factors, TFAM and NRF1, without affecting cell viability in fully differentiated 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Moreover, adipocyte differentiation and the triglyceride content were decreased; hormone-sensitive lipase activity was promoted. Rabbit meat extract activated the AMPK pathway in the differentiated 3T3-L1 cells. However, in adipocytes treated with rabbit meat extract, the expression of genes related to browning was reduced by the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) inhibitor, dorsomorphin dihydrochloride. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to demonstrate that rabbit meat extract induces the browning of white adipocytes via the activation of the AMPK pathway, thereby demonstrating its therapeutic potential in preventing obesity.

RESUMO

Several programs are widely used for clinical and research purposes to automatically quantify the degree of amyloid deposition in the brain using positron emission tomography (PET) images. Given that very few studies have investigated the use of Heuron, a PET image quantification software approved for clinical use, this study aimed to compare amyloid deposition values quantified from 18F-flutemetamol PET images using PMOD and Heuron. Amyloid PET data obtained from 408 patients were analysed using each quantitative program; moreover, the standardized uptake value ratios (SUVRs) of target areas were obtained by dividing the standardized uptake value (SUV) of the target region by the SUV of cerebellar grey matter as a reference. Compared with PMOD, Heuron yielded significantly higher SUVRs for all target areas (paired sample t-test, p < 0.001), except for the PC/PCC (p = 0.986). However, the Bland-Altman plot analysis indicated that the two quantitative methods may be used interchangeably. Moreover, receiver operating characteristic curve analysis revealed no significant between-method difference in the performance of the SUVRs in evaluating the visual positivity of amyloid deposits (p = 0.948). In conclusion, Heuron and PMOD have comparable performance in quantifying the degree of amyloid deposits in PET images.

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to elucidate the effect of cattle breed on carcass and meat chemical composition, fatty acid profiles, and lipid-metabolism-related genes. For this study, same-age Hanwoo and Chikso steers (n = 6 per breed) reared under identical conditions were used. Immediately after slaughter, muscle tissues were collected for analysis of mRNA expression. At 24 h post-mortem, the carcasses were assessed for carcass traits (marbling score, meat yield, etc.), and meat quality and fatty acid profiles in the longissimus lumborum (LL) and semimembranosus (SM) muscles. The results showed that no differences in the slaughter weight, dressing rate, back-fat thickness, trimmed fat, and total meat yield occurred between the two breeds (p > 0.05). However, Hanwoo cattle had a higher marbling score, intramuscular fat (IMF) content, and expression level of lipid-metabolism-related genes such as lipoprotein lipase, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma, and fatty acid binding protein 4, compared with Chikso (p < 0.05). Contrastingly, Chikso had a higher total unsaturated fatty acid content and expression level of stearoyl CoA desaturase 1 (p < 0.05). It may be said that the difference in the expression levels of lipid-metabolism-related genes could be the molecular factors underlying IMF deposition and fatty acid profile differences in the beef from the two breeds.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Adolescents are considered to be vulnerable to particulate matter (PM). This study aims to develop and verify the effectiveness of the "school-based education program for coping with particulate matter (SEPC_PM)." This program was designed by employing the health belief model. METHODS: High school students between the ages of 15 and 18 in South Korea participated in the program. This study employed a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. A total of 113 students participated in the study; of these, 56 students participated in the intervention group, and 57 in the control group. The intervention group received 8 intervention sessions the SEPC_PM over the course of 4 weeks. RESULTS: After the completion of the program, the intervention group's knowledge about PM showed a statistically significant increase (t = 4.79, p < .001). The practice of engaging in health-managing behaviors to protect against PM also showed statistically significant improvement in the intervention group, with the greatest progress in practicing precaution when outdoors (t = 2.22, p = .029). No statistically significant changes were observed regarding other dependent variables. However, a subdomain of the variable of perceived self-efficacy for engaging in health-managing behaviors to protect against PM (degree of body cleansing after returning home) demonstrated a statistically significant increase in the intervention group (t = 1.99, p = .049). CONCLUSIONS: The SEPC_PM may be proposed for incorporation into regular high school curricula to improve students' health by encouraging them to take necessary actions against PM.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to compare the meat quality and taste-and-aroma-related components of beef between breeds. For this purpose, Hanwoo and Chikso steers (n = 7 per breed) raised under identical conditions until 30 months old were used. After 24 h of slaughter, longissimus lumborum (LL) and semimembranosus (SM) muscles were collected and analyzed for technological quality, free amino acids, metabolites, and volatile compounds. The Chikso meat showed lower values for shear force and color traits (lightness, redness, and yellowness) compared to Hanwoo (p < 0.05). The Chikso presented a higher amount of sweetness-related free amino acids (alanine, proline, and threonine) in the LL muscle, while Hanwoo had a higher amount of methionine and glutamine associated with umami taste (p < 0.05). A total of 36 metabolites were identified and quantified in the meat samples; out of them, 7 compounds were affected by breed (p < 0.05). Regarding aroma compounds, a significantly higher amount of fat-derived aldehydes associated with fatty and sweet notes was found in Hanwoo, whereas a higher amount of pyrazines associated with roasty notes was found in Chikso (p < 0.05). Thus, under identical feeding conditions, breed showed a significant effect on the quality and taste-and-aroma-related components that may influence the eating quality of beef between the two breeds studied.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: For decades, LYD ([Landrace×Yorkshire] ♀×Duroc ♂) pigs are the most commonly-used commercial breed for meat production in Korea. Recently, due to the increasing demand for premium pork, the National Institute of Animal Science (Korea) has synthesized a novel pig breed named Woori Heukdon (WHD). This study aimed at comparing the carcass traits, meat yield and quality characteristics between the LYD and WHD pigs under identical rearing condition. METHODS: The WHD and LYD pigs (n = 15 each) were reared under identical conditions and fed the same commercial diet until reaching recommended market weight (100 to 120 kg). After slaughter, the carcasses were evaluated for traits and meat yield, and the meat quality was assessed on shoulder butt and belly cuts. RESULTS: Although no significant differences (p>0.05) occurred in slaughter weight between two pig types, WHD had a lower meat yield (by about 6 kg corresponding to approximately 7%) compared to the LYD pigs (p<0.05). The WHD had a higher fat content (by 4.26% and 13.52% in the shoulder butt and belly, respectively) compared to those of LYD pigs (p<0.05). The WHD meat showed a lower cooking loss and higher a* (redness) value (p<0.05). The WHD belly had a significantly (p<0.05) higher oleic acid content and concentrations of nonanal, octanal and decanal associated with fatty odor while, the LYD meat had a higher number of pyrazines associated with roasty odor. Regarding sensory quality, higher flavor, juiciness, and acceptability higher scores were given for the WHD meat than for the LYD meat (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Under identical rearing conditions the WHD exhibited a better meat quality and sensory properties. However, the use of this diet resulted in a high fat level that may be associated with high trimming loss for the WHD.

RESUMO

Apathy is a common non-motor symptom of Parkinson disease (PD) that can affect the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients and caregivers. This study aimed to investigate the clinical determinants of apathy and its impact on HRQoL in patients with early PD. We enrolled 324 patients with early PD with modified Hoehn-Yahr stages 1 to 3 and a disease duration ≤5 years. Demographic information was obtained, and motor and non-motor symptoms were evaluated with relevant scales. Apathy was present in 110 of 324 (33.9%) patients. Compared with patients with non-apathetic PD, those with apathetic PD had significantly higher modified Hoehn-Yahr stage, Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale-II (UPDRS-II) score, Non-Motor Symptoms Scale (NMSS) total score, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) score, and Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire-8 (PDQ-8) score. Clinical variables independently associated with the Apathy Evaluation Scale (AES) score were NMSS domain 3 score and BDI score. The univariate regression analysis revealed that the PDQ-8 score was significantly associated with age; disease duration; formal education duration; and UPDRS-III, UPDRS-II, NMSS total, Mini-Mental Status Examination, BDI, Beck Anxiety Inventory, and AES scores. Independent predictors of the PDQ-8 score in the multivariate regression analysis were UPDRS-III, UPDRS-II, NMSS total, NMSS domain 3, Beck Anxiety Inventory, and AES scores. In the present study, apathy was an independent predictor of HRQoL in patients with early PD. Therefore, identifying and managing apathy could help improve HRQoL in patients with early PD.

RESUMO

Periodontal disease is a chronic disease with a high prevalence, and in order to secure natural materials to prevent oral diseases, new materials that protect periodontal tissue from inflammation are being sought. Genes were identified using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), and proteins were confirmed using Western blot. Dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate (DCF-DA) analysis was used, and the antibacterial effects were confirmed through Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimal Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) analysis. To confirm this effect in vivo, Sprague-Dawley rats, in which periodontitis was induced using ligation or Lipopolysaccharide of Porphyromonas gingivalis (PG-LPS), were used. In vitro experiments using human periodontal ligament (HPDL) cells stimulated with PG-LPS showed that Ginsenoside Rg6 (G-Rg6) had anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, and osteoblast differentiation properties. In vivo, G-Rg6 was effective in Sprague-Dawley rats in which periodontitis was induced using ligation or PG-LPS. Therefore, Ginsenoside Rg6 shows potential effectiveness in alleviating periodontitis.

RESUMO

Importance: Polygenic risk scores (PRSs), which aggregate the genetic effects of single-nucleotide variants identified in genome-wide association studies (GWASs), can help distinguish individuals at a high genetic risk for Alzheimer disease (AD). However, genetic studies have predominantly focused on populations of European ancestry. Objective: To evaluate the transferability of a PRS for AD in the Korean population using summary statistics from a prior GWAS of European populations. Design, Setting, and Participants: This cohort study developed a PRS based on the summary statistics of a large-scale GWAS of a European population (the International Genomics of Alzheimer Project; 21 982 AD cases and 41 944 controls). This PRS was tested for an association with AD dementia and its related phenotypes in 1634 Korean individuals, who were recruited from 2013 to 2019. The association of a PRS based on a GWAS of a Japanese population (the National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology; 3962 AD cases and 4074 controls) and a transancestry meta-analysis of European and Japanese GWASs was also evaluated. Data were analyzed from December 2020 to June 2021. Main Outcomes and Measures: Risk of AD dementia, amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), earlier symptom onset, and amyloid ß deposition (Aß). Results: A total of 1634 Korean patients (969 women [59.3%]), including 716 individuals (43.6%) with AD dementia, 222 (13.6%) with aMCI, and 699 (42.8%) cognitively unimpaired controls, were analyzed in this study. The mean (SD) age of the participants was 71.6 (9.0) years. Higher PRS was associated with a higher risk of AD dementia independent of APOE ɛ4 status in the Korean population (OR, 1.95; 95% CI, 1.40-2.72; P < .001). Furthermore, PRS was associated with aMCI, earlier symptom onset, and Aß deposition independent of APOE ɛ4 status. The PRS based on a transancestry meta-analysis of data sets comprising 2 distinct ancestries showed a slightly improved accuracy. Conclusions and Relevance: In this cohort study, a PRS derived from a European GWAS identified individuals at a high risk for AD dementia in the Korean population. These findings emphasize the transancestry transferability and clinical value of PRSs and suggest the importance of enriching diversity in genetic studies of AD.

RESUMO

The objectives of this study were to elucidate the effect of different high-concentration levels of inert gases (Ar and N2) on heme-pigment solutions and on the color of the blood, meat, and small intestine of rabbits; and to figure out the proper concentration level of inert gas (Ar or N2) for the complete stunning of the rabbit. To observe the changing of color attributes, a research study was conducted in the abattoir of the National Institute of Animal Science (NIAS), RDA, Republic of Korea. This experiment had 2 parts, (i) A trial on heme-pigment solutions (hemoglobin and myoglobin solution) was conducted in a gas chamber with different high-concentration levels of carbon dioxide, argon, nitrogen, and normal air; and (ii) a rabbit experiment was conductedstunning with different high-concentration levels of carbon dioxide, argon, nitrogen, and the Halal method (non-stunning). A small-size digital gas chamber was used for this experiment (size: width 850 mm × depth 1350 mm). Artificial hemoglobin (Hb) and myoglobin (Mb) solutions were created from "porcine hemoglobin lyophilized powder" and "equine skeletal muscle myoglobin lyophilized powder", respectively. In the heme-pigment solutions trial, 10 treatments were used: (i) 80% carbon dioxide (T1), (ii) 85% carbon dioxide (T2), (iii) 90% carbon dioxide (T3), (iv) 80% argon (T4), (v) 85% argon (T5), (vi) 90% argon (T6), (vii) 80% nitogen (T7), (viii) 85% nitogen (T8), (ix) 90% nitogen (T9), and (x) normal air (T10). Heme-pigment solutions (both Hb and Mb) were exposed with each treatment for four separate durations of time (30 s, 1 min, 2 min, and 4 min); and every sample (Hb and Mb) was exposed during each duration of time for 10 times (n = 10). In the rabbit experiment, seven treatments were used (i) 85% carbon dioxide (T1), (ii) 90% carbon dioxide (T2), (iii) 85% argon (T3), (iv) 90% argon (T4), (v) 96% nitrogen (T5), (vi) 98% nitogen (T6), and (vii) the Halal method (non-stunning) (T7). Forty-two rabbits (mixed-breed) were collected from the nearest commercial farm and randomly selected for a treatment group (n = 6). The average body weight was 2.3 kg. For stunning, each individual rabbit was separately kept in a gas chamber, after which each specific gas was used to fulfill the desired level in the pit. After reaching the desired level of concentration, rabbits were stunned within a very short time. It was observed that the time required for stunning in the T1, T2, T3, T4, T5 and T6 treatment was 79−82, 68−73, 97−103, 88−91, 164−173, and 108−115 s, respectively. In the case of the Halal method (non-stunning), as per the rules of Islam, rabbits were slaughtered without stunning. After slaughtering, in all treatments, the blood, meat, and small intestine of each animal were collected carefully and kept in a cool room in which the temperature was −2 °C, and after 24 h, the color attributeslightness (L*), redness (a*), and yellowness (b*)were measured via a Chroma Meter. It was found that in both experiments (trial on heme-pigment solutions and rabbit stunning), the color values (L*, a* and b*) showed a significant difference (p < 0.05) among the treatment groups. The CO2-treated groups showed high redness (a*) and low lightness (L*) and yellowness (b*), which indicated a dark-red color, and N2-treated groups showed high lightness (L*) and yellowness (b*) and low redness (a*), which implied a bright-red color. The effect of the Ar was in between the CO2- and N2-treated groups. These phenomena were observed both in the heme-pigment solutions (Hb and Mb) and in the blood, meat, and small intestine of the rabbits. N2-stunned animals fulfill the fundamental desire of consumers to purchase bright red-colored fresh meat. Therefore, in view of color attributes, consumer satisfaction, and animal welfare, N2 gas can be thought of as a valuable alternative to stunning. Considering the time required for complete stunning and desirable color attributes, a 98% concentration of N2 is best for rabbit stunning. As such, it could be used as a better option for the gas stunning of animals.

RESUMO

Online Grocery Shopping (OGS) has grown dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is unknown, however, how consumers weighed pandemic situational factors versus household production considerations of timesaving and cost. We collect and analyze survey data from a nationally representative sample to examine how consumers with different health and socio-demographic profiles consider these factors for OGS choices and how their choices changed in the first seven months of the pandemic. We find that consumers with moderate-to-high income, white, having insurance, and not in the labor force value the timesaving and convenience of OGS more than pandemic situational factors. Still, some consumers with health risks choose to shop in person because of the cost of OGS. Lung disease, diabetes, mental health conditions, age, income, and college degree explain the dynamics of OGS choice as the pandemic evolved. Our findings shed light on the development of technology-assisted adaptation to future public health emergencies.

RESUMO

Quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG) has proven useful in predicting the response to various treatments, but, until now, no study has investigated changes in functional connectivity using QEEG following a lifestyle intervention program. We aimed to investigate neurophysiological changes in QEEG after a 24-week multidomain lifestyle intervention program in the SoUth Korean study to PrEvent cognitive impaiRment and protect BRAIN health through lifestyle intervention in at-risk elderly people (SUPERBRAIN). Participants without dementia and with at least one modifiable dementia risk factor, aged 60-79 years, were randomly assigned to the facility-based multidomain intervention (FMI) (n = 51), the home-based multidomain intervention (HMI) (n = 51), and the control group (n = 50). The analysis of this study included data from 44, 49, and 34 participants who underwent EEG at baseline and at the end of the study in the FMI, HMI, and control groups, respectively. The spectrum power and power ratio of EEG were calculated. Source cortical current density and functional connectivity were estimated by standardized low-resolution brain electromagnetic tomography. Participants who received the intervention showed increases in the power of the beta1 and beta3 bands and in the imaginary part of coherence of the alpha1 band compared to the control group. Decreases in the characteristic path lengths of the alpha1 band in the right supramarginal gyrus and right rostral middle frontal cortex were observed in those who received the intervention. This study showed positive biological changes, including increased functional connectivity and higher global efficiency in QEEG after a multidomain lifestyle intervention. RESUMO

The objective of present study was to investigate the feasibility of utilizing only high concentration of nitrogen gas in the stunning of pigs and its effects on the quality traits of the meat and small intestine. To conduct this experiment, three treatment groups were compared: (i) electric stunning (T1), (ii) CO2 (80%) gas stunning (T2), and (iii) N2 (98%) gas stunning (T3). A total of 21 standard pigs (Landrace × Yorkshire × Duroc; LYD) were collected from a commercial pig farm, randomly selecting seven pigs for each group (body weight of 104.5 to 120.6 kg). For stunning, each individual pig was separately kept in a gas chamber, after which each specific gas was used to fulfill the desired level in the pit. To obtain the desired level of concentration for each gas (N2 at 98% and CO2 at 80%), approximately 80 min and 35 min were required, respectively. It was observed that after reaching the desired level of concentration, pigs were stunned within a very short time (for CO2, 90 s and for N2, 120 s). For electric stunning, standard quality electric devices were used. After slaughtering, the meat and small intestine of each animal was collected separately and kept in a cool room where temperature was −2 °C. In the meat and small intestine, L* (Lightness) and b* (Yellowness) were high (p < 0.05) in the T1 and T3 groups. The T2 group showed high a* (Redness) (p < 0.05) values in both the meat and small intestine. A proximate composition of meat showed no significant differences except moisture. The water holding capacity (WHC), cooking loss (CL), and Warner-Bratzler shear force (WBSF) of meat were lowest in the T2 group, but not at a notable difference compared to T3. In the small intestine, L* (Lightness), a* (Redness), b* (Yellowness), and thickness significantly differed (p < 0.05) in each group, but WBSF showed no significance between the T2 and T3 groups. It is concluded that a high concentration of N2 gas (98%) may be considered in the stunning of pigs, and its effect on meat and small intestine is favorable.

RESUMO

Background: This study using multi-center health examination data from Korean adults was conducted to confirm changes in weight, and their related cardiometabolic parameters, before and after strengthening of social distancing regulations. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using health check-up data from 13 university hospitals. The study period was from January 2018 to July 2020. To examine the effect of systematic social distancing measures, participants who underwent a health check-up (Visit 3) between July 2020 and July 2021 (during full scale social distancing), and had undergone two previous health check-ups (Visits 1 and 2) between January 2018 and June 2020 (before social distancing), were selected. In total, data from 7,875 participants were analyzed. Linear mixed-effect models were used to calculate estimates of anthropometric indices and metabolic markers measured on Visits 2 and 3, compared with measurements from Visit 1. Results: There were no significant differences in body weight, body mass index, waist circumference, and body composition on Visit 3 than on Visits 1 and 2. However, the odds of metabolic syndrome and its components, including hypertension, high glucose, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, hyper-non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterolemia, and dyslipidemia were significantly higher on Visit 3 than on Visits 1 and 2. The increase in metabolic complications was marked, particularly in relatively young adults who visited health check-up centers located in the capital area. Conclusion: Metabolic syndrome and its components were significantly worse after high level social distancing, although there were no significant increases in anthropometric indices and body fat levels. Healthcare providers need to prevent and manage worsening of metabolic parameters in subpopulations prone to be more sedentary and eat unhealthy food during the COVID-19 pandemic and associated social distancing measures.
